Studio 867 Hair Salon To Open in Emlenton
On March 7, 2016, Emlenton will see a new hair salon on Main Street. Lesly
Palmer of Emlenton has
been working hard along
with her mother and father
to open “Studio 867 Hair Salon.”
Lesly, a 2012 graduate of
A-C Valley High School and
Clarion County Career Center, has been cutting and
styling hair ever since. She
has worked at Master Cuts
(Regis Corp.) at the Cranberry Mall and also at
Unique Salon in Clarion.
She says her new hair salon
is geared for the family. She
will cut men, women and
children’s hair and prices
will vary from $14 to $25.
She will also offer perms,
hair coloring, foiling, facial
waxing, conditioning treatment and wedding and
prom styles.-- Lesly says that
her styles will satisfy the
young and old alike and she
will keep up with the new
trends. She will also be using and selling the “Unite”
product line, a luxury professional salon system.
Lesly said she was inspired
while
driving
through Emlenton to put in
her salon. By doing so, she
feels she is doing her part in
helping
rejuvenate
Emlenton’s
downtown.
When you stop in at Studio
867, you will agree Lesly,
along with her mom and
dad, have given the building a nostalgic yet modern
look on the inside. They
have installed new electric
wiring, new walls, new
subflooring and a new lami-
Don Paul
Jewelers
nate floor. The room
is spacious and well lit
and utilizes track-lighting. The drop ceiling
was removed and revealed a wonderful tin
ceiling that was refurbished to its earlier
days---. You will be
pleased with the atmosphere that they
have created for the
hair salon. Lesly says
she pl-ans on being
around for a long
time!
-Studio 867 Hair
Salon’s hours will be
Mondays 2 PM to 6
PM;
Tuesday,
Wednesday
and
Thursday – 2 to 8 PM;
Friday from 4 to 6 PM;

Family, Friends &
Community Raise $15,000
at Kickball Benefit
It’s all thumbs up! Six years
in the making and almost
$34,00 have been raised since
its inception. The annual
Snowball-Kickball Fundraiser
hosted by Vince and Carrie
Forsythe at their home in
St.Petersburg is a great
glimpse of what is good in the
area. People helping people.
Chosen as one of the recipients this year was 4 year old
Tristan Hopkins who was
born with a rare genetic disease called Prune Belly Syndrome. PBS entails underdeveloped or absent abdominal
muscles, urinary abnormalities along with a wide variety
of other complications. Heart
surgery at the age of 2 weeks
and stage 4 chronic kidney
disease.
For Tristan however, it is
all smiles and thumbs up as
he carries on his days with enthusiasm and appreciation
for is life and those around
him. Tristan is an example for
all of us who may be going
through a difficult time or
struggle.
Each year the event is actually jump started at the Parker
Polar Bear Plunge with the
selling of raffle tickets. A Chili
Cook-off also was held at
Otto’s Tavern the last two
years along with a chinese
auction that raised $2300
which was part of the overall
benefit.
In all, $15,000 was raised
this year to help Tristan and
his family as well as the
Clarion County Shriners.
Vince and Carrie would like
to thank every person that
has helped make this event
such a great success. A special thanks to all the businesses and individuals who
were shirt sponsors and to
Ruth Vasey.
“It means the world to us to
know that we are surrounded
by so many wonderful people
in the surrounding communities”, stated Vince Forsythe.
Giving and helping people
that is what it is all about. You
just can’t ask for anything
more! Keep kicking those
balls!
P.S. Remember to vote for
Vince and Carrie for King &
Queen at the upcoming Charity Ball at Reminisce Banquet
hall on March 6th if you are
attending. See you there!
AC Valley Falcons
Baseball Benefit Dinner
Come one, come all! This unseasonable weather has many
of us thinking of spring. Spring brings baseball games. The
AC Valley Falcons Baseball Team is hosting a Spaghetti dinner
to support the team on Sunday, March 6, 2016 at Little IT Deli
on Main Street in Emlenton from 4-8PM. The dinner will include: Spaghetti with meatball, salad, dessert, and a drink.
Falcon Team celebrities will serve your meal with style and
grace. This is a great way to meet and support the youth of
our area.
The cost for the dinner is $12.00 with the proceeds supporting the Falcon Baseball. Tickets are a required, but there
will be a few first come/first served extra dinners available.
Tickets may be obtained from any AC Valley Baseball player
or at Little IT Deli (724-867-8000) or by email to Jenifer
Morgan [email protected]
The Team will be playing the first few games at Pullman
Park in Butler to get our season off the ground. We will be
looking forward to playing our home games at our newly
refurbished field in Emlenton. We hope you will support the
Falcon Baseball Team in their 2016 Season. Falcon Baseball
is Coached by Mike Woodward.

Well, I believe that winter is pretty much over, even
though as I am writing this, it’s snowing outside. The
statement is based on more than delusional hope. I have
spoken to two people who have seen groundhogs.
Groundhogs are true hibernators. I know, I know. Hibernating animals sometimes rouse for brief periods in
winter. The two aforementioned ones, however were
very active, behaving as though it were summer. I like to
think that’s a sign of spring.
As I was coming out of church on Thursday, there was
an earthworm crawling across the parking lot. In the
winter they burrow deep down and go into a sort of
hibernation to avoid freezing. The sight of that worm
told me that not only was the ground unfrozen, but the
worm was fairly close to the surface. I can’t help but
think that that’s a good sign. Insects have been out and
about as well.
Who knows? This may just be wishful thinking, but I
really don’t think so.
The Game Commission is looking into the possibility of
paying a bounty on coyotes. Those who advocate this
cite the decline in trapping due to falling fur prices. In
my case, it raises a question. If the Game Commission is
so strapped for money that they need a huge increase in
license fees, how are they going to pay bounties on
coyotes? The bounty system failed to work in the past,
and it will fail to work now. It’s nothing but another
excuse for raising license fees. One can only wonder if
it’s the Game Commission’s policies, rather than coyotes, that are decimating the deer herd. So often, when
humans mess with the predator/prey relationship, the
results are disastrous. If you are in favor of a bounty, read
your history. There was once a bounty on great horned
owls. Now, they are protected. It is just an unwise
policy.
Next up is something I find hard to believe. The Game
Commission is now tossing around the idea of classifying
porcupines as fur bearers. Imagine that! Would you like
to wear a porcupine coat? How about a porcupine hat or
gloves? Utterly ridiculous. The Game Commission, of
course, offers pseudo-scientific reasons for such a policy.
Apparently, the prickly little fellows have become somewhat of a problem. In my coonhunting days, I had no
love for them, as they could really mess up a dog. The
notion of porcupine hunting, however, never even occurred to me. Once again, I feel that it all boils down to
money. If porcupines are classified as fur bearers, it
would mean that you would have to purchase a fur taker’s
license to shoot one. What will be next, rats as furbearers?
Recently, I read a letter to the editor in an outdoor
magazine in which a Pennsylvania hunter, who sounded
like a senior, stated that he was hanging it up, due to
Game Commission policies. He felt that the fun he used
to feel had gone away. That is a sad thing to read, but I
am afraid that it will be happening more and more often.
And finally, the fishing bug is really starting to take
hold. Now is the time to get your gear ready to go. Trout
season is still a ways off, but you will be able to fish for
suckers and panfish before too terribly long. Now is the
time to check things like rod guides and windings, reels
and lines. When fishing starts, it will come suddenly. Be
ready.

The Catholic website Aleteia ran an article recently titled
“Turn It Off, Tune Out, Save Your Soul.” The gist of the
writer’s argument was that while there are some good
things on television, “We have to police what goes into
our minds and, if we have children, what goes into theirs,
and that policing ought to be a lot more stringent than it
usually is. It’s usually like the genial English bobby of
children’s story books, willing to look the other way,
when it ought to be like a North Korean border guard.”
I’m sure the writer is well-intentioned, and I sympathize
with parents who struggle to find shows they can watch
with their kids. That being said, I still think that perpetuating an anti-TV culture among Christians can be harmful
in the long run.
For instance, a lot of Christians have already given up
on television because they say it doesn’t reflect their values. But when a large group of people stops watching
TV, programming executives with the power to choose
what shows make it on the air can ignore that group. The
Christian complaint that there’s nothing good on TV
becomes self-fulfilling because the Christian audience has
removed itself from the equation.
The anti-TV attitude may also turn off Christian youth
with creative talents from pursuing a career behind-thecamera. Instead, TV should be seen as a mission field
where Christians can bring light to the darkness, as The
Christophers’ founder Father James Keller would say.
You may not like the content of a lot of shows today, but
they are generally well-produced and know how to tell
stories. If young people learn those techniques, then use
them to tell mainstream stories that reflect their values, an
impact could be made.
Consider that TV was traditionally watched in a living
room. Who do you usually have in your living room?
Family and friends. As hokey as it sounds, TV characters
who viewers watch every week become like family and
friends. The stories they tell can connect with viewers
and serve as a teacher or an inspiration.
For example, I watched a PBS documentary a while
back about Mary Tyler Moore in which Oprah Winfrey
said she was inspired to get into television because of
Moore’s news-producer character on her self-titled
sitcom. Also, I once heard “American Idol” winner Kelly
Clarkson say in an interview that when strangers approach her, they act like they’re old friends who’ve known
her all their lives. She attributed that to the fact that she
was a presence in their living rooms for several months.
That’s cultural power! Why would Christians want to
give up on that?
Finally, there’s the argument that a lot of people on TV
set a bad example. Here’s another perspective: my favorite sitcom of the last 20 years is “Everybody Loves
Raymond.” Boy, was there a lot of arguing on that show!
You could say it was setting a bad example. What I’m left
with from “Raymond,” however, isn’t the fact that they
fought a lot; it’s that they never let it get in the way of their
being a family. Once you waded through all the comedic
bluster, these were characters who genuinely loved each
other and stuck together despite their differences. That’s
a pretty good example in my book.
So before you decide to completely ditch television, see
if there are ways you can use it to some advantage. It’s a
powerful tool that will shape hearts and minds with your
input—or without it.

Greensburg, PA — In 2015, the Trail Town Program®
conducted two surveys to collect data from trail users.
The General Trail User Survey took a broad approach and
looked at trail users across the country. Trail construction
has been increasing across the United States. With millions of users utilizing these trails, they have the potential
to generate significant economic impact in communities
and cities that they run through. The purpose of this
survey is to determine what trail users are looking for
based on information and feedback related to usage.
Trail Town Program® has previously conducted surveys along the Great Allegheny Passage which has provided comparable data for the General Trail User Survey.
The survey was conducted online only, receiving responses from 804 users across the United States. Respondents of this survey represented 42 states and the District
of Columbia. The majority were also male, between the
ages of 46 – 55. 33.8%.of respondents used trails more
than once a week.
Some key highlights from this survey include:

The other sample survey completed was the Trail User
Survey along the trails that make up the Main Line Canal
and Trans-Allegheny Trails. 199 intercept surveys were
collected over a span of four months. The respondents
represented over 55 unique zip codes. The majority of
these zip codes were from Westmoreland County, Indiana County, Cambria County, and Allegheny County in
Pennsylvania. There were also zip codes from other states
including Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Of the
199 surveys, the majority of the respondents were male at

ARCA Brings Workshops to
A-CV Schools - Featuring C Street Brass
Allegheny RiverStone Center for the Arts continues its
successful Educational ArtReach program on Thursday,
March 3, 2016, bringing an
arts education residency for
Pre-K to 12th grade students
in the A-C Valley Schools performed by C Street Brass.
These young, 20-something professional musicians, known for their entertaining and virtuosic
playing of rock, funk, jazz
and classical music, will
perform workshops for
preK–6th grade students in
the morning and an assembly concert in their gymnasium. In advance, elementary music teacher Jennifer
Lowrey will introduce students to the music they’ll
perform. In the afternoon C
Street will perform an assembly concert for grades 7
– 12 and conduct afterschool, hands-on workshops with A-C Valley band
students, coordinated by
Scott DiTullio, conductor of
the Jr./Sr. High School
bands.
Delighted that C Street
will be working directly
with his band students,
Scott DiTullio said,” Musicians grow, in much the
same way as athletes. Musicians train daily for perfection of their instrument. As
they perform with others,
musicians have to be at the
highest possible level. They
cannot make a mistake.

The Progress News
Wired Outdoors Update
by Jason Say
It has been some time since
I last wrote an article for the
Progress News and when
they called me and said they
were doing an outdoor edition and would I be willing to
give an update on everything
that is happening with Wired
Outdoors, I replied, “Certainly!”
We are happy to be entering the 8th season of Wired
Outdoors! It seems like yesterday we were just getting
started. Most people remember that our first two seasons
we were on the Sportsman
Channel, but TV was never
going to be our thing. We
were always about the
internet and that has served
us very well. We are now
sponsored by 19 of the most
recognizable brands in the industry and our shows in 2015
were viewed over 3 million
times.
The best thing about our
show is many of them take
place right here in Northwest
Pennsylvania! For years
people told us that no one has
ever been able to make a
show work from here in PA.
They said you had to shoot big

tantly, is a Camo Cares update. Camo Cares has become a familiar name in most
households and over the past
6 years we have raised over
$500,000.00 to send children
and wounded veterans on
their hunt of a lifetime! That
is a very big number for a
small community. We are
VERY PROUD at Camo
Cares that 100% of everything we raise has went to
send 100’s of children and
wounded vets on their
dream hunts. Not one person receives a dime other than
the kids and veterans! It’s a
100% volunteer effort from
an amazing group of volunteers. This year the annual
event will be held at the
Fryburg Sportsman’s Club on
Saturday, June 25th and we
will be raising as much
money as we can to send
some very special kids and
wounded vets on their hunt
of a lifetime. For more information on Camo Cares, visit
our website at www.
WiredOutdoors.com and we
hope to see you there.
bucks from Texas or somewhere in the Midwest. Well,
we are happy that we proved
them all wrong!

to watch our shows, you can

In 2015 we were also
happy to launch a brand new
Wired Outdoors production
called Tooth and Claw TV

Clarion County Sport & Outdoor Show
The SCC Sport and Outdoor Show is returning to
East Brady Community Center for its 5th year beginning
March 11th thru the 13th.
There will be 60+ exhibitors all displaying and promoting their businesses or
organizations. Products to
see, try and buy will include
archery equipment, firearms and ammunition, kayaks, custom knives, rustic
furniture, ATV’s and UTV’s,
handmade long bows, trapping supplies and, of
course, turkeys since spring
gobbler season is just
around the corner. Just
about anything you can
think of for outdoor recreational use. There will even
be home improvement vendors and yes even some
vendors for the ladies.
There will be Gun Raffles
to support the local VFD’s
and youth sports.
The main attraction is the
Whitetail Wall of Fame. 30
lifelike whitetail mounts and
numerous European and
antler mounts on display for
all to see. These are Pennsylvania only whitetails, free
range and are what everyone hopes to see when you
are in your favorite hunting
stand. Visitors will receive
one vote to pick their favorite whitetail mount. The
owner of the mount receiving the most votes will be
awarded a $400 VISA cash
card compliments of the
East Brady Revitalization
Association. All others will
then be eligible to win a
number of great prizes compliments of Colony Homes
and other local businesses.
Truth be told almost every
goes home with a prize.
To help promote the outdoors to our youth, a “Kids
Zone” has been created.
The Kids Zone will include
the Trout Unlimited and
Steiner’s Outdoors and
More Trout Pond, (Note :
Trout pond will be open
Saturday and Sunday Only),
several Crosman air gun
ranges including one we
like to call the Pennsylvania
Safari. The Pennsylvania
Safari will have a number of
targets depicting the wildlife that roams the PA wilds
that children can take aim
and fire upon. We even
have a nerf target range for
those who may not be ready
for the air guns which includes inflatable whitetail
and brown targets. Pretty
cool for the lil’ tikes. I am
sure there will be more as
we are always having new
ideas thrown at us and if we
can make it happen for the
kids we will!
Event hours are Friday,
March 11 from 4–9, Saturday, March 12 from 10–6
and Sunday, March 13 from
1–2. Admission is $5 - good
for all three days, you may
come and go as long as you
keep your admission bracelet. Children under 12 Free!

Paul S. Mahon, of Montoursville, Pa., poses with the 561-pound male bear he harvested in
Plunketts Creek Township, Lycoming County, Nov. 17, during the statewide archery bear
season. Mahon is one of 68 Pennsylvania hunters in 2015 to harvest a bear weighing more than
500 pounds. The 2015 statewide harvest of 3,748 bears ranks as Pennsylvania’s third largest.
The Top Eight Harvest were in the last decade!
2015 Pennsylvania Bear Harvest
Ranks 3rd All-Time
It was a large harvest, and a heavy one
Pennsylvania hunters harvested a total of 3,748 bears
in 2015, the third-highest
tally in state history, the
Pennsylvania Game Commission reported today. And
a whopping 68 of those
bears topped the 500-pound
mark.
The harvest total represents an increase compared
to 2014, when 3,371 bears
were taken.
With 2015 total now official, the eight largest bear
harvests all have occurred
in the past decade.
The all-time high was recorded in 2011, when 4,350
bears were harvested. Hunters harvested 4,164 in 2005
and 3,510 bears in 2013.
Hunters in 2015 harvested
bears
in
57
of
Pennsylvania’s 67 counties,
an increase compared to
2014, when bears were
taken in 56 counties. Bears
were taken in 20 of the
state’s 23 Wildlife Management Units (WMUs), and
each
of
the
Game
Commission’s six regions
saw a larger harvest in 2015
compared to the previous
year.
The 68 bears harvested
weighing 500 pounds or
more represents a sharp in-
crease from 2014, when 41
bears taken by hunters
reached or exceeded the
500-pound mark.
And 18 bears in the 2015
harvest
topped
600
pounds.
Two bears tied for heaviest in the harvest, each
weighing an estimated 713
pounds. The first was taken
on the Nov. 21 statewide
opener in Blair Township,
Blair County, by Richard A.
Watt, of Gallitzin, Pa. The
second was taken Nov. 23
in Granville Township,
Mifflin County, by Gregory
A. Wilson, of Lewistown.
Lycoming County, perennially among the top counties for bear harvests again
led the way with 312 harvests in 2014, up from 286
the previous year. Among
other top counties for bear
harvests in 2015 were:
Clinton, 265 (179 in 2014);
Tioga 196 (275); Pike 180
(111); and Centre, 162
(117).
The four-day general season again set the pace for
the overall harvest, with
2,724 bears being taken
during that season. But the
extended seasons and the
archery bear season also
contributed to the totals.
What a decade for bear hunting: The 2015
Pennsylvania bear harvest, the third-largest in state
history, joined other recent seasons near the top of
the record books. With the totals now official, the
eight of the top 10 harvests all have occurred in the
last decade. Here’s a look: Top Pennsylvania bear
