Mission Statement/Brief History
The Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte opened in 2011 with a single, prevailing belief:
healing happens together. With that ideal in mind, our house has served as a home away
from home, allowing families to stay close by the side of their sick or injured child. With
nowhere else to turn, these families rely on the RMH of Charlotte to support them in
their time of need.

Side Side
by
Imagine the heartache and worry of having a sick or injured child
in the hospital. Now imagine how tough it would be to be far away
from home, struggling to ensure that your child gets the best care
possible. This unimaginable situation is one that families are going
through when they come to the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte
While many families reside right here in North Carolina, some
travel incredible distances to get care for their children in Charlotte.
Some are with us for only a few days, while others fight long battles
from within our walls. The reasons for their stays vary from
premature births to tough and never-ending battles with cancer.
But they all share one thing: the desire to stay by their child’s side,
healing together.
John & Britley Carter
Morganton, NC
The Ronald McDonald House is often referred to as “The House That Love Built.” Despite the trying circumstances in which we meet,
families leave the house feeling surrounded by love. Through the dark times, we stand with them as they stand with their sick or
injured children.
All of this love is made possible by you. You happily donate your time, ensuring our House continues to run smoothly. You share your
talents with our guests, who are in desperate need of a distraction. And you help raise the funds to keep our welcoming doors open.
Your dedication, your generosity, your time. These are the feelings of love our guests feel surrounded by. You are the foundation of “The
House that Love Built.”
With love,

House Operations Volunteers
The Heart
of the House
Our House Operations Volunteers are our behind the scenes warriors; heroes who wear their capes in the front.
Behind every successful day in the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte stands this small army of dedicated,
compassionate men and women in red aprons. Their identities are no secret: They are the local community;
champions of love and hope who have made the commitment to spend at least 3 hours a month in the House,
working with our guest families. From 18 to 80, deep into careers or well into retirement, they work with smiles,
enthusiasm, and a genuine concern for the health and happiness of our guests.
These House Operations Volunteers create the welcoming environment that makes our house feel like home
to families in distress. These mothers, fathers, brothers, and sisters are battling with one of the toughest
experiences of their lives, and our volunteers know that even the smallest gestures can have a big impact on
the spirits of these struggling families.
From answering phones and greeting visitors at the front, to cleaning rooms and helping with administrative
tasks, our HOVs keep the house running and support our guests throughout every aspect of their stay. They
give tours to new families, stock pantries, and write thank you notes for donors. They organize donations,
sweep porches, and put together puzzles with heartsick children. They put a face on the RMH of Charlotte that
we are proud to share with all of our guests.

and creative minds at Tattoo Projects.

information, visit www.tattooprojects.com.
Little Architects
Building a house as large as ours is a monumental task, so we were relieved when Little
Diversified Architectural Consulting took this great burden off of our shoulders. They
designed our House from the ground up, gifting us with a beautiful space that welcomes
our guests. Since then, they also designed an expansive parking lot and pristine memorial
garden—all pro bono! Little’s charitable spirit goes beyond their expertise. They continue to
volunteer in our House, and participate in “Sport a Shirt, Share a Night.”
Thank you, Little Diversified Architectural Consulting, for designing us a home with the same
love that enters our doors every day. Little Diversified Architectural Consulting is an international
architecture and design firm with proficiency in land development, CAFM and occupancy planning,
branded graphics, building technology applications, and digital media services. Little is recognized
for developing exceptional design solutions that generate business results in the workplace, community,
healthcare, and retail industries.

Feature Family
“We met Amy during a rainstorm on our trip to the wild Masai Mara, where we took Mayian to watch the
great Wildebeest migration!”
My name is Catherine Mpaayai and I came to Charlotte with my son all the way from Kenya. I could not have imagined the amazing
experience that was in store for us at the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte.
This journey really began 12 years ago, with my first-born son. Mayian was born prematurely and suffered brain damage that resulted in
cerebral palsy. The effects of cerebral palsy vary widely from person to person; in Mayian’s case they left him wheelchair bound and unable to
care for himself.
In my community the disabled are shunned. In the African culture there is a stigma attached to their conditions. The lack of support in Kenya
for the mentally and physically disabled compelled us to open our own support center, Therapies for Kids Kenya. We offer physical,
occupational, and speech therapies to our son and many others with special needs.
Through our support center, I met Amy Sturkey, a physical therapist with Child & Family Development in North Carolina. Amy was impressed
my family didn’t let Mayian’s disability hold him back from experiencing all that life has to offer. In fact, we met Amy during a rainstorm on our
trip to the wild Masai Mara, where we took Mayian to watch the great Wildebeest migration! I told Amy, “Where we go, Mayian goes.” I advise
parents not to hide their disabled children away in their homes, but to bring them out in public so that society will learn to accept them.
After meeting Amy, she repeatedly encouraged us to visit her in North Carolina to seek specialized therapy for Mayian. I resisted because of the
costs. Airfare, accommodations, and medical fees alone were beyond my means. Finally, in 2013, through the grace of God and the assistance
of friends, we managed to raise enough money to make the trip with Mayian and a therapist.
Never deterred, Amy brought us to the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte to see if there was an opening. Our prayers were answered, and
the House welcomed us in with open arms. I was overwhelmed with emotion. But mostly, I was overwhelmed by the love and care of these
complete strangers.
The rooms in the House would pass for a five-star hotel in my country! It was like a fairy tale. I couldn’t stop thinking, “What is the catch here,
these people are not even asking us to pay first.” All the guests lived in the house like one large family, and the volunteers were always so
helpful and friendly. They all looked so content and happy working with RMHof Charlotte. It was not easy staying away from my husband and
two little children for so long, but the computers in the library allowed me to Skype with them. I loved the library and spent a lot of quiet time
there after Mayian went to bed.
We were never asked for payment for all the comfort we enjoyed, and because of the savings, we were able to afford an extra two weeks of
therapy for Mayian. Thank you so much!
My biggest lesson from the Ronald Mcdonald House of Charlotte was that it is possible to love unconditionally and to give your all for what you
believe in. The people of RMH of Charlotte exemplified God’s message: “I will not take you where I will not be with you.”
The day we left RMH of Charlotte, I cried. I felt like I was leaving my home and the people who I’ve grown to love so much.
I miss all of you so much.

4th Annual Girl’s Night Out
Presented by the Isabella Santos Foundations
Raised $97,242-500 Attendees
This year the soiree was grander than ever! Over 500 women
experienced a night of glamour and giving at The Fillmore in Charlotte.
Our generous socialites enjoyed hors d’oeurves and cocktails while
benefiting the families of sick and injured children. Guests networked,
browsed silent auctions, and watched a fashion show starring mothers
who had previously stayed at the RMH of Charlotte. The stories of
these mothers were shared as they modeled attire from local boutiques
and strutted their stuff. What a fun way to support our cause.

5th Annual Sport a Shirt, Share a Night
Raised $109,006-34,000 Shirts Sold
118 teams from Charlotte participated in this anticipated
event in support of the Ronald McDonald House of
Charlotte. All of these businesses designated April 26th as
a statewide casual Friday, encouraging their employees to
don our shirts for this worthy endeavor. By “sporting” a $10
shirt, employees at these companies helped “share” with a
family the cost of one night’s stay at the RMH of Charlotte.
We will never refuse a family for the inability to pay, but this
event helps us share the burden of those costs.

2nd Annual Young Professionals Red Tie Gala
Presented by Red Ventures and CohnReznick
Raised $87,996
Who says charity events can’t be high-class? This year, we
got dressed up to the nines for our second annual Red Tie
Gala. This charitable night of elegance was created, planned,
and implemented by the Young Professionals Society, a group
of 22-39 year olds who share their time, talents, and finances
with the RMH of Charlotte.
More than 325 friends of the House met at Founder’s Hall for
dinner, drinks, and some lively camaraderie. Revelers enjoyed a
live DJ while munching on hors d’oeurves and sipping cocktails,
all while raising money for families in need.

3rd Annual Red Shoe Shootout
Presented by Technekes and McDonald’s
Raised $31,060
Supporters were armed and generous this year at the Fork Farm
in Norwood, NC. At our third annual charity shoot, 72 participants
took aim at benefiting the RMH of Charlotte by testing their mettle
against old and new friends.
Shooters arrived to a McDonald’s breakfast, and enjoyed a
home-cooked lunch courtesy of Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q before setting
out on the course to open fire on 12 challenging shooting stations.
This day of friendly competition culminated in an award ceremony
luncheon recognizing our sharpest shooters.
