Suitability
1. Which type of car suits your needs?
The first thing you should think about is what
you need from a car. What are the things you
are going to be doing and what type of car best
meets those needs?
Have difficulty parking?
Here are some questions to consider
as a starting point:
•How many people are going to travel in it regularly?
•Will you be doing a lot of motorway driving?
•Do you mainly do short journeys in built up areas?
•How much boot space do you need?
•Is parking a problem?
•Are you able to change gear easily?
•If you have a mobility aid, will it fit easily into the car?
•Do you need to take your scooter or wheelchair with you?
Need to carry pets?
For instance, if you mainly drive in built up areas with low speed
limits, a petrol engine might be more suitable. This is because
most diesel vehicles are fitted with Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs)
and many of these need to be regenerated by regularly travelling
at speeds over 40mph. If you have a big family you may want
to consider a large family car or MPV. If you find it difficult to
change gear easily, an automatic might be a good choice.
You’ll also need to think about travelling in the car day to day.
Small changes in type, model or specification can have a big
impact on your comfort or the car’s suitability. For example,
seat height, door opening angle and positioning of the seat
belts can all make a big difference. A good place to start is to
think about your current car, if you have one, and decide what
you like and dislike about it. It may be useful to refer to the
quick checklist on page 6.
Transporting a wheelchair?
Adaptations and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles
For information on adaptations to make driving or travelling
easier (such as hand or steering controls) and Wheelchair
Accessible Vehicles (specially designed to accommodate your
wheelchair), please see pages 29 and 34 of this guide.

of what each category means e.g. hatchback, MPVs, 4x4, etc.
on pages 10-16 of this guide. If you are at all unsure as to
what’s right for you, then your local dealer will be glad to help
you. Your dealer will take you through a Motability Suitability
Questionnaire, which is designed to make sure the car you’re
considering, and Motability, is right for you. Remember,

2. Which cars come within your budget?
Above all, Motability aims to make leasing a brand new car affordable. So once you have decided
what sort of car would suit you best, you need to know which ones are within your budget.
Keeping fuel costs down
Don’t forget that your lease includes
everything, except fuel, to provide you
with worry-free motoring, so you will
need to take into account the car’s fuel
costs. To keep the running costs down
you may want to consider a more fuel
efficient engine. Each car listed has a
‘miles per gallon’ (mpg) figure; cars with
a higher mpg cost less to run and
usually provide lower CO2 emissions
over the course of your lease.
Remember the mpg given is a guide
to help you compare cars and is based
on test conditions. The actual mpg each
car achieves in real world driving is
likely to be lower than the official figure.
Choose a car to suit your budget
When you lease a car through Motability, there are three pricing options.
However, no matter how much you pay or what car you choose, all customers
will enjoy the same all-inclusive package of insurance, breakdown cover,
servicing, tyres and glass replacement. The three pricing options are:
1 Cars that cost less than your
allowance – a range of over 150
cars on the Scheme cost less than
your mobility allowance, meaning
the remainder will be paid directly
to you by the Department for Work
and Pensions (DWP). These cars
are available to lease at a fixed
weekly amount for the whole
of your agreement and there is no
Advance Payment required. For
more information, see page 9
of this guide.
2 Cars that cost the same as your
allowance – we have a range of
over 300 cars that cost the same as
your allowance. There’s no Advance
Payment and you simply swap the
whole of your weekly mobility
allowance for the car of your choice.
You can also find these cars by
looking in the guide for cars which
have ‘NIL’ in the Advance Payment
column and ‘T/A’ (total allowance)
in the Weekly Rental column.
3 Cars that cost the same as your
allowance but also have an
Advance Payment – you can
increase your choice of cars by
topping up your allowance with
a non-refundable upfront payment
which we call the Advance Payment.
This payment covers the difference
between your allowance and the
total cost of the lease over the
course of your agreement.
To give you an idea of costs, for
each car listed we have highlighted
the average annual fuel costs which
can help you compare between cars
and see which option might save
you money.
Trade-in your old car
If you are new to Motability, you can
trade-in your privately owned car to
help finance the Advance Payment
of your new car.
Many Motability dealerships will
offer this and the dealer will arrange
the trade-in with you directly. To find

Test drive
3. Try out a few cars before you finally decide
Once you’ve worked out what type of car you want and looked at the available options,
it’s very important that you take a few different cars out for a test drive.
A test drive is the only way to find out properly
whether a car is right for you and your dealer will
be more than happy to arrange this. Even if you
choose a car similar to the one you drive now, you
may well discover that the manufacturer has made
a number of changes and alterations to the latest
model, so it is advisable to take a test drive to make
sure you are still happy with your choice.
There are three parts to a successful
test drive:
1. Ins and outs: Take time to check you are happy
about getting in and out of the vehicle.
2. Dealer demonstration: Ask the dealer to show
you around the vehicle and explain all the features.
3. On the road: Take the car out on the road with
the dealer. Check how comfortable it is to drive, or
travel in, and how easy it is to park.
Use this handy checklist to mark each feature of the car you test drive
out of 10. Add up the totals and see which one comes out on top!

Take your time on your drive and remember that
the final decision is always yours. It’s also worth
bearing in mind that the delivery times will differ
for different makes and models. Ask your dealer
what the expected delivery time might be as it
may affect your choice.
Test driving automatics, adapted cars
and WAVs
If you want to test drive an automatic car you will
need to arrange this when you call your dealer as
there are often less of these models available on
site. To try out adaptations, it may be worth
contacting a Mobility Centre – see page 29 for
further details. Meanwhile, if you are opting for a
WAV, specialist WAV converters will travel to your
home to help make this easier.

How to use this car price guide
Average mpg
CO2 emissions
The cost of each car may differ depending on whether you
receive the Higher Rate Mobility Component (HRMC) of the
Disability Living Allowance (DLA); the Enhanced Rate of the
Mobility Component (ERMC) of Personal Independence
Payment (PIP); or the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement
(WPMS). Armed Forces Independence Payment recipients
should refer to PIP prices. Prices are based on a three year
lease agreement.
This figure shows the
average number of
miles a car can travel
for every gallon of
fuel. This depends on
the driving conditions,
such as if the car is
being driven in an
urban environment
or on motorways. Fuel
consumption figures
are for comparison
purposes and may
not be the same as
the figure actually
achieved.
All cars sold within the EU are subject to
exhaust emission tests. Test results are
given as an emission level in grammes per
kilometre (g/km) travelled. Green shading
highlights the lowest CO2 emission options.
Automatic
Fuel type
This shows you what kind of fuel the car takes,
such as Petrol (P), Diesel (D), Electric (E) or if the car
is a Hybrid (H).
Fuel type
This box shows which cars are classed as automatic (l)
or semi-automatic (l). Cars classified as semi-automatic
will vary from model to model. Make sure you test drive
any type of vehicle you haven’t driven before. Speak to
your dealer for more details of different transmission types.
If you have restrictions on the type of transmission your
driving licence allows you to drive, please ensure you check
with your dealer and the DVLA before you place your order.

Weekly Rental
The non-refundable amount payable upfront to your
dealer in addition to your weekly mobility allowance.
The amount of the Advance Payment depends on the
car you choose.
Shows the relevant amount of your allowance (either DLA, PIP or
WPMS) that will be paid to Motability Operations each week. T/A
stands for ‘Total Allowance’ and means that the total amount of the
higher rate mobility allowance is payable in exchange for your car
(from 9 April 2014 T/A is £56.75 for HRMC of DLA and ERMC of PIP;
and £63.40 for WPMS).
Vehicle descriptions
This guide uses abbreviations in the descriptions of the
cars. To help you understand what they mean, we’ve
included a glossary on a fold out in the back of this guide.
Some of the abbreviations are manufacturer specific, and
more information can be found on their relevant websites.
Where T/A is payable, any increases in the mobility allowance are
calculated into the total cost of the lease and will be paid directly
to Motability Operations. However, where the weekly rental is fixed
and is less than the total allowance, the actual fixed weekly payment
is shown and any increases in your allowance will not be paid to
Motability Operations.
The small print
• This guide should be read in conjunction with
either ‘Your guide to leasing a Motability car’
or ‘A guide to leasing your next car’.
• All cars are subject to availability.
• The prices contained within this guide are
subject to change on a quarterly basis.
• You need to have at least 12 months’ award
remaining to be eligible for a Motability lease.
• Customers living on the Isle of Man may be
subject to an additional fee.
• Insurance and loss and damage protection
is included in the Contract Hire lease. However,
in the event of a claim you will be asked to pay
an excess unless a third party is found to be
at fault. Full insurance details are available on
request and are provided in the Cover Booklet
supplied with your Motability car.
• The Contract Hire lease package comes with
a mileage allowance of 60,000 for three
year leases and 100,000 for five year WAV
agreements. If you go over this amount, you
will be charged 5p for each extra mile.
• The terms, conditions, prices and model
features set out in this car price guide are
correct at time of going to print. However,
these may be subject to adjustment or
withdrawal in the event of any changes
taking place which affect the cost of the
provision of the Contract Hire agreement
or vehicle availability.
• Adaptations shown are available at the time
of printing, and Motability reserves the right
to withdraw products at any time.
• Restrictions and higher excesses are applied
to drivers aged under 25, speak to your dealer
for more information.

Adaptations
Adaptations
Adaptations are a range of devices that
can be fitted to your car to help make
driving, or travelling, easier. Typically,
adaptations fall into three categories: they
can help you drive, stow your wheelchair
or scooter, or get in and out of the car.
We currently offer around 400 different
adaptations through our Motability
Managed Adaptations Programme, where
the adaptations are fitted before your car
is delivered and the price of the adaptation
is paid along with the Advance Payment
to your dealer at the start of the lease.
The adaptations included over the next
few pages are just a sample of the
selection available – for a full list please
see our website, motability.co.uk. To take
advantage of the prices listed, you must
order any adaptations you need through
your Motability dealer at the same time
that you order your car. All prices include
installation and any maintenance that
may be required. Further adjustments
carried out by your installer may result
in an additional charge.
Choosing the right adaptation
Adaptations are not suitable for every type
of car so it’s important to consider the
adaptations you need before you choose
your car. Your local Motability adaptation
installer will be happy to help. There are
more than 100 installers across the UK
and you can find all their contact details,
and information on which adaptations
they provide, at motability.co.uk. If you
don’t have internet access you can call
us on 0800 093 1000.
If you’ve never driven with an adaptation
before, it may be worth visiting a Mobility
Centre for an assessment. These centres
offer independent, professional information
and advice and can help you find the
adaptations that best suit your particular
needs. There are a number of Mobility

Mechanical hand controls and left foot accelerator
If you find using foot pedals for braking or acceleration
difficult, you may be better off using a hand control, such
as a push/pull device or a radial accelerator. There are a
number of different hand controls available from different
manufacturers, but the basic function is the same across
most models – the foot pedals are controlled by devices
installed around the steering column and wheel, allowing
you to use your hands to push or pull a lever to control
the speed of the car or when you need to stop. Most
push/pull hand controls can be ordered with a built-in
indicator switch at no extra cost.

If you cannot operate the standard accelerator pedal
in an automatic car, you may benefit from having a left
foot accelerator fitted. This system transfers the original
acceleration control of the car to an extra pedal fitted
on the left side, allowing you to manage your speed
in a way that’s more comfortable for you. With most
installations, the original accelerator pedal can still be
used when the left foot pedal is not deployed, so the car
can also be driven safely by any nominated drivers who
do not require adaptations. We recommend seeking
advice from an adaptations installer first if you have
not used this type of adaptation before.

Steering aids
If you have difficulty using a standard steering wheel, there are a number of solutions that may be able to help. A steering
wheel ball can be fitted to allow for easier control. The driver simply holds the ball and uses it to move the wheel in the direction
you want to go. If you’re having hand controls fitted, then it is often essential to have a steering wheel ball to enable you to
steer the car with one hand while operating any hand controls with the other.

Electronic accelerator
If you have limited mobility in your legs, or find push/pull hand controls too tiring, you may find that an electronic accelerator will
help. These devices transfer accelerator control to a ring positioned either above or below the steering wheel or to a trigger device
adjacent to the steering column. Electronic accelerators require less effort than mechanical hand controls and will all come with a
hand operated push brake.

Wheelchair stowage – in car system
If you can’t lift your wheelchair into the boot of your car, a hoist which stores your wheelchair in your
car could be the solution. These wheelchair stowage systems can be a great help by taking the weight
of the wheelchair and manoeuvring it effortlessly for you via a remote control. The size and weight of
your wheelchair or scooter will affect the type of hoist you need, and the type of hoist you need will
affect your choice of car. The price of the boot hoist includes a compatible tie-down to secure the
wheelchair or scooter in the back of the car and most hoists also come with a suitable lifting bracket.

Wheelchair stowage – roof top system
If you can’t lift your wheelchair and you need the boot space of your car to store other things,
rooftop wheelchair stowage could be beneficial. This system consists of an electric hoist which,
when attached to your wheelchair, lifts it up and stores it in a box fitted to the roof of your car.
The type, size and weight of your wheelchair will affect the type of hoist you need, and costs will
vary accordingly. Rooftop stowage systems may mean that you are no longer able to park in
underground car parks or spaces where there are height restrictions.

Permanent swivel seats
If you’re finding getting in and out of your car increasingly difficult or uncomfortable, you may benefit from having a swivel seat fitted
inside your car. The way in which they operate varies from model to model, but the basic function allows the car seat to rotate by 90º,
move out to beyond the sill of the door and in some cases lower or tip, to help make getting in and out of your car easier. Swivel seats
can be manual or powered and can be fitted to either the driver or the passenger side. Your adaptations installer will be able to advise

Wheelchair swivel seats
A wheelchair swivel seat enables you to move in and out of the car without needing to rise from the seat. Once locked in position,
the actual seat itself is transferred from the wheelchair base unit to a swivel base inside the car, all without the wheelchair user
having to move position. It’s easy and comfortable for both the passenger and the person assisting. The wheelchair base unit is
then stored in the car boot. There are both manual and powered wheelchair options available. Like permanent swivel seats it’s
worth checking with an installer if this adaptation is compatible with the car of your choice.

Electric person hoist
If you are a wheelchair user, another option for accessing the car is via an electric person hoist,
which physically lifts you into the car. A specially designed canvas sling is put in position with very
little movement required from the wheelchair user. Heavy duty hooks in the sling are then slipped
onto the hoist and the hoist is raised electronically.

Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs)
If you find transferring from your
wheelchair into a standard car and storing
your wheelchair difficult, then you could
benefit from a WAV. WAVs are vehicles
that have been converted by specialists
so that wheelchair users can travel in them
while remaining in their wheelchair, either
as a passenger or driver. Motability offers
brand new WAVs on a five year lease
based on the exchange of your total
allowance, including any increases. And
with a mileage allowance of up to 100,000
miles over the course of your lease, you’ll
be able to get out and about with the
peace of mind that comes with Motability’s
worry-free motoring package.
This price guide contains a selection
of the many WAVs available to lease
through Motability, and the full range is
available on our website. The vast majority
of Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles are
converted so that the wheelchair user
travels as a passenger, usually in the rear of
the vehicle. WAVs can vary according to size
and style, with base vehicles ranging from
small to large. To help you consider how
each WAV will fit in your day-to-day travel
and individual needs, we’ve added a new
size category to our WAV pricing pages.
There are also a number of optional
extras available which can help to make
access to the WAV easier or travelling
more comfortable, for example a ramp
winch. Speak to your supplier to find
out which optional extras you could get
on the WAVs you’re considering.

What WAV sizes mean
Small
Medium
Large
These WAVs normally have a ramp,
rather than a lift, to allow access to
the vehicle. Most small WAVs can have
at least one rear seat to accommodate
up to four people including a wheelchair
passenger. They usually have a lowered
floor, giving you more headroom
inside the vehicle and reducing the
angle of the ramp, making it easier
to get in and out.
If you have a larger wheelchair or
regularly travel with four or more
passengers or have equipment that
you need to keep with you, a medium
sized WAV might suit your needs.
While most medium WAVs have a ramp,
some are available with an electric lift
instead. Medium WAVs seat between
five and seven people including a
wheelchair passenger.
If you will be regularly travelling
with many passengers and require
a number of extra seats, or if you have
a large or heavy wheelchair, or a lot
of other equipment that you need to
keep with you, then a large WAV is
probably right for you. These WAVs
are usually fitted with a lift to aid entry
into the vehicle, and can be fitted with
additional seats for your passengers.

If you are looking for a more affordable
way to lease a Wheelchair Accessible
Vehicle, but with all the peace of mind
that you would expect from Motability’s
all-inclusive lease package, then
Motability’s Nearly New WAVs might
be for you. Each Nearly New WAV is
no more than three years old, has
a low mileage and, to ensure that we
are able to offer guaranteed quality,
will be carefully checked by a Motability
approved supplier.
Our Nearly New WAVs are available
on a three year lease with a 60,000
mileage allowance and at a lower
Advance Payment than the equivalent
new WAV. Many customers prefer our
Nearly New WAVs due to the shorter
lease length and the quicker delivery
times. However, it’s important to
remember that stock is limited and
availability varies across each Motability
WAV converter.

WAVs that wheelchair users can drive
There are two main conversion types: either the WAV will facilitate easy transfer to a standard/adapted
seat or the vehicle can be driven directly from the wheelchair. Because these conversions have additional
features to enable you to drive independently, they tend to have a higher Advance Payment than
a passenger WAV.
