Your Rights Are Under ATTACK!! If you own animals for personal enjoyment or are simply an animal lover, please read the information provided. Become informed of the Animal Rights Movement in this Country and how it affects every one of us. The animal production industry is already closely regulated in the USA today. Whether it is how your pet may have been produced, how our food supply is monitored, the use of animals in medical research or animals used for the entertainment industry. Every aspect from the way animals are housed, food is grown to the animals used in the Circus or Rodeo, is closely regulated by some or many government agencies. This information is being paid for by someone who cares deeply about our rights to own and produce animals in this Country. What is the initiative petition the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is circulating to further regulate dog kennels? The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and other extremist animal welfare groups are circulating in Missouri an initiative petition to place on the November ballot the so-call “Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act”. While the petition’s fear-mongering title may try to convince people to sign, the truth is HSUS is grossly misleading the public about the regulation of dog kennels in Missouri today and is using the emotional appeal of companion animals to build a multi-million dollar national lobbying organization whose primary mission is not the care of abandoned or neglected cats and dogs as the public is led to believe. Fact: Missouri already has strict dog kennel laws and regulations on the books. In fact, in 1992 Missouri was one of the first states in the nation to pass such a law. Fact: The Missouri Dept. of Agriculture has an aggressive effort to crackdown on unlicensed kennels in Missouri. The Department believes their Operation Bark Alert Program will do more for Missouri animal welfare than HSUS’s ballot initiative. Fact: HSUS’s ballot initiative would shut down many of Missouri’s properly operated, inspected, licensed and reputable facilities but does absolutely nothing to increase sate resources to go after unlawful dog kennels. Fact: The Missouri Veterinary Medical Association states, “We see this proposal as unfair and misguided. These properly and humanely operated facilities are providing families with pets under the guidance of extensive current regulations enforced by state government . . We don’t need more laws and more governmental limitations on those who follow the rules . . The MVMA believes the answer lies in adequate funding for more inspections and better enforcement.” MISSOURIANS FOR ANIMAL CARE COALITION TAKES ACTION!!! Several state organizations have joined together to form a Missourians for Animal Care Coalition. Its purpose is to inform the public about the ballot initiative and the ultimate goal of HSUS to eliminate meat from the human diet. The coalition is well positioned to address all animal care issues from companion animals to livestock. So what is HSUS? What is its agenda? Perhaps they say it best themselves. •“My goal is the abolition of all animal agriculture.” HSUS grassroots coordinator John “J.P.” Goodwin •“Our goal is to get sport hunting in the same category as cock fighting and dog fighting.” Wayne Pacelle, president of Humane Society of the United States •“The life of an ant and that of my child should be granted equal consideration.” HSUS senior scholar Michael W. Fox •“The Humane Society should be worried about protecting animals from cruelty. It’s not doing that. The place is all about power and money.” HSUS consultant and former HSUS Chief Investigator Robert Baker, in U.S. News & World Report •“I’m not an admirer of HSUS. They’ve always been primarily a direct-mail operation, and what’s known in animal rights circles as a credit-grabber.” HSUS co-founder Cleveland Amory The Truth About HSUS! Watch television and chances are you will see a HSUS commercial with images of kittens and dogs flashing on the screen, appealing to viewers to open their hearts and checkbooks. BUT DON”T BE MISLED! HSUS is NOT soliciting $19 per month to go to your LOCAL Shelter. • HSUS is a national factory-fundraising nonprofit organization preying on the public’s emotional attachment to companion animals. •The group collected $86 Million in contributions in 2008 and in the same year spent $24million on fundraising.* In other words, 28 cents of every dollar contributed is used to raise more money! •HSUS paid a single company more than $4.2 million to count its money.* •$31 million of the public’s contributions to HSUS goes for salaries and over $10 million is spent on litigation, lobbying, campaigns and legislation.* •Just $450,000 was spent in 2008 for the hands-on care of dogs and cats or just half of one percent of its total budget!!* *From the Center for Consumer Freedom’s analysis of the latest IRS paperwork filed by HSUS for 2008. There are two major organizations in the United States that most of us are familiar with. HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). Neither of these organizations are affiliated or lend financial support to your local Humane Shelter. Although both organizations operate large fundraising campaigns neither does any measurable amount of direct animal care. In the case of PETA, the animal shelters that they do operate have somewhere close to a 97% kill rate of the animals in their care. HSUS has solicited hundreds of millions of your dollars in the name of animal welfare, when in reality the majority (over 95%) is used to raise more funds for their executive salaries and expanse accounts, retirement accounts and for lobbying for restrictive animal ownership legislation on local, state and Federal levels. You have seen those commercials, showing the poor animals needing your help and for only $19 per month you can be part of the solution . . . . Less than 6 cents of the $19 contribution actually goes to direct animal care. For more information you can visit these websites: www.petbreedersandowners.com and www.humanewatch.org. Focusing on the Pet Industry please note the following facts: •The production of pets in most cases is licensed, inspected and regulated by either the USDA or a Regulatory Division of your State or Local Government. •The majority of pets sold in this country are produced by small hobby breeders or commercial breeding facilities. •The majority of these breeders produce pets in a caring and humane manner. As in any “industry” there are always a few who do not do it correctly and therefore there are a small percentage of “sub-standard” facilities that exist. •Whether you purchase your pet from a private breeder, commercial kennel, pet store or purchased from a shelter or rescue you should expect the same care and concern in regards to the animals’ health and well being. •Many breeders operate their kennel as a closed bio-secure facility for the protection of their animals. Despite AR propaganda this is not an indication that the breeder has something to “hide”, rather an indication that they have the health and welfare of their animals to protect from disease. Please remember that bringing a new pet into your family is a long term commitment. Please honor that commitment to your Pet.
