Early voting started Feb. 27 and runs through March 15 according to election lawyer James P. Nally. There are 51 voting sites in Chicago, and city residents who are registered to vote, are able to vote in the location of their choice. Suburban voters have 43 locations to choose from. Chicago polling places can be found on the Chicago Board of Elections website. The Cook County Clerk’s website lists all the suburban locations. In the vast majority of cases, the primary is the real election. Many of the Republican candidates in the city are just token candidates. In Cook County the number of Republican judicial candidates running can be counted on the hands of Three Finger Mordecai Brown. This is a very unusual election. When March 20th comes around, who knows if there will be any excitement of a good kind in the Presidential race. Far and away the most exciting part of the election this year is the judicial races. There are as may judicial races as I can ever remember and there are no shortage of contested races. There are lots of high quality candidates, often butting heads. Lots of quality Jewish candidates and more than a few unqualified candidates of all races, creeds, religions and backgrounds. Before I get started with the candidate rundown, it is important for everyone to know the criteria we using in making our endorsements. Just being Jewish is not enough, not even close to enough. If a Jewish candidate is pitted against a non-Jewish candidate, and all things are equal in terms of their ability to do the job, there won’t necessarily be an endorsement. There are some non-Jews who have done an absolutely superb job of taking care of both Jewish concerns and the community. They will most certainly be endorsed, and yes, even against Jewish opposition. If a Jewish candidate is well-qualified for the office, but does not take care of real Jewish concerns for his or her constituents, he or she will not be endorsed. If there is no real benefit to the Jewish community in a race, it may not warrant our attention. There are political experts in regular newspapers and other media who can perform that function, though too often they do so very poorly. (More inside) This is a Jewish newspaper and I focus on Jewish concerns with full regard to society as a whole. The bottom line is that Jewish Chicago looks for candidates of quality for the community as a whole who will take care of Jewish concerns as they arise. The primary Jewish concerns are on a national level and concern Israel. Liberal, Conservative, Left Wing, Right Wing, Progressive—Jewish Chicago is not a fan of any of these on their own. Practical solutions to real-life problems is the best way to go. The only “ism” I am into is Judaism. Advertising in Jewish Chicago has nothing to do with who gets endorsed. People who know me understand that. Compare the ads and the endorsements, and it is obvious that many endorsed candidates placed no ads, and there are advertisers who are not endorsed. State Senator Sen. Ira Silverstein bought by far the most expensive ad, the back cover in the 2008 primary issue, was righteously and correctly criticized for dividing the Jewish community. His opponent was strongly endorsed. In the judicial races, I am changing things by greatly expanding coverage and making necessary changes to the way endorsements are made. If you actually appear before a judge, it could change your life a whole lot more than some weak kneed, corrupt alderman or state legislator. Yet most voters are clueless. Of the pitiful number of people who are registered to vote and the even more pitiful number of people that vote. 40% totally skip the bottom of the ballot that contains the judicial choices. This year, why not start at the bottom? It’s the one place you can be sure to find high quality candidates running against some who have no business running. If you think you can find all the ethnic candidates of your preference, you would be shocked how wrong you are going to be and some of the obviously Jewish ones are a real “shonda” who can do no better than make us look worse if G-d forbid they get elected. In the past, I was totally dependent on input from sitting judges and leading lawyers who I call on for endorsements. With the help of more excellent judicial and legal minds than ever, I have a learned a lot about the process and most importantly, inherent prejudices of some organizations and who may have them. This issue there will be a three tier approach to evaluating judicial candidates. First will be the opinions and input of that ever increasing number of highly rated and respected judicial and legal people. Second, will be a summary of the bar association ratings and a look at the individual bar associations and how they go about rating candidates and their prejudices, if any. Last, now that I have better clue, I’ll give you my honest feelings on the candidates in each race. I will say that the judges who have the Ishmaelites, (Ishmael, the father of all Arabs) they asked Him: What is in the Torah? chosen to advertise as well as other candidates in other races, have shown a serious G-d answered: “Thou shalt not steal.” interest in getting the Jewish vote; and that is a fourth factor that you should take into Their response, “keep your Torah”, No Way! account. On the Democratic side, President Barack Obama is running unopposed. On the Republican side, as of this writing, George Romney and Rick Santorum are the front runners with Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul still hanging in there. Barack Obama has been noting better than an extension of the incompetency of the George Bush administration. Those who tell you three years is not enough to stem the incompetency of the Bush years, fail to realize that Obama is more of the same and even worse. This is longest stretch of Presidential incompetency in the history of the nation and may be too much to ever fully overcome. Obama is still campaigning on “change”. Change you can believe in. The two worst things going during the Bush years were #1 The real estate and economic collapse and #2 Not being satisfied with taking out Sadam Hussein, but starting a major and costly war to bring democracy to nations that wants no part of it. If democracy should succeed there, like supposedly in Egypt and other nations involved in the “Arab Spring,” whose true feelings and viewpoints of the majority are horrifying, anti-American and even more Jew-hating than their corrupt and highly bribable leadership. At least the bribable could be manipulated to cool it on many levels. A new Hell may be being created. So what change did President Obama gives us? He keeps Bush’s military leaders whose leadership brought us a no win situation, costly, squandered the surplus acheived unbder the Clinton administration into a massive national deficit over Iraq and Afghanistan. ELECT JUDGE DIANN KAREN MARSALEK PUNCH: #153 on March 20, 2012 Attorney for 21 years with trial experience Circuit Court Judge assigned to Traffic Court DEMVOTE pax’s, the US of A has done much good. His racist and anti-Israel newsletters of the early days should not be ignored. He is persona non grata. Newt Gingrich is totally brilliant and often his own worst enemy. He has clearly demonstrated he can operate brilliantly on the highest levels and screw up beyond belief. If Israel was the only issue, he would get my vote. He has the guts to tell the truth, that there is no such thing as a Palestinian State. It is totally made up and complete manure. He not only strongly stands behind Israel, he strongly believes they should be dictating to the United States of America on how to proceed in the Middle East. He is also totally non electable. He is my second Republican choice. Rick Santorum is a big government conservative. Big government and higher taxes will drive more Americans out of work and into poverty. While government should have no place in Abortions and Contraception it should also fund neither. This is individual choice between man and G-d and though there is a clear right and wrong, the government has no place in the equation. Not Obama forcing religions to go against their core beliefs, and not Santorum opening up a debate that also forces the governments will on people who are entitled to make their own choice, right or wrong and only face G-d with the consequences. G-d gave us Free Will and on this matter, which has so long the divided this country and created too many barriers between opposing groups, the government needs to get the hell out totally and leave things to individuals. It is beyond American and in Obama’s case, antiAmerican to force anyone, let alone religious institutions to do things that go 100% against the Bible. Want abortion, want contraception, fund it yourself, or build a non profit to make your wishes happen. 100% legally. Don’t make religious peoples tax dollars preform acts we abhor. That leaves Mitt Romney. I had the pleasure of running into his father, former Michigan Governor George Romney. United States Congress Second District US Congressman Jessie Jackson Jr. versus former Congresswoman Debbie Halverson. You would think going against Jessie Jr. would be a slam dunk, but over the last few years he has really changed his view and has become pro Israel and something AIPAC has clearly recognized. J u During Debbie Halverson’s one term she was shaky and if pro anything it was J Street which is a collection of self hating, self destructive Israel hating Jews led by the filth known as George Soros. Despite the change in Jessie Jr.’s stance, his alleged attempted bribery, presently under Federal and Congressional Investigation makes him persona non grata. Dem If you live in that district, forget both of them. On the Democratic side, Jewish candidate Ilya Sheyman is a far left-Peace Now-JStreet-loving pro Palestinian totally forget it candidate. Jewish candidate Brad Schnieder is unimpressive and vague on Israel. John Tree, served in the armed forces for three years from 1994 to 1997. He spent a total of four months in Israel as an active duty Captain in the U.S. Air Force with classified access to installations and intelligence in Israel. Republican Joe Walsh is unopposed and a strong supporter of Israel. Ninth District Incumbent Jan Schakowsky versus challenger Simon Ruberio. I’d oppose North Shore political boss Jan Schakowsky in a second if there were a serious pro-Israel challenger. While she has a 100% pro Israel voting record, her moderate support of J Street and taking a 6 figure donation from them puts a bulls eye on her chest. For those saying she is a very nice Jewish lady, they have a point. The last time I interviewed her in her office, she was sweet, totally charming and even brushed the lint off my jacket with one hand. But don’t think she didn’t have a machete in the other hand, in case of the slightest attack. Those who don’t know how ruthless she can be are blind. Her second husband, not Jewish is a convicted felon, yet the daily papers ignore that. Welcome to Chicago. Illinois Senate and House Forbes magazine recently rated the State of Illinois 49th out of 50 financially, shamefully outdone only by California. A short time later, Illinois’ bond rating was downgraded further. The indebtedness to the pension fund should be criminal. But when the guilty parties are the legislators who write the laws, it is not going to happen, No piece of campaign reform legislation has ever been passed into law under Michael Madigan’s watch before he has figured out a way around it. The Chicago Tribune will rant and rave all day and all night about Madigan, but come election time, they always endorse him. I wonder what’s in it for them. There are no state-wide offices up for election during a presidential election year, we are left with The State and House races. State Senate Contested primary races in Jewish areas are few and far between this year, but things will be heating up for the fall. Sen. Heather Steans, who is Jewish and married to a Smith, represents the 7th district along the north lake front. She was a six-figure contributor to Blagojevich which got her appointed to her seat by Blagojevich crony, 48th Ward Committeeman and political boss Carol Ronen. Ronen was a state Senator until Blagojevich appointed her to a high-paying State job that she quit eight weeks later and retired, reaping in an additional $38,000 of pension a year, putting her over the $100,000 mark. A pension that is larger than any salary she ever made as a state senator. When still a senator and a member of the Blagojevich Governor’s Commission on Discrimination and Hate Crimes, a scandal erupted when a black Muslim member of the group, Sister Claudette Muhammad brought group members to witness Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan in action. He repeatedly spewed his hatred of Jews to the assembled. The appalled members of the commission, many of them Jewish, demanded the governor remove Muhammad from the Discrimination and Hate Crimes Commission. Blagojevich refused. As a result, all the Jewish members of the commission resigned with the exception of Carol Ronen, a shameful move in our opinion. Interestingly, State Rep. Lou Lang stepped forward and offered to join the Commission ELECT ELECT ELECT until it was made abundantly clear to him that he was going to lose any and all Jewish support in his heavily-Jewish district. So back to Heather Steans, her qualifications for office: she writes big checks to convicted felons and kowtows to Carol Ronen. Steans is unopposed, but I thought that 7th District voters should know their State Senator’ s qualifications for office and her running crew. No endorsement here. In the 8th District, Senator Ira Silverstein who rivals Ronen in his own special way, having shoved his wife, Ald. Debra Silverstein down our throats in a run-off victory in the 50th Ward. The two, make no mistake, work closely together ̶ a team in every way she being the guts and the one who calls the shots. None of us who have known Ira since he was a kid, ever thought he’d turn into a mean and vicious bully. Then the “fun” began. The celebration echoed throughout the neighborhood. I’m not saying that everything here is directly attributable to the Silversteins, maybe it’s just a coincidence; wink, wink, nudge, nudge. That is something you should decide for yourself. Right after Debra’s victory, one of the highest-rated, finest-run, physically-impeccable nursing homes in the neighborhood was visited by state inspectors who stunningly found violations that require six figures to repair. One of principal owners, well known though out the community for his good heart and charity was coincidentally a large Berny Stone contributor. Many of you are familiar with the Wi-Fi building on McCormick which has created a safe haven and special gathering place for Jewish businesses and organizations. They even have a synagogue and a kosher deli inside. They also have a $70,000 plus lease with the State of Illinois and guess what? Strong efforts were made to break that lease right after Debra’s election. Do you think the fact that one of their owners was a major Stone contributor might have had something to do with it? Debra herself came prancing across the street from her office to Tel Aviv Bakery and to tell them she didn’t like their sign or their awning, and that it was in violation of city ordinance. Debra wanted it fixed right away. She was told business was bad the walk-in business is noticeably down, as are Jewish shoppers on Devon. The bakery owners pleaded for her to give them a little time and they’ll fix everything. On the next morning, city inspectors showed up and wrote the bakery a $250 citation. The owners of the bakery are not politically involved with anyone. That is not the only sign story. It’s Unanimous. They all agree. Debra told them it was against city code and they couldn’t put it up. The Music House is not political, just a normal, good-hearted neighborhood business. Debra waltzed into to New York Kosher at Devon and Francisco. New York Kosher did have Stone signs up. All these signs allegedly violate city sign law in some way rightly ignored for years by Ald. Berny Stone who showed some heart and compassion by leaving such businesses alone. VOTE DEMOCRAT So much in this city is alderman’s choice. If the alderman chooses to enforce an ordinance, it is enforced; other wise no. Stone doesn’t want to talk ON MARCH 20, 2012 politics anymore, but he watched for years and saw that fewer Jews in the neighborhood mean less prosperity for Jewish businesses, and it wouldn’t take a whole lot to close them down. It is not cheap to remove a sign, Avi Fox of Rosenblum’s, Moshe’s former next door neighbor who moved the business to Skokie told me, it takes thousands of dollars to take down a sign. Moshe faces an initial $900 fine if the sign stays up. So, for that matter, do all the rest of the businesses on Devon. Debra has personally visited many, if not all of them. In Moshe’s case he put the “New York Kosher” sign on • Served on the Board of Israel Bonds ebay and found for $500, someone who collects quality, meaningful signs like that for a museum of sorts. • Started Youth Peer Juries He brought in his own crew and on a Friday morning the sign was removed. Jewish Chicago makes no endorsement for the Democratic nomination for State Senate in the Ninth District. It should be noted that former pro-Israel Congressional candidate and Kosher ice cream magnate Jim Oberweiss is running for State Senate as a Republican in the 25th district. He lives in Sugar Grove. There is not much of a Jewish community that way so I don’t know enough about the race to endorse. Senator Dan Kotowski grew up in West Rogers Park where his parents still reside. In the 16th District, Skokie native Rep. Lou Lang has served as a champion for the gambling industry. He wants video poker machines at every convenience store, liquor store, bar, supermarket any place in the state of Illinois with a liquor license. He puts most of his effort into gambling and virtually none to the people of his district. As one of Michael Madigan’s top people, he literally is at his beck-and-call. No one has had a larger hand in Illinois’ financial crises than Mr. Madigan. No thanks Lou, no soup for you either. In the 17th and 18th Districts, none of the candidates have opposition. Only Robyn Gabel is an incumbent and has done well. We’ll flesh it out in the fall. The only other race that I want to point out is in the 57th district where up and coming Republican Jonathan Greenberg will taking on incumbent Democrat Elaine Nekritz, in what shapes to be a real battle in the fall. Greenberg is formerly with AIPAC and is very impressive individual. Cook County In Cook County, the States Attorney, Recorder of Deeds and Clerk of the Circuit Court are up for election. Only one is contested. States Attorney Anita Alvarez is deservedly running unopposed. In upsetting multiple opponents without tying herself to any political organization, she has the freedom to run her office independently. She has some very good people working for her, and she is doing her best to live with painful budget cuts that a failing economy has necessitated. An avid runner, her workload has cut down the length of her jaunts. Unlike virtually any politician I have ever interviewed, you can look her clearly in the eye and know she is being 100 percent straight and on the up-and-up. Her sincerity and lack of political ties are a rare combination. Jewish Chicago endorses Anita Alvarez for States Attorney of Cook County. Karen Yarbrough is running unopposed to replace the retiring Recorder of Deeds Eugene Moore. Her people called to cancel her interview about the time she was supposed to be here. Unlike a number of newspapers, I’ll tell you when I don’t know enough about a race to give you an endorsement. As for this slot, I don’t know. Alderman Ricardo Muñoz is seeking to step up to a bigger stage by running for Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County. Even with the recent budget cuts, there are 1,900 employees in that office, which is a huge load to handle. Muñoz is a very likeable, intelligent individual. He was in rehab a couple of years ago and is doing well. Incumbent Dorothy Brown is seeking her fourth term as Clerk of the Circuit Court. When she first ran, she was hailed by all the papers as an exciting, independent newcomer who, if anything, was overqualified to run the office. She is lawyer, a CPA, has an MBA, and has an advanced knowledge of computers and computer science. Although she is endorsed by the Democratic party, that’s probably because they can’t lick her, and they have tried. She got reamed in the papers for fining people for wearing blue jeans and because some of her employees were collecting to buy her a birthday present. Given much less publicity is that she was 100 percent cleared by the Inspector General. In the past I have heard some complaints from judges about the way her office handles records, which I found curious because she was in the forefront and a major force in the establishment the Illinois Integrated Justice System--a statewide effort to integrate the computers of all the various law enforcement agencies and court systems of all state, counties and cities in Illinois. It is an effort we extensively covered on the TV show. It’s a massive undertaking that has paid real dividends, and with new technology arriving regularly, it is an ongoing effort. When the blue jeans and birthday present stories hit, it received an excessive amount of coverage of by the daily papers and those same newspapers endorsed her opponent. She also ran against Mayor Daley the prior year. One has to wonder if those same papers who were very protective of the last Mayor come election time, weren’t doing Mayor Daley’s dirty work for him. For all the ranting and raving about Mayor Daley, come election time, they were overly protective and solid supporters. They also never gave the Inspector General’s report its proper day in the sun, considering all the bashing. Having interviewed 30-something judges and knowing so many county officials, I was in a unique position to discreetly find out what they thought of the job her office was doing. All those extra people you see in court are mostly working for the Clerk. The judges, attorneys on both side of the aisle, etc., as well as the general population who go to court from traffic tickets, to divorce, to foreclosure, child support and custody, robberies, burglaries, murders and more, are all dependent on those records Of a little over 20 people who were willing to discuss things under the promise of total anonymity, only two had anything bad to say. Some marvel at the job she is doing, considering the nature of government and the fact that the equipment her office has is not the latest and greatest, because that’s the way government budgets work. Many talked about the high degree of professionalism of her employees, and gave her credit for organization and making increasing amounts of data available online. At one time I might have been curious about what the Tribune might have to say about the job she is doing, but after seeing their endorsements the last few years for extraordinarily lame candidates, over some extremely qualified candidates, it is obvious they play a bit too much ball with the powers that be. One interview with sanctimonious members of a newspaper panel, many of whom have no real knowledge of the needs of most of the various offices, means I care less and less about their picks and so should you. They would be doing the city a favor by following the lead of the Sun-Times and stop making endorsements. How they can endorse and tout people with no administrative experience to run large agencies is absurd. Being a good senator or legislator does not translate into real life administrative skills. The people who depend on Dorothy Brown to make their jobs, courtrooms, etc., work are really happy with the job she is doing. Jewish Chicago strongly endorses Dorothy Brown for re-election as Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County. Most don’t realize that much of the work and direction at the MWRD are done by skilled professional engineers and the like, who have been there for 20 years or more. They are extremely knowledgeable people. They commission studies to schools like the University of Illinois as necessary to understand what they need to do to make the inland waterways as clean as possible. Over the last 20 years the number of fish found in these waterways has approximately doubled--a sign that the water keeps getting cleaner and cleaner and cleaner, though nobody in their right mind should expect to ever safely swim in the North Shore Channel. Never, ever. It is a man-made canal that is 10 feet deep throughout. No sloping shore lines. Get the cramps and you drown. More and more people are using the walkways, building homes, and opening restaurants on the banks of the inland waterways. The methods and efforts put in place by the MWRD are working, and everything keeps improving. They are continually more pristine, but not 99 and 44/100% pure. They have been fiscally prudent, continually shrinking their workforce through retirements, without laying off or firing employees. Through federal decree they have declared the MWRD needs to perform this disinfection at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. Chicago Tribune environmental advocate, Michael Hawthorne, parading as an objective reporter, describes it as something that will cost MWRD taxpayers less than $7 a month. Sounds like an infomercial sales pitch. In real money, we are talking more than $80 a year per family. In an era where governments are so choked, in serious hock on pensions, when we are cutting policeman, library hours, graffiti cleanup, talk of cuts in the fire department, sanitation (3 times this winter my alley went 2 weeks between garbage picks) and more, it’s insane. It’s not just that what the MWRD is doing is working, and now we are going spend like drunks without waiting for a critical study for true scientific guidance, it’s that the bottom of the inland waterways are loaded with heavy metals and dangerous containments that get stirred up and rise if a boat moves too fast. They are going to be releasing that disinfected water right over those contaminants. Let’s also understand that the Obama administration’s dictate puts the full onus of payment on the MWRD. They are not putting their money where their decrees dictate. There are six candidates running for three available slots. In ballot position order, Stella Black does property tax appeals and talks the popular environmental talk without any real knowledge. When she was on my show, Black flashed such ignorance of the facts that I cut her off less than 4 minutes in and ended things. I have never done that with anyone else. Second on the ballot is Commissioner Debra Shore, hailed and celebrated by many as an environmental stalwart, but not on these pages. She can really talk the talk. She makes a great impression, gives great speeches and presentations. She does have some points, but no one actually bothers to check facts, which often, at best, are suppositions based on maybes. No one really knows what is real. She is Jewish. She had a husband and a child and switched teams to be a lesbian. She is a “self-styled” environmentalist. She has a master’s in fine arts in creative writing from Columbia College--a degree that is likely integral to her environmental presentations which are more lacking in reality and loaded with wishes and high hopes than most realize. It’s time she was retired from this type of public life and given the opportunity to spend her time on creative writing properly labeled. Third on the ballot, is Kari K. Steele, 36, whose qualifications are that she has risen through the political ranks as a political worker, She speaks in meaningless populist slogans with no real substance. Fourth is Patrick Daley Thompson, a nephew of Mayor Daley. He is a successful attorney and is extremely intelligent. He really believes in cleaning up the environment, but unlike many of the others, when he speaks to the superintendents and engineers at the MWRD, he is capable of recognizing their expertise, absorb and learn. He’s a good man and President O’Brien highly recommends him. Patricia Young, fifth on the ballot, a former MWRD commissioner for 17 years, left office for a MWRD desk job in 2009, but has thrown her hat back in the ring. She has a master’s in public administration from IIT and has great familiarity with the real life workings of the MWRD. President O’Brien has a lot of respect for her and so do we. Last is Commissioner Patricia Horton, whose political sponsor, former State Sen. Ricky Hendon, has left politics. She has not been impressive during her term in office. Jewish Chicago endorses Patrick Daley Thompson and Patricia Young for Commissioners of the MWRD. Judicial Races This year we put an extra special emphasis on the judicial scene. There are a lot more races than usual, many of them hotly contested, a lot of high quality candidates and it’s an all too neglected area on the electoral road. If you haven’t read the introduction, it would behoove you to check out the judicial preview and then come right back. There will be three levels of ratings: First the opinions of highly rated and respected legal and judicial people. Second, a look at the bar ratings. Third I’ll give you my opinion and who I will be voting for. As for ratings, it is important to understand the value and meaning of the bar associations. I spoke to numerous members of the Judicial and Legal Community and gave the most weight to those who were not pushing or advocating candidates. The Chicago Bar Association is considering by far the most thorough of all, though politics and preferences can enter the fray. They are, after all, human. The Alliance consists of eleven bar associations. Their representatives all gather together as a group to interview the various candidates and each hear and see the exact the same thing. Marty Levinson “The greatest barber in the history of barbers” Avy Meyers North Town News Magazine Marty has a new location Franks’s Barber Shop, 6201 W. Touhy Kitty Corner from the Target 773-610-9268 A bar association that gives the candidate an NE, means Not Evaluated through no fault of the candidate and that tells you the bar association was not present for the interview. Candidates who choose not to appear are penalized going forward. It usually indicates that the candidate feels he is not going to get good ratings and is dodging them. Almost all members of the Alliance are special interest groups and invariably have some built in prejudice. The exception is the Illinois State Bar Association, who are just plain not as thorough as the Chicago Bar Association. The Cook County Bar Association would seem generic, but are given no special respect by the JLC. The following have obvious interests: The Asian Bar Association, the Black Women’s Lawyer Association, the Decalogue Society (Jewish), Hellenic Bar Association, Hispanic Lawyers Association, Lesbian and Gay Bar Association. Puerto Rican Bar Association and the Women’s Bar Association. The Chicago Council of Lawyers is highly thought of by many and are more thorough than most. Their prejudice is so-called liberal or progressive candidates. I have yet to hear a JLC member rave about them unless their politics are similar to the Council. For the purpose of my evaluation, I give the Chicago Bar Association more weight than all the rest. There are two other groupings, the Decalogue Society because this is a Jewish publication and the sum total of the ratings of the other ten members of the Alliance. A number of judges are appointed. If they lose an election, they are often reappointed if they have proper political pull or if they are quality judges. Individual members of the Supreme Court do the appointing and they take turns. The new rules are that if they lose an election they will not be reappointed. Appointed judges gave up their old jobs, be it a partnership in a law firm or a governmental position as a prosecutor or public defender. Those not elected will be jobless with no guarantee of employment. That is why so many are running because they were all told they will not be reappointed unless elected. A third category is Associate Judge. When certain openings occur all vested judges at a certain level vote among a number of pre-selected candidates and the winners becoming associates. That is a life time job, though they don’t have quite the full benefits of an elected judge. The salary is about ten-thousand dollars smaller and they don’t get to vote for associates. I don’t know what all the differences are, but those two seem the most important to the JLC. There are some associates running against people whose careers are on the line and there is a selfishness to that, I am not fond of. Many of those of those on the line are older and are legitimately concerned about their futures. I often interviewed a half a dozen or more judges for a TV shoot and topped out at ten and fourteen. ב"ה Over time the JLC has been more comfortable including me in their conversations and I learned a lot. The judicial and legal community dwell on just three, appointed incumbent Supreme Court Judge Mary Jane Theis, Appellate Court Judge Aurelia Pucinski and Appellate Court Judge Joy V. Cunningham. By and large the majority really like Aurelia Pucinski and think despite some poor ratings that she is a quality judge and the best campaigner of all and that she will upset the apple cart and win. Ratings wise, Theis and Cunningham have highly qualified from the Chicago Bar Association. Pucniski is rated qualified. Theis has the highest grades from six members of the alliance and Cunningham, two. Pucinski has her share of not-qualified. Judge James G. Riley is rated qualified by all but one and Thomas Flannigan only got one passing grade. As for me, I am not a JLC or a legal scholar. I am impressed by Theis’ marks and brains but find her lacking emotional resonance. Cunningham is brilliant, Pucinski impresses me with her wisdom, fairness and humanity. I asked a lot of people why the low ratings and they felt she was a really excellent judge. I am voting for Judge Aurelia Pucinski for the Supreme Court. Appellate Court When a case is appealed it goes to the Appellate Court. There are 24 appellate court judges who sit in panels of four, three of whom preside over each race. When going before the bar associations, written samples are required, as an integral part of their work is legal research. There are six appellate races. Three are not contested. Judge Nathaniel Howse whose ratings are sky high; Judge Maureen Elizabeth Connors who received excellent Alliance ratings and a qualified from the CBA; and Judge Terrence Lavin who has good ratings. In the Cahill vacancy there are six candidates and I interviewed three and made contact with a fourth. Judge Pamela Hill-Veal and Judge Laura Marie Sullivan are poorly rated. The main conversation from the JLC was about Judge Matt Delort, largely because he is from West Rogers Park. Judge James Michael McGing and Judge Kay Marie Hanlon are both very well thought of. Those three all are rated highly qualified by the CBA. Delort and Hayes edged McGing mildly in the Alliance ratings and were all equally rated by the Decalogue Society. I would really like to vote for all three. I know exactly who I am voting for, but not because they stand out over the other two. It is more of a personal preference so I choose to stay silent in print. The Gallagher vacancy also contains an embarrassment of quality candidates. I interviewed all three and would be proud to vote for all three. I didn’t hear a single bad word about any of them from the JLC and heard much praise and positive opinions. The candidates are Judge Patrick Sherlock, Judge P. Scott Neville, Jr and Judge Marguerite Anne Quinn. The alliance is in love with Judge P. Scott Neville Jr. with six high grades including the Decalogue Society. Judge Patrick Sherlock has passing marks from all but the liberal Council. Judge Marguerite Quinn has mostly not recommended grades. Interestingly, the CBA rates all three equally qualified. Who am I voting for?. Neville is brilliant and exemplary, Sherlock has something special going for him and Quinn is an exceptionally fine individual. When my decision comes down to personal considerations, it does not belong in Jewish Chicago. The O’Brien vacancy has five contestants. Judge Jesse Reyes, Judge Rudolfo Garcia, Judge William S. Boyd, Judge Ellen Flannigan, and Don Sampen. Judge Reyes is very popular with the JLC as is Judge Boyd who were both interviewed. Marks wise the Chicago Bar Association found Sampen highly qualified, Flannigan not recommended and the other three qualified. Reyes and Garcia barely edged Sampen with the Alliance and the Decalogue Society gave their highest rating only to Reyes. My vote goes to Judge Jesse Reyes with Judge Boyd a close second. Cook County Circuit Court Uncontested races in the circuit court and the subcircuits will not be addressed. The Conlon Vacancy has three candidates, Karen Lynn O’Malley, Jo Anne Hopson Guillemette who has bad marks across the board and chose not to appear before the CBA and Stanley Hill. The JLC like O’Malley and Hill. Both have similar ratings across the board. I am voting for Karen Lynn O’Malley. The Kinnaird vacancy is a two person race and I interviewed both Kevin Cunningham and Judge Erica Reddick. Both appear to be liked by their peers. The CBA and Decalogue Society rate them equally and Reddick has the edge with the Alliance. My vote goes to Judge Erica Reddick. The O’Brien vacancy Cynthia Ramirez who has the endorsement of the Cook County Democratic Party, takes on Gerald V. Cleary. I interviewed Ramirez. The JLC did not talk up either one. The CBA gave Cleary it’s highest grade and found Ramirez qualified. They both got the highest marks from the Decalogue Society. Ramirez has the best grades from the Alliance. I haven’t made up my mind on this race. The Frossard vacancy has four candidates. Nicholas C. Patton, Judge Kevin Horan, Judge Diann Marsalek. Marsalek is really well liked in the legal community, Horan too. Wimberly received bad grades across the board. Patton got her share of bad grades, largely from inexperience. Horan got passing grades across the board, and other than the liberal Chicago Council of Lawyers, Marsalek did well. You are invited to an exclusive Tannenbaum I really hate that 2014 Orringto either Marsalek or Evanston, IL Horan won’t be a judge after this election, and in a close call I am going to vote for Marsalek. last chance megillah reading 4:30 pm sharp The Pucinski at the Tannenbaum Chabad House vacancy has two 2014 Orrington, Evanston opponents whom ING: FEATUR er in I know. Maloney got a Highly recommended from The Decalogue Society. I got to see Propes impugn me publicly. She called to apologize the next day. I like Ed Maloney a lot and he is my clear choice in this race. The Simmons vacancy has three challengers Michael Forti, Jessica O’Brien and James Wright. It’s funny how in some races I’ve interviewed everybody and heard tons about them and in others, nothing. All I have to go on here are grades. Michael Forti gets the highest marks from the CBA. O’Brien has passing grades across the board and the Hispanic bar group rate Wright highly and the African Americans gave him a thumbs down. My vote goes to Michael A. Forti. The Stewart vacancy. Seven candiates Pamela Leeming, Terrence Jordan, Deidre Baumann, Mary Margaret Burke, Sammy Lacey Jr., Rhonda Sallee and Steve Demitro. I interviewed Leeming, Baumann and Sallee. This is another race where I didn’t get much buzz from the JLC. Leeming is the only candidate with passing grades across the board, but non were high grades. Burke got a passing grade from the CBA and flunked the entire Alliance. Jordan, Lacy, Demitro and Salle failed to get a single passing grade. In Salle’s case it was lack of experience. Baumann who is Jewish had the second highest marks and has had members of the Decalogue Society stick up for her. My vote goes to Deidre Baumann. The Ward vacancy is the final county wide race. I interviewed two candidates and had contact with a third. The field contains Alfred M. Swanson, Denise Marie Nalley, Elizabeth Mary Hayes, Joan Marie Kubalanza, Peter J. Vilkelis and Brian J. Stephenson. In the JLC, Swanson and Vilkelis are well liked. Grade wise, Swanson, Kubalanza, Vilkelis and Stephenson have very close to the exact same grades. I interviewed both Swanson and Vilkelis and liked them very much; but I have a clear choice. Peter J. Vilkelis gets my vote. Subcircuit Races We are only going to deal with contested races in Jewish area or of Jewish Interest. Sixth Subcircuit Beatriz Santiago, Mark Ferrante, Gregory Emmet Ahern Jr., Carlos Claudio, Kent Delgado and Ricardo Lugo comprise the field. I interviewed Claudio and Ferrante. No JLC buzz worth reporting. Ferrante got the highest marks from the CBA and the Decalogue Society. Ahern got also got an HQ from the CBA. Ferrante wins the Alliance big time. Mark Ferrante, who has serious ties to the Jewish comnmunity is my clear choice in the Sixth subcircuit. Eighth Subcircuit Chiola vacancy - Rodney Stewart, Judge Celia Gamrath, Judge James Shapiro and Thomas Osran The JLC clearly likes Shapiro, he is very popular and highly thought of. Gamrath is respected. The CBA gave both Shapiro and Gamrath HQ’s. Shapiro also got an HQ from the Decalogue Society. The Alliance mildly favored Shapiro over Gamrath. Thomas Osran is Jewish and got good grades across the board. Stewart did well with everybody but the council. I interviewed Shapiro and Stewart and had some contact with Gamrath. Shapiro, is a clear pick. Stewart and Ganrath could have been endorsed in the right field. Cole vacancy - Brad Trowbridge, John Ehrlich, Gideon Abraham Baum, Judge Helaine “Lanie” Berger, Judge James L. Kaplan and Ellis Levin. The JLC really likes Judge Kaplan who is presently filling the slot for this vacancy. There are four Jews in this race and that is a crime. There are plenty of other races they could have chosen. Ellis Levin is not well liked and Judge Berger who is an Associate with a lifetime job created resentment by running against the popular Kaplan who is up in years and is caring for a special needs child. Ratings: John Ehrlich edges the rest, Kaplan got good grades across the board, Berger got low grades from the CBA and the council. Brad Trowbridge lacks experience, but that can be obtained. Judge James Kaplan is a clear choice in a slam dunk runaway. Roy vacancy - Judge Deborah Jean Gubin, Sharon Finegan Patterson and Judge Nicholas Geanopoulos. Judge Deborah Jean Gubin, is very well liked and respected. She got the only high grade from the Decalogue Society and easily wins the Alliance. Patterson has slightly better grades than Geanopoulos who passing grades from every one. Judge Deborah Jean Gubin who is Jewish, has the best grades, if I lived in the eighth, I’d vote for her. Ninth Subcircuit Bender vacancy - Judge Michael Ian Bender versus Judge Lionel Jean Baptiste. The JLC loves Bender and thought the world of his father. They both have done pro bono work for Nazi hunter Simon Weisenthal’s as his personal lawyer. I can’t begin to tell you how many non-Jewish judges tried to butter me up by talking up Judge Michael Bender. When he worked for the village of Skokie, he made sure that every indigent Jew who passes away was taken care of by the Jewish Sacred Society and arranged for a proper Jewish burial for all who had the need with Chicago Jewish Funerals. He has close relationships with a number of area Rabbis, I could go on and on. Judge Baptiste is a very fine individual and I like him. His ratings are a bit lower than Bender’s but he gets all passing grades. He is very popular with the Evanston crowd where he was alderman and works very hard at everything he does to get where he is in life. There a lot of races where he would be my choice, but I can’t think any judicial race that is more important to me than this one. My vote goes to Michael Bender and I would choose him over every single other judge on the ballot. He is the single most important endorsement in this publication. Epstein vacancy - Judge Mary Trew, Abbey Fishman Romanek, David C. Adams and Judge Larry Axelrood. My least favorite candidate in this election is Abbey Fishman Romanek. She used the facilites of the office of the Attorney General of Illinois to do political work for Dan Seals; She got caught and was told to resign or be fired. There is more, but why bother. No thanks Abbey. David C.Adams is a really good lawyer who works with former Judges and brilliant legal minds, Marv Leavitt and Alan Greiman. He gets poor grades because his experience is in the Appellate courts and not the sort of trail cases he would encounter by winning a circuit court slot, but it’s obvious the CBA thought highly of him. I think the world of Mary Trew’s legal ability. A lot of lawyers think very highly of her. She always get good bar ratings and takes her work very seriously. She belongs on the bench. In Larry Axelrood I am presented with a dilemma. He is an associate and is guaranteed a job. Yet the JLC thinks the world of him; he has far and away the highest grades, does some incredibly noble deeds and is Jewish. I really hate picking anybody over Mary Trew, especially an Associate, but I have to pick Larry Axelrood in this race. We’ll close with a race in the Twelfth Subcircuit in suburban Cook County that has a lot of Jewish territory. Running for the Rochford vacancy - Judge Andrea Schleifer, Michael John Halloran, Robert F. Babbitt, Daniel P. Scott, James C. Murray and Jerome Pieczonka. Babbit, Scott and Murray can be knocked out right away, due to their horrid ratings. Murray has good ratings across the board, nothing low or high. Halloran and Schleifer have close to the same marks. Schleifer gets good buzz from the JLC; she is Jewish, very conscientious, and if I lived in the Twelfth Subcircuit, Andrea M. Andy Schleifer would be clear choice. … ! t&YQMBOBUJPOTPGUIF.JTILBO BOEJUTWFTTFMTQSPDFFEJOH UISPVHIFBDIWFSTFJO1BSBTIBT 5FSVNBIUIFMBTUWFSTFTJO 1BSBTIBT5FU[BWFSFHBSEJOH UIF(PMEFO.J[CFBDIBOE UIFWFSTFTJO1BSBTIBT,J4JTB SFHBSEJOHUIF,JZZPS t5IF$IVNBTIXJUIUSPQ UPHFUIFSXJUI0OLFMFTBOE 3BTIJXIJDIFOBCMFTUIFSFBEFS UPCFNBBWJSTFESB t"O&OHMJTIUSBOTMBUJPOPGFBDI WFSTFBMPOHXJUIFYQMBOBUJPOT BOEGPPUOPUFT t'VMMDPMPSJMMVTUSBUJPOT $23 Available at Judaica stores or call 440-944-7583 Jewish Chicago Endorses...
