Welcome to the 2014-15 Broadway Center
Season! Whether this is your first visit to Tacoma’s
historic Theater District or you are an old friend, we
thank you for your patronage, and are thrilled to be
sharing the experience of live performance with you.
2014 marks the next phase of our capital campaign
to renovate and update the theaters – and amid the
changes and renovations to these grand longstanding
landmarks, we have found a renewed sense of passion,
pride, and dedication to presenting Tacoma with
truly world-class performers. This year’s programming
reflects this vision, and we sincerely hope that you
will find several shows to challenge and inspire your
sense of wonder and creativity.
This season kicks off with toe-tapping concerts
– first with “Kindie” rockers Caspar Babypants and
Recess Monkey, two groups making kids’ rock music
cool for everyone from Pre-K through adulthood.
Featuring former lead singer of The Presidents of
the United States of America Chris Ballew, this is
a kids’ concert parents will happily attend. This is
followed by Heritage Blues Orchestra, a dynamic
combination of low-down country and urban blues
with an injection of the bold brass of classic New
Orleans. For a more subtle experience, Spectrum
Dance: LOVE is a Seattle-based troupe that will be
performing Tony-nominated choreographer Donald
Byrd’s exploration of the powerful, vulnerable, and
passionate dimensions of human emotion.
Later in October, Sister Helen Prejean brings the
thought-provoking issue of the death penalty to the
stage with Dead Man Walking in Washington State.
Then The Capitol Steps will present the lighter side
of politics with their satirical skits and improv.
Country rock group Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
will perform their Grammy Hall of Fame brand of
music, while ¡Fiesta Familia Folklore! brings together
Mariachi Huenachi and other Pacific northwest
artists for a celebration of the music and dance of
Mexico.
The holiday season will officially kick off with the
69th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting right outside the
Pantages Theater. This free event has become a South
Sound tradition, as has the arrival of the Seattle Men’s
Chorus – this year performing “…Our Gay Apparel.”
Together, we will experience art, community and
life in vibrant downtown Tacoma. Thank you for
joining the journey, and filling our historic theaters
with inspiration and joy.
Warmest regards,
David Fischer

Caspar Babypants & Recess Monkey
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2014 AT 10:30 A.M. • RIALTO THEATER
Approximate Run Time: 90 minutes
Recess Monkey
WHAT? Caspar Babypants makes high
quality, thoughtful, simple, acoustic sing
along songs for parents and kids of all ages
to enjoy together. In addition he writes
children’s books with his wife Kate Endle.
Kate illustrates the books and creates the
cover art for the Caspar Babypants albums.
Drew Holloway, Guitar & Lead
Vocals: When he’s not rocking out
with Recess Monkey, you can find Drew
teaching pre-K and Kindergarten at
University Child Development School in
Seattle, singing goofy songs at the kitchen
table with his wife and two girls, aged
thirty-nine, nine and five or out running
somewhere in Seattle. If you see him out
running he could really use a doughnut.
WHO? Caspar Babypants is better known
as Chris Ballew. Chris is the twice Grammy
nominated songwriter and lead singer for the
four times platinum rock and roll band The
Presidents of the United States of America.
WHEN? Caspar began writing songs for
kids in the summer of 2008 and put out his
debut record “HERE I AM!” on 2/12/09.
Then “MORE PLEASE!” came out on
11/17/09, “THIS IS FUN!” came out
on 11/2/10, “SING ALONG!” came out
on 8/16/11, “HOT DOG!” came out on
4/17/12, “I FOUND YOU!” came out on
1/15/13 and the NEW album is a Beatles
cover album called “BABY BEATLES!”
which came out on 9/17/13. The new
album “RISE AND SHINE!” will be out
on 9/16/14. There are three books cowritten by Caspar’s wife Kate Endle. “My
Woodland Wish” and “Bunny Rabbit In
The Sunlight” were published on 9/14/11
and a third book called “Augie to Zebra”
came out on 5/22/12.
WHY? Caspar says: “Having young children
is a joyous and unforgettable experience.
However, the home of new parents can also
be a stressful sleepless nervous environment.
So I make music that’s a positive helping
component in the home and car. I want
to help new parents sing to and with their
child and provide real organic musical
relief. I specifically want to make music
for the very young because I admire their
associative inventive imaginations and as an
adult I nurture that same creativity in myself.
I am also involved with many non profits
that focus on parent education and outreach
to abused, homeless and neglected kids.”
Jack Forman, Bass & Jokes: Jack
studied Creative Writing and Top Ramen
consumption at University of Washington.
The day after finishing his novel (which
was mostly about writing a novel), he
bought his first bass and promptly joined
his first band with the belief that the best
way to become a better musician would
be to play music with people far more
talented than he was.
After several years of contributing
radio content for the channel, Jack’s
also now an On-Air personality on
SiriusXM’s Kids Place Live where his
show Live From the Monkey House
blends kid-centric ideas, hysterical daily
themes and high energy music for the
whole family. Jack lives in Seattle with his
wife, son, daughter, cat and chickens.

Korum Bischoff: Drums &
Vocals: Korum spent his first ten
years playing in his dad’s studio in a
Sacramento cul-de-sac before moving
onto a sailboat and sailing off with the
musical Bischoff crew to Bainbridge
Island.
When he’s not fish-sticking, you’ll
find Korum directing communications
and events at Bloedel Reserve, a public
garden overlooking Puget Sound,
teaching private drum lessons (he
formerly taught middle school music) or
playing with his boys.
WHERE? Caspar Babypants lives in Seattle
Washington USA by the beach and the woods
and the big wide Pacific Northwest sky.

8 BROADWAY CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
Listen to their debut album, And Still
I Rise, or witness a live performance by
the Heritage Blues Orchestra (HBO) and
you’ll recognize this group as something
breathtakingly new even as they honor old
African-American musical traditions.
The grit of low-down country and
urban blues to the bold brass of New
Orleans; the hand-clapping, hustle and
bustle of gospel to fiery postmodern, jazzinfused horn arrangements; the haunting
cries of work songs to pulsating drums that
reach back to the roots of it all—if you are
lucky enough to hear the Heritage Blues
Orchestra, you’ll experience this and more.
From the first of the twelve tracks
on their debut album And Still I Rise,
Junior Mack’s propulsive rendition of
Son House’s Clarksdale Moan, Heritage
Blues Orchestra unapologetically stomps
onto the scene and digs in with both
heels—taking us from Bill Sims’ hard-
shuffling version of the immortal Muddy
Waters classic, Catfish Blues, to the solemn
dirge of Chaney Sims’ interpretation
of Leadbelly’s Go Down Hannah to
magnificent three-part harmonies against a
slippery slide guitar in their head-nodding
version of Get Right Church.
The group is driven by the powerful
rhythms of Grammy-awarding winning
blues drummer Kenny “Beedy Eyes” Smith;
buttressed by the churning, precise and
percussive rhythms of harmonica virtuoso,
Frenchman Vincent Bucher; and ablaze with
some of New York City’s heaviest horn
players who have worked with everyone
from Wynton Marsalis to Sting and
Springsteen.
Heritage Blues Orchestra also boasts
contributions from Bruno Wilhelm, the
group’s highly esteemed tenor saxophonist
and horn arranger. A native of France,
Wilhelm is influenced by an extensive palette

of jazz styles. Whether with ethereal musings
or hard-hitting section work, his arrangements
punctuate every song they touch.
This combined with Bill, Chaney and
Junior’s collective history in jazz, R&B and
gospel help articulate and underscore the
Heritage Blues Orchestra’s striking voice. At
the heart of the group is a broad spectrum
of the blues and the longstanding musical
mingling between America and Europe that
brings together African-American music,
Modern Jazz and Western European harmony.
Nowhere is the breadth of Heritage
Blues Orchestra’s vision and reach better
evidenced than on the album’s closing piece,
Hard Times. This song, in 3 movements,
demonstrates it all: the traditional call-andresponse between a lone voice and guitar;
a bewitching horn composition peppered
with Miles Davis’ A Silent Way; and a final
transition to a roof-raising funk jam that leaps
out and shoves you onto the dance floor.
This group is an inspiring testament to the
enduring power, possibilities and boundless
beauty of African-American music. It drives
us down Highway 49 from Clarksdale to
New Orleans, journeys across the Middle
Passage, takes us from chain gangs and juke
joints, to orchestra pits and church pews, and
even to back porches.
Their loving celebration of tradition gives
rise to a new adventure in music with a
singular sound. Please welcome the exciting
arrival of the Heritage Blues Orchestra.

LOVE
The world premiere of LOVE
concludes SDT’s 2011-2012 season, Tonynominated choreographer Donald Byrd’s
exploration of the most complicated of
human emotions. The season, entitled
“love: subject/object,” has been a
retrospective of several narrative works
that show “love” as a torturous, obsessive
exercise in despair, frailty, and annihilation.
LOVE — to be interpreted as resolution,
solution, or rejection — will be a clear
contrast from the rest of the season, not
only for its complete lack of narrative, but
also for its all ages accessibility.
LOVE returns Byrd to the grandness
and aesthetic beauty of pure dance, with
leaps, lifts, extensions, and full ensemble
numbers. Inside of a stripped Daniels
Recital Hall, a landscape made up of
two large island platforms, spectators can
observe the “love dances” with clinical
distance from above or surgical closeness
at ground level; or choose to move around
and between the islands to create ever
evolving viewing options for LOVE.
For this showstopping season closer,
Spectrum brings in two world class
cellists to perform Benjamin Britten‘s
Cello Suites, Denise Djokic and Wendy
Sutter. The Suites are a series of three
compositions, first composed for virtuoso
cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, that are
notoriously difficult. The piece requires
10 BROADWAY CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
stamina and technical prowess. Because of
this, the work is rarely performed live.
Spectrum Dance
Spectrum Dance Theater (SDT)
was founded in 1982 to bring dance of
the highest merit to a diverse audience
composed of people from different
social, cultural, ethnic and economic
backgrounds. SDT’s principal objective
is to make the art form of dance
accessible through contemporary dance
performances and high-quality dance
training in a variety of dance styles. Three
organizational components comprise
SDT: the professional Company, the
School, and Community and Outreach
programs. Under Donald Byrd’s
visionary artistic leadership since 2002,
the organization has embarked on an
exhilarating transformation that has
attracted world-class dancers, produced
some of the most avant-garde works in
contemporary dance, and generated local
and national praise.
Donald Byrd
Donald Byrd became Artistic Director
of Seattle’s Spectrum Dance Theater in
December 2002. From 1978 – 2002,
he was Artistic Director of Donald
Byrd/The Group, a critically acclaimed
contemporary dance company, founded
in Los Angeles and later based in New
York, that toured extensively, both
nationally and internationally. He has
created over 80 modern dance works for
his own groups as well as the Alvin Ailey
Company, the Dayton Contemporary
Dance Company, and Philadelphia Dance
Company (Philadanco), among others. He
has choreographed for classical companies,
including Pacific Northwest Ballet, The
Joffrey Ballet, Aterballetto, MaggioDanza
diFirenze, and Oregon Ballet Theater.
He has worked with some of the most
prestigious theater and opera companies in
the U.S., including New York Shakespeare
Festival/Public Theater, La Jolla Playhouse,
the Intiman Theater, San Francisco Opera,
Seattle Opera and New York City Opera.
In 2010, among other productions
in the resident season, the company
appeared in New York in a new Donald
Byrd interpretation of a John Zorn
composition; part of the Guggenheim
Museum’s Works & Progress series.
Mr. Byrd has served on the faculty of
the California Institute for the Arts and
taught at Wesleyan University, the School
of Visual Arts, Harvard Summer Dance
Center, California State University Long
Beach, and the Universityof California
at Santa Cruz, and currently serves on
the Board of Trustees for Dance Theater
Workshop in New York. He was a fellow
at The Institute on the Arts and Civic
Dialogue at Harvard for three years. Byrd
also served for three terms on the Seattle
Arts Commission. In 2006, he received a
TONY nomination for his choreography
for The Color Purple.
Donald has most recently been awarded
a Mayor’s Arts Award for his sustained
contributions to the City of Seattle; and
has been selected among the first group
of Fellows to the American Academy in
Jerusalem.

Sister Helen
Prejean has been
instrumental in
sparking national
dialogue on the death
penalty and helping
to shape the Catholic
Church’s newly
vigorous opposition
to state executions.
She considers herself
a southern storyteller and she travels around
the world giving talks about her ministry.
Sister Helen is a member of the
Congregation of St. Joseph. She spent her
first years with the Sisters teaching religion
to junior high school students. Realizing that
being on the side of poor people is an essential
part of the Gospel, she moved into the St.
Thomas Housing Project in New Orleans and
worked at Hope House from 1984 until 1986.
During this time, she was asked to correspond
with Patrick Sonnier, a death row inmate at
Angola, Louisiana’s state prison. She agreed and
became his spiritual adviser. After witnessing
his execution, she wrote a book about the
experience. The result was Dead Man Walking:
An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in
the United States. The book became a movie, an
opera and a play for high schools and colleges.
Since 1984, Sister Helen has divided her
time between educating citizens about the
death penalty and counseling individual death
row prisoners. She has accompanied six men
to their deaths. In doing so, she began to
suspect that some of those executed were not
guilty. This realization inspired her second
book, The Death of Innocents: An Eyewitness
Account of Wrongful Executions, which was
released by Random House in 2004.
Sister Helen is presently at work on another
book – River of Fire: My Spiritual Journey.

The Capitol Steps begin in 1981, at a
Christmas party in the office of former
Senator Charles Percy. Like most things
in Congress, they never knew when to
stop. Over the past thirty years, the Capitol
Steps have recorded thirty-four albums, and
appeared on “Good Morning America,” the
“Today Show,” “20/20,” “Entertainment
Tonight,” “Nightline,” CNN’s “Inside
Politics,” and dozens of times on National
Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.”
For the past twenty years, they’ve produced
quarterly specials for public radio and have
been featured in three national specials for
public television. They’ve performed for five
U.S. Presidents (six if you include Hillary.)
Many of the performers have worked on
Capitol Hill, some for Republicans, some
for Democrats, and some for members who
sit firmly on the fence. In fact, the current
cast of the Capitol Steps has at one time or
another infested the offices of eleven US
Senators and seven Members of the House
of Representatives. Most of these politicians
have since been defeated or placed under
investigation.
“The troupe has become a favorite on the

THE ORGANIZATION
Flying House Productions is home to
two of the largest community choruses in
America: Seattle Men’s Chorus, founded
in 1979, which is also the largest gay men’s
chorus in the world with over 350 singing
members; and Seattle Women’s Chorus,
which made its premiere on stage in 2002
and has quickly grown to over 300 singers.
Each Chorus currently has a small ensemble
of 9 to 11 members each (Captain
Smartypants and Sensible Shoes), which
further the mission of the organization
by performing throughout the Pacific
Northwest.
In addition to the 650 singing members,
Flying House Productions has a base of over
50 volunteers and associate members who
support both Choruses. A leading voice for the
lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT)
community, FHP offers 30 outreach events and
19 mainstage concert performances annually.
Concerts, often including nationally-known
guest artists along with our region’s professional
talents, receive critical acclaim for their
combination of high musical quality, wit, and
celebration of people of all sexual orientations
and identities. Over 30,000 people attend
Flying House Production performances each
year at Benaroya Hall, McCaw Hall, Cornish
Playhouse at the Seattle Center, and Saint
Mark’s Cathedral, with thousands more seeing
each Chorus in other local performances
throughout Washington every year.
Flying House Productions cannot be
considered as simply a local arts organization.
In addition to the high level of performances
it produces, Flying House Productions is also
a “voice for acceptance” in the community
and across the nation.

PAT RON I N F OR M AT ION
For safety and consideration of all our patrons and performers, please observe the following guidelines
when attending a performance at the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts:
THEATER ETIQUETTE
FIRE EXITS
• Performances start promptly at their scheduled time. Please allow plenty of
time to park and find your seat.
Pantages Theater – Exits are located east and west of the auditorium on both
orchestra and balcony levels.
• Late seating is not guaranteed and is at the discretion of the House Manager.
Rialto Theater – Exits are located on both orchestra and balcony levels.
• If you must leave your seat during the performance, you will not be reseated until an appropriate break in the performance.
Theatre on the Square – Exits are located at the front entrance for the lower/
main level and on the north side of the building on the upper level.
To receive emergency messages, you may leave your name and seat
number with the House Manager. PLEASE remember to silence all
cell phone, tablet and electronic devices before entering the theater.
Please have hearing aides tuned to no higher than 75% of the maximum
volume.
ACCESSIBLE SEATING
All theaters are ADA compliant. Please request accessible seating at the time
of purchase. Assisted Listening Devices are available at all theaters.
ASSISTED LISTENING
Headsets are available for our patrons at no cost. A headset will allow you
to tune out little noises so you may listen to the performance without
distraction. Please notify a volunteer usher and one will be provided for you.
ATTIRE
A Broadway Center event is always an opportunity to dress up, but there is
never a dress code. Attire usually varies from nice casual clothing to formal
wear. Many people are allergic to perfumes. Out of consideration for your
fellow audience members, please use perfume or cologne in moderation
before entering the theater.
BACKSTAGE
No one is allowed backstage prior to, during, or after any performance
without proper authorization and identification.
CAMERAS OR RECORDING DEVICES
Taking photographs or making a recording of any kind during a
performance is not allowed and copyright restriction should be considered.
However, we do encourage you to take photos in the lobby or before the
show to share on Facebook or Twitter.
CHILDREN
Should your child become restless during a performance, you may be
asked to wait in the lobby. Children under 5 may not be admitted to some
performances; however our family shows are structured for a younger
audience and are enjoyable for the entire family.
A ticket is required for everyone regardless of age. When available, discounts
are available for younger audience members. Please contact the Box Office at
253.591.5894 with any concerns.
NO SMOKING
Smoking is allowed outdoors only at least 25-feet from the theater entrances
and where receptacles are provided.
PARKING
There are various parking options in Tacoma’s Theater District:
Blue pre-paid parking passes are valid at Park Plaza North, Rialto and
Subway Parking Lots only. Blue parking passes are valid from the time you
enter the garage until one hour after the show is over. If you choose to park
longer than this allowance, the parking attendant will add a ticket to your
windshield that will restart your post-show parking meter for additional time
used (to redeem, place the parking validation in the machine with payment).
Please note: the Rialto garage is always locked at midnight, please move your
car if you plan to enjoy additional downtown entertainment after the show.
For all Pantages and Theatre on the Square events, attended parking
is available at Park Plaza North Garage (located between 9th and 11th on
Commerce), which connects to the theaters through the sky bridge on the
fifth level. There is a $5 parking fee. The attendant is on duty for 30 minutes
prior and for one hour after the show’s conclusion. For more information,
contact Park Plaza North Garage directly at 253.572.4908.
Limited parking is also available directly across from the Pantages
and Theatre on the Square at the Subway Lot, 916 Broadway. There is an
$8 parking fee and no attendant on duty at this lot. Simply place your cash
in the machine or your blue pre-paid parking ticket in the box and write the
stall number on the ticket.
Street parking is usually available throughout the Theater District.

p.m., Monday through Friday. Saturday is $2 for all day parking. There is a
