Terra
Alta
72
Rowlesburg
Take Rt. 7 East and wind your
way up Cadell Mountain into Terra 50
50
Alta (meaning “high ground”) atop
72
the Appalachian Mountains. Continue
on Route 7/Co. Route 53, also known as the “Aurora Pike,”
back down the mountain to Aurora–approximately 40
minutes from Kingwood.
50
Aurora
Turn left onto Co. US-50 East/George Washington Hwy
for two minutes and visit Cathedral State Park, an
ancient hemlock forest of majestic proportions! Visit
cloisters of trees that reach up to 90 feet in height and
21 feet in circumference.
Drop into Melanie’s on George Washington Hwy for lunch, portions
are large and everything is homemade–including the bread.
Before leaving Aurora, visit the Old General Store on Rt. 50, a full-sized
replica of an 1850s General Store, located on Route 50.
Pick up Route 50 West and drive to Rowlesburg–but leave
time to stop by Cool Springs, an anything-you-can-thinkof-store with hand-dipped ice cream and foot-long hot
dogs. You’ll find a large walking park accented with vintage
farm equipment and old train cars.
Your next stop is Rowlesburg and a truly unique
exhibit worth visiting is The Greatest Generation World War II Museum in
the Szilagyi Center. You’ll be surprised by the authentic war time sense
with soldiers and artifacts from both Allies and Axis.
Continue on Rt. 72 back to Kingwood and visit the historic Preston
County Inn on Main Street for dinner at Maximes’ (Tuesday-Saturday).
Jean-Manuel & Deborah Guillot will make you feel right at home, ask
them to save you a rocking chair on the front porch.
