AUGUST 2015 | THE GARDEN PATH FOUR SEASONS • FIVE SENSES • ONE EXTRAORDINARY EXPERIENCE 1 FROM THE CEO Dear Garden Members, As I think back on the past few weeks, it is not an exaggeration to say that July was truly an historic month for the Garden. We kicked off the month by hosting a community meeting at which we shared the new Wildwood Trail plans. Citizens from around the community came to review the new path, ask questions, and voice both concerns and support. After working on this for three years, it was clear that no solution could please everyone. But we are happy to have found the solution that best addresses most people’s needs and concerns. One week later, our annual Behind the Shoji sale opened with an outstanding reception on July 11. We had a record attendance at the preview show which translated into record sales for the first night! We also began the long journey home for the torii gates’ kasagi which washed ashore on the Oregon coast following the 2011 tsunami in Japan. Having the kasagi here at the Garden was an incredible chapter to a long and winding tale. The outpouring of friendship and support from visitors and members reminds us all how the human spirit can so easily reach across an ocean to pass along a message of hope. But by far the most thrilling moment was standing alongside our supporters and officially announcing that our Cultural Crossing expansion will move forward with construction beginning this September. To think that after many years of planning, this project is truly coming to fruition. It makes me ever more grateful for all of you, our members, who made this possible in so many ways. I wanted to share with you some of the kind and inspiring words spoken on our behalf at the press conference: “The gardens are at the heart of the design. To be very clear, we are not touching the existing gardens. Those, in themselves, are perfect. What we are doing as an architect team is simply filling in the gaps; allowing visitors to come and put themselves in the right frame of mind before they enter the gardens.” —Balazs Bognar, Chief Manager at Kengo Kuma & Associates “Under the auspices of the newly-created International Institute for Japanese Garden Arts and Culture…the Portland Japanese Garden has the potential to become not just a glittering jewel in Portland’s cultural crown, but an international institute for the practice, preservation and development of Japanese arts and culture; known, respected and admired around the world.” —The Honorable Hiroshi Furusawa, Consul General of Japan in Portland, read by Board of Trustees member Kristen Dozono “Not only will Oregonians have a world-class resource for culture and beauty in their own backyard but they stand to benefit economically too; by our calculations, the Japanese Garden puts over $93 million back into the Oregon economy.” —Commissioner Amanda Fritz, City of Portland “It’s that perfect place in Portland that feels close and convenient to you physically, but is certain to take your mind to faraway places. The Garden will definitely take your breath away...” —Cathy Rudd, Board of Trustees President Another quote about the design, from the ensuing press coverage, was a personal favorite: “Well we have seen it now, and it is fantastic. It is by far the most refined and impressive architectural project attempted in the Pacific Northwest since the Aalto Library in Mt. Angel.” —Jeff Jahn, PORT I look forward to keeping you updated about the project as it moves along. If you haven’t already done so, please visit culturalcrossing.com to learn more. Sincerely, Stephen D. Bloom Chief Executive Officer GAKU-MC WITH SPECIAL GUESTS THE VON TRAPPS Continued from page 1 journey began in 2001, when during visits to their Montana home, their grandfather Werner von Trapp taught them the Austrian folk songs he loved as a child. When he became too ill to travel, they crafted a homemade recording to cheer him up, never expecting it would inspire a career in music. The von Trapps have been on stage together ever since. Their performances, which feature melodicas and ukuleles, lyrics that can unspool in ten languages, twinges of Appalachia and Portlandia, and occasional shout-outs to the Mamas & Papas, are all filtered through the DNA of the most beloved musical ever, The Sound of Music. 2 AUGUST 2015 | THE GARDEN PATH AROUND THE GARDEN Photo: Bob Schlesinger BEHIND THE SHOJI July 12—August 16 Garden Hours Included with Garden Admission Valued for their versatility and the intimacy they provide, Shoji screens have been used in Japan for thousands of years. Married for 48 years, their life together has taken them from California, where they met, to Eugene, Oregon; from Juneau, Alaska to Moscow, Russia. Recently, I took a stroll through the Garden with John and Ann on a cool, early morning during member hours. I knew we were going to have a great chat when they rolled up in a Thunderbird convertible, When asked what led them to the decision to plan their gift now, John and Ann produced a card that Ann created on a letter press, a spare-time hobby of hers, with a quote from Pablo Picasso: “Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone.” Thank you, Ann and John, for your forethought and generosity. For more information on planned giving, please contact Tom at (503) 595-5225, or [email protected] with the Alaska license plate “GEEZR.” GOLDEN CRANE BRAND John and Ann first visited the Garden in the early 1970s, when they were students in Eugene. They said they always sought out the gardens when they traveled in Japan, and quickly came to realize GOLDEN CRANE how truly special the Portland Japanese Garden is. Over time, their S O C I E T Y relationship with Portland deepened and they became members of the Garden in 2010 when they were still living in Russia. In 2011 Ann and John, who call Juneau and Tenakee Springs, Alaska home, chose Portland as a third location because, like Moscow, it has good public transportation, culture, food, and a lot more. Shortly thereafter Ann and John contacted the Garden’s development department about planned giving opportunities. John is a retired educator who received his Doctorate in Education from the University of Oregon. He devoted his career to helping children of all types who learn differently—including talented and gifted kids, as well as those with learning challenges. John says he has been quite successful as a retiree, for over two decades, and one surmises this is because Ann has never, ever given him the opportunity to be bored. Ann is a librarian. She received her Master’s of Library Science from University of Oregon and then devoted the majority of her career as a school librarian in Juneau. And though that might sound isolating, given that Juneau cannot be reached by car, Ann’s international library work has taken her to Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Turkey, Latvia, Germany, Brazil, Peru, Japan, and Russia, where she worked for six years as the librarian of the Anglo-American School in Moscow. Along the way she served as President of the American Librarian Association and championed intellectual freedom and the right to read around the world, focusing especially on school libraries and LGBT issues. She has written books and programmed conferences on these topics and in 2014 she received the American Library Association Equity Award. 6 THE GOLDEN CRANE SOCIETY Cumulative giving to the Annual Fund from May 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015 GOLD CIRCLE PMS 548 Bank of America Gwyneth Gamble Booth Dr. & Mrs. John R.
