At his final press conference of the week, head coach Jim Tressel said all the typical starters will be ready for action as the Buckeyes hit the road for what figures to be their toughest game away from home so far this season. Those receiving clean bills of health included sophomore tight end Jake Stoneburner, junior left tackle Mike Adams, junior right tackle J.B. Shugarts and junior quarterback Terrelle Pryor. The last name on that list would likely be of primary concern among Buckeye fans. After suffering a strained left quadriceps Oct. 2 during OSU’s road win against Illinois, Pryor did not attempt to rush the ball the following weekend against Indiana. Afterward, he said he did not want to push himself if he could avoid doing so in order to be ready for the Badgers. Speaking with reporters Wednesday night, Pryor said he is about as healthy as he could expect at the midway point of the season. “Whatever plays we call, that’s what I’m going to do,” he said. Asked how the quad feels compared to a week ago, Pryor replied simply, “It’s good.” Asked if he has run at top speed since suffering the injury, he said he did not last week because it was still tender. He added that the coaches had a good passing plan for the contest against the Hoosiers so he would not have to push the muscle. Offensive coordinator Jim Bollman said he was not concerned about the injury, saying Pryor could do everything they might ask him this weekend. “We’re not going in worried that he’s not going to be able to do this or that,” Bollman said. But when directly asked, Pryor said not being 100 percent healthy will not prevent him from helping lead the Buckeyes. “Anytime you get injured, you’re never 100 percent,” he said. “I’d be lying if I told you that. It’s enough to carry as much as I have to carry the ball and do what I have to do to try to help the team win.” So will Pryor be able to run the ball like he has in the past? Given what is at nine passes for 110 yards and a touchstake for the Buckeyes, the junior said down. He was replaced by sophomore he will do everything he can Saturday Reid Fragel, who has six catches for 60 yards but is more prominently featured night. “I think in these ballgames that you as a blocker. Tressel said that no one else on the “I don’t know that he could go 60 plays, but I think he’ll be able to give us team has come down with the virus that some duty (this weekend),” Tressel said. Adams had. “I teased him a little bit on Tuesday In four games, Stoneburner has caught JOSH WINSLOW SET FOR SHOWDOWN – Junior right tackle J.B. Shugarts (76) missed most of the Indiana game with a foot injury but should be good to go against Wisconsin. This Week At OSU afternoon when he was in our team meeting and at practice,” Tressel said Thursday. “I said, ‘Wait a minute. You didn’t get the most important part of your day – the press conference.’ He practiced both days and he’ll go today.” The trip represents Ohio State’s third straight prime-time appearance at Camp Randall Stadium. The Buckeyes dropped a 17-10 decision there in 2003 and rallied for a 20-17 win in 2008. “The first time there I would describe as rainy and wet but physical and tough and electric,” Tressel said of the 2003 game. “Then the second time we were there was a little bit Corey earlier in the season and it was electric. You could just feel the energy in the place, but on the field there was a lot of hitting going on. “I guess regardless of the weather, it’s a physical place.” That should mean a bigger role for junior linebacker Andrew Sweat as the Buckeyes figure to primarily utilize their base defense. When OSU goes to the nickel, Sweat comes off the field for an extra defensive back. “We’ve been facing all spread-out teams and very few two-back teams,” Tressel said. “I’ll bet you we’ve been in nickel more than 70 percent (of the time), so Andrew has got to step up.” As OSU looks to control the line of scrimmage, Tressel said a few running backs will likely get carries in this contest including reserves Jordan Hall and Jaamal Berry. “It wouldn’t shock me if they got to carry the ball from the line of scrimmage in this game,” the coach said. Senior Brandon Saine has taken on more of a wide receiver role as the season has gone on and did not take any handoffs last weekend against the Hoosiers. As a reporter was pointing out that Saine’s role as a running back was diminishing, a wry Tressel said, “That’s just a smoke screen, but go ahead.” Brown Moves, Smith Redshirts One night after safeties coach Paul Haynes denied that redshirt freshman cornerback Corey Brown had been moved to safety, Tressel confirmed that such a move had indeed taken place. “We think long-term he’s probably going to be able to help us there,” Tressel Oct. 15, 2010 said. “Short-term, we’re thin in both places so he can be that versatile guy, that utility guy that can play corner if we need him and he can play safety if we need him. I think (safeties coach) Paul Haynes thinks long-term that’s probably going to suit him well. “He’s got great range and is really smart. You have to do a lot of things when you’re in there. I would say for this season he’s going to be available for us for both but we’ll see what happens down the road.” Brown had been serving as senior Chimdi Chekwa’s backup and was viewed as the team’s No. 4 cornerback. He Brown has recorded five tackles this season. Tressel also confirmed that freshman running back Roderick Smith will take a redshirt this season after missing fall camp while waiting an NCAA clearinghouse ruling on his academic status. Smith is a four-star prospect out of Fort Wayne (Ind.) Paul Harding. BSB Quickly 3 Quickly Oct. 15, 2010 Publisher ........... Frank Moskowitz Asst. Publisher ..... Becky Roberts Managing Editor ............Mark Rea Staff Writers Adam Jardy Marcus Hartman Jeff Svoboda Designer/Staff Writer Matthew Hager Not Worried About Holmes Tressel is not worried about a Sports Illustrated article claiming that former OSU receiver Santonio Holmes may have accepted money and gifts from an agent while a member of the Buckeyes. In the article, an agent said he met with Holmes outside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and approached him about becoming his agent. Holmes allegedly then replied that he had already been taking gifts for years and would not need his services. Tressel said he has not spoken with Holmes since the article was made public but that wide receivers coach Darrell Hazell had. “We wanted to get hold of him right away,” Tressel said. “He’s made some statements, but even his statements to Darrell obviously put our mind at ease. You’re always concerned when anything is brought up.” Holmes has denied what was included in the SI article. Tressel said he had not discussed the issue with his current team because he wants focus placed on this weekend’s road contest against Wisconsin Photographers Sonny Brockway Kevin Dye Josh Winslow Editorial Office Columbus Sports Publications 1350 W. Wisconsin’s O-Line Having faced the mammoth Wisconsin offensive line for three years in a row, Ohio State defensive tackle Dexter Larimore knows how immense the Badgers are. “They probably average like, I don’t know, 7-2 or something and like 400 pounds,” he said. “They’re unbelievable. I don’t know where they get them.” Although that was a bit of an exaggeration, Larimore knows the big men of Wisconsin are among the biggest he’ll face each season. The Badgers’ listed starting five up front ranges from center Peter Konz – no midget at 6-5, 313 pounds – to giant left tackle Gabe Carimi (6-7, 327). The Badgers will also line up 318pound offensive lineman Bill Nagy at tight end and occasionally put 307-pound lineman Ryan Groy at fullback. That size presents its own set of problems. “When you start talking about doubleteams, you start talking 640-plus pounds coming at you,” Larimore said. “The problem is they’re very good. It’s not that they’re these huge, mammoth, tree guys and they’re not good.” Add in 248-pound masher John Clay at tailback – and a nice change-of-pace back in 198-pound James White – and the Badgers yet again have one of the best rushing offenses in the Big Ten. Their mark of 240.8 yards per contest is second in the league and 11th in the NCAA. Schematically, they do it with pulling guards, down blocking and cutback lanes, putting a premium on defensive line play. If the OSU linemen are active and get off blocks, they can help the linebackers, who will be counted on to make sure tackles with a minimum of interference. Ohio State, meanwhile, enters with the fourth-best rushing defense in the country, but senior end Cameron Heyward knows the Badgers are a different animal. “Going back to the ’08 game, I just watched that the other day,” Heyward said, “and they kicked our butts on the defensive line.” Key Matchup/Predict BSB Staff Predictions Matthew Hager Designer/ Staff Writer Marcus Hartman Staff Writer Last week against Indiana, Ohio State proved it could stop a high-octane passing attack. This week I expect the Buckeyes’ defense to show it can do the same against a power rushing team in Wisconsin. Winning a game at Camp Randall – at night no less – is never easy, but I expect Ohio State to leave a hostile environment in Madison with its seventh win. Wisconsin boasts a formidable one-two punch with running backs John Clay and James White. That duo will try to overcome a long line of recent successes Ohio State has had against the run. It has been 29 games since a running back rushed for 100 yards in a game against the Buckeyes. USC tailback Joe McKnight was the last to do so, rushing for 105 yards on 12 carries in Los Angeles in 2008. UW will probably find some success on the ground, but look for Ohio State’s defensive line to pressure Scott Tolzien into mistakes that will create turnovers for the Buckeyes. Terrelle Pryor is clearly better than he was on his last trip to Wisconsin, and the Badgers have looked sloppy on defense in some of their games. Because this game is in Madison at night, the Buckeyes won’t blow out the Badgers, but this Wisconsin team is not as good as recent versions. This UW squad may have a 5-1 record but should have lost to Arizona State and certainly didn’t look like a conference title contender in its loss at Michigan State. Prior to the season, I looked at Wisconsin and Iowa as two legitimate challengers for Ohio State’s Big Ten crown. While the Hawkeyes have another five weeks to prepare for their visit from the Buckeyes, now is the time for the Badgers and I don’t think they’re ready. The Wisconsin offensive line does a good job making room for burly running back John Clay and quicksilver backup James White, so the onus is on quarterback Scott Tolzien to avoid mistakes such as the two interceptions he threw last year that were returned for OSU touchdowns. His wide receiver corps is solid, and tight end Lance Kendricks looks like a real asset in both the passing and running game, but Tolzien must protect the ball better than he did last year against high-level competition. That’s especially true with the Badgers’ defense not looking as formidable as the ’09 version. End J.J. Watt is one of the conference’s best, but otherwise the unit is short on playmakers. The OSU receivers should keep their heads on a swivel with hard-hitting safeties Aaron Henry and Jay Valai patrolling the secondary, but there should be plays to be made in the passing game, and I believe Terrelle Pryor and his pals will be happy to take advantage. Final Score Final Score 31 31 21 14 Oct. 15, 2010 Key Matchup/Predict BSB Quickly 5 BSB Staff Predictions Adam Jardy Staff Writer Mark Rea Managing Editor Jeff Svoboda Staff Writer To me, this game will be won or lost by Ohio State’s offensive line. We have heard all year that the Buckeyes can run the ball but they simply choose not to. I’m not sure they will be able to win solely by throwing the ball, which means they will have to pick up key yards on the ground. I expect the Badgers to find tough sledding in their running attack, but I do think they will make some plays and pick up some yards. For OSU to win, it will have to do the same. The physical state of J.B. Shugarts has to be cause for concern here, but Andrew Norwell has been praised as a road grader and could prove his worth in that area if called upon. Eliminating turnovers will be another key, particularly for Wisconsin quarterback Scott Tolzien. The Buckeyes were able to harass him into making mistakes last season, which means stopping the run game and forcing Tolzien to beat you through the air becomes even more critical. OSU’s Terrelle Pryor has looked confident and in command to this point of the season, and he has had previous success at Camp Randall. I expect him to have all his weapons at his disposal and for him to be the reason the Buckeyes pull this one out. It might not be pretty or decisive, but this is the type of game where Pryor proves himself the leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy. Ranked conference foes playing a night game in a rowdy stadium in front of a raucous crowd as well as a nationwide television audience – this much hype is usually reserved for games featuring national championship contenders. With all due respect to the Badgers, however, they are more pretender than contender. Regardless of what ESPN might try to tell you, there are really only two main storylines here: (1) Can Wisconsin’s one-two punch of John Clay and James White run on Ohio State’s defense; and (2) Can the Badgers stop Terrelle Pryor from piling up huge numbers through the air? The Clay-White combo is a two-headed monster that has combined for 1,177 yards and 17 touchdowns this season, and that computes to a six-game average of nearly 200 yards and almost three TDs per game. Meanwhile, the Buckeyes haven’t allowed a 100-yard rusher since early 2008 and this year’s defense ranks a formidable No. 4 nationally against the run. Talk about the irresistible force meeting the immovable object. It is a battle in which the Badgers must gain an advantage if they entertain any hopes of winning the game. That is because they have almost no chance of stopping Pryor through the air if the Ohio State QB continues to perform as he has most of this season. The Badgers have given up 518 yards and six touchdowns through the air in their last two games, and that is likely where this game will be won. I will admit this contest gives me a fair share of concern. Two seasons ago, I was very confident in Ohio State’s chances going into Madison to face the Badgers. Yet, as most people remember, the Buckeyes needed a late touchdown drive led by freshman Terrelle Pryor to escape with a 20-17 victory over what turned out to be a fairly mediocre Wisconsin team. That game cemented in my head the idea that it’s tough to win in Camp Randall Stadium no matter how good the Badgers are. At least in my life, since Barry Alvarez took a moribund program and turned it into a consistent winner, the Buckeyes have had to fight tooth and nail to get victories on the shores of Lake Mendota, and sometimes they’ve fallen short. And while this Ohio State team rolls into Madison undefeated and ranked No. 1, that’s another reason for worry. There’s little doubt that Wisconsin’s usually fervent crowd will step it up another notch with the best team in the nation coming to town, and the late start will give them plenty of time to get ready. So, to be honest, my gut says there’s a very good chance Wisconsin will upset the Buckeyes and get a victory. But I’ve said all year this Ohio State team has a different feel to it, one of not only competence but confidence. If any team can go into the toughest venue in the Big Ten, overcome the adversity and get a win, it’s the Buckeyes. Final Score Final Score Final Score 24 13 41 17 28 23 6 BSB Quickly Oct. 15, 2010 Recruiting Update Several Schools Still On Jennings’ List By Adam Jardy Ohio State might not seem like a player for Darius Jennings, but that sentiment could be true for any of the teams recruiting the four-star athlete from Baltimore Gilman. In an Oct. 10 interview with Scout.com, Jennings said he still has a list of 10 schools that he is not paying much attention to as he goes through his senior season. Making up that list are UCLA, Ohio State, Boston College, Connecticut, Pittsburgh, Penn State, Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest in no particular order. “I don’t have a leader out of these schools – that’s just really hard to say because I haven’t been thinking about it or letting it consume my time,” he said. “I’m just trying to stay focused on enjoying my senior season.” However, Jennings said the three schools that seem to be recruiting him hardest are Maryland, Virginia and UCLA. The only school Jennings said he is sure he will officially visit will be UCLA. “At this point I really have no idea where I’ll go for the other four visits,” he said. “I think I should have a top five by the end of this month though. And by then, hopefully I can start to schedule my official visits.” The 5-11, 175-pound athlete is rated the No. 15 wide receiver in the nation but plays a number of positions in high school. As a junior, he rushed for 2,028 yards and 25 touchdowns and also passed for 748 yards and 10 touchdowns. Through six games this season, Jennings said he’s rushed for 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns, passed for 250 yards and a touchdown and also returned two kicks and one punt for touchdowns. Every one of his final 10 teams is either looking at him to play wide receiver or cornerback. Perryman Claims Offer Add a new name to OSU’s recruiting radar. In an interview with Scout, four-star linebacker Denzel Perryman claims a scholarship offer from the Buckeyes. The 5-11, 220-pound athlete from Coral Gables (Fla.) Senior said he favors Miami (Fla.), Florida State, Florida, LSU and Alabama but that OSU, Mississippi and Notre Dame have made recent charges in his mind. 2011 OSU Verbal Commitments Name Pos Ht/Wt Michael Bennett Brian Bobek Tommy Brown Chris Carter Jeremy Cash Chase Farris DerJuan Gambrell Joel Hale Ken Hayes Jeff Heuerman Braxton Miller Steve Miller Devin Smith Evan Spencer Ron Tanner Antonio Underwood Nick Vannett DL C OT OG S DT CB DT DE TE QB DE WR WR S OG TE 6-3/275 6-2½/278 6-5/300 6-4/325 6-2/190 6-6/270 6-2/180 6-5/295 6-5/255 6-5/230 6-3½/199 6-4/230 6-1/175 6-1/185 6-1/190 6-3/295 6-6/230 Stars School Centerville, Ohio Palatine (Ill.) He said he plans to take all five of his official visits and he knows where some of them will go. “I will for sure end up going to LSU, Florida and Alabama – it’s going to be a toss-up between the rest of the schools I’m considering,” he said. “I’ll probably start setting up some dates for my officials after the football season.” Through five games this season, Perryman said he has recorded around 60 tackles, two sacks and an interception. The Buckeyes do not have verbal commitments from any linebackers for the class of 2011. He is also showing interest in Michigan State after having camped there during the summer and was in the house Oct. 2 to see the host Spartans defeat Wisconsin. Cincinnati, North Carolina and West Virginia are also showing early interest. Class Update The Buckeyes are tied with Alabama for the No. 2 recruiting class in the nation according to Scout’s rankings. Using a complex formula that takes into account addressing positions of need as well as quality of commitments, OSU and Alabama have 3,230 points for their classes of 2011. Both the Buckeyes and Crimson Tide trail Texas by a wide margin. The Longhorns have 4,771 points and 23 verbal commitments. Alabama has 19 players in its class.
