Remove the four 5/16 headed screws located at the bottom of the front panel 3. After the screws have been removed, grasp the panel on both sides and pull forward. Allow the panel to drop free of the top assembly and set aside. INSTALLATION OF FRONT PANEL 1. Locate left and right side of front panel over pin guides on cabinet. 2. Raise top and prop up 3. Remove bezel; read next line for instructions 4. Unhook spring from back side of bezel 5. Take a flat head screwdriver and gently pry in between the bezel and the outer tub (we are making sure not to shear off the plastic tabs on the bezel). Gently pry the four corners first and then continue going around the bezel so that the tabs release. Pull bezel out paying close attention on how it was seated (see illus. 1). Illustration 1 6. Remove drive pulley by loosening set screws 7. File off burrs (if any) on drive shaft (see illus. 2) 8. Remove four bolts holding shaft to inner tub (drive and support shaft); (see illus. 3) 1. Remove the two gaskets on front bearing housing, and the one gasket on the rear bearing housing (see illus. 6) 13. Remove Magnetic switch from old bearing assembly. 14. Install Magnetic switch on new front bearing assembly. 15. Add new grease to seal area of new bearing assembly and to the shaft 16. Install O-Rings on new shafts; slide up to step on shaft 17. Reinstall the bearing assemblies by reversing the above process (see illus. 5, 6 & 7) 18. Insert inner tub into outer tub. Note: the door with the ‘Press Here’ tab should be on the left. 19. Install rear tub support shaft. 20. Install rear bolt, lock washer, fender washer and tighten. 21. Install the rear flange cover putting the stainless steel flat washers between the head of the bolt & flange cover. 22. Install front tub drive shaft with the flat portion facing straight down toward the motor. 23. Align the drive pulley’s magnet with the bearing assembly’s magnetic switch. 24. Install the spacer and then the pulley on the drive shaft. 25. Install safety bolt, lock washer and fender washer on drive shaft. 26. Tighten the pulley’s set screws on shaft. 27. Install the safety wire into the pulley’s predrilled hole and the safety bolt twisting the ends together. 28. Install front flange cover putting the stainless flat washers between the head of the bolt and the flange cover. 29. Before you reinstall the bezel, straighten the four corner edges of the outer tub with a pair of pliers or Channel Locks where you had removed the bezel. 30. Reinstall the bezel into the outer tub; you can use a rubber mallet to help get the tabs into place. 31. To keep the bezel tight, you can crimp the sides with a pair of Channel Locks. 32. Phone 614-548-0098 • FAX 614-836-9524 Procedure for Replacing Control Board (Part # 813224 or 813226) This is a brief procedure for servicing the motor control board. Depending on your serial number, the new control board may appear different than the board you are replacing. A. First unplug the machine from its power source. B. Remove the four screws located at the bottom of the front panel. This will require a 5/16-nut driver or a socket. Note: Notice the position of the front panel in regards to the top panel. This position will be important when replacing the front panel. C. With all four screws removed, pull out and down on the front panel. There are two locating pins on each side of the front of the cabinet; you will need to clear these pins. The panel should now be clear of the machine. Set this panel to the side. D. Remove the two 5/16-headed screws located at the upper left and right corner of the edge of the cabinet. These two screws will allow access to the interior of the machine. Set these two screws aside separate from the other four screws because they may be different on your machine. E. Lift up on the front of the top until the two front clips have cleared the edge of the cabinet. Note: Secure the lid to the top panel with a piece of tape or some other means. Once the top is raised vertically, the lid might open and fall backwards. This could damage the lid or cause it to become detached from the top. F. Pull the plastic top assembly towards you an inch to free up the hinges on the back. Then lift the top until you can gain access to the rear wall of the cabinet. Note: Again, secure the top so it will remain open while you are working in this area. If the top is not secured, it could fall closed while you are working in this area. G. The motor control board is now accessible. The location of the board is on the rear upper right corner of the cabinet. H. Removal of the control board (for models HXW2300, HXW2301, HXW2302, HXW2303, and HXW2304 to Aug. ‘01 control board replacement) 1. Remove both of the wire connections on top of the control board. Note: It is advisable to secure the board with your free hand while removing the wire connections. 2. The right-hand connector will pull off. It may require a little force to pull the connector free. Again, secure the board with your free hand while removing this connector. 3. The left-hand connector has two retaining clips on either side of the connector. While squeezing these two connectors, rock the connector back and forth until the connector is free. 4. Disconnect the two wires on the circuit board that connect to the circuit breaker. These will no longer be needed with the new control board. 5. To release the board from the four standoffs, there is a latching pin in the center of the standoff that sticks through the board. Depress this latch while gently pulling out on the corner of the board. Repeat this procedure until all four corners are free. Now the board can be removed from the machine. 6. Remove all four plastic standoffs. I. Removal of the control board (For model HXW2304 after Aug. ’01) 1. Remove right-hand wire connector as indicated in H-2 above J. K. L. M. 2. Remove left-hand wire harness connector as indicated in H-3 above 3. Remove three plastic thumb screws from the three corners of the aluminum plate 4. Remove three plastic standoffs from stud 5. Remove control board from mounting studs To replace the board, perform this procedure in reverse. 1. (For model HXW2300, HXW2301, HXW2302, HXW2303, and HXW2304 prior to Aug. ’01) Slide the control board’s studs into the standoff holes in the back of the machine. 2. (For HXW2304 after Aug. ’01) Put control board on mounting studs; install standoffs and thumbnuts. Note: The left-hand connection can go on only one way. There is a flat side on one of the connections that only allows the connector to be inserted one way. Also, the right-hand connector (called J2) will go on with the silver terminals facing up (*see photo below). Lower the top back into position and re-set the two hinges into place on the back. 1. While lowering the top, ensure that the rubber skirt is located in the gray bezel. The bezel is the plastic insert that covers the spinner basket. There is a channel around the bezel that locates the skirt. This is the section that has the hump on the bezel. Ensure that all four sides of the skirt are located in this area or there is great risk of water escaping during wash and spin. 2. Ensure that the two top clips are located behind the edge of the cabinet in the front. Replace and tighten two of the 5/16 headed screws. Replace the front panel and tighten the four 5/16 headed screws. 1. Ensure that the top of the front panel is properly located or the panel will rattle during spin. This panel also gives the machine its stability and if it is not located properly damage may be incurred. 2. Guide the front panel over the two location pins. 3. Align the holes at the bottom of the front panel and tighten the four 5/16 headed screws. Remove the restraint that is securing the lid and open. Rotate the basket until the doors are facing down. With some force, press down on the basket with both hands. Visually inspect to see that the rubber skirt is positioned in the bezel. Note: Please return defective board within two weeks. (Return via regular mail, no insurance or Priority Mail required, using box it was shipped in and label provided.) Phone 614-548-0098 • FAX 614-836-9524 REPLACING A MECHANICAL TIMER 1. Unplug machine. 2. Using a Philips screwdriver, remove the six screws on the control panel. 3. Push timer knob in, gently pull control panel forward, and pull black pin on back of timer out about a half an inch (see Figure 1). Figure 1 4. After pulling the black pin out, this will allow you to remove the large knob, disk, and small spacer off the front of control panel. 5. Remove the plastic wire tie around the wire harness connected to the timer (see Figure 2). Figure 2 6. Lift up gently on plastic tab to remove wire harness plug (see Figure 3). Figure 3 7. Remove screw (see Figure 4), lift tab, then slide timer to the left to remove. Figure 4 8. Reverse procedure to install new timer. When it is time to put the knob on, put the knob on while making sure the black pin on the back of the timer is pushed in all the way until you hear it ‘click’ into place. Phone 614-548-0098 • FAX 614-836-9524 CHECKING FOR STUCK BRUSHES & CONTINUITY ON A MOTOR 1. Disconnect the washer from the power source. 2. Remove the four 5/16 headed screws located at the bottom of the front panel. 3. After the screws have been removed, grasp the panel on both sides and pull forward. Allow the panel to drop free of the top assembly and set aside. 4. You will need a pencil, pen, or small screw driver. 5. The motor is under the tub. 6. On the right side of the motor about 7/8th’s of the way back there is a square hole that is a little larger than a pencil. On the back side of this hole there is a piece of rubbery siliconetype material. Do not push on this piece of silicone; we are using it as a guide only. Put the screwdriver in front of the piece of silicone and insert it into the motor approximately ½ inch. You should hit something hard. If you go in more than ½ inch you are not in the correct spot. When you hit something hard give it a nudge, you will not feel it move. Now, while applying pressure on this same spot manually turn the drum with the pulley 2-3 revolutions and you should hear a ‘friction buzzing’ sound and feel some bumps. 7. Go to the left side of the motor. This is the same hole, same spot, same situation, but the hole is behind the flange that is part of the motor housing that comes out over the wire harness. Do the same thing: Put the screwdriver in front of the piece of silicone and insert it into the motor approximately ½ inch. You should hit something hard. If you go in more than ½ inch you are not in the correct spot. When you hit something hard give it a nudge, you will not feel it move. Now, while applying pressure on this same spot manually turn the drum with the pulley 2-3 revolutions and you should hear a ‘friction buzzing’ sound and feel some bumps. 8. Plug machine back in and turn the timer knob straight down to the floor just beyond the spin and the motor should start to turn. This is a view of the left side of the motor towards the back looking at the hole where you need to push in on the brush. This is a view of the right side of the motor towards the back looking at the hole where you need to push in on the brush. (CONTINUED ON BACK) 9. If the machine does not start, then you would need to check for continuity on the motor. You will need a multi-meter (or volt-meter), and put it on ‘OHMS’. 10. Disconnect the washer from the power source. 11. Unplug the wiring harness from the motor. 12. There are eight pins on the motor. Counting from the top down you would need to check for continuity (the needle should move as opposed to staying still) between pins 1-2, 1-3, 2-3, 4-5, and 6-7. Pins 4-5 are the brushes. If you do not have continuity between any of these pins, then the motor would need to be replaced. If you have continuity between all pins, then the motor is good. This is a front view of the motor. The motor is located at the front bottom of the outer tub. The hole for the brush is behind this flange that the wire harness is connected to on the left side of the motor. Phone 614-548-0098 • FAX 614-836-9524 REPLACING A MOTOR 1. Disconnect the washer from the power source. 2. Remove the four 5/16 headed screws located at the bottom of the front panel. 3. After the screws have been removed, grasp the panel on both sides and pull forward. Allow the panel to drop free of the top assembly and set aside. 4. Note position of wiring plug on the motor and remove plug from motor. 5. Remove the belt adjustment bolt and drive belt from motor. 6. Remove clip and washer from pivot shaft. Slide shaft to rear far enough to allow motor to come off shaft. 7. Remove all rubber leg grommets from old motor and install on replacement motor. 8. Position replacement motor on shaft, slide shaft into position and secure with washer and clip. Install drive belt adjustment bolt on motor. Install drive belt, adjust belt tension so that there is approximately 1/4-1/2 ” deflection on either side of the belt midway between the two pulleys (or 65-70 foot/lbs.) and tighten adjustment bolt. 9. Install wiring plug on new motor as noted above. 10. Plug power cord into electrical receptacle. Test installation by momentarily pulling out on the timer knob and verifying that the inner tub rotates. 11. Install front panel on clothes washer by locating left and right side of front panel over the guide pins on the cabinet. 12. While applying upward pressure, screw the four 5/16 headed screws back into the bottom of the front panel. Disconnect the washer from the power source. Remove the four 5/16 headed screws located at the bottom of the front panel. After the screws have been removed, grasp the panel on both sides and pull forward. Allow the panel to drop free of the top assembly and set aside. Remove safety wire (Part No. 818361) from old pulley. Remove front bolt and washer (Part No.’s 42, 41) Back-out set-screws or set-bolts on old pulley by unscrewing with a 5/32”allen wrench or 5/16” closed-end wrench. Grasp opposite sides and pull the old pulley toward you until off. Wiggle pulley while pulling may be necessary. Clean shaft with a rag. File down ridges with a small fine file where set-screw was until shaft is smooth Clean and polish with a strip from a sheet of fine emery cloth or wet-dry sand paper (600 grit) Inspect the new pulley making sure the set-bolts are backed-out and recessed in the pulley body so they cannot touch the shaft. Wipe the inside of the pulley with a rag to make sure there are no small bits of dirt, grit, or machine shaving. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16. 17. 18. 19. 20. 21. Push the new pulley onto shaft by wiggling at different spokes. Or you can wiggle, turn pulley, then again wiggle the pulley at two different spokes, turn, etc. Continue until the back of the pulley is “snug” against the rear spacer washer. Note: If this does not work put a small piece of wood (block from a 2x4) against the center of the pulley. Then gently tap the block with a small hammer. Rotate the pulley after a few taps to insure it goes on straight. Continue until the back side of the pulley center is against the back spacer (Part No. 40) See Figure, Parts, Page 17 in Operator’s Manual. Turn pulley and make sure it turns smoothly and is not making any scraping sounds or feels loose. You can inspect the back of the pulley with a small compact mirror and a flashlight to insure the pulley is pushed far enough onto the shaft. Clean all dirt and any oil on front bolt and washer from above Step 5 (Part No.’s 42, 41). Put a few drops of thread sealant on threads. Then, replace lock washer, flat washer, and front bolt. Tighten front bolt with a 7/16” wrench or socket. Run the supplied safety wire through the drilled hole in the spoke of the pulley and hole of the bolt head. Bend the ends so they are of equal length side-by-side. With a pair of vise grips, grip both wires then twist until they are braided to the bolt head. CAUTION: DO NOT TWIST THE WIRE IN HALF. With a pair of side cutters, cut off the excess leaving from ½ to 1 inch in length of twist. Now, tighten both set-bolts with a 5/16” wrench or socket and ratchet. Replace belt by attaching to small motor shaft at bottom then working belt onto new large pulley. Adjust belt tension so that there is approximately 1/4” deflection on either side of the belt midway between the two pulleys (or 65-70 foot/lbs.) and tighten adjustment bolt. Check belt tightness by pushing inward at mid-point between the pulleys. It should not stretch or move inward more than a ¼” from its original position. If belt is too loose, refer to replacing drive motor and belt tightening instructions on page 10 of the Operator’s Manual. Note: This might be a good time to grease both bearings (Parts No.25). Squeeze a small amount (less than 1 oz.) of white lithium grease in both front and back bearings. Locate the small yellow plastic cap or plug on-top of the front bearings. Next remove the two screws to lift the top and lid assembly, pull the top and lid assembly forward an inch or two, lift top and lid assembly up and locate the rear bearings. Remove each cap then lubricate by pushing the nose of the small tube firmly into the hole. Squeeze a small amount of white lithium grease into each opening. Replace the cap and wipe away any excess. Phone 614-548-0098 • FAX 614-836-9524 Replacing the Struts 1. Be sure you have disconnected the power to the washer. 2. Move the washer out in the open. Lay a piece of cardboard or a blanket on the floor to protect the side of the washer. 3. Carefully lay the washer on its right side (facing the machine), and remove the front panel by taking out the four (4) 5/16” screws that hold the panel in place (located at the bottom of the front panel). 4. Locate the four struts. 5. Remove the four (4) nuts that hold the struts to the machines’ base. 6. Grab hold of the lower (narrower portion) part of the strut and push towards the upper (wider portion) part of the strut. This will collapse the strut enough to allow you to remove the lower part of the strut. Do this for each strut you will be replacing. 7. Remove the nuts that hold the upper part of the strut in place. Remove the upper part of the strut. 8. You now should have all struts out of the machine. In order to install the new struts, all you have to do is reverse the order of what you just did. You will need to hold back on the thin portion of the upper part of the strut in order to tighten the nut. 9. After you have installed all of the struts, replace the front panel and carefully stand the washer back to its original position. 10. Make certain that the tub assembly is positioned in the opening through the top. Also, check to see if the skirt is down in the gray bezel properly. 11.
