I was sitting with other rabbinic colleagues who werc traveling widr me throughout the Ukrainc aud Israel on a UIC Mission lvhcr-r all of the sudden, it bcgan to snow. Snow in Jemsalem makes this ancient ciq, amazingly beautiftil. It sctdes on the streets, making the city look more like dre Cin' of Pcace that tocl easilv cludes its realitv. Those fbur days I spent in Israel in February r,vcrc incrcdible. One of tl-rc grcat surprises fbr mc was the new shades of lervisl-r flccs rvalking the strcets. Sincc my last visit five ycars ago, the immigration liom around the globe to Israel has suengthened the country. While many resources arc nccdcd to support thesc u'al'cs of immigrants, secing the melting pot effect on thc collntry is ar-nazing. I am convinccd that, ultimately, it will energize tl-re country as thcsc culturcs, customs, and idcas are absorbed into thc mainstream. Sunday, March 6: Dr. Alan Leshner, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, "Addiction is a Brain Disease and it Matters" (Perspectives in Dialogue). the work of congregations around the country, Machon Schechter rvhere Israelis are being trained as Conservative Rabbis and thc Conservative Yeshiva, our presence in Israel is growing. It is exhilarating to be able to introduce to Israelis a substantive alternative fbr their Iewish expression. It is easy to fbel bunkcred down by reading the news reports. However, the reality of the challenges to dre country are far more nuanced than a headline can capture. It is important that we move beyond headlines to learn abor.rt Israel. Hcre are a fbw sources for you to consider: Ha'are@ in English -Ha'aretz is one of Israeli's major daily papers: wwwhaaretzdaily.com The Middle East Media Research Institute MEMzu is the most reliable translator ofArab press from around thc regicln: www.memri.org |erusalem Post - This is the most commonly read English language paper in Israel: www.jpost.com There are numerous other sources that our Israel Action Committee works to publicize. The most important way to connect with Israel, though, is to visit. This summer is a perfect time to consider visiting Israel. Teens can experience the country in one of the many incredible summer programs. Families and singles can see the richness of Israel on their own or with our synagogue mission. I look fbrward to visiting Israel again soon and am jealous of everyone traveling with Rabbi Rudolph this summer. o o o o o t O o O o o o a o a o o o o o I o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o a o O o t o o o o O o o a O O o a t t o a o o a o a a o o o I a o o a a o a t a o o o o I o o recommendations to the Board for the next slate of officers and trustees. On behalf of the Board, I want to thank all of you who have expressed interest in serving in leadership roles for Beth El, and hope we can involve each of you in our synagogue's volunteer work. B'shalom, Brent Message from the President I have good news and bad news. The good news is that I am pleased to report that the Capital Campaign is coming to a successful conclusion. The bad news is that the construction will be taking just a litde longer than expected. Don Silverstein, our Construction Committee chairman, in conjunction with our architect, Levin/ Brown, has determined that the plans will provide enough space to add a Metro stop to our building, adjacent to the multi-purpose room on the lower level. By doing so, Beth El will be able to solve both our parking problems and also the need for extra funds because Metro will be covering the cost ofboth a multilevel parking garage and also payrng us an annual fee. Construction Update The completion of the first phase of Beth El's construction project has been greeted with excitement and joy. Spacious new classrooms, the warm and intimate Alan Swoff Memorial Chapel, the lovely Zal'ier Social Hall, and much needed multi-purpose space have all far exceeded our expectations. And in the last several weeks, The motion to approve this addition carried unanimously at the )anuary Board Meeting. In negotiating our deal with Metro, several minor problems arose, which may need further discussion. First, we will experience some mild noise and vibration problems in the Sancnrary. We will just have to sing more loudly. Second, we will need to be especially vigilant to malre sure our young children don't end up on their way to downtorvn or Shady Grove, but we assrilne they won't be able to figure out the Farecard machines. Third, there are several halachic isues of people using the train on Shabbat and holidays, but Rabbi Rudolph is looking into these. More problematic might be a scenario whereby a passenger walks through with a non-kosher snack, but eating is illegal on Metro. the stained and etched glass windows, In becoming the first synagogue in the country to will be leading the way. We appreciate your continued cooperation during the next phase of the building project, which we anticipate, with good weather, will be complete by May of 2013. Happy Purim! Now for the non-fiction. At that time, we will begin the "home stretch." Barring any changes due to weather or other delays, renovation ofthe Bender Sanctuary and Social Hall, as well as the adjoining kitchen, will commence in early April. From that time through late September' our 9:15 a.m. Shabbat service will take place in the Swoff Chap el/Zahler Social Hall, which can seat 400 people, approximately the same as the Sanctuary. The new kitchen, direcdy behind the Zahler Social Hall, will be available to prepare the post-service I(iddush' which will be served in the beautiful new (and large) Gallery space. Congregants and guests will enter the building through the new front doors (to be completed prior to April 2005), and proceed down the Gallery to the Chapel. The coatroom and restrooms are easily accessible off the Gallery. Our Shabbat morning babysitting will be located in one of the classrooms in the new wing. Beginning in early May, renovations will begin in the old classroom wing (all classes will also have an on-site subway station, Beth El again Congregadon Beth El of Montgomery well adding an extra spiritual dimension to the room. Our parking lot is scheduled for completion by early August. It's been a long haul, with a few disruptions but also much positive energy and excitement. By the High Holidays 2005, G-d willing, the project will be completed and we can all enjoy Rosh Hashanah and Yom IGppur in our new spiritual home. Splinters from the Board by Tami Simon During the January 25,2005 Board of Directors meeting, Sheila Bellack reported that all financial operating indicators are positive. We have a net surplus of $390,477 to date, which is typical for the end of the calendar year. The shul currendy has 927 member units. We have submitted a request to United Bank to restructure our loan, as discussed in previous Board meetings. We do not have to commit to this until the bank comes back to us with the interest rate, at which time we can make a final decision. Through December 3L, 2004, we have received (cash) over $4.5 million. Of the $2 million goal for the final phase of the campaign, we have received gifts and pledges of almost $l.l million. The Capital Campaign Committee is committed to raising the additional funds needed to complete the project and help keep dues and tuition increases at a reasonable level. Comstruction Upd,ate, Construction is going well and is on schedule. It is coming not a moment too soon; replacement of the old hot water heater was done earlier than planned because it stopped functioning last week, and there are problems with the old boiler. Rafrle Upd.aw, Shelly London reporred that the February S cr o ll wtll, include an announcement re garding the raffle fundraiser. The tickets are $100 each and winners will be drawn at the Beth El annual meeting onMay 24. The objective is to ner $50,000. The winner will win travel vouchers to Israel and runner-ups will win a variety of Israeli products. D'tarTorah. Haz,z,an Lubin discussed the fact that today is Tu B'Shevat (New Year for the trees - the first day of spring in Israel) and is observed by eating fruit from trees and having a seder. Much like a tree that stands upright, leaders must be righteous. In last week's Torah portion, we saw that Moses led the Israelites through the wildemess. The people complained because ttre water was bitter. Moses cried out to G-d, who showed him a piece of wood; Moses tfuew the wood into the water and the water became sweet. Moses, no matter how many times the people complained, turned to G-d. This reflects positively on Moses as a leader because of his faith. Here there was the potential of conflict between Moses and the Israelites, but instead, Moses took the ree and solved the problem. Iraders are always challenged to tum what is bitter into something sweet. fu a well-known sa)'rng goes, leaders are people who do the right fftg; managers are the people who do things right. I-et us leam from Moses to always to the right thing. Stoch Sale Resolwtion: The Board passed a resolution authorizing Sheila Bellack to sell a stock donation that had been made via a stock certificate rafJrer than an electronic transfer to Beth El's account. Debbie Feinstein stepped down as a trustee. We thank her for her service. Ed.acation and. Life I'ong lamm'ing. Iresa Fields reported that the Education cabinet met last week. /ack Minker put together a report of all adult courses in the Beth El community thatwill be published for congregants and posted on our'website. Also, Chocolate Hebrew will be offered for the first time in the spring to the adult B'nai Mitzvah class. The Hebrew subcommittee is working on other ways of teaching Hebrew. |errold Keilson summarized the letter sent to the board relating to the dual track program. During the last Religious School Committee meeting, a resolution was passed to offer a dual track program, i.e., both 2 day and 3 day options for 4'h and 5'h graders. Jerrold explained that some new information helped the committee come to this decision. While no formal evaluation has been done of the current pilot 2-day program, based on anecdotal data the program appears to be a success; students and parents believe the kids are learning. Attendance is higher in the 2 day program than the 3 day program. Louis Nagel supports the dual track, and the clergy has pledged their strong support in meeting the challenge of maintaining a viable high qualiry 3-day program as part of the dual track system. Arthur Popper moved that the Board commend the Religious School Committee on their hard work and endorse their resolutions regarding the dual rack program. That motion was arnended to state that the Board will do whatever it can to keep the dual uack program functioning successfully. The motion was seconded and approved unanimously. Prayer and, Spiritwali.ty. Peter Novick reported that attendance at the evening minyan is inconsistent and that meetings being held at shul don't always break for minyan. He is looking into possible ways of atuacting higher attendance. Tami Simon reported that professional evaluations were distributed last week and they are due February. She thanked the Board for their important feedback. I Beth El Helping Hands Child.ren\ Inn and, Beth El Volumteers The Children's Inn at the National Institutes of Health is an amazing place. The Inn houses families with children undergoing treatmenr at NIH for life-threatening or rare diseases and allows parents to stay with their children during this stressful re time. The environment is comfortable and friendly and even has computer rooms, TV lounges and a fantastic playroom for younger kids. Beth El volunteers prepare meals and serve food buffet style the fourth Sunday of every month. \44ry Sunday nightf Sunday is the day new families arrive so it is the day local synagogues and churches have chosen to provide meals. This eases the transition for new families, weary from travel, and gives them time to setde in without having to worry about food on their fust night. Nick Heffter, a dedicated Inn volunteer who served even during the snow storm, commented, "It gives me a lot of pleasure to help families and kids in need." Sharon Strauss said, "I help because I can" and Michael Strauss added, "It is a chance to give back to my community." Those ofyou who have donated a small bit ofyour time know it doesn't take much to make a huge difference. Volunteers buy or make vegetarian lasagnas, brownies, bread, or vegetable trays and buy milk or juice, and a handfi:I of people set up the food. One simple way you can get involved is by organizing a group for one night's food. Think about suggesting this as a project to your Havurah or your child's class. To all of you who have helped in the pasr, we thank you very much! Many thanks to my co-chairs, ]odi Krame and June Falb. In response to the Men's Club invitation, Bahia Blanca's spiritual leader, Hazan Andres Bomse, wrote that he was delighted to be united in brotherhood with Beth El. He explained that their Kehila is affiliated with FEDEC, the entity that unites the kehilot and synagogues of the Conservative Masorti Movement. Hazan Bomse told us that they are not egalitarian yet, that women are not counted for the minyan, but that girls can read from the Torah on their Bat Mitzvah, although without sayrng a particular bracha and without wearing a Tallit. The Hazan also wrote that most of the men who chose to participate in the Wrap, and who appear in the picture, had not worn Tefillin since their own or their sons' B'nei Mitzvah. It is remarkable that on a hot summer day (remember Argentina is in the Southern Hemisphere where the seasons are reversed), so many people of a wide range of ages gathered in a shul with no air conditioning to partner with Beth El and to participate in this tradition. If you want to help the leaders of the Kehila maintain the continuity of this small |ewish communiry you can send a check to Congregation Beth El and on the memo line write *World Jewry- Bahia Blanca."
