Our new President - Behind the Scenes
For a supposedly retired guy, Kenny Podmore sure is busy. When he came
to Canada from the U.K. 15 years ago, Podmore was a retired transportation department head for a social services agency and had spent time as a military policeman. He and his wife Anita came to Sidney and fell in love with the
community.
Wanting to give a little something back to the town that welcomed them, Podmore began to volunteer in various roles. He soon found that he had a lot more to
give and his wife suggested that perhaps he wasn’t quite ready for the rigors of
full retirement yet. “She was quite right,” he says.
After getting his work permit, Podmore found a job with the Commissionaires
and spend eight years with them. Later on, he saw a new hotel being built on the
Sidney waterfront (today’s Sidney Pier Hotel) and he wondered if they would be
looking for a concierge. He inquired about it during the early stages of the construction. “ I was called back for an interview and got the job and was almost their
first hire there. I started with them in April 2007 and it officially opened in May and
June that year.” Podmore said he is very lucky to have gotten such a job, adding
he considers it worth more to him than just the pay cheque. “It’s a wonderful,
family atmosphere that offers the personal touch,” he said. “This is my way of saying thank-you and giving a little back.”
He considers himself a people person and that shows in Podmore’s other
roles as the community Town Crier, for both Sidney and Oak Bay, to his seat on
Sidney Town Council. All in all he said, he thinks his family and Sidney have
been a great match. But why continue to work? Podmore said people his age
(seniors) have a lot to offer by way of their years of experience. “Seniors have a
good work ethic and we’re reliable.” He admitted there is always something new
to learn — such as technology — but the basics are still there, like people skills
and pride in service. He encourages other seniors to stay in the workforce, maybe
try something new. “Start with volunteering, say with Beacon Community Services. It’s a great way to start and it worked for me.”
Kenny’s work ethic and people skills extend to fund raising which has been
very successful. Two years ago he raised over $3200.00 which he personally
presented, on behalf of the people of Sidney, to Lac Megantic after their disaster.
Last summer he organized a very successful fundraiser at Mary Windspear for a
charitable school in South Africa which cares for orphan children who have AIDS.
The school is apparently run by a lady who used to live in Victoria and he keeps
in contact through the Internet.
He is currently on his way to this school in South Africa to stay two or three
weeks and is scheduled to return November 11th.

As the Club is in good financial state it was
announced that the meeting fee will be reduced to
$1 from January 2017 onward.

Golf: Ron Gurney: September 15 was the last
tournament of the season, held at Ardmore.
Duffer's trophy was won by Rick Gilmore. The Most
Honest Golfer was Gwilym Evans. Andy Rosequist will
be golf chair next year.
Management Committee Reports
Treasurer: Current balance is $ 4947.83 80 members have paid to date, and there are 15 lifetime members, so there are still 18 or so to come in.
Membership: Today's attendance was 58 plus one
guest. Current membership is 113, vs 116 at the
beginning of the year.

Mr Girouard started by explaining that the Western region consists of the area from the
Ontario border to the west coast and North as far as the Arctic. About 1000 people are
employed, with an annual budget of $100 million.
There are six large vessels, most are well over 30 years old. Two smaller vessels are new, the rest of the fleet is
also ageing. Ten lifeboat stations are situated along the west coast.
Major areas of operation include Search and Rescue, Traffic, Infrastructure (buoys and
radar stations) and environmental response. Traffic is predicted to increase by 20% with
more pipelines and LNG terminals.
Current problems include the fact that many employees have not been paid for
many weeks due to the Government's computer payroll debacle in Ottawa.

Rick Gilmore won the Duffer Trophy - Gwil Evans most Honest golfer.
Golf Committee Chair Ron Gurney thanked his 6 Member Commitee
and all the golfers who turned out for a very successful season. Andy
Rosequist hosted this event and will be 2017 Committee Chair. Paul
Woodland organized the windup and was delighted with the turnout
and the donations of prizes including 2 rounds from Ardmore and gifts
from Stan Hegstrom and Rick Gilmore.
