This month, The Durham will host special events and films to celebrate the local jazz scene and give visitors a better understanding of the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz. Jazz JAM at The Durham Weekend The weekend of April 24-25 will be jam-packed with special performances. Saturday’s performances will explore “Jazz through the Eras” with dancing by the Omaha Jitterbugs. Sunday’s programming celebrates the “Legends of Omaha Jazz.” Saturday, April 24 • Street Railway Company Jazz Band - 11 AM • Sing, Sing, Swing Orchestra - 1 PM • Steve Thornburg Quartet - 3 PM • Matt Wallace - 5 PM Sunday, April 25 • The Gulizia Brothers Band featuring Joe Genovesi - 2 PM Jazz Appreciation Month is sponsored by Mutual of Omaha and Fraser Stryker PC LLO. With additional support provided by the Omaha Musicians’ Association and the Music Performance Trust Fund. Car enthusiasts will enjoy a fabulous display of nearly 50 classic cars from the 50’s and 60’s. Several will also have matching pedal cars. Both adults and children will be able to vote on their top three favorite cars to determine the winners of Best of Show. Visitors will enjoy classic rockn-roll music played by Complete Music and children can take part in hula hoop contests, face painting, and pedal car trials. Visitors can also register to win tickets to the Happy Together Tour which will be held on Tuesday, May 25 at the Orpheum Theater. Performers include The Turtles featuring Flo and Eddie, Micky Dolenz (The Monkees Lead Singer), The Grass Roots featuring Rob Grill, Mark Lindsay (former lead singer of Paul Revere and The Raiders), and The Buckinghams. The Durham Museum in partnership with the Omaha Convention and Visitors Bureau, Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo, Lauritzen Gardens, Omaha Children’s Museum, Joslyn Art Museum, Village Pointe, and the Amazing Pizza Machine will unveil an Omaha Adventure coupon book that will entice families to explore their city. On May 22, family activities are planned from noon to 8 PM, with a 6:30 PM concert at Village Pointe! If you can’t make the concert, coupon books will be available while supplies last at participating venues. May 1 and 2 is the last chance for visitors to see the Are We There Yet? exhibition sponsored by the Douglas County Commissioners, the Dixon Family Foundation, AAA, the Cornhusker Motor Club Foundation and Cox Communications. Come explore the extraordinary forces of weather in Nature Unleashed: Inside Natural Disasters from Chicago's Field Museum. These camps, designed for children 5-12, will highlight causes, effects and historical significance of the most powerful storms on our planet. The Durham will also bring back other favorites such as Wizard University, CSI: Durham, Wild, Wild West, Exploring Omaha, and many theater and art camps.
