Chancellor’s welcome
Welcome to the West Plains Civic
Center! On behalf of the students,
faculty and staff at Missouri State
University-West Plains, thank you
for joining us. We hope you enjoy the
match and find West Plains to be a
welcoming and friendly community.
At Missouri State-West Plains we
strive to provide a true and rewarding
college experience for our students
inside and outside of the classroom. Academically, our

Additionally, numerous resources, such as free tutoring

our faculty and staff, have resulted in a fully-accredited
institution of higher education that is recognized as one of
the best in the country.
In 2014, the Grizzly Basketball team continued its tradition
of excellence with a team of newcomers to the program.
The Grizzlies finished the season with a 21-11 overall
record, and in a very competitive Region 16, they tied for
third overall and for the second best region record in the
regular season standings. In addition, they defeated two
Top 10 opponents and one opponent that was receiving
Top 25 votes at the time of the game. For their efforts,
Jameel Moore, Craig Eubanks and Terrel Martin-Garcia
were named first team All-Region 16, and Dazhonetae
Bennett was named to the second team. We are quick to
note, however, that much of the their success should be
attributed to the support of the West Plains community,
which is second to none.
Again, welcome to West Plains. We at Missouri StateWest Plains strive each day to teach and treat students
with world-class excellence. Our desire is to help each of
our students reach the goals they have set for themselves.
We invite you to explore our campus and our educational
programs for yourself. We think you will be very pleased.
Dr. Drew Bennett
We began our efforts to provide a quality collegiate program
of study to area residents over 50 years ago, thanks to the
foresight of a group of community-minded citizens. Their
vision to make higher education more accessible to those

Through a cooperative agreement with the City of West Plains, the
Grizzlies have “home-court advantage” in the 2,800-seat arena.
If home is where the heart is, then the heart of the Grizzly
Basketball program is the West Plains Civic Center arena. Opened
in 1993, this impressive arena accommodates approximately
2,800 raucous Grizzly fans in comfortable, theater-style seating.
Its facilities create a dynamic atmosphere that gives a whole new
meaning to the phrase “home-court advantage.”
The West Plains Civic Center gives student-athletes greater
access to physical fitness and training programs through its fullyequipped, 4,525-square-foot fitness center managed by Keri
Elrod, a certified athletic trainer and strength and conditioning
specialist. Keri works closely with the coaches of the Grizzly
Basketball team to develop and implement rigorous strength
and conditioning programs for student-athletes, utilizing the
variety of free weights, weight machines and fitness equipment
housed in the center.
The fully-equipped, 4,525-square-foot fitness center and collegiate-size swimming pool are managed by Missouri State UniversityWest Plains Certified Athletic Trainer Keri Elrod.

Advisement Services
Student-athletes can receive help to stay on course
academically through the Advisement and Academic Coaching
Center for Empowering Student Success (AACCESS),
which provides advising services for all students. For college
experiences to be as meaningful as possible, student-athletes
need to gather information and develop goals that provide the
basis for decisions relating to course work and future plans.
AACCESS advisors help students in this decision-making
process. As coordinators of the students’ learning experiences,
AACCESS advisors also monitor students’ progress toward their
educational and career goals with regular advising sessions.
Academic Support Services
Studying, critical thinking, grammar, writing, vocabulary,
test taking, listening, mathematics, note taking and memory
skills are essential to student success. Student-athletes can
hone these skills at the Grizzly Tutoring Lab (GTL). GTL staff
8
provide a variety of services, including individualized math and
English tutoring and study groups for a number of classes and
educational disciplines. The GTL computer lab is equipped with
several computer stations that offer students self-paced learning
programs in English mechanics, speed reading, study skills,
memory improvement, reading comprehension and vocabulary.
Tutors also are made available during scheduled study hall hours.
Grizzly “Paws” Program
The Grizzly PAWS Program (Promoting Academic
Success With Student-Athletes) provides additional
support to student-athletes to help them succeed in the
classroom. In addition to subject-based tutoring, studentathletes participate in an evening study hall where staff
supervise small groups and assist student-athletes in
their daily studies. Team grade point averages have risen
significantly since the program was implemented.

Season Preview
The 2015-2016 schedule provides the perfect opportunity
for the Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzly Basketball
team to be playing its best basketball in late February and March.
The season opens on Oct. 30 at the State Fair Community
College Classic against the Butler Community College Grizzlies
from Kansas, who finished last season 29-4 and ranked No. 7 in
the final NJCAA poll, and Link Year Prep from Branson. The
following weekend the Grizzlies open their home season at Joe
Paul Evans Arena against Graceland University junior varsity
from Lamoni, Iowa, and College of Faith of West Memphis,
Arkansas, in the Holiday Inn Grizzly Tip-Off Classic.
The Grizzlies hit the road for a three game stretch the
following week. They will face the junior varsity squad at Ottawa
University in Kansas, as well as Division II power Des Moines
Area Community College and traditional national powerhouse
Iowa Western Community College at the Iowa Western Classic
in Council Bluffs.
On Nov. 18, the Grizzlies will return home for their first ever
Missouri Community College Athletic Conference (MCCAC)
game against St. Louis Community College. After one home
game, though, the Grizzlies return to the road to face an always
tough Arkansas Baptist College and North Lake College at the
North Arkansas College Classic in Harrison. After that, it is off to
Garden City, Kansas, to face perennial Top 25 contender Seward
County Community College and Garden City Community
College at the Garden City Thanksgiving Classic.
A change to the schedule this year sees the Grizzlies opening
Region 16 play before the holiday break on Dec. 5 at Three Rivers
College. That game also is a MCCAC contest. The Grizzlies
will close out the semester against a very talented Northern
10
Oklahoma College-Tonkawa team on Dec. 11 and a return game
from the Iowa Western Community College Reivers on Dec. 12
in the Grizzly Christmas Classic sponsored by the City of West
Plains. The event also will feature the Gainesville and West Plains
High School ladies basketball teams on Dec. 12. Finally, Richard
J. Daley College from Chicago, Illinois, comes to West Plains
Dec. 15 to complete the first semester of games.
After the holiday break, the Grizzly New Year’s Classic will
feature games against Link Year Prep and Quakerdale Promise
Academy of New Providence, Iowa, on Jan. 1 and 2, respectively.
On Jan. 6, the Grizzlies return a game to Northern OklahomaTonkawa before their next Region 16 and MCCAC contest
against Mineral Area College at home on Jan. 9. After that game,
the Grizzlies will travel to Chicago to once again face Richard J.
Daley College then return to Joe Paul Evans Arena Jan. 16 to face
Three Rivers College for the 2016 Homecoming Game.
The Grizzles will then embark on a tough road stretch
that will include games at Region 16/MCCAC opponents
State Fair and Mineral Area College, Region 16 rival Moberly
Area Community College and MCCAC opponent St. Louis
Community College. To finish out the season, the Grizzlies
will host College of Faith Feb. 6, State Fair Feb. 9 and Moberly
Area Community College Feb. 19. As has been the tradition, the
Moberly game also will be Sophomore Night.
The Region 16 Tournament returns to Joplin, Missouri, for
the second straight year, and the District 4 game will be held at
the Region 16 champion’s home court. The NJCAA Division I
Men’s National Basketball Tournament is set for March 14-19 in
Hutchinson, Kansas.
2015-16 Season Preview
2015-16
Team Outlook
Two returning sophomore forwards will make up the core
of the 2015-16 Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzly
Basketball team, but based on their results last year, Ngor
Barnaba, Rochester, Minnesota, and Terrel Martin-Garcia,
London, England, are up for the challenge.
Barnaba averaged almost 9 points and six rebounds a game
last season while shooting 37 percent from three and over 70
percent from the free throw line. Martin-Garcia was one of four
Grizzlies to average above 12 points per game in 2014-15 and
was the team’s leading rebounder with nearly eight grabs per
game. He also was very efficient shooting, hitting 36 percent of
his 3-point attempts and 54 percent of his shots from the field.
Antonio Winn, Kansas City, transferred to Missouri State-West
Plains last spring, and he will fill the sophomore point guard slot
on this year’s team.
As for the freshmen, the Grizzlies will feature the best
mix of strength and quickness on the perimeter in Yancey
Walker’s tenure as head coach. Mike Asemota, Brampton,
Ontario, Canada; Juwan Green, Edgard, Louisiana; Vonny Irvin,
Cincinnati, Ohio; Eddie Reese, Southfield, Michigan; and Jaelin
Sanford, Louisville, Kentucky, all bring a unique set of skills to
this year’s squad.
The wings for this season feature some very good shooters
and some very explosive scorers. Devonte Campbell, Maple,
Ontario, Canada; Justin Davis, West Plains; Lane Duncan,
Licking; Shondell Jackson, Warren, Ohio; and Chase Vassell,
Pickering, Ontario, Canada, will compete for minutes at that
position.
In addition to Barnaba and Martin-Garcia, the forwards
feature some very good size and skill. Jacob Miller, Detroit,
Michigan; Mike Parks, East Cleveland, Ohio; and Jacob Smith,
Winona, can all score in the post, and they have very good
perimeter skills, which will be a tremendous advantage in the
Grizzlies ball screen offense.

The
Booster Club’s Purpose
• Contributions to the fund are tax deductible to the full extent
of the United States tax code.
The administration of Missouri State University-West Plains and
the Grizzly Booster Club Executive Board of Directors extend
to Grizzly fans an exciting opportunity to leave a lasting legacy
by establishing permanent, named scholarship endowments.
The concept is simple, yet highly attractive to both donors
and the Grizzly Athletics program. Donors may contribute or
pledge amounts of $10,000 or more to fully endow a named
scholarship fund. The amount may be paid in one sum or in
minimum annual installments of $1,000, not to exceed 10 years.
The Grizzly Booster Club has 42 funds, some of which are fully
endowed and others that are maturing. The principal of these
funds has a current market value of more than $1.3 million.
Here are a few additional facts:
• A portion of the annual earnings is used for scholarship
purposes. This portion represents a percentage of the adjusted
market value of the endowed fund based on a 36-month moving
average. Any remaining earnings, less a small percentage to
cover investment costs, are placed in the scholarship endowment
fund to ensure capital growth. Contributions to the endowment
fund are never spent for any purpose. The market value of the
scholarship fund, subject to market performance, will continue
to grow in perpetuity.
• The endowed scholarship may be fully funded from the
beginning or funded in installments over a period of time, up
to 10 years, as determined by the donor. Annual scholarship
awards begin when the fund reaches its full endowment level.
• Donors can name the endowment (e.g., John and Jane Doe
Grizzly Scholarship Fund) and assist in developing the criteria
for selecting the student-athlete scholarship recipient(s).
The Grizzly athletic teams and their chief supporters, the Grizzly
Booster Club, have enjoyed increasing success each year. The
winning traditions, strong community encouragement and
enthusiastic fan support are envied by many other programs
throughout the nation. We are honored to offer this special
opportunity, which will perpetuate the names and support of
Grizzly fans throughout the entire future of the program.
• Contributions to endowments are deposited with the
Missouri State University Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit
corporation, and managed by professional financial advisors
along with all other endowments from the three campuses of the
Missouri State University System.

Grizzly Booster Club
The
Booster Club’s HISTORY
The Grizzly Booster Club was formed in 1993 to provide
community encouragement and support for the Missouri
State University-West Plains Grizzly athletic teams. Funds
raised provide educational scholarships and other vital
program needs. Without the work, commitment and support
of the Grizzly Booster Club, Grizzly Athletics would not be
possible.
During a Missouri State University-West Plains Development
Board meeting in 1992, a discussion took place about ways of
moving the university forward. One very well-known citizen,
Mr. Bob Neathery, spoke up without hesitation and said, “I think
we ought to have a basketball team.” Later, in 1993, the university
began offering varsity athletics programs in women’s volleyball
and men’s basketball. Both sports are affiliated with the National
Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) at the Division
One level. The squads compete in Region 16 of the NJCAA
and play full schedules with teams throughout the midwestern
United States.
Grizzly sporting events are held in the West Plains Civic Center.
The 2,800-seat arena provides an ideal setting to showcase the
university and its athletics programs. Grizzly Athletics has
elevated the spirit of the entire campus and gives the public
The Grizzly Track Award
The Grizzly Track Award is presented
periodically to a member of the Grizzly
Booster Club who has shown exceptional
enthusiasm for and extraordinary support
of Grizzly Athletics over an extended
period of time. Actions by the recipient
must have enabled Grizzly Athletics to take
a giant step forward. Honorees are selected
by the Executive Board of Directors of the
Grizzly Booster Club.

within the seven-county service area opportunities to interact
with their university. Attendance at athletic events is usually
quite good, and, on occasion, fans must be turned away for lack
of sufficient seating.
The university places considerable emphasis on the scholastic
success of its student-athletes. The coaches serve as academic
advisors and teach courses, as well. They continually monitor
the academic progress of each student-athlete. Tutoring and
other academic support resources, including the “Promoting
Academic Success With Students Athletes” (PAWS) program,
are available as necessary.
Both Grizzly teams have had impressive winning records. Both
teams have had individual team members achieve all-region and
all-American honors. Both teams appear regularly in the NJCAA
Division I poll of the top 20 teams in the nation. Some of the
finest accomplishments in the history of the athletics program
came in 1996 when Keri Elrod was named NJCAA Academic
All-American and again in 1998 when DeAun Gray was named
NJCAA Academic All-American and Chuck Campbell was
named NJCAA Distinguished Academic All-American. They
were the first of many student athletes who would achieve
similar honors in later years.

Head Coach
Yancey Walker
Yancey Walker is
in his eighth season
as
head
basketball
coach
at
Missouri
State University-West
Plains. In the past
seven
seasons,
the
Grizzlies have won 146
games, 31 of which
came against NJCAA
Region 16 opponents.
He’s mentored three
All-Americans and 18
All-Region 16 performers, four Academic All-Region
performers and two NJCAA Academic Athletes of
Distinction. In his first five seasons as a head coach,
Walker had the highest winning percentage of any coach
in the history of the program during the same time frame.
Season seven featured a team full of newcomers.
The Grizzlies, who finished the year 21-11, tied for third
overall in Region 16 and was one of two teams with
the second best record in the Region 16 regular season
standings. In addition, the team defeated two NJCAA
Top 10 teams and one team that received Top 25 votes at
the time of the contest. Jameel Moore, Craig Eubanks,
and Terrel Martin-Garcia, received first-team All-Region
16 honors, and Dazhonetae Bennett was named to the
second team.
Although injuries hampered his sixth season at the
helm, the Grizzlies still posted an 18-13 record, finishing
third in the Region 16 regular season. In addition, 101
NCAA Division I coaches from a 69 different institutions
watched the 2013-14 squad in action. Devaugntah
Williams, Justin Jamison and Arroyo Edwards earned
All-Region 16 honors for their contributions.
The 2012-13 campaign started with only one
returning sophomore on the roster and a schedule that
included four preseason top 25 teams in the first 15 games
and five games against teams that participated in the
national tournament at the end of the year. The Grizzlies
won their last eight regular season games, finishing with
a 21-10 record, and their second Region 16 regular season
championship in three seasons. Devaugntah Williams
and Keaton Jackson earned All-Region 16 honors.
Many regarded Coach Walker’s fourth year as a
“rebuilding” year, since the Grizzlies had to replace 80
points per game from the previous season. Even so, the
Grizzlies continued to make their mark on the record
books. They set a record for the fewest points allowed in
a season (1,807), were ranked as high as No. 8 nationally
in team defensive average, and finished the year ranked
ninth nationally. They defeated the second ranked team
in the nation and two teams that participated in the
28
national tournament, as well as finished second in the
Region 16 regular season standings. Nathane Simniok
and Gage Wooten were named to the All-Region 16 team,
and Wooten received honorable mention All-American
honors.
Walker’s third year was the best year in program
history. The Grizzlies made their first trip to the
national tournament after winning their third Region 16
championship and their first District 4 championship.
The Grizzlies set a school record for most wins in the
regular season (28) and most wins overall (31), and they
posted a perfect 8-0 record in Region 16 regular season
play. In addition, they received first ever No. 1 national
ranking and a mention by former Congresswoman Jo Ann
Emerson in the March 29, 2011, Congressional Record.
Lonnie Hayes, Quinton Pippen, Travis Wilkins and
Teddy Simniok were named to the 2011 All-Region 16
Team, with Hayes earning unanimous Player of the Year
Honors. Hayes also garnered first team All-American
honors, and Pippen received an honorable mention AllAmerican nod. Walker was named Region 16 Coach of
the Year and District 4 Coach of the Year, and he, along
with Westley Hinton and Pippen, were highlighted in
an article in the Basketball Times, a national basketball
publication.
Walker’s second year as head coach began with no
returning players and only one true sophomore. Even
with two key injuries later in the season, the Grizzlies
were able finish with a 20-10 record, remain No. 1 in the
nation in team defensive average for a substantial part of
the season, and defeat Northeastern Oklahoma A&M for
the first time in four years, Cloud County Community
College on the road in overtime, and Mineral Area
College at Park Hills, Mo., in double overtime with only
seven healthy players. Gage Wooten was named to the
All-Region 16 Team.
Walker joined the Grizzlies in April 2008 as the
team’s assistant coach, but was promoted to his first
collegiate head-coaching job three months later when the
Grizzlies’ head coach position became vacant. Although
the task of coaching a team recruited by someone else
challenged him, he was able to find a style of play that
gave the Grizzlies their best chance to win. At the end of
the year, Anthony Allison and Devon Peltier earned allregion honors.
Walker began his coaching career at Thomas More
Prep (TMP)/Marian High School in Hays, Kan., while
he was still a junior in college. He served as an assistant
football, women’s basketball, assistant baseball and
assistant softball coach his first year and was promoted
to head women’s basketball coach his second season.
During his time at TMP, he was a part of a district
champion, bi-district champion and regional runner-

up football team, a third place women’s basketball team
and a state tournament baseball team. During that same
time he also served as the Rooks County Legion Baseball
coach, leading the team to its first winning season in 13
years and a third place finish in the regional tournament.
Walker’s first collegiate coaching job was at Colby
Community College in Colby, Kan., as an assistant
coach. During his tenure, the Trojans set several school
records for overall and conference wins. His second
year, the Trojans won the Jayhawk West regular season
championship and saw all of the players go on to fouryear institutions, five of which were NCAA Division I.
One player even made it to the NBA. That team also had
three all-conference players and one all-American.
Walker next served as a graduate assistant coach
Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Ark., where
he coached his second all-American and his second
conference championship team, and helped guide
Henderson to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II
South Region. While at Henderson, Walker coached four
more all-conference players while earning his Master of
Science in Sports Administration.
His next stop was at Arkansas Tech University in
Russellville where he served as assistant coach. Even
though he started in late June, he was still able to recruit
two starters for the 2005-2006 season and four of the
top eight players. He helped lead Arkansas Tech to its
best start in 24 years. Walker then moved to Hawai’i
Pacific University in Honolulu to become the assistant
head basketball coach/assistant director of athletics.
He coached and recruited two more all-conference
performers.
The son of a coach, Walker has been around
basketball his entire life and learned to walk on his high
school’s basketball court. As a player at Scott Community
High School in Scott City, Kan., Walker earned allconference honors as a junior and preseason all-state
honors as a senior. Illness hampered his final season, and
after accepting a lesser role as a scorer and a bigger role
as a rebounder, he was able to help his team reach the
Kansas Class 4A State Tournament for the first time in
18 years.
Walker signed with Southwestern College in
Winfield, Kan., after high school then transferred to
Colby Community College where he played for NAIA
Hall of Fame Coach Bill Morse. He then transferred to
Fort Hays State University to earn his bachelor’s degree.
While in college, Walker was a local news correspondent
for KBSH TV 7 in Hays, Kan., and KLBY TV 4 in Colby,
Kan.
Walker is an accomplished horseman and competed
in a variety of horse shows as a young man.

Q&A with Coach Walker
What kind of player makes a successful Grizzly?
A person who puts the team before himself will make a successful Grizzly.
That isn’t relegated to one certain type of person. It is anyone who is
willing to sacrifice for his teammates. We have had young men from near
and far who have had diverse backgrounds when it comes to basketball
and life. The one consistent trait is that our most successful teams have
been willing to understand that the individuals succeed when the team
succeeds.
What advantages does
Missouri State-West Plains provide to players?
We have a vast number of advantages. I would say that our assistant
coaches are absolutely second to no one in the country. We have strong
academics and we have strong support from both the University and
the West Plains community. Another advantage we have is that when
we travel, we get to stay in nice hotels on the road and we travel in nice
busses. Finally, we have the gear we need for safety and security and to
look like one unit on the floor.
How would you describe
this year’s Grizzly Basketball team?
This team is very diverse, very skilled and very competitive. This team
is the complete Missouri State University-West Plains team. We have
talented young men who understand the entirety of being a studentathlete. As an example, we had nine 4.0 GPAs for the 2015 summer
term. That shows the dedication and work ethic this team possesses.
Who do you expect to be your
toughest competition this season?
We want to compete with ourselves every day. We want to make our
teammates better and improve as individuals by using that method. As
far as the teams we play, we cannot overlook any of them, but we have
several teams on the schedule that went to the national tournament
last season, and we play in the toughest region in the country, in my
opinion.
What are your goals for this year’s team?
My goal for this team is for the players to reach their potential.
What will it take to win
the Region 16 Championship this year?
We have to master all of the little things. Everyone is good in
Region 16; the little things will separate those who are successful
and those who aren’t. That will be crucial if we are to continue to
make winning our habit.
What will the Grizzlies need to do to reach
and win the national tournament and win
the national championship this season?
Again, the little things will tell all. On top of that, we will have to
be exceptional at being us. We must play to our strengths and be
in control of games from start to finish. This team has shown the
ability to focus on the task at hand. What we need to nurture is
the ability to have that all of the time. In addition, chemistry is
always a huge piece of the national tournament/championship
puzzle.
What kind of impact does community
support have on the Grizzly Basketball
program?
I brag on the community and the Grizzly Booster Club regularly.
The new look of the booster room is amazing and should
continue to help increase our support from that organization.
West Plains does an outstanding job of taking care of our
institution. Our community supports all organizations with
pride by giving money when they can and time when it is
necessary. It makes an incredible impact on our program. We
also have had outstanding crowds in the Joe Paul Evans Arena,
and that has helped us tremendously in the past. There is no
feeling quite like a venue that is so loud that each person has to
shout to hear the person next to him.

asst. Coach
chad van riessen
Chad Van Riessen is in his
fifth season as an assistant coach
at Missouri State UniversityWest Plains. To date, he has
recruited eight All-Region 16
performers, one of which earned
that honor twice.
“Coach Van Riessen has a
great eye for spotting talent. He
is a tremendous in developing
relationships with recruits and
finding the type of young man who will be successful in
our program. In a lot of cases, assistant coaches don’t get
the credit they deserve. Coach Van Riessen deserves a lot of
credit, and I hope to see him at the next level or running his
own program very soon because he’s earned it,” said Grizzly
Basketball Head Coach Yancey Walker.
In Van Riessen’s fourth season, the Grizzlies finished the
year with a 21-11 record overall. In addition, the team tied for
third overall in Region 16 and for the second best record in
the Region 16 regular season standings. The Grizzlies defeated
two NJCAA Top 10 teams and one team that received Top 25
votes at the time of the contest. Jameel Moore, Craig Eubanks,
and Terrel Martin-Garcia, received first-team All-Region 16
honors, and Dazhonetae Bennett was named to the second
team.
In Van Riessen’s third season, the Grizzlies posted an 1813 record, finishing third in the Region 16 regular season. In
addition, 101 NCAA Division I coaches from a 69 different
institutions watched the 2013-14 squad in action. Three of
Van Riessen’s recruits, Devaugntah Williams, Justin Jamison
and Arroyo Edwards, earned All-Region 16 honors for their
contributions.
In his second season, the Grizzlies posted a 21-10 record
after returning only one sophomore and facing a schedule
featuring four preseason top 25 teams in the first 15 games
and five games against teams that participated in the national
tournament at the end of the season. Even with a young team,
the Grizzlies won their last eight regular season games and
their second Region 16 regular season championship in three
seasons. Devaugntah Williams and Keaton Jackson earned
All-Region XVI honors.
Quick Facts
In his first year on the Grizzly bench, Van Riessen helped
guide the team to a 21-10 record and a second place finish in
the Region 16 regular season. The Grizzlies set a record for the
fewest points allowed in a season (1,807), were ranked as high

NJCAA All-American
All-Region, All-American Selection Process
According to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), selections to the All-Region teams are made by each
region’s coaches at the end of the season. Coaches cast their votes for the 10 best players in their respective regions. From this list, the
region director submits five nominees in rank order to the NJCAA Division Men’s Basketball Chairman. A committee then reviews the
nominees at the NJCAA Annual Meeting and a total of 50 student athletes are selected to the All-American team – 10 each to the first,
second and third teams and 20 as honorable mentions.
The NJCAA also honors student athletes who excel in the classroom through Athletes of Distinction Awards. Students are given
individual academic honors if they have completed at least three semesters of college work, maintained superior grade point averages and
participated in at least one season at the varsity level. Until 2010-2011, students were recognized as Distinguished Academic All-Americans
for maintaining a 3.8 or above cumulative grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale, or Academic All-Americans for maintaining a 3.6 to
3.8 cumulative GPA. NJCAA officials changed the categories to the following: Pinnacle Award for Academic Achievement for a perfect
4.0 GPA; Award for Superior Academic Achievement for 3.80 to 3.99 GPAs; and Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement for 3.60
to 3.79 GPAs.
