Continue on Route 7/Co. Route 53, also known as the “Aurora Pike,” back down the mountain to Aurora–approximately 40 minutes from Kingwood. 50 Aurora Turn left onto Co. US-50 East/George Washington Hwy for two minutes and visit Cathedral State Park, an ancient hemlock forest of majestic proportions! Visit cloisters of trees that reach up to 90 feet in height and 21 feet in circumference. Drop into Melanie’s on George Washington Hwy for lunch, portions are large and everything is homemade–including the bread. Before leaving Aurora, visit the Old General Store on Rt. 50, a full-sized replica of an 1850s General Store, located on Route 50. Pick up Route 50 West and drive to Rowlesburg–but leave time to stop by Cool Springs, an anything-you-can-thinkof-store with hand-dipped ice cream and foot-long hot dogs. You’ll find a large walking park accented with vintage farm equipment and old train cars. Your next stop is Rowlesburg and a truly unique exhibit worth visiting is The Greatest Generation World War II Museum in the Szilagyi Center. You’ll be surprised by the authentic war time sense with soldiers and artifacts from both Allies and Axis. Continue on Rt. 72 back to Kingwood and visit the historic Preston County Inn on Main Street for dinner at Maximes’ (Tuesday-Saturday).
