Secu r aG o l d The complete solution for hot & cold potable water plumbing Quieter With a low thermal expansion and given the flexibility of the material, Polybutylene piping systems are quiet with no water hammer and minimal system creaking. Flexiblity Polybutylene can be repeatedly flexed without harm. This reduces the need for elbows thereby minimising frictional loss and also aids in a faster install with fewer fittings. 100% recyclable recycled Polybutylene is recyclable and as a result, is great for use in buildings where ‘green’ products are required. The PB Advantage What’s the advantage of polybutylene over other hot and cold water pipe systems? Temperature resistance Polybutylene has high thermal insulation values. Hot water pipes are cooler to the touch than conventional metal pipes and the incidence of condensation on the pipes is reduced, providing a safer system. In freezing situations ice formation will cause no damage as the pipe’s flexibility accommodates the expansion. The pipe will return to its original state upon thawing. FLEXIBILITY QUIETER Larger bore VALUE Despite the obvious advantages of Polybutylene, it actually one of the lowest cost hot and cold water systems on the market. 100% RECYCLABLE LARGE BORE PB PEX COPPER To ensure you get the most out of using a PB system, insist on SecuraGold. Compared to other plastic plumbing pipe materials, size for size. Polybutylene has the largest bore and as a result can provide better flow rates. VALUE TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE the PB system of choice Pipe advantages Polybutylene pipe has excellent properties as demonstrated by the PB advantage page (opposite). SecuraGold pipe is the PB pipe of choice given these features: • SecuraGold pipe is available in 5, 25 and 50m straights and coils, including the revolutionary ‘lay straight’ coils. These allow for easy installation as the pipe retains ‘memory’ of being straight and as a result, when unwrapped, the coil returns to a straighter form then conventionally coiled pipe. This allows installers all the benefits of easily transportable coils yet giving the installation benefits of straight pipe. • SecuraGold pipe comes in 15, 18, 22 and 28mm pipe sizes. This wide range of sizing allows installers to use a size that is perfect for each job without having to compromise. With the availability of 28mm pipe, even large scale commercial projects can be fitted with SecuraGold pipe. • SecuraGold is ideal for underfloor heating applications given its long service life and its high pressure and temperature resistance. • SecuraGold has an exceptionally smooth bore meaning high flow rates and no build ups of scale or mineral deposits. FittingS advantages SecuraGold fittings are precision manufactured from DR brass giving strength and durability. Eye-spy inspection holes provide a visual confirmation to installers, inspectors and home owners that a joint has been assembled correctly. Crimp rings are already located on the fitting by way of an EVA ring connection, this allows for easy installation as the crimp rings are correctly located and ready for crimping. Innovative keeper plugs minimise damage to crimp rings and prevent contamination prior to jointing. www.philmacaquadux.com.au Material properties pipe properties Pipe Dimesions Nominal size Outer Pipe Diameter Minimum Wall Thickness Straight Lengths Coil Lengths • High flow rates 15mm 12.8 1.6 5m 50m • The ability to withstand all temperatures found in normal water reticulation system – as low as -50˚C up to 99˚C intermittently 18mm 16 1.6 5m 50m 25m 22mm 22.3 2.1 5m 50m 25m 28mm 28.2 2.7 5m 50m 25m • Odourless • Non toxic • Highest pressure rating of any flexible thermoplastic up to 6.90Mpa Straight Coil Lengths • Strong, robust material • Resistant to soaps, detergents and most acids and alkalis below 96˚C and many solvents at room temperatures • High thermal insulation • VOC rating (Volatile organic rating) • Chemically inert – can be connected safely to any other type of pipe system working pressure Working temperature 20˚C 40˚C 60˚C 70˚C 80˚C Max. The above temperature pressure combinations are maximum continuous values and should not be exceeded. • Water Hammer And Surge – Polybutylene can easily withstand the effects of water hammer because of its high elastic modulus. It dampens rather than propagates pressure waves and the associated pipe noise. Under extreme conditions of service water hammer arrestors may be advisable. • Freezing – Ice formation causes no damage as the pipe’s flexibility accommodates expansion. The pipe will return to its original state upon thawing. It must be pointed out, however, that a small section of Polybutylene pipe in an otherwise rigid system cannot protect the pipe system from the effects of freezing. Only where a significant proportion of Polybutylene pipe is used will the effects of freezing be minimised. • Always check with your local council for any specific requirements for lagging in freezing conditions. DR brass properties • The SecuraGold fittings comply with AS/NZS 1567, AS 2345 and AS/NZS 2642. • Durable • Robust material • Not affected by temperatures and pressures normally encountered in plumbing systems - Brass will handle temperatures in excess of 100˚C - Pressure ratings for Brass are in excess of Polybutylene. The following procedure must be followed: Local Authority Approval Supports Dux SecuraGold has the Australian Standards Mark. Therefore is approved by local authorities. However, special conditions may apply to some areas. Always check with your local authority before installation. The maximum spacing between supports shall be in accordance with the requirements of AS3500. Use purpose made clips which have been designed to permit free thermal movement. DO NOT use metal pipe clips. System identification 1 Make certain that the pipe end is cut clean, square and free from burrs. 2 Push pipe right up to fitting shoulder. The correct depth of pipe into the fitting is approximately 13mm. Do not use a lubricant. Ensure pipe is visible through eye-spy holes. 3 Position crimp tool jaws centrally over the crimp ring at 90˚ to the pipe, and close handle to stop point. All pipes and fittings are identified with the Dux name. Ensure that only pipe and fittings marked in this way are used to guarantee satisfactory performance. Pipe Size Horizontal or Graded Clipping Distance (mm) Vertical Clipping Distance (mm) 15mm 600 1200 18mm 600 1200 22mm 700 1400 Storage and handling 28mm 750 1500 Polybutylene is not UV resistant and should be stored under cover. In installations exposed to direct sunlight pipework must be covered with a protective sleeve. Its flexibility permits considerable freedom of handling, but care should be taken not to cut, abrade or crush the pipe. All fittings should be treated in a similar manner. Any pipe installed externally or where the pipe passes through walls must be encapsulated in ducting pipe or other material such as lagging to avoid UV or wear damage. Coils should be stacked a maximum of 10 high. Heavy and sharp objects must not be placed on top of pipe. Tension Bending Testing Polybutylene pipe can be repeatedly flexed without harm. The recommended minimum bending radius is ten times the pipe diameter. Where tighter bends are required, elbows must be used. Care should be taken to avoid overbending and buckling the pipe. If accidentally ‘kinked’, the damaged section must be replaced. In accordance with AS/NZS 3500, the installation must be pressure tested after installation, to a hydrostatic pressure of 1500 kPa at 20˚C for a period of not less than 30 minutes. Pressure testing before lining is good trade practice and is strongly recommended. The SecuraGold male and female test caps have been specifically designed to facilitate testing. Under concrete Polybutylene can be installed under concrete in accordance with AS3500 or to Local Authority requirements 4 Check each crimp joint with the ‘Go’ gauge. If the gauge does not fit over the ring, the ring is under-crimped. Remove fitting and ring and replace. Note: Joints can only be crimped once. If a joint does not pass the gauge test, check: 1 The joint has in fact been crimped. 2 Re-adjust tool until correct crimping occurs. If unsatisfactory, cut-out and replace with new fitting. Where pipework leaves or enters a concrete slab it must be sleeved for the full depth of the slab penetration. Joints should be avoided under concrete. Do not pull pipe tight during installation as this will restrict pipe movement during expansion and contraction. Expansion The linear expansion rate for Polybutylene pipe is approximately 13mm per 10˚C temperature change for every 10 metres of pipe. Make allowance for expansion based on this value. For most installations this low expansion rate combined with the pipe’s flexibility eliminates the need to allow for expansion. Pipes must not be anchored rigidly or pulled tight between fixed points. Note: When pressure testing additions to an existing installation, it is advisable to cap the addition and test independently, as the existing pipework and fixtures may be damaged by the high test pressure. The SecuraGold system fully complies with the Australian Standard AS/NZ 2642 Parts 2 and 3 and has Standards Mark Licence No. 1289. Concrete walls Polybutylene should be placed in a formed chase wrapped with an impermeable flexible material. Avoid joints wherever possible. The SecuraGold system must be installed to the requirements of AS/NZ3500. AS 2642.2 Lic1289 SAI Global Pipe and fittings are manufactured in ISO 9001 certified facilities frequently asked questions How high a water temperature can SecuraGold handle? Why is a SecuraGold pipe flexible? How does the weather affect the SecuraGold system? The highest continuous rating is 80˚C at 760 Kpa however Polybutylene pipe will handle intermittent flows of water as hot as 99˚C without deterioration. Installation is a lot simpler no more notching out framing as with rigid pipes. Simply drill holes and feed the pipe through them the way an electrician does with his cables. Also, using flexible coils of pipe can often reduce the number of joints required. It doesn’t – the degree of flexibility of Polybutylene doesn’t change in the severe cold or heat. It’s just as easy to handle and doesn’t become brittle in cold weather. The fittings are equally unaffected by extremes of weather. What about water hammer? What about ‘liming up’ in Polybutylene? Is SecuraGold affected by freezing? No, the pipe stays flexible even at temperatures as low as -50˚C. Does Polybutylene have a high expansion rate? Temperature changes have only a slight effect on Polybutylene. For every 10˚C change, 10 metres of pipe will expand or contract only 13mm, which is a lot less than most plastics. Is it a complete system? Defintely, everything that’s needed for a standard plumbing system is there, including copper breeches for sinks, baths and showers. Polybutylene is a flexible piping system and absorbs the shock that causes noise, reducing the hammer effect. What are coiled straights? 25m coiled straights have been through a process that virtually eliminates the coil spring effect as the pipe is drawn out of the roll. They offer the convenience of 5m straight pipe with less waste. This equates to easier transport and handling. There isn’t any! Polybutylene is chemically inert. What about other water conditions? Polybutylene is perfect for handling all kinds of water conditions – there is no lime-up, no rust or corrosion, no erosion, no discolouration and no taste. Can you connect SecuraGold to other pipe systems of a different material? The SecuraGold range includes a range of brazing tails, compression adapters and threaded connectors to enable easy connection to other pipe systems. Available From: www.philmacaquadux.com.au
