NGA Rawene PANUI Community O TE Newsletter ROOPU HUIHUI O RAWENE! 1 9 OCTOBER 2014 RĀWENE COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER “Action over drift, engagement over withdrawal, deliberation and debate over silence and denial” Tutor seeks new ideas in Italy Paula Hohua will attend the 2014 Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre, with this year's events bringing together more than 1,000 exhibitors from 130 countries, including over 300 Slow Food Presidia, chefs, farmers, fishers, eaters, authors, advocates, academics, artisans, international representatives from wine and gastronomy, and Slow Food’s network of small-‐ scale producers and food communities on six continents. The packed program of conferences, taste workshops, classes and more combine to reveal the impacts our eating and consumption habits have on the welfare of the planet’s ecosystems, people and animals. The Salone del Gusto is the world’s largest food and wine fair, focussing especially on regional products and cuisines. Particular highlights are Slow Food’s Ark of Taste and Presidia projects to preserve rare and endangered foods and food practices. Booth by booth, dish by dish, thousands of small-‐scale food producers demonstrate the extraordinary diversity of food. Paula says, “I want to bring back new ideas in regards to harvest and food festivals to small communities within the Hokianga, I think this is the right event to expose me to furthering my ideas, also to look at becoming a chapter of this organisation and get this kind of philosophy out there.” Her trip is the result of winning NorthTec’s Whanau scholarship award. In addition to attending Terra Madre and Salone del Gusto, Paula and husband Fred will be doing some cultural exchange with schools in California on their way to Europe. Paula would like to thank all her work colleagues of Rawene Campus, NorthTec, for the mentoring, support given, and would like to acknowledge NorthTec for the gracious Award. Our lovely spring weather has delayed the project, but progress is being made. The Sailing Trust will use the shed for boat storage and for a workshop, and the Rawene Fire Brigade and Coastguard will also be using the building. The original building plan has been extended to provide for a gymnasium, and all bays in the building will be partitioned off from each other. The Sailing Trust will not be responsible for organising or running the gym, but Rene de Vries, as Sailing Trust president, will liaise with people interested in re-‐establishing a gym in Rawene. All users of the building will be responsible for their own sections. Sailing Days ONLY $10.00 PER PERSON AT RAWENE TOWN HALL SATURDAY, 11TH OCTOBER Weather depending, people wanting to sail will meet every Sunday at 1pm. The first race will start at 2pm, to allow people time to set-‐up the boats and for a course to be agreed on. There will be a white board at the ramp, showing the course, and the start will be performed on the water by the Officer of the Day. Initially the focus will be on increasing people's sailing skills. One difficulty is knowing who is going to show up and when. We have had a number of requests for school sailing programmes, but will have to concentrate on Rawene School students initially, due to limited number of people to teach students. A Taheke to Rawene cruise will be undertaken some time during the Summer, possibly from a launch site on Puha Road. Race Start Sequence FROM 2.00 TO 5.00 p.m. (3 x 45 minute Workshops) Followed by a POT LUCK DINNER From 6.00 to 7.00 p.m. And FREE SOCIAL DANCE From 7.00 p.m. on INFO. PH. Instead of going home, he stayed out the entire weekend hunting with the boys and spending all his wages. When he finally got home on Sunday night, he was confronted by his very angry wife. After two hours, she stopped nagging and said: 'How would you like it if you didn't see me for two or three days?' He replied: 'That would be fine with me.' Monday went by and he didn't see his wife. Tuesday and Wednesday came and went with the same results. Thursday, the swelling went down just enough for him to see her a little out of the corner of his left eye. A man visiting a graveyard saw a tombstone that read: “Here lies John Smith, a lawyer and an honest man.” “How about that!” he exclaimed. “They’ve got three people buried in one grave.” HOKIANGA ATHLETICS 2014/2015 Begins 3.30pm Wednesday 22 October 2014 Rawene School Field All new and old members welcome! Judging by the looks on faces, people had a very good time at the Ceilidh (pronounced kay-‐lee) held at Rawene Town Hall last Saturday. The band of fiddle-‐player, whistle-‐ player, guitarist and bodhran drum player came from Kerikeri and beyond, as did the caller, whose day job is a probation officer in Kaikohe. There was a wonderful mix of people there including Ceilidh regulars, three-‐generation families, children holidaying with their grandparents, visitors passing through, and lots of locals who had never been to a Ceilidh before. We are very grateful to Creative Communities for a grant of $600 towards costs, enabling us to keep this family night out pretty affordable. With a turn-‐out of about 130 people (about half of them children and teens) we covered costs and have $100 towards the next Ceilidh, which will probably be in Kohukohu next autumn. Thanks to Dave (RAD) and Shantina for the use of teapots and for their teapot delivery services, all the people who helped with set up, supper and cleaning up, and to Wardy for an impromptu gift of pizza! Margie McCallum and Gail Aiken 9 OCTOBER 2014 THE ORIGINAL OPO STATUE IN ITS NEW HOME A year ago the Russell Clark statue of Opo the dolphin was shifted from its original position on the foreshore of Opononi to ensure its longevity, and replaced with a replica in bronze. The original statue was crafted in 1960 out of Hinuera stone sourced from the Matamata region, and was suffering from its lengthy exposure. The Hokianga Museum now has this statue in pride of place. The Hokianga Historical Society is delighted to announce that now the ultimate steps to house the statue in its museum have been taken. Information panels that will surround the plinth are to be blessed and put in place, in a short informal ceremony to be held in mid-‐ October. The Society’s chairman, Hiku Cherrington, will welcome guests, and the blessing is to be conducted by the Reverend Daniel Ambler. Attending will be the Mayor of Matamata, Jan Barnes, who will be accompanied by children from Te Kura o Te Rau Aroha and kaumatua. It is hoped that local dignitaries will include John Carter (Far North District Mayor) Sally Macauley (local Councillor), Heather Ayrton (the Society’s Patron), together with the craftsman of Opo’s plinth, Simon Land, and the statue’s owners, the Opo Memorial Committee, together with a group from the Opononi Area School. A warm welcome is extended to all members of the community interested in attending the occasion. Following the short ceremony guests are invited to a morning tea in the Omapere Church Centre. The event will take place at 10.00 a.m. on Saturday 18th October 2014, at the Museum & Archive Centre, 14 Waianga Place, Omapere. Taratahi Agriculture Training has a fees-‐free Level 2 National Certificate in Agriculture (General Skills) course starting on 13 October at Rawene NorthTec Learning Centre. The programme has something for everyone, whatever your skill level, whether you currently live and work on the land or are considering employment in farming, forestry or fencing. History tells us we don’t like losing to them and they will do anything to beat us. In the Ellis Park test, trailing for most of the game, the ABs fought their way back and took the lead with minutes to go. Officiating, the world’s worst referee, Wayne Kerr-‐Barnes, controversially awarded a penalty in the home team’s favour after the African television producers replayed a general play incident on the big screen in slow motion over and over until their skipper told the gullible Barnes to look at the screen. It’s strange how incidents like this happen at least 5-‐6 times in a match, but none in the ABs’ favour were shown the whole game (or the forward pass in the first SA try). In 2011 the All Blacks lost to the Boks when TV producers constantly replayed an incident in the same way, to which the home TMO denied NZ a try (and the game) when initially the ref awarded it. Is this the only way to beat the All Blacks? Will stadium big screens influence referees at the world cup? And the outcome of games? At least we weren’t food poisoned this time like 1995. In other news the Los Pumas shine their laser light on the Wallabies for their first win, the Silver Ferns lose, the Bunnies won the NRL league final after 43 years and the Mighty Taniwhas thrashed North Harbour. GUITAR VIRTUOSO CONCERT Morrell's Cafe, Waimamaku SUNDAY 19 OCTOBER 7pm $15 South Hokianga Community Arts Council Loren Barrigar and Mark Mazengarb share a special musical chemistry seldom found among musicians. Their varied repertoire of original and arranged music has won them countless fans around the world and many awards, including Best Instrumental for their original track Onward at the International Acoustic Music Awards. Influenced by guitar greats Merle Travis and Chet Atkins, their live performances of instrumental and vocal duets demonstrate a spectacular technical grasp of the guitar, as well as outstanding musicality and creative interaction. With a repertoire drawn from Americana, bluegrass, jazz, country and western and classical influences, a Loren and Mark concert is an exceptionally exhilarating experience. Fresh from their three-week USA tour with Australian guitar virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel, Loren and Mark take on a three-week Arts On Tour NZ tour. “… one of the most popular acts in Central New York ... Loren and Mark ... have established themselves as a premier acoustic act….” Kevin Corbett, Syracuse New Times Dave West P O Box 73 Rawene 09 4057 734 / 09 4057 779 The NZ sport rich list came out (per year) featuring a $1.5m SBW back in rugby, a $2m Grant Dalton yuppie & highest paid Government beneficiary, $2.1m golfer Lydia Ko, $2.3m Dan “Cotton wool” Carter ACC recipient & water-‐boy, $2.6m Ritchie McCaw AB skipper, and at number 1 was $13m Russell Coutts yuppie & unbeaten America’s cup skipper. At the club Sophie’s sweeps had Pete win the 4 Nations Jackpot $1000. I have no results in the ITM sweep this week with one week to go until finals. Jokes: I was at a wedding last week. When the bride came down the aisle the groom was waiting for her with his golf bag and clubs. She asks, “Why the heck did you bring your golf clubs to the wedding?” He turns to her and replies, “Honey, you don’t mean to tell me this is gonna take all day!!!” I went to watch an All Blacks game and the referee was a shocker. After the game I bumped into the ref in the parking lot, and went over to him to have a chat. “Hey, I found this phone and I think it may be yours” I yelled. “What makes you think that?” he questioned. “Well, it says 20 missed calls!” Happy Hacking, Dixon & Sophie Market Sign Who nicked the Market Day sign off the side of the bus shelter?
