Picasso Peintre-Graveur, Tome II (1932-1934). Berne, 1968. No. 485. P. 272 ill. Beginning on January 19, 1933 and completed by the end of the same month, Picasso created an extraordinary number of 47 monotypes on the same theme. Each motif, which the artist printed three times at the most, is both creatively distinct yet aesthetically related to the others. Picasso rarely used the monotype technique, which produces a certain softness, enhancing the sensuality of the image. It also provides the artist with greater freedom: painting the image in oil or greasy ink directly onto the polished plate, rather than inscribing it into the metal makes it much easier to correct the image in progress, or wipe the plate clean and start over. It was Picasso himself who pulled the monotypes. The flute and the simple lines evoke both the archaic past of ancient Greek mythology and the idylls of pastoral poetry. Both figures bear Marie-Thérèse’s face. Picasso, who was married to Olga Chochlova at the time, had been having an affair with her since 1927. Pablo Picasso "Au Cabaret (En la Taberna. Printed by Lacourière in 1942. Due to shortages of paper because of the war, he used the paper the Suite Vollard had been printed on. According to Bernhard Geiser, author of the catalogue raisonné of 1968, both editions were in the possession of the artist until 1966, neither signed nor numbered. One half of the edition was printed in black, the other in brown-black. The present work was printed in brown-black. In addition to the edition of 1942, another edition of 65 was printed in 1961, on Richard de Bas paper, for the "La caisse à remords" suite. This suite comprised 45 etchings of the years 1919 to 1955, and was published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris. Provenance Marina Picasso Private collection, USA Exhibited Bloch, Georges. Of every print Picasso executed there, 5 artist proofs were printed outside the edition for Picasso himself, plus a sixth print for the printer Mourlot. In the catalogue raisonné of Picasso's prints edited by Mourlot later, he only mentioned the 5 artist proofs, but not the sixth print. The present exemplar is such a sixth print, it can therefore be presumed that it came from Fernand Mourlot's own collection. In 1953, at the age of 72, Picasso started taking an interest in the technique of linocut, which had been neglected by artists for decades. His starting point, in 1953, was a series of posters for the “Toros of Vallauris” and the temporary “Exposition de Vallauris”, annual exhibitions of ceramics by local potters. Between autumn 1958 and spring 1962, working together with the printer Hidalgo Arnéra of Vallauris, he created 45 large-format linocuts with hitherto unrivalled linear, surface and colour effects. The high-pressure linocut technique is a complicated process in which a separate plate must be prepared for each colour using a gouge. Picasso took to the new medium with his characteristic pleasure in experimentation and variation, and created particularly striking coloured prints. He produced this portrait of his wife Jacqueline in January 1962 in Mougins. It shows a magnificent linocut in four colours (three different brown tones and black), with clearly delimited colour fields accentuating her severe, classically beautiful countenance.
