2011-2012 Annual Report
FUQUA SCHOOL
2011-2012 Annual Report
As I reflect on the 2011-2012 academic year, I am reminded that Fuqua
School’s most valuable assets are its people. From our wonderful students to
our talented faculty to our dedicated parents and grandparents, we all feel a
deep sense of pride and commitment that permeate our school community.
GREETINGS FROM
OUR PRESIDENT
As always, we are so grateful for the support of our many contributors,
support that is central to Fuqua School's continued pursuit of excellence and
to fulfilling its mission of developing the “boundless individual potential” of
each student. We were delighted with the success of our major fundraising
events, Bag the Five Grand Falcon and Falconfest, as well as the growth of
our annual giving through The Skeeter Fore Annual Fund. Our total
fundraising for the year exceeded $210,000.
With your gifts of time and resources and the dedicated efforts of our faculty
and staff, we enjoyed many successes, expanded our program, and provided
our students with a number of meaningful experiences.
•
Twenty-three out of twenty-nine seniors received academic college
scholarships totaling collectively over $2.2 million.
•
One of our graduating seniors, Brandon Ah, received a full
appointment to the Naval Academy.
•
Two students from Fuqua School made history at the 64th Model
General Assembly (MGA) program sponsored by the Virginia YMCA.
Zach Davis was elected Lieutenant Governor and Brandon Ah
became House Speaker for the 2012 session. In the 64-year history of
the program, no school has held both of these elected positions
simultaneously.
•
For the third straight year, Fuqua School qualified for the annual
Battle of Brains competition sponsored by WTVR in Richmond and
the Virginian 529 College Savings Plan, advancing to the top sixteen
schools.
•
Our Senior Band competed in the "Music in the Parks" Competition in
Atlanta, Georgia, earning first place in the Single A High School
Concert Band category.
•
Our Veteran’s Day assembly featured guest speaker, COL Jeffrey
Hice, a twenty-five year U.S. Army Veteran who had recently
returned from a one-year combat tour as a Military Advisor to the
Afghan Army. COL Hice offered thoughtful insight on "What to Say
to a Veteran" and honored Fuqua School with a special American
flag and certificate from Headquarters, International Security
Assistance Force, resting in a display case hand-crafted in Kabul.
CONTINUED … GREETINGS FROM OUR PRESIDENT
•
Our Student Forum focused on forensics science and the American
criminal justice system and featured presentations by a number of
outstanding guests, including keynote speaker, Annette Kiewiet de
Jonge, criminalist supervisor with the California Department of
Justice, who introduced students to the complex world of DNA
analysis.
•
Sixth grade students worked with the nationally acclaimed If I Had A
Hammer program that teaches real-life skills through a hands-on
construction project.
•
We initiated our first Homecoming Day of Service through which all
upper school students participated in a local service project, further
enhancing our focus on giving back to the community.
•
Three new student service clubs were initiated - The International
Club, Fuqua for UNICEF, and the Interact Club sponsored by Rotary
International.
•
We added two new elective courses to the upper school curriculum,
Geography and Honors Literature, as well as Beginning Spanish to
the lower school curriculum, further expanding the scope of our
academic offerings.
•
We launched a lacrosse program for both boys and girls and were
excited when each team won its first game in this inaugural season.
•
Through the vision of our PTSA, a new tradition was created to
recognize the transition from lower to middle school and to celebrate
the close bond our students feel toward one another. A tree was
planted in the name of our rising sixth grade class and marked with a
commemorative plaque.
I extend to each of you a heartfelt “thank you” for your unwavering support
and personal commitment and ask that you continue to serve as ambassadors
for this great institution as we work to truly make a difference in the lives of so
many students.
Ruth S. Murphy, President

ALUMNI AWARD
Each year at Fuqua School’s
Commencement, the Prince
Edward Academy/Fuqua School
Alumni Association presents its
Alumni Recognition Award to
an alumna/us who
demonstrates enthusiasm,
devotion, and dedication
toward his/her career,
community, or to Fuqua School.
The recipient of the 2012 Award
was Elisha Edward "Ted" Hodges
III ‘79. Hodges was chosen to
receive the Award to recognize
his willingness to lend a hand,
no matter what his high school
alma mater needs. Hodges is a
talented photographer, who is
endeared for the moments he
captures, and then so
generously shares with the
school community.
Hodges, a graduate of
Longwood University, is now
the President of Maxey and
Associates. In his spare time, he
serves as secretary for the Prince
Edward Ruritans and is on the
Johns Memorial Episcopal
Church Vestory. He and his
wife, Sarah, live in Farmville.
They have two daughters,
Elizabeth and Kyle, both
graduates of Fuqua School.
ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
2011 Athletics Hall of Fame Inductees
Dan Phillips ‘69
Cindy Farmer ‘76
John Adams ‘86
Denise “Deedle” Murphy Bachman ‘94
Jon Martin ‘97
Established in 1999, the Athletics Hall of Fame honors those who have made
lasting contributions by their outstanding achievement in athletics or service
to the athletics program. The Hall of Fame inducts not only former athletes,
but also coaches, administrators, and others who have contributed to the rich
athletics history. In addition, “Special Citations” are awarded to recognize
individuals making similar contributions in support roles.
To be eligible for selection, the candidate's most recent contribution in high
school athletics must have occurred five or more years prior to his/her
induction. Consideration is given to All-State, All-Conference, MVP, and other
similar awards, as well as team captaincy, how the individual compared to
other athletes of the era, and leadership.
Nomination forms are available through Fuqua School's Office of Alumni
Affairs.
OUR NEWEST ALUMNI ~ CLASS OF 2012
Fuqua School held its commencement exercises on May 25, 2012 on the lawn of
the upper school. In keeping with its tradition of inviting outstanding alumni to
speak at graduation, Karen Booth Adams ‘87, was selected as speaker. Karen
serves as CEO of Hot Technology Holdings, a group of entrepreneurs and
investors who have launched ten successful businesses since 1993. Karen shared
her words of wisdom and encouraged the class of 2012 to explore their career
choice not just with college classes. She stressed the need to actually find
someone in that career with whom to intern or volunteer. “Find out if this is
what you really want to do before spending your college years pursuing it.” Her
message continued, “Take risks while you can.” The presentation of diplomas by
President Ruth S. Murphy and Sandra F. Moss, Vice-Chair, Rural Education
Foundation Board of Directors, followed.
All twenty-nine graduates plan to attend a college or university. There are 11
Summa Cum Laude graduates, 5 Magna Cum Laude and 4 Cum Laude.
Collectively, the graduates have been offered over $2.2 million in academic
scholarships. Fuqua School 2012 graduates were offered admission to the

WHY DOES FUQUA SCHOOL
NEED ANNUAL GIVING?
Fuqua School’s tuition covers only about 70% of the cost of
educating its students; therefore, the tuition of every Fuqua
School student is supplemented.
With the support of alumni and friends, we can keep tuition as
affordable as possible and, together, ensure that our kindergarten
students have the same opportunity to graduate from this
excellent school as children have had for the past 50 years.
Non-Academic Income:
Extended Day Care
Summer Programs
Pool Memberships/Events
Athletics (gate rec/intramural)
Food Service
Catering/Facilities Rental
WAYS TO GIVE
PAM BUTLER WELCOMED
INTO LEGACY CIRCLE
Fuqua School inducted its third
Legacy Circle member, Pam
Butler of Farmville. Ms. Butler
has been a longtime friend
and supporter of the school.
Mr. Dickie Cralle and Mr.
Bobby Showalter were the first
inductees.
The Legacy Circle recognizes
with honor all donors who
have made a significant
investment in the quality of
education provided at Fuqua
School with their cumulative
gifts of $100,000 or more.
There are many ways to make a gift to Fuqua School, including
gifts of cash, stock, real estate, and life insurance as well as
bequests or charitable trusts. Gifts are tax-exempt under Section
501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. We will be glad to
discuss giving options with you. For more information please
contact the Director of Development, at 434-392-4131, ext. 273.
Matching Gifts
Often your gift to Fuqua School can be doubled or tripled by matching
funds from your employer. Please contact your employer's Human
Resource Department for more information.
Credit Card
Paying by credit card provides several potential benefits including
extending your payment over a period of time and receiving
promotional benefits from your credit card company. We accept Visa,
MasterCard and Discover.
Securities
When making a gift of appreciated securities, you may receive a
charitable deduction for the market value of the gift and save the
capital gains tax which would otherwise be payable upon the sale of
the assets. To receive these benefits, securities must be transferred to
Fuqua School prior to the sale. Our Director of Development can assist
you in these transmittals.
School Program Support
When you shop, keep Fuqua School in mind. Many businesses such as
Campbell’s, Food Lion, General Mills Boxtops for Education, Kroger,
and Target have school support programs. At www.onecause.com,
register Fuqua School as your recipient; you can turn everyday
shopping into dollars for Fuqua School.
Gifts-in-Kind
Gifts-in-kind are non-monetary contributions, including goods and
services.
Gifts of Real Estate
Pictured (l-r)
Ms. Pam Butler and Ms. Ruth
Murphy, President of Fuqua School
Making a gift of property can benefit both Fuqua School and you.
Because your residence, vacation home, timeshare, or acreage have
appreciated in value through the years, a sizable capital gains tax
would be assessed on any sale. A gift to Fuqua School would avoid the
capital gains tax, and you would receive a charitable tax deduction for
the full market value of the property.
The only gift too small is no gift at all!

THE SKEETER FORE FUND
The only gift that is too small is no gift at all.
As with previous generations, the population
from which Fuqua School draws is economically
and socially diverse. Parents still work multiple
jobs to pay tuition, recognizing that it is an
investment for a lifetime. For them, Fuqua School
not only provides the opportunity for their
children to pursue an academic program which
opens the door to top colleges and universities
but, perhaps more importantly, equips them with
the qualities and skills to pursue their dreams.
The Skeeter Fore Fund is not an athletic
scholarship. It is intended to help provide
financial support to all program areas, keeping
the school in the forefront of academic
excellence.

BAG THE FIVE GRAND FALCON
Kicking off the Christmas season with the Five
Grand Falcon fundraiser has been a Fuqua
School tradition for years. The decorations,
festive spirits, and generous giving set the tone
for a great holiday season. This event, which is
looked forward to by so many, generated
$39,000 in proceeds to our school and good will
among many. The silent auction allowed plenty
of browsing and bidding, while the live auction
created excitement and friendly competition.
Auctioneers Jimmy Carwile and Tom Jones, with
Carwile Auctions, once again gave their best to
Fuqua School, and we are so thankful to them
for donating their time, energy and expertise
again this year. The outstanding food, provided
by John Ellington and his amazing staff, was a
delight for many. All the success of the evening
is due to the generosity of the many donors and
sponsors, the hard work of the volunteers, and
the community that came out to support Fuqua
School. We thank you all so much!

FALCONFEST AUCTION
Spring at Fuqua School is welcomed with the
Alumni Easter Egg Hunt, the blooming of the
grounds, and Falconfest, which continues to
be one of our largest fundraising efforts. More
than 100 business and individuals make
contributions to our annual auction and yard
sale…as a result, great bargains are to be
found! This event is open to the community,
and folks come from all over to join in the fun
and adventure of bargain-seeking. The event,
held March 24, 2012, raised $32,000 for our
school. Ned Collier, our auctioneer for the
day, enhanced the atmosphere with fun and
excitement, and we truly appreciate his time
and energy. We could not have had the
success we did without the tremendous
efforts of Green Front Furniture and Green
Front Accessories, who bent over backwords
to make many road trips picking up and
delivering furniture and other items for the
auction. Thank you to all who helped make
this event such a success.

Falcons is a FREE program
designed to introduce families to

2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month.
Activities include story time, games,
crafts, music, snacks and much more.
This program is held at the Lower
School. All are welcome!
NEW FAMILY REFERRAL PROGRAM
Step 1
Complete and submit
a New Family Referral
Form with information
on a great prospective
family for the 2013-14
school year. Only refer
a family with whom
you have a personal
relationship as we will
be requesting your
assistance in
introducing this family
to Fuqua School.
Step 2
Working with you, we
will determine the best
way to approach your
referred family;
however, you will be
expected to actively
participate.
Step 3
We will keep you
apprised of progress, i.e.,
when the family is
coming to visit, when
application is made,
when accepted, etc.
Step 4
Once your referral signs
an enrollment agreement
for the 2013-14 school
year and is accepted you
will receive a $500 credit
toward your child’s 201314 tuition, which will be
applied to your balance.*
Step 5
Feel great about
helping to bring a new
family to Fuqua School
AND enjoy your tuition
credit!
THE FINE PRINT ~ REFERRAL PROGRAM
All current Fuqua School families and faculty/staff are eligible to participate
in the New Family Referral Program.
There is no limit to the number of families you may refer. (Aim for
attending Fuqua School for free next year!)
If more than one Fuqua School family submits a New Family Referral Form
for the same new family, only the first family to submit the form (by date
and time) will be eligible to receive the tuition credit.
*The $500 tuition credit is per new family enrolled. If your child is
graduating from Fuqua School in May 2013, or if you are a Fuqua
employee with no children attending Fuqua School, you will receive $500
cash per new family enrolled.
We will need your assistance during the admission process, so your help
does not stop after you make the referral.
If your referred family applies but is not accepted by Fuqua School, we will
let you know as early in the process as possible, but only after we have
notified the applicant. We cannot guarantee that your referral will be
accepted to Fuqua School.
All questions regarding the New Family Referral Program should be
directed to the Director of Admissions.
