2013-14 WELCOME TO THE WALDORF SCHOOL OF PHILADELPHIA We are a vibrant learning community that integrates the intellectual with the artistic and the practical with the beautiful, fostering the ability to engage fully in the world. Everything we do is based on a deep understanding of the developing child and focused on creating citizens of the world who possess a life-long love of learning. We achieve our mission by: a life-long love of learning • Applying the innovative educational philosophy and curriculum of Rudolf Steiner in a contemporary context • Upholding the highest standards of excellence and integrity in academics, the arts and human relationships • Honoring and valuing each child and his or her unique gifts • Cultivating dynamic working relationships with and among the faculty, the board, the administration and the community of families • Fostering a culture that welcomes and honors diversity of all kinds • Committing to the stewardship of nature in an urban setting 3 Dear Waldorf School of Philadelphia Family and Friends, Volunteering within our school and giving to our Annual Fund brings our whole community to a place where we can meet each other in meaningful ways. As Rudolf Steiner once said: In the 2013-2014 school year, our students continued to flourish. We take great pride watching our students grow up from early childhood through the grades with support from their classmates and the deep understanding, compassion and respect they receive from their class teacher and school community. It was a year of exciting changes, including new opportunities for the middle school sports programs to grow. Girls and boys basketball and coed softball have become the teams to beat against other local independent schools. Thanks to our amazing coaching staff and games teacher, the students shone in their commitment to collaboration and healthy competition. Our new home in Germantown has brought fervor and excitement to everyone in the school community. Students and parents alike are inspired by our beautiful new campus with completely renovated buildings. We are so excited to inject new life into these historic buildings and fill them with children, laughter and wonder. While this is a monumental year for our school, we also have our sights set on our future. Our goals include: • Strengthening our communication to further support transparency and community involvement • Creating more opportunities for a wider, more diverse community to witness the strength of our middle school curriculum • Developing more parent education programs and social events to keep us all connected We are eternally grateful to everyone for their generosity. It is only with your support that we are able to begin a new era at our new home at 6000 Wayne Avenue. We look forward to continually sharing our enthusiasm with you and the many friends of The Waldorf School of Philadelphia. Sincerely, 4 Kerry Hoffman Barbara Hogue School Chair President, Board of Trustees May love grow within me May strength penetrate me So that in me may arise A helper to all humanity A servant to all that is holy, selfless and true. 5 admissions highlights This year the admissions office received many inquiries from families across the country and around After almost 100 years, Waldorf the world, including Brazil, Mexico and Israel. This global interest speaks to what Henry Barnes Education remains the most refreshing described as Waldorf Education’s “universal and unique” philosophy and culture. Relocating families independent school movement of share a common goal of finding a familiar and uninterrupted education and a welcoming, likeminded school community. Of course, not all inquiries are from current Waldorf families. Many are our time. It has the capacity to ignite from families who are discovering Waldorf Education for the very first time, which is a true testament a sense of shared global community to our school’s growing appeal as we expand our reach into the greater Philadelphia community. The growing interest in The Waldorf School of Philadelphia reflects our increased social media efforts. This year we also hosted a number of noteworthy outreach events, including the third annual Whispering Wood Pop-Up Shop, which took the form of a national juried art exhibit. To coincide with and the potential to cross boundaries of geography, nationality and ethnicity like no other educational philosophy. the art exhibit, we hosted a Waldorf Alumni Reception, bringing together new interested families and our welcoming alumni community. Enrollment at The Waldorf School of Philadelphia continued to grow this year with waitlists becoming the norm for many classes, especially for the nursery, early childhood program and the lower grades. Annual enrollment growth for the year was 8% and attrition was 4%. Growing at this pace while maintaining the enrollment of current families in our community is a blessing. Further, of those who the rich tapestry of our community left our school, many relocated to fellow Waldorf schools in their new neighborhoods, proving the draw of Waldorf Education runs deep. We are so proud to see The Waldorf School of Philadelphia become the first choice for a growing number of families. Our school is receiving the recognition it deserves for providing a substantive academic curriculum, inspiring creative thinking and a genuine love of learning. 6 7 alumni journeys We take great pride in our alumni at the Waldorf School of Philadelphia. By keeping in touch with our students after they leave, we are able to see how they apply their education and blossom outside our doors. WSP graduates attend a diverse range of high schools, colleges and universities after graduation and are part of a unique network of talented Waldorf alumni from around the world. High schools include: Colleges and universities include: • Academy of the New Church • Arcadia University • Reed College • Central High School • University of the Arts • Temple University • Cheltenham High School • Drexel University • Tulane University • Doane Academy • Emerson College • University of Pittsburgh • Edward R. This fundraising bike ride brought together nearly 80 bike riders of all ages to ride in memory of one of our school’s beloved parents, the late Lewis duPont Smith, father to Martha Anne (‘14), Claire (‘17), and Sarah (‘20). The most memorable moment of the ride came through the words given by Andrea Smith, Lewis’ wife, to open the event and the ringing of the school bell by his daughters to begin the ride. of looking more outwardly from our school buildings to open our community up to the wider world beyond our doors. We created a new annual community building and fundraising event — a bike ride that couples the love for the outdoors and riding with our love for our school to honor the memory of one remarkable parent. This year we cast the net widely so that we could reach far beyond our own parents, students, faculty and staff. There is something for everyone with a 5-mile or 25-mile route through the lovely Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. Our weary riders could even treat themselves to drinks from the smoothie-making bike after they’ve completed the ride. We look forward to the growth of the ridership and funds raised in future years. Holiday Fair As a school community we are always excited to host our annual Holiday Fair and Craft Bazaar. It is the time when the entire school comes together — faculty, staff, students and parents — in order to transform our buildings into a magical space for many to enjoy. This year we creatively made space for 33 wonderful vendors, including our eighth grade who wowed everyone with their wares — handmade crayons, hand dyed silks, hand painted greeting cards, and the first-ever WSP hoodies, which flew off the shelf. Countless candles were dipped, jump ropes turned, faces painted and apples pressed. So much fun was had by all who attended, especially those who were seeing Waldorf Education for the first time simply by stopping by to shop. Auction We dined, we sipped, we danced, and most importantly, we bid! Our annual auction has proven to be a great success for the second year in a row. After years of hosting this fundraising event every other year, we decided that it was due time to host the event annually due to its success at raising funds and building community. Increased attendance and funds raised are definitely indications of the success of our growth, but the most profound marker is the fun that was had and the memories we made. 10 11 life at waldorf festivals & events The Whispering Wood and Alumni Exhibition This year, we partnered two of our favorite events — the Whispering Wood Pop-Up Shop and the Waldorf Alumni Gathering — for a whole new experience. We hosted a national juried art exhibit, inviting Waldorf artists from across the country to submit their work. Over 100 entries were received and 21 finalists were selected. This drew together over 120 Waldorf graduates from 11 different Waldorf schools. It was a wonderful weekend to celebrate Waldorf Education and connect current students and alumni with prospective parents and students. May Faire After months of shorter days, our entire school community welcomes spring during our May Faire celebration. Held each year on the second Saturday in May, this event is a great time to break out the picnic blankets and enjoy your fellow families and classmates. Always a hit are the special touches that make May Faire so memorable — face painting, hand kites, crown-making and dancing around the May Pole. Our littlest children wind their way around the pole, following the lead of a teacher, while the grades students dance with more purpose and form, following the footsteps of a timeless traditional May Faire dance. This is always a great event to enjoy music and the outdoors, meet other parents, make new friends and get to know your teachers even more. Festivals Celebrations and festivals inspired by nature, fables, culture and history create a special time at all Waldorf schools. Michaelmas opens the year with a slaying of dragons, fortifying students in the middle school, especially the eighth graders, and prepares them for the growth that lay ahead in the school year. Dia de los Muertos brings the grade school together to honor the spirit of those who have passed. During our darkest and coldest months, Martinmas opens up a season of lightgiving events. This continues with the Garden of Light, marking the start of Advent and Chanukah, with the lighting of the menorah. The season comes to a close with Santa Lucia’s crown of candles that visits each classroom, bringing enlightenment to all of the students. A culmination of a year of hard work for the fifth grade results in the annual Pentathalon, when the fifth grade classes of surrounding Waldorf Schools come together to compete, learn, and have fun. 12 13 a home of our own This year’s launch of our Double Benefit Campaign was successful thanks to all your help. Our developer agreed to deduct every dollar contributed to this campaign from the total purchase price of the property, and he will also spread out the money raised over the tenyear term of our lease, so that we end up saving each month. In 10 years, this will be a true home of our own. You’ve helped us grow an even stronger community. thank you for your generous support 14 15 our community Cynthia Way, 4th Grade Cristina Shiffman, 5th Grade Board of Trustees Executive Committee
