60 Years and Counting!
Founded by Monsignor Harold J. Bolton, St.
Mary’s Cathedral Federal Credit Union had its
charter issued by the National Department
of Health, Education, and Welfare on March
9, 1956. This was the beginning of Catholic

very excited for 2016 with special things planned for current and
future members. In this quarter’s newsletter I want to share some

assets of $8,841 and an operating loss of $10

This year, Catholic Federal hit a major milestone, as we celebrate 60
years of member service.

September 1984 – Hoyt Street, Saginaw office closed
•
October 1986 – Cass Ave, Bay City office purchased

Securing Social Security Seminar
S MART PHO N E S E C U RIT Y T I P S
With a rise in consumers depending on Smartphones to act as personal
computers, it is important to use security measures to keep any sensitive
information secure. The Identity Theft Resource Center, San Diego, Calif.,
recommends these best practices for mobile device users:
•
Password-protect your phone. Use a strong password (numbers,
upper- and lower-case letters, and symbols).
•
Enroll in a backup/wiping program. This service backs up information
on your smartphone to your home computer and “wipes” your phone
if it’s lost or stolen so no data remains on the device itself.
•
Install security software. Companies offer antivirus, malware,
and security software designed for smartphones. Make sure you
download software updates.
•
Download apps from trusted sources. Some “bad apps” contain
malware.
•
Install a “phone finder” app. These apps are designed to help you
find your phone if it becomes lost or stolen.
•
Checks URLs before making a purchase using your smartphone. Any
page that requires credit card information should start with https://. This means it is a secured site.
Do not access financial accounts from free, public networks. Public WiFi hotspots are a prime target for hackers who then have direct access
to your mobile device.

Social Security is fairly simple provided you
worked long enough to earn the required
number of quarters and were never married.
However, when you add two-income couples and/or divorce
into the mix—both historically high among baby boomers—the
decisions can become more complicated. Making the wrong
choices can result in less monthly income for the rest of your life.

When to consider claiming Social Security benefits

How being married, divorced or widowed can potentially
impact your benefits

ERIN’S STORY
When I made the decision to transfer to a university far from home, I knew I was going to
incur costs that I wasn’t sure I could afford. After I calculated how much in Federal loans
I would receive, I felt stuck and frustrated. It just wasn’t enough to pay for tuition, rent,
and everything else like textbooks and living expenses. Friends of mine recommended I
look into a private student loan solution at Catholic Federal Credit Union and it has made
ALL the difference in the last few years. The woman I worked with was so kind and helpful, making it simple
and easy to see why so many of my friends went there for their student loan needs. The personalized member
service I received is the main reason they are still my primary credit union today, even though I’m living a few
hours away. The extra loan for the next couple of years helped me afford a place to stay in a safe neighborhood,
and it covered the cost of all my textbooks and extra class expenses while I successfully completed my college
education. Today, just a few years after applying for my first loan at Catholic Federal, I am the new Executive Director at a local nonprofit called
Open Roads Bike Program. We teach youth bike mechanic skills and social skills in order to better prepare them for their future, and I am so
grateful to be in this position. Thanks to my local credit union, I was able to be better prepared for MY future and the career I am in today!
