20 Years of Caring
In response to a recognized community need for a safe place for
pregnant teens to live during their pregnancy, the vision of a maternity
home became a joint project of Women’s Care Center, Bethel College,
Saint Joseph Hospital in Mishawaka, and the Diocese of Fort WayneSouth Bend. A Board of Directors was formed from the sponsoring
agencies, a home near the hospital was secured, and staff was hired. In
1993, Mother’s Care Center opened its doors to serve unwed teens
facing crisis pregnancies.
Approximately eighteen months later, the home was closed due to a lack
of financial support. The sponsors gathered and made plans to continue
the outreach program. The home was re-christened Hannah’s House to
symbolize the Biblical character, Hannah, who greatly desired to be a
mother. During those early years, the fledgling program continued to
struggle financially and experienced administrative turnover. Catholic
Charities agreed to be the fiscal manager and provided financial support
to keep the home in operation. It stabilized significantly, community
support for our mission grew, and by September 2000, Hannah’s House
became an independent entity.
Hannah’s House has grown from a shelter for pregnant teens to an
outreach ministry that provides shelter, support, and a range of
programming to women of all ages and their children. Our mission
statement reflects the sanctity of life and support for pregnant women as
they care for their own and their unborn baby’s physical health, work on
emotional wellness, nurture their spiritual life, and pursue
self-sufficiency goals. The resulting positive reputation has resulted in
increased referrals from community agencies, opportunities for media
coverage, and strong support from a variety of individuals, groups, and
churches within the community.
Approximately 25-30 women and their babies live in the home over the
course of each year. Our recently dedicated second home is currently
being used as transitional housing for mothers following their stay at
Hannah’s House. We now provide regular opportunities for Hannah’s
House alumnae, their children and the fathers in their lives to remain
supported and involved. A major addition to programming occurred in
2012, when Bridge of Hope of St. Joseph County merged with Hannah’s
House. This nationally based, 18-24 month program seeks to end
homelessness for single women and their children by providing rental
assistance, case management and the supportive friendship of a mentors
from local churches.

Fourth Annual Women of Hope Luncheon
Over three hundred people gathered at Morris
Park Country Club on March 21, 2013, for the
Fourth Annual Women of Hope Luncheon and
Silent Auction honoring the memory of Diane
Killilea, a founding board member of Hannah’s
House. The Luncheon which supports the
Bridge of Hope program, a church-based
approach to ending homelessness for single
mothers, featured guest speaker Paqui Kelly,
co-founder of Kelly Cares Foundation.
We are very grateful for these gifts as
they allow us to make a difference in the lives of
our women and their children.

As part of our 20th Anniversary
celebration, a reunion was held
on May 10, 2013 for the many
women and their children that
have called Hannah’s House their
home over the past twenty years.
Since opening in 1993, Hannah’s
House has served more than 500
women and babies! Over 70 people attended the reunion
which included 25 former residents, 6 current
residents, 4 fathers and 33 children.
After the luncheon, the attendees
paraded over to the new house where
the families were blessed by most

The Killilea Home
Hannah’s House dedicated a second home, the Killilea Home,
on Friday, May 10, 2013. The Killilea Home, located at 505
West Fourth Street, is named after Diane and Bill Killilea,
founding supporters of Hannah’s House. Over two hundred
people attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony along with
Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood and Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades,
Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, who blessed the home.
The renovation of the Killilea Home was made possible, in
part, with support from the Community Foundation of St.

Andrea Popielski joined the Hannah’s House family
on June 3, 2013 as Executive Director. The South
Bend native and married mother of two college-aged
sons holds a master’s degree in Counseling and
Human Services from IU South Bend.

Andrea’s career has been dedicated to the fields of behavioral
health and education. Following initial work in early childhood
education, she was a senior administrator at Madison Center.
She has also worked as a high-school guidance counselor,
coordinated Early College programs for Ivy Tech, and in
vocational education. Community involvement includes serving
on IU South Bend’s Counseling & Human Services Advisory
board and the SBCSC Community Control panel. She is also
involved in the Children’s Liturgy of the Word ministry in her
parish. According to Andrea, the opportunity to help pregnant
women deliver healthy babies, discover their self-worth and
realize their potential while living at Hannah’s House is a
perfect fit for her skills and passions.

We were also blessed with the opportunity to hear Dr. Uthman
Cavallo, a local obstetrician, speak about his Strong Fathers
program which incorporates four pillars: Present, Powerful,
Progressive and Provider.
25th Anniversary of Holiday Happenings
Originally an event of St. Joseph Community Hospital, Holiday
Happenings now benefits Hannah’s House and its programs. On
December 7, 2013, three hundred and thirty friends attended the
25th Anniversary event at Windsor Park Conference Center.
The silent and oral auctions led by Emcees Chuck Freeby and
Bob Nagle of WHME TV were fun and profitable.
A highlight of the evening was recognition of Honorary chair
Rev. Paul Doyle, C.S.C., long time board member and spiritual
leader of the organization. Also acknowledged were all former
and present officers and board members. Guests generously
responded to the emotional testimony given by former resident,
Jasmine and her grandmother, Sadee. The evening concluded
with proceeds of $134,000 raised to support our mission.

Support continues after residents move out
Family Support Group and Dad’s 101
The Family Support Group is our way of staying in touch with
our moms as well as connecting the community to our mission.
Family Support Group is a monthly gathering of former and
current residents. The meeting begins with a prayer and
complete meal donated by a generous organization, church, or a
group of friends. After dinner, a special programming event is
planned for the women. This may be a speaker, craft or special
pampering just for her! In 2013, 553 current residents, former
residents, fathers and children attended our Family Support
Group and Dad’s 101 meetings.

Learn and Earn Program
The Learn and Earn program is another way we stay in touch
with past residents. By reading parenting articles, continuing
their education, volunteering and working the women earn
points to purchase diapers, children’s items, paper products
such as toilet paper, cleaning products and household items
with items priced as low as 5 points.


The Bridge of Hope program
Bridge of Hope (BOH) is a nationally based program which
calls churches into action to end and prevent homelessness for
women and children.
Bridge of Hope at Hannah’s House in 2013:
 Served nine (9) women and thirteen (13) children

Increased the number of participants in service at one time
100% from four (4) to eight (8)

78% of participants enrolled in school or vocational
programs over the course of 2013

Of the eight (8) participants in good standing, all were
employed for all or the majority of the time.

Bridge of Hope celebrated the graduation of one (1)
participant in 2013, meaning that with the support of BOH
she achieved financial stability for herself and her children

Nine (9) churches with sixty-six (66) mentors were active
in 2013 and one additional church with ten (10) mentors
were in the training process

A quarterly outing, “Moms Night Out” was established to
provide continued support for alumni participants

Attendance at Hope Gatherings was 355 which includes
participants, children and mentors

Mentor Support continues
after Bridge of Hope
Guinn graduated from the Bridge of Hope program in April
2013. She was proud to be working a full time job in a field she
had chosen for her career. Guinn was living in an affordable
rental home, had just purchased a better running vehicle, and had
achieved stability for her family… the goal of the Bridge of
Hope program.
Then in November 2013, Guinn had to leave her full time
position of 15 months. During the months that followed, Guinn’s
mentors surrounded her and her family, helping them to stay
afloat until she was offered another full time position in January
2014.
“I have come to accept that its okay to have friends and support
after many years of feeling I had no one to turn to for a
shoulder to cry on. It feels great to be able to talk or visit with
my friends regardless of (whether) its good or bad. They truly
make a difference in my life and the lives of my children. They
lift me up with encouragement to strive for my goals and move
forward when I feel stuck. I no longer feel alone in this great
big world.”
