S
o here we are; my first column as President of the chapter. I would
first of all, like to thank John Oglesby for his service as President
over the last five years. He has been a wise leader and has seen the
chapter through a number of challenges. John left his role as President
in January, with the Chapter successful and healthy. I hope that I can
do the same thing moving forward.
For those of you who don’t know me, I have been involved with
the BMW car club and the Boston Chapter since 1999. Why did I join?
Well, I had wanted an M5 very badly since I was 14 years old. It occurred to me that the best place to buy one might be from a BMW CCA
member, so I joined. I was looking for something pampered and well
cared for, and as I looked at the classified ads in my new Roundel,
I noticed that this club, MY club, hosted “Driving Schools” on race
tracks. My initial thought was, “Come on now, really? Someone is
going to let ME drive my M5 on a race track for a relatively small fee?
Really?” I don’t think I really believed it until I signed up as a student.
Of course, it only took one event for me to become completely
hooked. Since that first introduction, my passion has always been for
Driving Events. My first, a Track School at Lime Rock in my E34 M5
was a revelation. I realized that driving, like any tactile human skill
has nuances that are at first misinterpreted as easy, but can only be
mastered with dedication and practice. So began, my path from student to instructor. Quite simply, I wanted to be a better driver and here
in this club was the opportunity to learn through Autocross, Advanced
Driving Skills, Street Survival and of course in our track schools.
Although I love the track events, you will also see me at other chapter events. The club has many other activities and we like to think
that there is something for everyone. In addition to driver education,
there are technical events, social events, fun rallies, and opportunities
to show off your car at Concours and Show & Shine competitions.
Choose your flavor and take part. In the months ahead, I look forward
to serving you, so please say hello at the next event you attend.
I’ve touched on how I got involved and what events our Chapter
offers, but I haven’t talked about our challenges. The demographics of
the chapter are changing, so our biggest challenge is to develop programs and events that continue to attract and retain members. Since
not everyone is a “track addict” like me, we’ve expanded our fun
rallies and social activities. In 2012, we hope to expand the “cars and
coffee” meet ups that we initiated in 2011. So, watch for these and
other upcoming events in the Bimmer and on the Chapter website!
P.S. I need to come up with a snappy sign off message for this
column. John always ended with “Stay on Track.” Admittedly, I’m
struggling to come up with something. “Live long and prosper” and
“May the force be with you” have been done, so if you have a suggestion send me an email. Until next time, (snappy sign off to appear
here) this is Simon signing off! ♦

Member: Brian Gibbs, member since April 2010

the past 12 months:

Motorsport (March 2012)
About Brian: After an unforeseen accident during
college resulted in his VW Gti being declared a total
loss, Brian was left with a painful memory and a check
for $1,800. Knowing that he wanted to replace the car
with a RWD, he opted for an E21 320i in fair condition
with the intent of restoring it slowly … and so began his
BMW story. Over the next three years, Brian brought the
car back to life, and created many motoring memories
and met many BMW enthusiasts on his journey. After
college, he traded the BMW life for a SAAB, only to boomerang back with an E46 330Ci in early 2001. Since then,
Brian has stayed true and moved up to an E60 550i 6MT
before purchasing a pristine 1999 Dakar Yellow E36 M3,
after joining the Boston Chapter in 2010.
My first interaction with Brian was as a matchmaker
of sorts last winter. I had recently purchased some Style
44 wheels from autocross guru Mark Chambers who indicated that he was selling a set of D-Force tires/wheels
that he had bought from Boston Chapter member Andrew Duane. Knowing the history of the set-up and the
owners personally and hearing that Brian was looking
for the exact same setup (from Bimmerforums.com) – I
left a voicemail to vouch for both Mark and Andrew and
to provide a brief history of the tires/wheels. After talking to Brian, I realized that he was looking to sell some
wheels locally and put him in touch with another member to help him make that sale. During the conversation
with Brian, we talked about his aspirations and future
plans to attend our Driving Schools and agreed to find
each other at a future event. Having had the experience
of talking on the phone, I was excited to meet Brian in
person and see the wheels fitted on his Dakar Yellow
M3. Since that initial interaction, Brian has become a
slide partner (i.e. we’ve been sliding down the slippery

slope together with respect to modifying our E36 M3s).
Shortly after my wife bought me an E36 M3 for father’s
day, Brian provided me with an Excel spreadsheet with
items that he purchased, replaced, or planned to buy for
his car. Later, after driving his M3, I quickly mounted
the ladder to the slide and jumped in feet first.
To illustrate how slippery the slope has been for both
of us, Brian and I relentlessly scour the BMW forums,
Craigslist and Ebay to find parts to adapt to our cars.
We’ve relied on each other to pick up parts, and Brian
has sold me some of his old parts and even purchased
parts on my behalf from some of his parts resources! Our
passion hasn’t ended there. We’ve also become track
buddies, meeting before, after and at events. At NHMS,
I’ll save a garage spot for him, we’ll have lunch and dinner together and we’ll coordinate our event calendars
too. Did I mention that we’re both accountants? In any
case, from all of this, you might think that Brian is a
single guy with lots of time on his hands, but in fact he’s
quite the opposite. He is a CFO for a national plumbing
supply company, has a wife and two kids, an established passion for both Sailboat racing and wrenching
on his cars, and a honey-do list that keeps growing. And
yet he still has time to attend Boston Chapter events!
In his own words, “I joined the BMW CCA for the
driving schools, because I wanted to become a better
driver. I fully expected to come to a few events, and
I thought I’d work on my car between classroom segments and my time on the track. I never anticipated the
social aspect of the events. It’s remarkable how friendly
everyone is during the day and between sessions and
it’s completely unlike the sailing competitions I attend
where the chance to meet and mingle with others is
non-existent until after the event is over. ”Since his first
driving school in late 2010, Brian has made many great
friends and enjoyed the camaraderie that continues long
after events are over. For 2012, he’s hoping to get to as
many Driving Schools as possible, attend more social
events and start his Autocross career. Brian – we hope
to see you soon! ♦

12 | Boston Bimmer • Winter 2012
The Boston Chapter began offering this special program in 2006. The program was developed by the BMW CCA
Foundation in cooperation with Tire Rack to provide driving
skills development programs specifically targeting younger
drivers. More than 70 Street Survival schools are held each
year all across the United States. The primary emphasis of the
Tire Rack Street Survival® is a “hands-on” driving experience
in real-world situations. Students use their own cars to learn
through a series of low speed exercises on wet and dry asphalt.
For more information about the program and additional pictures go to: www.StreetSurvival.org.
Students learn by doing
The events sponsored by the Boston Chapter are held in the
Spring and Fall at a huge parking lot at the New Hampshire
Motor Speedway in Loudon, NH (www.nhms.com). Class
sizes are small for each event to insure that all participants
get personal attention. Historically about 40% of students are
female and most students are of high school age.
The day begins with an hour long vehicle dynamics class.
After the classroom work, students are divided into four
groups that run their assigned exercises simultaneously.
This approach minimizes waiting in lines and maximizes
the amount of practice time on each exercise. Students have
in-car instruction and group meetings throughout the day.
Since the primary emphasis of the school is a “hands-on” driv-
ing experience in real-world situations, the club has
students use their own car to teach them the handling
limits of their vehicle and how not to exceed them.
Students learned how to look far enough ahead to
anticipate unwise actions of other drivers. As the students master the application of physics to drive their
cars, they also make wiser driving actions themselves.
The class also helps participants understand why they
should always wear their seat belts and why their passengers need to be wearing seat belts too.
Exercises included in the program
Driving exercises included in the Boston Chapter program include:
1. Braking in a straight line: maximum with full ABS,
and threshold braking without activating ABS.
2. Braking while turning exercises that cover the effect of lateral weight transfer on braking capacity
3. Lane change exercises including obstacle avoidance, one-lane left or right, and two-lanes.
4. Wet skid pad skid control when going clockwise
and counterclockwise.
5. The program culminates with a low speed autocross on both wet and dry surfaces and combines
elements of the exercises practiced throughout
the day. Parents are encouraged to ride with their
teenage driver to evaluate their newly acquired
defensive driving skills.
As a result of taking the class, participants and their
parents report that they become more observant of traffic situations after completing the program. In fact we
hear from class graduates all the time who tell us how
the course has helped them react positively in what

could have been a life threatening driving situation.
Parents are welcome

Parents usually accompany their teenager for this event
and many parents were on hand for the 2011 Fall class,
as seen in the pictures. The students, instructors and
parents share a group lunch on site and then are invited to go for rides on the autocross course with their
teenager at the end of the day. A valuable “Parent Companion” handbook, containing information for parents
of young drivers is also provided which has many useful tips and suggestions.
Experienced instructors
The students are led through the exercises by a group
of very experienced instructors who all have extensive
skid pad experience in a variety of cars including cars
with front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and all wheel
drive. The schools typically have a 4:1 student to instructor ratio to ensure that each student gets lots of
personal instruction.

Wear and tear not a concern
If you are considering registering your son or daughter
for the class in 2012, you don’t need to be concerned
about wear and tear on your vehicle. The exercises in the
class cause only minimal wear on tires; because most of
the exercises are run on wet asphalt, and speeds never
exceed 40 mph. Safety and having fun while learning
are a top priority. Events sell out quickly so be sure to
register your teenage driver early.
Our upcoming events
This year’s Tire Rack Street Survival schools will
be held on May 19th and September 15th. As in the
past, both events will be held at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway, 1122 Route 106 North
Loudon, NH 03307. To register, log on to the national
Street Survival website at www.StreetSurvival.org and
follow the instructions for online registration. The cost
of the program for 2012 is $75. If you have additional
questions about the program, feel free to contact Luka
Serdar at [email protected]. ♦

chapter event updates : simulation racing
Simulated driving, real friends ...
A new Boston Chapter Social event takes flight!
– Story & photos by Charles W. Bleakney IV ( AKA Chad)
W
hat happens when you deprive driving enthusiasts the thrill of autocross, Fun rallies and HPDS
events through the winter; combined with a year
that was a bit lacking for winter events? The restless get
creative, and a new event is born … an electronic racing event. The perfect storm arose when Mark Dudek
entrusted his Playstation 3, two steering wheel/pedal
set-ups and Gran Turismo 5 to Eric Kaul, while he was
out of town. Eric’s wife, Anjali, hatched a plan, suggesting that Eric should “Have a few friends over to
play.” Admittedly, she was only expecting 5 or 6 people,
but when the day arrived, the small get together had
blossomed to 25+ attendees, resulting in 7 full driving
stations; four PS3 on GT5, two Xbox 360 on Forza 4, and
a PC running a racing simulator. What a treat!
Food, fun and a chance to connect
The iRacing party took place at Eric’s home, where
he was gracious (or crazy) enough to invite everyone
to come in, have some food and drink, and reconnect
with club members, autocross buddies, and the like.
The camaraderie was classic BMW CCA, each person
contributing food, drink, equipment and whatever they
could to the event. As a guest, it seemed to come together without a hitch. We feasted on chicken wings,
brats, polish blood sausages with all the accoutrements,
cheesecake squares, éclairs and cookies, along with a
16 | Boston Bimmer • Winter 2012
great selection of beers, coffee, and non-alcoholic beverages, to which everyone contributed their favorites.
During the event, we were serenaded by the sun and
unseasonably nice weather that allowed us to congregate, and grill on the deck. Thank you Krystian Macek
for the Polish fare, Bill Harding for the brats and potato
rolls, Chris Hill for the desserts, and John Chiu for the
hot coffee and donuts that I needed desperately.
Every set-up imaginable
The driving set-ups were diverse, and spread throughout the living room, kitchen and dining room. Eric
rearranged his home for us, making it easy to wander
around to watch other people drive, test each driving
set-up, or just hang out and talk. We could have talked
about anything, but the only talk I heard was about cars,
racing, and tuning -- big surprise! The living room was
to be the primary set-up, featuring Mark’s PS3, Gran
Turismo 5 (GT5), and two driving sets, played split
screen on Eric’s 60” TV. In the kitchen, Tom Rathje’s PC
was set up with iRacing, and Logitech G27 wheel; while
in the dining room mounted to the table, there was
another PS3 with GT5, and an Xbox 360 with Forza 4.
Of course, no event can go on completely without a
hitch, and when Eric was testing his 42” TV the night
before, it failed. In no time flat, Mark Dudek and Krystian Macek volunteered to bring their 32” TVs, which
bers who already own game
systems are seriously considering adding an racing simulator
set-up to their parts list.
iRacing is fan favorite
turned out to be perfect. It allowed for the PS3 and Xbox
to be used simultaneously. This odd set up was pieced
together with parts and pieces from different people.
Rick Springob supplied the PS3 and one of the steering
wheels, another wheel/pedals/seat combo was supplied by Krystian Macek (His was a way cool custom
built driving set-up). An Xbox, Forza 4, and Fanatec
wheel were supplied by Christian Iantosca, and the last
wheel/pedal combo was from yours truly.
A chance to compare experiences
The diversity of game systems, different wheel setups and seating positions allowed everyone the very
unique experience of trying different combinations in
quick succession, easily comparing their experiences.
I am certain that there are a few people in attendance
that will end up purchasing a game system based on
their iRacing experience at the event, and some mem-
The iRacing set-up seemed to
be the belle of the ball, and was
certainly the one that received
the most attention. Drivers
spoke of its realistic driving
characteristics, great graphics,
and the ability to practice driving on their favorite regional
race tracks, such as Watkins
Glen. There was a constant group of 6+ huddled around
the 24” computer screen, and I saw 9 or more at times.
The addition of a wheel/pedal set-up to any game allows the user to forgo the awkwardness of learning to
drive a car with buttons via each system’s proprietary
controller. This allows you to get in the seat and drive,
just like your real car, feeling out the differences of each
system, or individual game’s unique programming. I
own an Xbox 360/Forza 4 with a wheel/pedal set, and
after playing the Playstation/GT5, I found the Xbox/
Forza 4 to control more realistically. However, it could
be that I am used to the Xbox system, and do not have a
feel for the nuances of the Sony Playstation 3 programming. I will also admit that I was enjoying the company
and didn’t devote a lot of time to actual driving.
It was a unique club experience
The club experience went beyond the party itself; when
parking concerns came about, myself and two other
Worcester area members offered to carpool to Quincy.
I offered to drive, picking up Rick Springob and Dylan
Reid in Grafton. I had met both these guys at events,
having spoken with each a few times, however I feel
I got to know them much more personally, while carpooling into Boston. Alas, the event must end. I was
impressed by the speed and efficiency with which all

the members cleaned up, and helped break down the
party, returning the house to a livable space. We were
the last to leave; making sure everything was as clean
as possible, attempting to ensure that Anjali invited us
back, to take over her home for future events. After all,
she had sent the dogs away to daycare for the day and
took care of their daughter, Arie, all so the boys could
play uninhibited … what a good sport!
It takes a village
It really takes the whole village to throw a successful
club event, and I’ve tried to recognize all the people
who helped make the event possible, so if I forgot anyone, please forgive me. This event quickly outgrew its
18 | Boston Bimmer • Winter 2012
original small group format, which suggests that the
Chapter needs to find a location to make this a regularly scheduled event. With greater planning and a larger
space, future iterations are sure to blow our minds,
showcasing the great camaraderie, and good nature of
the BMW CCA members. If you’re interested, in helping
to put together the next session of Simulation Racing let
us know. The Boston Chapter is open to developing
new events to keep a competitive edge, maintain active
membership, while attracting new members. So open
up and offer your ideas to the chapter. Your brain child
could be the next great event that provides even more
opportunities for members with common interests to
meet other like-minded enthusiasts to form friendships
and share their bond with cars and the BMW brand.
Special thanks to the Kaul family
Once again, a very special thanks to the Kaul family,
Anjali, Eric, and Arie. Thank you for trusting your
home to a bunch of cone-slaying barbarians for the
day, I fondly look forward to future events with all the
members, new and old. If you are interested in helping
organize or host a Simulation Racing event, drop a note
to Eric at [email protected]. ♦

Questionable cleanliness
I
‘ve written about car cleanliness in the past and it
occurs to me that this is becoming somewhat of a
theme. I’m sure that somebody much smarter than I
could enlighten me on what this says about my small
brain. Until then I have asked myself some questions
and funny enough – I started to find some answers. So
Here Goes …
Q
#1:
A
#1:
uestion
What does it say about our schedules
and frantic lives that the car wash provides 120 seconds
of relief and escape?
nswer
Whether you prefer the Full Contact
Brush treatment, Touch-Less or Hand-Wash; I’m not
here to judge you. I know there are purists that will be
simply aghast that I have even mentioned a car wash
but stay with me. Once you have entered the tunnel
and become encased in your multi -color foam tomb,
there is no cell phone reception and the radio stations
get very fuzzy. Give in to it – don’t fight it – turn it all
off and get lost in the Whoosh Whoosh of white noise.
Q uestion #2: Are you having a hard day at the
office causing your stress level to red line by midmorning?
A
#2:
nswer
Simple – Run through the ROBO JET
AQUAMASTER 5000 at lunch time and wash all your
cares down the drain. Granted if your stress level
remains high on a continued basis you may end up
washing the paint right off your ride with all those
dreaded harsh chemicals. (There we go judging again).
Look at it this way – if those are the harshest chemicals
that you use to relieve stress then you could do worse.
Besides anything that is Blue, Pink or Yellow and smells
like bubble gum couldn’t possibly be ALL bad.
Q uestion #3: What if I can’t bring myself to use
the mechanical wash, am I destined to be a hyped up
stress ball?
Answer #3: There is hope for you. I can respect all of
you that want to perform the “Hand Wash” in the comfort and safety of your own driveway. I also expect that
this delivers some of the same stress relieving benefits.
It is a solitary task performed with purpose, immediate
results and a sense of accomplishment. The time spent
on this process can certainly distract from the looming
deadline at work, the concerns regarding your investment portfolio or the ex-con that your daughter just
started dating.
Q
#4:
uestion
If normal people get their best ideas
in the shower … well then would it be a total surprise
that “car folks” get the same result while in the car
wash tunnel ?
Answer #4: It seems reasonable.
After all, I got the
inspiration for this incredibly insightful and deep piece
of literary work right in the middle of the undercarriage
“Bottom Blaster” spray.
With the speed of life and the demands on our time
we all find little ways to cope. Sometimes even the simplest distraction is enough to take the edge off. All you
need to remember is to take “Deep Cleansing” breaths
and then … wash … rinse … repeat. ♦

Exciting 50th anniversary
For the Rolex 24-Hours of Daytona!

his year marked the 50 th anniversary of the 24 Hours at Daytona and there
was unprecedented interest in the historic endurance race. Turner Motorsport
campaigned 2 GS cars in the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Challenge
200 and 2 cars in class GT at the 24 Hours. I followed the team throughout the
Rolex 24 campaign to get a better idea for what goes into preparing for and
running a race of this caliber.

20 | Boston Bimmer • Winter 2012
All teams have an opportunity to shake down their cars at Daytona
the first week of January, commonly known as the Roar Before
the Rolex 24. Most of the preparation that goes in at the Roar and
the weeks preceding the actual race is focused on making sure the
cars’ components will last the entire 24 hours. Turner Motorsport
played with brake pad compounds, replaced fittings and hoses,
tweaked driver comforts, adjusted pedals to drivers’ liking, optimized cooling systems and air ducts inside the cabin. The team
also replaced all lexan and installed windshield tear-offs, as spares
are very important in a race of that length. Spare nose clips were
built and vinyled to match. Electrical systems were looked over
very carefully, as they can make or break the race, especially at
night. (Electrical failures could even be catastrophic.) Set-ups
for wet and dry conditions, as well as for a cool or hot track, were
finalized. The team made sure the right number of tires and spare
wheels with tire pressure monitoring sensors were budgeted for
the race. The cars were fine-tuned to factor in all driver feedback
from the Roar.
One of the most important planning objectives was to make
sure the cars had all needed spare parts and that the team was
ready to deal with whatever the race could throw at it. Accord-
ing to Turner Motorsport, “Extra
time and effort is put into making
sure there are NO weaknesses in
the cars. It’s the weak-link that
will bite you. Everything must be
checked and checked again.” And
they mean everything: hoses, fittings, clips, nuts, bolts, wires, etc.
To support all these logistics, the
team sent two 18-wheelers loaded with two cars in each on the
2-day trip from Turner’s shop in
Amesbury, MA to Daytona. Each
tractor/trailer also carried all the
spares, parts, equipment, and
consumables needed by the cars.
The Rolex 24 Race Drivers
The Rolex 24 race featured a Who’s Who collection of
drivers descended from Formula 1 (Juan Pablo Montoya, Giancarlo Fisichella, Olivier Beretta), multiple
Indy 500 winners (Dario Franchitti, Emerson Fittipaldi), Andretti’s grandson Marco Andretti, multiple
past Daytona winners, including 63 year-old Hurley
Haywood, most Porsche, BMW, Ferrari, and Maserati
factory drivers, celebrity-driers like Patrick Dempsey
and even AC/DC lead vocalist Brian Johnson (probably singing Let Me Put My Love into You every time
he pulled off a pass!) Turner Motorsport’s regulars Bill
Auberlen, Billy Johnson, Paul Dalla Lana, Michael Mar-
sal and Boris Said were joined by BMW factory aces
Dirk Mueller, Joerg Mueller, and Dirk Werner.
The Daytona Prototype (DP) Race
Amazingly, the top 3 DP cars were separated by only
2 seconds after 23 hours of racing. Unbelievably, there
was intentional side-by-side contact between eventual
winner AJ Allmendinger and Allan McNish in their
Ford Rileys at 180 mph on the front straight. Allmendinger got a better exit onto the front straight and took
the low line to make a pass. The two cars pulled even
and banged sides twice at top speed. AJ made the pass
stick, which eventually decided the race in his team’s

a year’s worth of driving excitement and stories to share. Here’s a
partial list of the logistics that went
into supporting Turner Motorsport’s 2 cars, 8 drivers, and a crew
of 32 people over the 24-hour race:
• Fuel stops needed every 50
minutes
• 20 Gallon fuel tank capacity
• 600 gallons for the weekend
per car
• 24 sets of tires per car for the
weekend
• 400 lug nuts per car
• 25 bottles of nitrogen for
tires and air guns
• 2-3 sets of brake pads for
the 24-hour race (plus 1 or 2
more for practice and qualifying per car)
• 2 Water Bottles per driver
per stint
• Multiple windshield tearoffs per car
• 250 bottled waters
• 150 cans of soda
• 50 bottles of Gatorade
• 100 granola bars
• 100 cups of coffee
• 150 Red Bulls
• 60 scrambled eggs
• 125 ham sandwiches
• 60 candy bars
• 30 Advil packs
• 4 dozen donuts
• 2 RVs where Drivers can rest
and eat

favor. When asked
about AJ’s tactics
after his driving
stint, a visibly angered McNish said
“It was a fair fight
up to that point.”
Scott Pruett’s BMW
Riley, which was
running very close
behind, lost most
of its gears in the
next few laps and
AJ never gave
up the lead in a
fiercely contested
class (the margin
of victory was only
5 seconds.) Ford
Riley owned the
podium with Michael Shank Racing
taking its first ever
Rolex 24 victory.

the other hand, was
owned by the Porsche GT3s. The fastest GT3 lap time was four-tenths
faster than the Ferrari 458’s best lap and over a second faster than any
other car’s best lap time. The #94 Turner car hit the tire wall 3 hours
into the race and lost an engine. “I’m beyond disbelief,” team owner
Will Turner said shortly after the incident. The #93 Turner car had a
very respectable race working through some technical issues and finished the race in P16 out of 45 entries in class.
Exciting Times for Race Fans
Turner Motorsport provided a great live stream from 2 cameras right in
their garage, allowing the thousands of fans who joined in to feel right
in the middle of the action. Between the firsthand reports from a good
friend of mine on the ground at Daytona, SpeedTV’s broadcast, Speed
TV’s live online stream with choice of 4 in-car cameras, Rolex 24 live
timing updates, Facebook, Twitter, and racing enthusiast forums, there
has never been a more exciting way to watch a race. If you can handle
the information overload, that is! I felt I needed 24 hours of sleep to
recover from the Rolex 24! ♦

Time for Tire Talk
W
hile I like to focus on wheels and safety in
most of my articles, there’s been a lot of “tire
talk” around our shop since Sean, my son-inlaw, became the Tires and Wheel Guide for about.com
(tires.about.com). A recent conversation was about the
new Michelin Defender which is guaranteed for 90,000
miles. According to www.moderntiredealer.com, the
Defender has a lot of good qualities, but when I questioned if the steel belts are guaranteed, I was surprised
to learn they are not. This led me to think that perhaps
it’s time for my column to discuss some of the variables
in choosing a tire.
Tire tread
One of the first variables is the life of tire tread. Once
upon a time, tires were bias-ply and the length of the
tread was the length of the life of the tire. Now that
tires are radial, tire tread is only one of the important
variables for the life of your tire. The intent of the
law that requires all vehicles 10,000 pounds or less to
have a Tire Pressure Monitoring System was to eliminate preventable accidents and reduce the incidence
of unpreventable accidents. Under-inflated tires are a
major factor in accidents that can be prevented and having your tires properly inflated can reduce the damage
and injuries caused by unpreventable accidents. Also,
if your tires are under-inflated this impacts the tread
wear on your tires. So, a better tread (with a 90,000 mile
guarantee) would indicate a superior product.
Steel Belts
One variable in radials that didn’t exist in the old biasplies is the steel belts. Steel belts are inside the tire
where you can’t see them. If the steel belts wear faster
than the tread, then the life of the tire hasn’t really been
improved that much. When Michelin was questioned
about their new Defender tire, they responded that they
had switched vendors to improve the life of their steel
belts and are confident that the belts would last longer
than the tread. However, currently there is no tread
wear guarantee in the industry that also covers steel
belts. In my opinion, if the steel belts wear out faster
than the 90,000 mile guarantee then the true guarantee
is only as good as the steel belts.
“all season” is a non-descriptive adjective. There are
no standards in America for “all season” tires. In theory, “all season tires” are good for all four seasons.
However, there are no industry standards for how well
these tires can help you stop a car on black ice. If you
never drive on icy roads (in New England?), “all season” tires may be all you need. “All weather” tires,
on the other hand, are tires that usually meet the requirements for the severe service emblem required in
Canada and much of Europe. “All weather” indicates
that the tires are able to stop on black ice with a higher
degree of safety.
Rolling resistance
The fourth variable in choosing a tire is the rolling resistance of your tire. Rolling resistance is a term used
to describe the energy lost to friction as the tire is compressed and rebounds. This variable is critical because
the lower the rolling resistance, the better the gas mileage you get. When shopping for tires, it’s important
to know the exact rolling resistance when comparing
two tires. A good low rolling resistance tire (like my
favorite Nokians) should save you quite a bit per year
on gas mileage.
These four variables are important in making the decision of what tire(s) to buy. You also need to consider
your need for high performance, the correct speed rating and load rating. Sometimes, the best idea is to talk
to an expert who isn’t committed to selling what’s in
the company’s inventory, but is committed to selling
you what meets your driving needs. ♦

All season vs. all weather
A third variable in choosing your tires is if you have
one or two sets of tires for your car. Your tire needs
are determined by where you live and your driving
habits, but you also need to understand the difference
between “all season” and “all weather” tires. The term

A new fix for the E36 rear shock-absorber mounting
H
– story and photos by Vic Lucariello
ello, Bimmerphiles! In the November, 2008 New Jersey Phile’s
Forum, I wrote about failures of the E36 unibody chassis in the
area of the upper rear shock-absorber mounting. See Photo #1
at right, originally from that column; the original column is available
on the NJ Chapter Website if you want to read it. The column described
what to look for regarding this relatively uncommon failure, and
suggested that BMW reinforcement plate # 51-71-8-413-359 (about
$20 list each) and 2 new locknuts 07-11-9-904-295 (about $0.50 list
each) be installed on E30s, E36s and E46s where inspection of the
rear shock mounting area reveals no damage as of yet.
After that column ran, I received an email from Ben
Liaw over at Rogue Engineering (Upper Saddle River,
NJ; rogueengineering.com). Ben brought to my attention that Rogue offers an alternative, at about $35 per
pair, including new locknuts, to the BMW reinforcement plate. He actually sent a couple for evaluation.
Thanks, Ben!
Photos #2 and #3 offer a comparison of the Rogue
(left) and BMW (right) reinforcement plates. The Rogue
piece is about 2 millimeters (mm) thicker than the BMW
part, and the Rogue has 8 mm studs attached. The advantage of the attached, downward-pointing studs
is that, once the Rogues are installed, future shockabsorber replacements can be done entirely from the
wheel well, with no need to deal with the luggage-compartment insulation and speakers.
The installation
Vic Junior and I installed the Rogue pieces in his 1995
325is (E36) with about 200,000 miles showing. After
removing Jr.’s rear shocks and mounts, the first step
was to press out the studs from the stock shock mounts.
This is easily effected with a couple whacks from a hammer, as shown in Photo #4. Note that the shock mounts
should ALWAYS be replaced when replacing shocks.
Photo #5 depicts the Rogue plate test-fitted to the shock
Above: Photo #1 shows the problem
mount prior to installation. We had to rework slightly
the shock mount holes (vacated by the studs) with a rattail file in order to get the Rogue plate to fit. Note also
that Photo #5 shows a NEW gasket (33-52-6-772-864) on
the shock mount.
The rest of the installation continued to be straightforward, and resulted in Photos #6 and #7. Note that it
is easier to tighten the Rogue-stud nuts if you have the
shock dangling, so you can angle the shock out of the
way a bit for better socket clearance. So make your last
step installing the lower shock-mount bolt.
There you have it, Bimmerphiles. The next time I inspect the rear-shock-mounting areas on Joanne’s E36, I
intend to install a couple of Ben’s reinforcement plates.
Your input needed for future columns
As I’ve mentioned in past articles, if you have failed
your state emissions inspection, I would very much
like to receive a copy of the inspection report. You can
either mail a photocopy of your report (preferred), or
simply email the test data. (Include your name, too, if
you want to be famous and be mentioned in Philes’
Forum!) Please include both the test results for each
pollutant along with your exact model (e.g.: 328i, not
just 3-Series) and year, transmission type, and mileage.
If you know the mileage was when your oxygen sensors

I have two Bridgestone Blizzak
LM-22 Tires (255/40/17) with 1011/32nds of an inch (nearly new as
I used them for less than 500 miles
before buying 2 more in a narrower
width) They are in perfect condition.
They are Performance Winter tires
that can be used year round tires
due to the rounded edges, stiffer
sidewall & higher speed rating. I
know them to be great year round
tires as I currently use them as such
on my daily driver car. The first $150
takes them! Email me at Eric_Kaul@

Simpson Diamondback helmet,
size 7-1/2 (60 cm), Snell 2005, 03/06
manufacture date. I bought this
in 2006, used it for three seasons
(2006-2008), & it has sat idle since
(2009-2011). Most clubs allow the
Snell 2005 rating through the end of
2015, so this helmet still may have
4 years of useful life (2012,2013,
2014, 2015). I always wore this with
a balaclava so the inside is clean
& stink free! Shown with optional
Iridium metallic visor installed (the
original clear visor (never used) is
included), Simpson helmet cover,
HANS mounts installed, Chatterbox (wired) setup with dual
earpieces & microphone installed
inside, & HANS branded helmet
bag. Over $900 of stuff, asking $395
obo. Contact Todd at tmevery-for-
