The First Word
Greetings Fellow Members,
What a first half of the year we’ve had here at the Club! It’s truly amazing to think of where we are right
now compared to only 12 months ago. From the condition of the golf course, renovations inside and out,
to our membership level and the overall excitement within the Club, things have never been better here at
Briarwood! Keep on promoting your Club and help us take another step forward.
Obviously you have all noticed the record heat we have had in the month of June. This heat will cause extra
stress on the golf course. In order to make sure the course makes it through the heat wave, you will probably
notice a few new techniques from the grounds crew. The greens will stay a little longer in order to relieve
stress and you may see us spot and hand watering during the day. While your score may improve with slower
greens we will try not to hassle you too much with the day time watering schedule. Heat during the day
is one thing but, golf course diseases can worsen when temps and humidity at night stay over 70. We’ll be
spraying some extra chemicals during this time as well. Finally, be watching for James’ new four legged staff
member “Murphy” as he tries to keep those nasty geese away.
Moving on to the golf shop we have been pleased with the record turnouts in couple’s golf and our Ladies
Member Guest. We couldn’t be happier with the large numbers of you taking part in such fun events. I
would encourage as many new members as possible to play in couples events! This is the best way to meet
fellow members. Just sign up online, or call the golf shop and Eric and his staff will pair you up with a fun
group. Briarwood Junior’s seem to be out in droves this summer for junior golf. We have so much young
talent playing Golf at Briarwood on a daily basis. I would encourage juniors to play in any tournaments
around the area. Local Junior tournaments can be found on the Iowa PGA website or the Iowa Golf
Association website. If you have any questions about which events to play in or what these are all about,
please stop in the shop and ask at anytime. Finally, thank you to everyone for supporting the golf shop with
your merchandise purchases. There is nothing better than a proud membership decked out in Briarwood
Club of Ankeny gear. Remember, if you need some clubs, Eric can get you all set up!
Needless to say the pool has been a hot spot this summer. Hopefully you have all been able to splash around
and cool down at the Briarwood pool. A big hit this year has been the ice cream and frozen treats at the
snack shack. We are excited to see so many of our junior swimmers growing stronger during swim team and
representing the Club with big smiles and sportsmanship at the junior swim meets. Keep up the great work!!
Along with the new dining area renovations comes an updated Menu as well. Hopefully many of you have
been able to get out and try Chef Matt’s new fare. As always members have truly enjoyed the food and are
now able to enjoy it in a first class clubhouse. Continue to stop out and try some of the fantastic items Chef
Matt has to offer.
I hope to see you all at Briarwood very soon and as always, continue to support your Club.
All the best,
Matt

A Word From The Pro
Greetings Members,
It is hard to believe the golf season is almost half over but what a first part of the season we have had. The
participation and excitement for every event has been fantastic. Keep it up!
Some upcoming events to make sure you mark your calendar for are:
Ladies Invitational Tuesday, July 10. This is a great opportunity to be proud of your club and show it off to
ladies from clubs around the area. The event will shotgun at 8:00 AM with lunch to follow golf. The format is
a 4 Lady Best Shot and it is open to members and guests. Cost per member is $20.00 plus cart and for guests it
is $55.00.
The Iowa PGA Local Junior Qualifier Drive, Chip, and Putt will be rescheduled for Saturday July
13 at 10:00 AM
The premier men’s event of the summer the Four Mile Invitational will be held July 19-21. Thursday is
the practice round with the tournament being held on Friday and Saturday followed by the awards dinner
Saturday night. This event is full with a wait list. If you would like to have the opportunity to play in future
Four Mile Invitational’s make sure to get your name down for 2013!
Men’s & Women’s Club Championship will be held July 28 & 29. Format for the event is stroke play
and all competitors will play at least 36 holes. You will be pre-flighted based on your handicap so you are
competing against players of similar abilities. Cost per player is $35.00 plus cart each day.
I want to thank all of you for participating in the events we put on at the club. The large number of
participants in each event is what makes the Club such a fun and exciting place to be, and builds lasting
memories for all.
Golf Course Dress Code:
PROPER ATTIRE IS REQUIRED AT ALL TIMES
For Gentlemen Golf polo shirts with a collar or mock turtle neck
style shirts, all in good taste. T-shirts, crew-neck, sleeveless,

The Word On The Course
I hope that you have all survived the heat spell we just had! I am still in absolute awe of how hot it got
and how long the temps were that high. Every year there is a new challenge. Whether it be a “Five Hundred
Year Flood”, a two week rain stand, or the humidity percentage out the roof, there’s always a battle to be fought.
With that being said, when the tough get going, you have to go in to survival mode. When I say that, I literally
mean it.
With the temps as high as they have been, the last thing I want to do out here is stress the turf any more
than it already is. It’s a fine line between fast and dead, so I do what is needed to ensure that we keep the greens
and the rest of the course as healthy as possible. With one hundred plus temps, I held back on the rolling of
greens, I watered a little more liberally on the greens, and I was conservative with the water elsewhere to help
avoid disease pressure. With the temperatures now cooling down, I will go back to our scheduled maintenance
and get things where they need to be. I apologize for the “slow down,” but the health of the turf is my main
priority. We’ve worked really hard to get this place grown back in. I want to go into the fall and winter healthy.
After a long absence of having a dog on the course, the maintenance staff now “hired” it’s newest
member. Murphy is a seven month old Terrier mix we got from the Animal Rescue League. I know what you’re
thinking, because I thought the same at first too, but this dog is amazing! Murphy is pretty darn smart and has
picked up a knack for chasing the geese quickly. His temperament is amazing and I couldn’t be happier with
the choice we made. He sits at my feet as I type this and smells like the pond! I’m sure you’ll see him out on the
course as he loves to help cut cups and of course chase the pests. We have a dog house, kennel, and all the food
supplies we need for a while. I am however looking for a training collar. We would like one in order to properly
train him commands and improve on his “geese hunting” skills. If any of you members have one laying around
I would be happy to take it off your hands!
This summer has flown by so far, I hope that all of you are enjoying the Club and getting out
participating in all there is to do. I look forward to seeing all of you out on the course, stay cool out there!

Club News
Meet Murphy!
Murphy is our newest Briarwood
Staff member. He stands two feet
tall, weighs in at about 30 pounds,
and loves to chase geese! Murphy
was rescued from Animal Rescue
League by our grounds crew. He
lives in the maintenance shed and
loves his new home! Make sure to
give Murphy a wave the next time
you see him riding around on the
cart out there!
On Our Best Behavior
We want to remind everyone of
a few important things to keep
in mind during the Summer at
Briarwood.
1) Please be aware that we do not
allow bathing suits in the
Clubhouse. Shirts and shoes are
required at all times.
2)You may notice that staff members are asking you to sign your
tickets. Although this is a newer
policy we need membership
support to drive it home. Signing your ticket takes only a few
seconds and it helps to ensure
that the correct items are being
charged to the correct member
number.
3)We love seeing young faces
around the Club, and we hope
to offer an environment that is
respectful of families young and
old. Please remind any younger
members of clubhouse and pool
etiquette. This includes knowing
their correct member number if
they are able to charge without
adult supervision. Got a great golf shot?
Share it with us! Email news worthy photos to Amy at awarford@
briarwoodclubofankeny.com
This was taken during “Church
League” on Saturday night. The
guys and gals play alternate shot...
This was the second shot on
number Two from 100 yards out.
I’d say that’s a Gimmie!
Corn Feed
Please join us at the pool after
the Summerfest Parade Saturday July 14 for $2 Hamburgers
and Hot Dogs and
FREE SWEET CORN!!
(While it lasts!)
Due to some challenges we faced
with allowances of vehicles on
the parade route, we will NOT be
participating in the Ankeny
Summerfest Parade.

Meet The Geezers
There are a number of member organized golf
groups here at Briarwood. Most get together for
a round of golf to socialize and meet new people.
That is what Briarwood is all about, friendship
through a great game! Many of you may be involved in “Church League”, a group of members
who praise the Golf Gods, on Saturday night. The
men in the photo to the right are the self proclaimed “Geezer” group. Although, I’d say they are
from “Geezer” status! You can see these gentlemen out any given morning in the prime of their
retirement. They are living it up on the Briarwood
Links. Now, that is the life!
Cheers, to you Geezers!
Briarwood Board of Governors
As many of you know the member appointed Board of
Governors is comprised of several of your fellow members
to guide management with important decisions and standards in excellence that need to be made here at Briarwood.
It is important that you are aware of who these members
are. Continue to give them constructive feedback about
