This checklist created by IHCD's New England Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA) Center is based on the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. It
updates the original ADA Checklist for Readily Achievable Barrier Removal
which was based on the 1991 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. The
original checklist was issued in 1992 and revised in 1995.
The ADA requires public accommodations (businesses and non-profit
organizations) to provide goods and services to people with disabilities on an
equal basis with the rest of the public. Businesses and non-profit
organizations that serve the public are to remove architectural barriers when
it is "readily achievable" to do so. Please see the website for a word fillable

Green Communities
The Institute for Human Centered Design
and New Ecology Inc. have been awarded
a new project by the Enterprise Green
Communities: The two organizations will
partner for the Development of Universal
Design Specifications for Single Family and Multifamily Buildings.
Enterprise Green Communities provides funds and expertise to enable
developers to build and rehabilitate homes that are healthier, more energy
efficient and better for the environment -- without compromising
affordability. Green Communities also assists state and local governments to
ensure their housing and economic development policies are smart and
sustainable. Green Communities homes are built according to the Green
Communities Criteria, the first national framework for healthy, efficient,
environmentally smart affordable homes.

The Inclusive Design Research Group is collaborating with the University of
Exeter on the project "Co-production of Physical Products and Value Cocreation - Scalability in the Wild" (funded by the UK's Engineering and
Physical Sciences Research Council EP/I006885/I).
The research aims to take a significant step towards collective user creativity
in designing physical products, concurrently generating added value and
superior user experience. It explores co-creation digital technologies and
new business models through implementing and evaluating user-based
design, production and web service platforms. The project is led by Dr L Hao
at the University of Exeter.

Closed Captioning Now Available for Live Television Onboard
Continental Airlines

LiveTV is proud to announce that, for
the first time in the history of inflight
entertainment, closed captioning is now
available for live television content
onboard an aircraft. This system enhancement is a major step forward in
delivering the excitement of inflight entertainment to those passengers with
hearing disabilities and continues to drive towards LiveTV's goal of a fully
realized "At Home in the Air" experience for each of its end-users.
The Closed Captioning enhancement will initially be offered to passengers on
all LTV3-equipped Boeing 737NG aircraft operated by Continental Airlines, a
subsidiary of United Continental Holdings, thereby putting each customer in
control of the feature while interacting with the 100+ channels of DIRECTVprovided satellite television available onboard. Continental will be the first
airline in the world to provide this feature to its passengers.

DCR Winter Universal Access Program Activities
This month begins the Department of
Conservation and Recreation's (DCR) Accessible
Winter Activities calendar. DCR's Universal
Access Program will sponsor a wide variety of
adaptive cold-weather recreation opportunities
at locations across the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts. Designed for people with
disabilities and their families and friends, the
programs are free. Pre-registration is required.
Activities offered through March include
accessible cross-country skiing, snowshoeing,
kick sledding, snowmobiling. Staff assistance and free use of accessible
equipment, such as sit skis and kick sleds, will be available.
DCR's Universal Access Program is one of the most innovative accessible state
park programs in the nation. It enables people with disabilities to participate
in a wide variety of activities, making recreation programs in Massachusetts
more inclusive. DCR invites participants to come out and enjoy the various
adaptive winter programs, and is also looking for volunteers to assist with
them. Interested volunteers should call Heidi Marie-Peterson at 413-5773840. Two trainings are scheduled: January 7 at Wendell State Forest and
January 22 at the Weston Ski Track.

Santa Clara Brain Injury Conference
The Santa Clara Valley Brain Injury Conference: Building on the Legacy of
Coma to Community will be held February 23-25, 2012 at the historic Dolce
Hayes Mansion in San José, California. This second annual conference follows
the sold-out 2011 reintroduction of the Coma to Community Conference
hosted by the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center from 1977 through 1995.
The conference program planned for 2012 includes two half-day preconference workshops and a full day pre-conference training for individuals
pursuing ACBIS brain injury certification. The main conference will be two
days of multidisciplinary state of the art educational sessions, Partering with
the Brain Injury Association of California,Veterans Affairs, the California
Department of Rehabilitation, and community-based service providers. They
have expanded their format and anticipate an audience of 750 rehabilitation
professionals representing a variety of disciplines.

Abilities Expo Boston in 2013
The Abilities Expo Boston is to be held
September 20-22, 2013 at the Boston
Convention and Exhibition Center (BCEC).
The Abilities Expo is a series of consumer
exhibitions held around the country each year
for members of the disability community. The
Abilities Expo is a free event for consumers and their families, designed to
provide them with the latest information and resources available to people
with disabilities.

5th International Multi-Conference on Engineering and
Technological Innovation Call for Papers
The 5th International Multi-Conference on Engineering and Technological
Innovation: IMETI 2012 Organizing Committee invites you to submit a
paper/abstract to be presented in the conference in Orlando, Florida, USA,
from July 17th - July 20th, 2012
The deadline of paper/abstract submission and invited session proposals is
January 10th, 2012. The deadlines for notification to authors and camera
ready upload can be found at the conference web site. A best paper will be
selected for each session, and an award certificate will be delivered in the
award ceremony to the respective author. The best 20% of the papers
presented at the conference will also be published in the Journal of
Systemics, Cybernetics, and Informatics (All papers to be presented at the
