Manager’s Message
Dear Members,
Thank you for the overwhelming positive response to our Member meeting on December 6, 2010. With over 100
members in attendance, we were able to share our community news and entertain many questions from our
membership. Kevin Fitzpatrick from Wentworth Management addressed sidewalk concerns as well as street sign
repair and road failures. There are still no plans to address the deer population. In addition we have added speed
bumps on Glencairn and will monitor speeding more closely with a radar gun. All community common area issues
may be addressed to Kevin via e-mail or phone at any time. He will review the repairs mentioned and you can track
the progress in his weekly updates in our Tuesday blasts. Other club issues were mentioned such as shade at the
outdoor pool which will be addressed this year prior to pool season along with more umbrellas and tables. A second
request was made for more spin bikes at fitness and Bonnie has ordered them. A brief discussion regarding
collections reminded all members the importance of paying in a timely fashion to eliminate late fees, phone calls and
finance charges. There were many accolades given to Chef John and the culinary team along with a request to have
the Joint Venture remain in charge of club operations. Great news, at this time there will be no changes in either of
these areas. I am pleased to announce your club dues and golf dues will remain the same for 2011. There will not
be an increase in the service charge or trail fees either. Overall, it was a positive evening with great feedback. At
any time if I may be of assistance please give me a call, email or stop by. I wish you and your family a very happy
and safe New Year.

Toll Brothers Breaks Ground for a
New Model Home in Hampton Hall
With the recent bump in sales activity at Hampton Hall, leaving
only 17 home sites remaining, Toll Brothers has broken ground
on a Waverly model. The Waverly, which will be situated on the
16th fairway and encompass sprawling golf views, will be
available for Quick Delivery this summer, 2011.
Sales will be handled by Carson Realty, one of the area’s most
respected real estate sales companies. Toll Brothers has
partnered with Carson Realty in order to extend its outreach to
the brokerage community and provide maximum flexibility for
both buyers and brokers. “We have chosen Carson Realty to
represent all of our sales efforts in the Hilton Head market,
whether at Hampton Hall, Hampton Pointe, or within our “On
Your Lot” program, where we will build one of our award-winning
home designs in another Hilton Head area neighborhood,” said
Walt Schwartz, Toll Brothers’ South Carolina Division President.

EVENTS & CELEBRATIONS
―The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.‖ - Oprah Winfrey In 2010, the
Clubhouse hosted more celebrations and parties than ever for our Members and guests: wedding ceremonies and
receptions, anniversaries, surprise birthdays, baby showers and numerous private dinners with family and
guests. We had a few quinceañeras and sweet sixteen’s, several retirement parties and even a few parties of
friends who just felt like getting together for festivities! I have loved helping to plan even in the smallest of ways
for these special events, and have gotten some great ideas from you all!
We’ve got such a beautiful clubhouse, and so many different spaces that are perfect for everything from casual to
elegant affairs. Our new outdoor pergola has been a beautiful addition for wedding ceremonies and even outdoor
cookouts, and the fire pit is always a popular spot for gatherings. Or use the Lanai (my favorite!) for a luncheon
or cocktail party. It’s all here for you to enjoy!
Oprah’s got it right (doesn’t she usually?), and there are so many great excuses to get together with your loved
ones through the years. For your next event, let’s put our heads together and help you put on a unique and
memorable celebration, no matter how grand or how intimate.
To share some fun ideas or just to start looking at the calendar, please feel free to contact me at
[email protected] or give me a call at 843-815-9336. Happy Planning!
MEMBER EVENTS
I must say, you guys are a ton of fun! When I look back on the
past year and all of the holidays and events we’ve enjoyed with
you, so many well exceeded our expectations, primarily because
of your immense support. Thanksgiving, the New Years Eve
Gala and other popular holiday events were bigger than ever.
Some of the most popular were events that Members had
suggested, including Holiday Meet the ―Kids‖ Night, Comedy
Night, and the neighborhood Scavenger Hunt. Next year we’re
researching a Murder Mystery Night and other themed parties.
Keep the ideas coming! I’m all ears and love new and creative
things to have fun and enjoying each other’s company…
celebrating the way you like to!
As you look at your calendar and check out activities at the
Club, continue to use our best communication tool: the Club
website. Go to www.hamptonhallclubsc.com for full event
calendars, details on upcoming events, dining schedules, and
check out tons of photos from past events. You can also receive
weekly news bits from around the community and clubhouse by
being our ―fan‖ on Facebook.com (Hampton Hall Club).

Pomegranates
Fresh pomegranates are one of a chef’s favorite fruits to
work with in the winter. This fruit is in season from late
September until early February. They are not only delicious, but are one of the most nutritional fruits you can
eat. High in Vitamin C and Potassium, a good source of
fiber and low in calories, Pomegranate juice is high in
antioxidants that are credited with helping the prevention
of cancer and heart disease. Whether you crush fresh
pomegranate seeds (yes, you can eat the seeds) or drink
the juice, you are doing your body a favor.
Pomegranate seeds are great sprinkled over salads, fruit
desserts, ice cream, waffles, pancakes, and slaw. The
juice is good for marinades, glazes, salad dressings and
margaritas.
At this time of the year, treat yourself to the endless uses
of fresh pomegranates. Here is one to enjoy.
Pomegranate Glazed Chicken Wings
3 pounds chicken wings
1/2 teaspoon salad oil
2 teaspoons minced garlic
3 tablespoons minced fresh jalapeno chilies
1 cup pomegranate juice
1 cup cranberry juice
1/3 cup sugar
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
3 tablespoons pomegranate seeds
Salt
Rinse wings, drain and cut apart at the joints. Place in a single
layer in 10 X 15 inch nonstick pan. Bake in a 400 degree oven
until brown and crisp, about 1 hour, turning pieces
occasionally.
In a medium nonstick frying pan over high heat, stir oil, garlic,
and chilies for 2-3 minutes. Add pomegranate juice, cranberry
juice, sugar, and vinegar. Stir until sugar dissolves, bring to
boil. Boil until reduced to 2/3 cup: about 15 minutes. Drain
and discard fat from chicken wings. Pour pomegranate sauce
over wings and turn pieces. Bake until sauce thickens and
sticks to wings about 12 minutes, turning often.

Golf Course Superintendent

It is the time of year that our dormant greens will be painted
and approaches will be a dormant brown color. We do not
overseed greens. Overseeding is the planting of winter
grass overtop of warm season grass to give color, because
greens transition from cold weather to warmer weather
much better when not overseeded. Another reason
greens are not overseeded is so golf members do not lose
a month of great course condition due to growing in of
overseeded grass. Approaches were not overseeded this
year so Zoysia grass encroachment could be removed.
Also the decision was made not to overseed to see how
dormant approaches play. Of course we did overseed our
fairways and the grass has come in well and looks good.
In the months of January, February and March the golf
course maintenance crew will continue to work on projects.
We plan to have all the green side bunkers drainage
upgraded on the front nine and plan to do bunkers on back
nine next year. Upgrading bunker drainage will make
bunker sand more consistent. All Zoysia grass
encroachment into approaches will be removed around
greens 9, 10, 11 and 13. In addition, a tree aeration
program will start after the first of the year on the holes with
heavy soils. Tree aeration will consist of auguring 3” holes
on 3 foot spacing around the drip line area of tree. Live
Oak trees suffer from lack of air in heavy wet soils and
auguring helps to remedy the situation. When time is
available, we will continue to raise drains and sprinkler
heads. Remember, late January is the time to take soil
tests in your yard, garden or flower bed. Usually
Fertilization has not been applied in winter months and a
true soil fertility can be measured. Then a fertilization plan
can be created for the future.
In the month of March, warm season grass will begin to
green up and cool season grass will tiller and reach peak
performance. Trees will also begin to leaf out adding more
color to golf course, and by late March, golfers will
experience some of the best playing conditions of the year.

Ladies’ Golf Society
As we look forward to 2011, we see a lot of great golf
activities on the horizon. The first quarter of this year
will include a special event each month.
January 15 – Annual breakfast and shambles
February 18 – 20 - First ever Toll Brother’s Golf
Challenge with Brier Creek, North Carolina
March 25 – 27 – Hampton Hall’s first annual Ryder
Cup
January - Annual Breakfast and Shambles
At our annual breakfast we’ll be updating the
membership on some of the Board’s early initiatives.
Dennis Cavner and George Ragland will be updating
everyone on our progress toward reworking the
Hole-in-One program, Mark Larson will be distributing
our 2011 handbook, and we’ll have several other
important updates for the membership.
February - Toll Brothers Challenge
As I mentioned in an earlier communication, we will be
hosting the first of a home and away challenge with
the Brier Creek Golf Club in North Carolina. Mike
Balducci is our tournament chairman and he’ll be
working out the final details with his counterparts at
Brier Creek. We’ll have more information on this in the
mid-January timeframe.
March - Hampton Hall’s First Annual Ryder Cup
As of the first of the year, there will be, at most, 6
weekends left before we close off the points
accumulation and pick our Ryder Cup participants. For
those of you ‘on the bubble’, take advantage of as
many weekends as you can. You won’t want to be left
out of this event. Also, we’re still looking for a
tournament chairman for this event to work with me
on finalizing the details of what we hope will be the
first of a great new tradition. If you’re interested in
chairing this event, please contact Rod Carlson or me.
Member-at-Large Activities
George Ragland and Don Rolston, our Board
members-at-large, will be offering periodic new
member orientations. For our new members, this is a
great way to get plugged into what the HHMGS offers
and activities and events we sponsor. As always, if
anyone (HHMGS member or otherwise) would like to
discuss how we could improve the Society and its
impact on the Hampton Hall golfing experience, please
reach out to me or any of the other Board members.
We’d appreciate hearing from you.
See you on the links!
Happy 2011 from your HHLGS Board! Hope you all had
a wonderful Christmas and got everything you wanted.
Now, let’s see if we can get our focus back on our golf
games! The past year seems to have passed in a blink
and a blur, but there were several milestones. We had
a record number of hole in ones in 2010. Our
membership grew generously. We enjoyed quite a few
events and finished out the year with a very enjoyable
Holiday Luncheon. Looking forward to a lot more
milestones in the upcoming year. First, we will have a
general meeting February 22. Next, our HHLGS
Interleague play will begin in February, followed by our
March Madness event. We also have plans to put
together a HHLGS and HHMGS combined event early in
the year. Details on all of these events will be lined out
in the weekly newsletter. Please take the time to get
involved in your golf society in the upcoming year and
let’s make this year even better!

Principles of the Rules of Golf
By: Dick Titus, MGS Golf Handicap Chairman
Knowledge of the Rules of Golf is critical to understanding the options available to us in our golf
games. The rules of golf are slightly different for stroke and match play events, and it is important to
know the differences. This month starts a new season of club match play events, so we will examine
a couple of rules and rule situations that may arise in these club matches. The scenarios examined
illustrate that an understanding of the rules is essential to understanding your options in sticky
situations.
SCENARIO 1: During a match play event, Gino was unhappy about the putt he missed on the last
green to tie the hole. Upon arriving at the teeing ground, Gino still has the honor. Still unhappy and
not paying attention, he tees his ball and makes his shot at the white tee location. These tees are at
least three club-lengths behind the advantage tee markers being played in the match.
Michael points out to Gino that his ball was played from outside the established teeing ground.
What should the outcome of Gino’s actions be?
Answer: According to Rule 11-4, in a match play event, there is no penalty, but Michael (at his
discretion) may require Gino to cancel his shot and re-tee from within the appropriate teeing ground.
However, had it been a stroke play competition Gino would have incurred a two stroke penalty for
playing outside of the teeing ground and must then play a ball from within the teeing ground to avoid
disqualification for having played from the wrong place. (The depth of the teeing ground is defined
as two club lengths from the front edge of the tee markers.)
SCENARIO 2: During a match play event, John hits a 30-foot, left to right breaking putt to within two
feet of the hole. Russ, his opponent, says, "That's a good one."
John, believing that Russ has conceded the putt, picks up his ball.
Russ asks why his opponent has picked up his ball and then says, "I didn't concede the putt."
What is the ruling in this case?
Answer: In the case of this misunderstanding, Rule 1-4 would come into play. It states that any
point in dispute must be resolved in accordance with equity.
It would appear the fair thing to do in this case would be for John to replace his ball without penalty.
The match would then continue to complete the hole.
