As it in Troy and Gallipoli… The Dardanelles Strait is lined with the bays and beaches of the Gallipoli Peninsula on the European side and the larger Biga Peninsula on the Asian side and is an ideal holiday spot. Aesthetes will be pleased to learn that this is the homeland of the first beauty contests. Today, holiday makers will find that fish, wine and fruit are the specialties of the many restaurants, along with a friendly pleasant service. The history of the Canakkale region (Troas) goes back to about 5000 BC. According to mythology, when the children of King Athamas, Phryxus and Helle, were sent away by their stepmother, they were mounted on a flying ram with a golden fleece which was given to them by their mother Nephele, the Goddess of the Cloud. Whilst flying over the straits, Princess Helle fell off the ram into the water… giving the foundation for the name Hellespont. Abydos on the Asian shore and Sestus on the European shore are the two sites of a famous love story. Leander was a handsome youth from Abydos, who was in love with Hero, a priestess of Aphrodite. Every night there was a terrible storm and he never arrived. Hero, assuming he had drowned, threw herself into the sea. The Persians were also here in the 5th century BC. The Persian King Xerxes built his bridge of boats across the narrowest point of the Dardanelles to land 100,000 troops on Thrace, as part of his planned conquest of Europe, only to have his vision end at the twin disasters of Thermopylae and Salamis. Ever since, Canakkale has remained a crucial geographical bottle neck controlling the crossing between Europe and Asia, as well as access to the region Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea beyond. Alexander the Great began his Eastern campaign by crossing the Strait in 334 BC. The Romans took over in the 2nd century BC until 395 AD, after which the Byzantine Empire ruled the area. There were Arab and Crusader invasions in the following centuries. In the 15th century, Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror built citadels on both banks of the Strait and founded the city of Canakkale. The city of Canakkale lends it name to the Strait that connects the Sea of Marmara to the Aegean and whose shores touch both Europe and Asia. 12 13 TROJAN EXPRESS Tour Description: When you arrive in the PORT OF CANAKKALE, your private guide will be waiting to lead you to your own luxury vehicle, in which you can relax as your private shore excursion to Trojan. This ancient city, originally a pre-Greek cult sanctuary, was established as colony of Myceane and then Crete in the 16th century BC and subsequently possessed by Persians, Ancient Romans and Byzantines as part of the province of Caria. This coast has become a very popular holiday resort and is genuinely attractive with its long sandy beaches, turquoise bays, ancient sites to visit, and its own microclimate, benefiting from hundreds of days of sun every year. Didim is within very close proximity to natural wonders like Lake Bafa national park and ancient sites of Miletus, Priene and Ephesus. Didim Beaches – most famous being Altinkum beach Famous for its gently sloping sandy beaches fringing crystal clear waters, Altinkum means ‘Golden Sand’. Its two long crescent beaches lie at each end of the resort, starting at the harbour and finishing at a rocky headland promontory, so providing over 1 km of beach. The sun-warmed waters along this beach are mainly shallow for a couple of hundred metres and are ideal for both supervised children and non-swimmers. Sun beds on the sands make it easy to relax in tan-building comfort, or if you are feeling energetic, canoes and pedaloes are available for hire. Other beaches nearby which are as beautiful as Altinkum beach include the 3rd Bay Public Beach, Hotel Front Beaches and Sahte Cennet (Heaven on Earth). Didyma – Oracle Shrine of Apollo Hidden among rolling hills only a few miles from the scenic coast of South-western Turkey, the ancient site of Didyma is famous from legendary times. Here was a natural spring where the 18 beautiful Leto is supposed to have spent an hour of love with Zeus, then giving birth to the twins (didymoi in Greek) Artemis and Apollo. It has been the most important oracle site in Asia Minor, its pronouncements to Croesus, Alexander the Great and other great kings altered the course of human history. The most dramatic feature is the ruins of Ionic Temple of Apollo which remains overwhelming, both by its enormity and intricacy. The flawless carved marble – much of it suspended nearly 100 feet off the ground- represents a classical Greek exercise in perfection. This temple, measuring 51 by 110 meters, was the third largest structure of the Hellenistic world, being exceeded in size only by those at Ephesus and Samos; however it outlasted them both. The temple of Apollo (Didymaion), preeminently famous as an oracle site, was the largest and wealthiest Ionic temple in Anatolia and was renowned for its holy relics, its treasury, its sacred spring and sacred laurel grove. The temple attracted pilgrims, lovers, merchants and kings alike for centuries seeking advice from the oracle of Apollo. The famous Greek mythological gorgon; Head of Medusa and the Sacred Way can also be found at Didyma. Bafa Lake Baka Lake was once connected to the Aegean Sea and was the remotest part of the deep Gulf of Miletus. The lake was declared a national park in 1989 and covers 65 square km. Today, approximately 224 bird species live around Lake Bafa. There are twenty different orchids and endemic plants and with a number of various wildlife. The lake is 30 km to Didim. 19 Ephesus The ancient Metropolis devoted to the Goddess Artemis “He who had laid eyes on it once will be convinced that the world of the immortal gods has moved from the heaven to earth” said the ancient poet Philon who saw the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus. Being the homeland of such masterpieces, artists and philophers throughout history, Ephesus nurtured a succession of civilizations that shaped our world. The Artemis Temple (one of the Seven Wonders of The World), Ephesus Theatre (with a capacity of over 25.000 spectators), the Celsus Library, The Temple of Hadrian and The Curetes Street are the spectacular attractions of this historical city. Ephesus is also the religious centre of the early Christianity and today. St John’s Basilica is the primary feature of the holy architectures in this ancient town. House of Virgin Mary Located on the top of the “Bulbul” mountain 9 km ahead of Ephesus, the House of Virgin Mary enjoys a marvellous atmosphere hidden in the green. It is the place where Mary may have spent her last days. Indeed, she may have come in the area together with Saint John, who spent several years in the area to spread Christianity. In the 4th century AD, a church, combining her house and grave, has been built at this site. Miletus...Cradle of Philosophy The ancient city of Miletus, the oldest and the most powerful of the 12 Ionian cities of Asia Minor, reigned as the cultural, commercial and intellectual centre of Ionia. Western philosophy originated in Miletus and it is the native city of Thales. The Miletus alphabet was accepted as the normal script employed in writing ancient Greek. The World’s first coins were minted in this city and exact weight measures were first established here in Miletus. The site is also renowned as the first city to which the principles of modern town-planning were applied. There are many well-preserved ruins to be seen at the site, including Delphinion Temple (shrine as the protector of ships and harbours), theatre (originally built in the 4th century B.C and enlarged to 15,000 capacity during Roman period), ancient harbours, Baths of Faustina, Roman stadium, Byzantine church & castle. Priene Priene was the member of the Panionic League of Ionian city states, whose 12 members include also Ephesus and Miletus. Priene is one of the first cities in the world to have its streets laid out at right angles. Temple of Athena is the prime attraction in Priene. The architect of this temple was Pytheos who also built Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the 7 wonders of the world. The other major structures are the theatre, bouleuterion (senate house) and gymnasium. 20 21 İzmir Alsancak Port “Cruise Tourism” is a rapidly developing tourism type which targets the mass of middle and high bracket income tourists that bring high revenue to cities. When it comes to “cruise tourism” in our country, İzmir Cruise Port draws considerable attention with its rising performance for the last nine years. Because tourism takes a very important part in our Chamber’s vision for İzmir, our Chamber has initiated an operation to bring cruise ships to Izmir in 2004 with the goal of “Tourism for 12 Months”. Izmir takes place among the four biggest ports for cruise tourism in Turkey (İstanbul, Izmir, Kuşadası, Marmaris) and ranks as the third biggest port in Turkey for cruise tourism according to 2012 statistics and first biggest port according to first three months in 2011. Being in the tenth year of cruise tourism, Izmir expects 590.000 cruise passengers with 200 cruise calls until the end of 2013. It is obvious that over the long term our present port can not response to exigences of cruise tourism in our city. Therefore a new “İzmir Alsancak Cruise Port” project will be started for the construction of a new cruise terminal which will serve our goal for “3 million passengers” in a shorter time. The town of Çeşme itself lived its golden age in the Middle Ages when a modus vivendi established in the 14th century between the Republic of Genoa, which held Scio, and the colony of Aydinids, which controlled the Anatolian mainland, was pursued under the Ottomans. Export and import products between Western Europe and Asia were funneled via Çeşme and the ports of this island. Chios (Greece today) became part of the Ottoman Empire in an easy campaign led by Piyale Pasha in 1566. In fact, the Pasha simply laid anchor in Çeşme and summoned the notables of the island to notify them of the change of authority. After the Ottoman capture and through preference shown by foreign merchants, the trade hub gradually shifted to İzmir, which until then was touched only tangentially by the caravan routes from the East, and the prominence of the present-day metropolis became more pronounced after the 17th century. In 1770, Çeşme became the location of the naval Battle of Chesma between Russian and Ottoman fleets during the Russo-Turkish War (1768–1774). Çeşme regained some of its former lustre starting with the beginning of the 19th century, when its own products, notably grapes and mastic, found channels for export. The town population increased considerably until the early decades of the 20th century, immigration from the islands of the Aegean and the novel dimension of a seasonal resort center becoming important factors in the increase. In recent decades, viniculture was for the most part replaced with the growing of watermelons which stand for another association with Çeşme aside from the thermal baths, surfing, fruits, vineyards, cheese, tourism and history. 7-Alaçatı; it is just 10 min (8 km) by car.Alaçatı is a characteristic landmark of Cesme; the only region in Cesme that carries traces of the Byzantine civilization, the Anatolian Seljuks and the Ottoman Culture. The province lies about 30 km from the Mediterranean in the alluvial plain of the Asi (the ancient Orontes) at the foot of Mount Habib Neccar (ancient Mons Silpius), and it is surrounded by large expanses of olive groves. The climate conditions being conducive to productivity, the fertile Antakya region has been luring migrants to the region throughout history. The city was also famous as a center of artistic, scientific and commercial activities in the Hellenistic world, a few remnants of which still remain. Iron is still mined in this area and Hatay is an important transportation link between Syria and other parts of Turkey. The most convenient ports for suitable routes to Mediterranean from Mesopotamia are also located in this region. With its current faith tourism centers, ancient cities steeped in history and beautiful landscapes, the province of Hatay is off the beaten track, but a detour definitely worth its while. The prime reason you should visit Hatay is the Antakya Archeology Museum (Antakya Arkeoloji Müzesi), which houses a world famous collection of Roman and Byzantine mosaics. Stunning jewelry, statues, tombs and archeological findings belonging to various periods discovered at the excavations executed in Harbiye, Antakya, Aççana, Çevlik and Iskenderun are exhibited in the museum. 88 A little outside the city is the holy site where St. Peter`s Grotto is situated. The cave church, where St. Peter preached and founded the Christian community, was declared as a holy place by Vatican in 1983. The Iron Gate of Antioch is to the south of the grotto among the ruins of the city. The Castle of Antioch offers a panoramic view of the city. At Harbiye, 8 km beyond Antioch, you can delve into history and mythology as you visit the ancient city where Apollo fell in love with Daphne, and Mother Earth, in order to save Daphne, turned her into an elegant tree. The story weaves on further to say that the waterfalls of Harbiye were formed from the tears of Daphne. Take a swim at Samandag to cool off from the hot and humid Antakya weather, or walk in the footsteps of St Paul and St Barnabas at the ancient city of Seleuica Pieria, 6 km south of Samandag. This city was a busy port at the time when St. Paul and St. Barnabas made their first missionary journey from here. The most interesting monument here is the Tunnel of Titus, which is a huge canal, dug for the purpose of diverting waters of Orontes River. Another highlight here is the rock tombs with their impressive facades relating to the Hellenistic period. Take a drive to the Kapisuyu village and from the Zeus Temple, you get a breathtaking view of the harbor, golden beach and lush, fertile plain lying below. 89 Mersin Port Mersin International Port There is one port in Mersin, Mersin International Port (MIP) that caters for the needs of international trade and tourism in the region. It was one of the most important cities among the other six Lycian cities. It was settled in the 5th century B.C. Although it was originally a coastal town, it has retreated from the sea because of the alluvium from the Demre stream. It was abandoned in the 9th century A.D. after the Arab invasion. The rock tombs, the theatre and St. Nicholas Church have survived to make it a place worth visiting. St. Nicholas, born in 245 A.D. in Patara near Fethiye (known variously as St.Nicholas, Father Christmas, Santa Claus, Heilige Nikolaus and Pere Noel) died in 326 A.D., having spent his life in Anatolia. Son of a wealthy family and of good education, he devoted himself to mankind. Because of the assistance he rendered to those around him, St. Nicholas was known as the protector of children and sailors, and to this day the legend of Father Christmas has continued to live as vividly as ever. As the Bishop of Demre, by his religious and social work, he solved the problems of the people in a humane way. After he died he was buried in Demre and a church was built there for his memory. In 108 Italian pirates stole some of his bones and took them to Bari. In their haste they left a few behind and these are today on display in the Antalya Museum. A popular excursion from Kaş is Kekova island in the neighbouring district of Demre. Here in the magnificent bays you will see a surprising variety of wrecks of ancient ships and ancient cities sunk under the sea by earthquakes over the centuries. The sea is so perfectly clear that the details of city buildings such as staircases or columns can be seen from the boat. The area is ideal for sea kayaking. In December 2006 Kaş was added to the specially protected Kekova marine area in order to preserve its rich biodiversity.[5 94 Fethiye For Cruise Ships Due to Fethiye Harbour is located in the city center, it is very easy to reach places for shopping, entertainment, cultural activities. It is located in the south of the Teke peninsula, and the coast here is a popular tourist destination. However, Finike is best known for its oranges, the symbol of the town. For centuries Finike, then named Phoenicus, was a trading port, the main port of Limyra, the capital city of Lycia. Phoenicus was said to have been founded by Phoenicians in the 5th Century BC, and thus named after its founders. The area has been inhabited for much longer than that; archaeologists have found evidence near the town of Elmalı showing that the Teke peninsula has been settled since 3000 BC (although on the coast nothing has been uncovered dating before 2000 BC). Trade along the coast was established first by the Persians, who relinquished Lycia to the armies of Alexander the Great. However, the coast was always vulnerable to forces from Syria, Egypt and Rhodes until it was brought within the empire of the Ancient Romans and the succeeding Byzantines. Even then the Byzantines were threatened by the Arabian armies coming from the Arabian Peninsula. Eventually the area was lost to the Seljuk Turks in the 13th century. These were succeeded by the Ottoman Empire from 1426. PLACES OF INTEREST • The ruins of Limyra are to be seen three miles east of the Finike, they consist of a theatre, tombs, Sarcophagi, bas-reliefs, Greek and Lycian inscriptions, etc. • The ancient city of Arycanda, in a narrow valley off the road to Elmalı. • The ruins of Trysa with a carved frieze depicting Theseus, on the road to Kaş. • The small village of Turuncova, hidden in small valley between Taurus Mountainsit will has preserve the traditional lifestyle and culture from many centuries ago. • The cave of Suluin. • Wreck of a Phoenician merchant ship from about 1200 BC in Cape Gelidonya 100 KAŞ Kaş (pronounced ‘Kash’) is a small fishing, diving, yachting and tourist town, and a district of Antalya Province of Turkey, 168km west of the city of Antalya. As a tourist town it is relatively unspoiled. The town of Kaş is on a hill running down to the sea. The district has a typical Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and warm, wet winters, which allows the growth of oranges, lemons and bananas. The lowland areas are also planted with cut flowers and a variety of fruits and vegetables, many are grown all year round under glass. The hillsides produce honey, and almonds, while at high altitudes there are extensive pine forests. The weather is drier at high altitudes.
