Carnegie Science Center - Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh
DELIGHTING, EDUCATING, AND INSPIRING
THROUGH INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCES IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Carnegie Science Center is a premier destination for science
exploration and discovery for people of all ages. Recognized as a
leader in promoting literacy in science, technology, engineering, and
math (STEM), the Science Center is dedicated to nurturing the next
generation of innovators and leaders who will rise to meet
tomorrow’s workforce needs.
The Science Center is a trusted voice on contemporary issues in
science. Innovative programming engages diverse audiences and
stimulates young people to consider careers in STEM and to
understand how science applies to everyday life.
Every year, science and technology achievements across the region
are recognized at the Carnegie Science Awards. Since 1997,
the Science Center’s award ceremony has celebrated the
accomplishments of more than 500 individuals and
organizations.
Located on Pittsburgh’s North Shore near the
confluence of the city’s three rivers, the Science
Center has had global impact. Its internationally
recognized traveling exhibits and planetarium
shows have reached millions of people in
53 countries.
Because of its exceptional community service, the
Science Center was honored in 2003 with the
coveted National Museum Service Medal from the
Institute of Museum and Library Services and
was a finalist for the award in 2014.

EXPLORE, IMAGINE, LAUGH, AND LEARN
No place inspires curiosity and connects science and technology to everyday life like
Carnegie Science Center. Hundreds of hands-on exhibits invite interactions that delight
as they instruct.
n
Highmark SportsWorks®showcases 30 exhibits infusing fun into the science of
sports, the human body, nutrition, and fitness.
n
Fab Lab Carnegie Science Center engages visitors in digital design and fabrication
using high-tech software and hardware. A mobile Fab Lab takes the same experiences
and the same equipment to schools.
n
The world’s largest permanent robotics exhibition, roboworld™, explores how robots
think, sense, and act.
n
SpacePlace features a two-story, walk-in replica of the International Space Station
and a 1⁄3-scale model of the Hubble Space Telescope.
n
H2Oh!: Why Our Rivers Matter features a large water table, live local animals,
displays about fluid dynamics, and a view of Pittsburgh’s three rivers.
n
Rangos Omnimax®Theater, one of only 50 IMAX dome theaters in North America, is
the biggest screen in the Pittsburgh region.
n
Buhl Planetarium is a high-definition, immersive experience that allows visitors to
explore deep space without ever leaving their seats.
n
Three demonstration theaters serve up dynamic science, from nutrition to molten
metal to explosive physics.
n
An authentic Cold War-era submarine, USS Requin, offers a hands-on history lesson,
giving visitors an inside look at the lives of submariners.
n
Other galleries include Exploration Station Jr. for early learners and the
Miniature Railroad & Village®.
EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
Carnegie Science Center has parlayed its strengths—informal science education and the
power to convene industry, educators, and students— into the Chevron Center for STEM
Education and Career Development, to help prepare the next-generation workforce. In
2012, the Chevron STEM Center was honored with the “Leading Edge Business Practice”
award by the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC). In 2015, the Science
Center was again honored with the ASTC “Leading Edge Business Practice” award for its
Carnegie STEM Excellence Pathway.
n
Carnegie Science Center’s STEMisphere, a searchable online directory of STEM
resources in western Pennsylvania for children Pre-K through Grade 12, features
hundreds of resources. Find it at www.STEMisphere.org.
n
More than 1,100 students participate each year in the Pittsburgh Regional Science
& Engineering Fair, one of the nation’s oldest and largest. Young scientists are
selected to advance to the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF).
The Science Center was instrumental in bringing ISEF to Pittsburgh in 2012, 2015,
and 2018.
n
Programs like SciTech Days, Chemfest, Engineer the Future, and Future City connect
students to scientists and STEM professionals.
n
Carnegie STEM Girls initiatives engage, educate, and inspire girls to pursue STEM
careers and help girls envision themselves as scientists.
n
Science on the Road offers more than 50 traveling programs and reaches more than
163,000 children each year in a five-state region.
n
The Carnegie STEM Excellence Pathway initiative is built on the belief that school
systems, individual schools, departments, or individual teachers can improve their
STEM education practices through a positive, collaborative approach. The Pathway
includes a self-assessment instrument through which participating schools and
school districts first evaluate themselves. Launched in 2014, the Pathway is already
reaching 2.66 million students in more than 4,200 schools across the nation.
