6 Vegetative
Petunias
Vegetative annuals continue to increase in market
share. While growing seed produced items either directly
from seed or plugs is generally more economical, the
trend has definitely shifted in the direction of vegetative
annuals, perennials and herbs. Vegetative products allow
you more creativity in your product line and merchandising. A good balance between both seed and vegetatively
produced products is the smart practice for most growers.
Pages 6-23 focus on vegetative varieties offered in our
liner program that are certain to add to your bottom line.

Foliage
Foliage, Foliage, and more Foliage!
Variations in color and texture unite!
Foliage is a fully established component in garden design with good reason. Foliage varieties lend calming
complements to color saturated gardens and containers, making them perfect as accent plants. Used in landscapes on its own, or as a component in combination plantings, foliage lends that final touch to garden artistry.
Consider any of the following top selling foliage classes when creating your season product line up.
● Ipomoea
Commonly known as Sweet Potato
Vine, these rambling foliage plants
are often used in combination planters where their foliar hue brings out
the color of their flowering companions. Most popular varieties are
Marguerite (chartreuse) and Blackie
(dark maroon), but there are tons
of other options. Grown by all our
suppliers.
● Coleus
Sun tolerant coleus varieties lead
the way for this popular genus, with
a wide selection of varieties that
perform from full shade to full sun.
A diversity of leaf colors and shapes
await you! Grown by all our suppliers.
● Dracaena Spike
Our top selling single foliage variety! This workhorse is almost taken
for granted these days, but it’s a
grower’s staple. In combo container
production, its arching 24” leaf habit
lends height and accent to colorful
containers. Grown by Raker, Four
Star, Pleasant View, Mast, Barone.
● Grasses
Ornamental grasses add soothing
color and texture in landscape situations. They are also popular choices
for large containers or combined with
flowering annuals in combos. Grown
by all our suppliers.
● Vinca major variegata

containers, lending depth and dimension to finished planters. V. major

stemmed plants that can grow up

Ivy (Hedera) Glacier ●
Ivy is the perfect accent plant, tying
together the elements of a mixed container without overwhelming it.

white highlights. For creamy yellow
and green tones, try Yellow Ripple.

Who wouldn’t be drawn to this unusual foliage plant? The dark metallic
sheen of its purple and silver foliage

grow 18 to 24” tall, in sun or part
shade. Grown by Gro ‘n Sell, Four

Contrast meets compatibility in great combos
The best parties happen when contrast meets compatibility. Blending personalities from calming
to effervescent creates a great get-together that brings out the best in everyone, or in this case,
everything! With combination planters now a main element of garden center sales, the industry has
responded by creating ‘multi-liners’ for growers. This inventive brainchild combines multiple varieties or genera (usually 2-3) in each cell so they can root and grow together. Now plants and growers
both have a head start for wonderfully blended creations.
Multi-liners offer:
•

More natural looking mixtures,
Tested and proven combinations that grow well together,
Less guesswork on the finished product,
Reduced tag cost,
Reduced shipping cost.
Simply order your multi-liners, plant, grow and you’re on your way. Check out the many options

Fresh Vegetables...Healthy Profits!
As a garden center owner, your job is to create sales programs that generate both profits
and customer loyalty. To do that, it’s essential to speak to customers’ interests and
values, and today a primary value is health. Consumers are keenly interested in providing
healthful, safe foods for their families, and your garden center can be central to making
that happen. By providing high quality vegetable plants, intriguing variety choices,
convenient planting options, and knowledgeable staff, you’ll be more than a garden
center. You’ll be a partner in good health. Consider these vegetable marketing tips to
help you “green up” your bottom line:
Traditional Tastes for
Seasoned Gardeners
GRAFTED VEGETABLES
for flavor and performance.
Though growing smaller in numbers, traditional
gardeners are still a significant presence in the
gardening community. They look for tried-andtrue varieties in 6 or 12 packs for planting in
traditional backyard gardens. For these
gardeners, offer classic varieties in abundance.
Innovation & Information
for New-generation Gardeners
What gardeners in their 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s
may lack in gardening experience, they make
up for in enthusiasm. Many seek to garden
organically, so offer them organic plants,
natural fertilizers, and eco-friendly growing
supplies. Explore heirloom and gourmet varieties that offer outstanding flavor or uncommon
color. Finally, be ready to provide growing
instructions, cooking tips, and nutritional
information. Let new-generation gardeners
look to you for answers, and you’ll build your
next generation’s customer base.
Grafted vegetable plants offer the best of
two worlds: heirloom flavor and modern
disease resistance. Heirloom varieties
offer outstanding flavor but are prone
to disease, so they’re grafted onto
modern, highly disease resistant rootstock. The result is success in the garden
and spectacular flavor on the plate.
These naturally supercharged plants
command a higher dollar value than
non-grafted plants, whether offered in
6 inch containers or pre-finished in
decorative 5 gallon containers.
For an assortment of grafted tomatoes,
peppers, and eggplants in 100-cell trays,
see Plug Connection's listing on page
129. Also available are a selection of
grafted tomato assortments and their
new Mighty 2Mato program, featuring 2
varieties per plant!

Harvest-ready Edibles for
Time-crunched Gardeners
As gardeners’ free time shrinks, sales of pre-finished
vegetable containers grow. Consider vegetable
planters that can be placed on a deck and harvested
within a week or two: tomato hanging baskets with
fruit set, patio pots of compact peppers, planters
of colorful salad greens, boxes of ready-to-pick
herbs, and more. Combine vegetables and herbs in
decorative containers to increase appeal and boost
your average sale. If bench space is a problem in
your greenhouse, consider purchasing pre-finished
plants from a wholesale grower.

Taste success with versatile herbs!
Growers tell us that herbs are among their most popular, profitable
edibles. Versatile and easy to maintain, herbs can add fresh flavor to
meals year-round. They also add a touch of beauty wherever they’re
grown: garden beds, windowsills, decks, or patios.
To serve both convenience-minded and do-it-yourself gardeners, offer
herbs in several ways throughout your garden center:
Windowsill Wonderful
Create collections of favorite herbs in decorative
windowsill planters for surefire sales. Windowsill
planters make fresh herbs accessible to everyone
– even apartment dwellers without gardens. They
also make terrific birthday or housewarming gifts.
Choose from rustic, upscale, casual country, or
funky planters, and open the window for sales.
Decorative & Delicious
Herbs bring unmatched flavor and aroma to the
kitchen, but they also make lovely decorative garden
plants in the landscape. Create mixed baskets and
planters of herbs and annual flowers to convey the
ornamental benefits of herbs. Customers will love
that their beautiful landscape plants can also be
easily harvested for use in favorite family recipes.

Creative Combos
Traditional & Tempting
Many gardeners seek to plant their own herb
containers, so offer an ample selection of popular
herbs in 4” or 6” pots. To draw customers in, create
a theme around cooking with herbs. Offer recipes
and “how-to” charts as free handouts, and consider
a cooking demo on a high-traffic weekend. Don’t
forget plant care and growing instructions for the
complete merchandising package.
Inspire your customers by showing that mixed herb
planters can be simply gorgeous. Display large, finished decorative planters with an eye-appealing
variety of herbs ready to harvest. Merchandise
the finished planters to boost your average
sale, and offer the planters and plants
independently for do-it-yourself gardeners.
Marketing Made Easy
To simplify herb marketing, you’ll
find herb collections that come
with point of purchase material,
including colorful plant tags. These
collections have been created in
response to gardener preference, so they
take the guesswork out of variety selection. All you have to do is grow, promote
and sell! Look to Pleasant View and Gro ’n

that will have your cash register singing.

Quick Turn Products
37
Good businesses consistently look for ways to minimize their operating costs,
and it’s no different in our industry. As supply costs continue to fluctuate, many
greenhouse operators are opening their greenhouses later in the season in order
to conserve fuel, labor, fertilizer, and other inputs. The Quick Turn products listed
on this page have been created with this trend in mind. These big liners (or prefinished pots) offer fast finish times, so they are a perfect fit for anyone looking
to open later and turn their bench space quickly. They also make a great fill-in
solution for those “oops!” items that were accidentally left off of your main order.
Here you’ll find a summary of our suppliers’ quick turn product lines.
