Hard to Imagine
It’s Been 85 Years...
The JCC has been a part of the community for 85 years, and we are
as relevant today as when we opened our doors in 1929. Our story
is also the same. It’s one of compassion and service; education and
growth; caring and community. We’re part of something bigger than
ourselves.
Last year, we provided:
• Nearly 400 hours of individual and group counseling,
educational workshops, information and referral services
• Day camp programming for 350 children, 15 % of whom
received scholarships totaling more than $40,000
Amy Martini
First Vice Chair
• Social and recreational programming for more than 500 adults
and seniors through lectures, films and concerts

• Programs for more than 150 children, teens, families and
adults with developmental disabilities

As we celebrate our 85th birthday, we’re reflecting on our rich history
of community service. In doing so, we’ve never lost sight of the fact
that it is only through the generosity of our members and other constituencies that we are able to do what we do for the community.
For all these years our JCC has been an integral part of the community,
a respected resource and a provider of services. Those who have
benefitted and continue to benefit from our support haven’t been
“strangers.” They’ve been, and are, family, friends and neighbors. If
you’ve already given to our Annual Appeal, thank you. If not, there’s
still time to do so. Consider it your 85th birthday gift to the JCC.

Looks Can Be Deceiving…
JCC’s Expansion Project
A REAL Success in the
Neighborhood
Although the outside of the building may look “quiet”
there’s been a lot of “noise” going on inside.
The Keeping It Real in the Neighborhood (KIRTN)
space, a simulated apartment designed to teach life
skills to students with special needs, officially opened
its doors this fall. The event was marked by an Open
House which introduced members of the at-large
community, government and school district officials,
and students to the KIRTN program. This collaboration
between the JCC and the Tarrytown School District
aims to fill some of the void faced by students as they
age out of school by creating a model apartment and
supportive programs in which transitioning students
learn and practice the life skills necessary to go from a
highly structured school environment to adult life. The
apartment space will also provide marginalized people
with a safe, supervised place in their community to go
for social and leisure-time activities.
• We have demolished more than 11,000 sq. ft. to
make room for the new gym/pool complex, eliminating
asbestos and opening up the space by removing
several interior walls.
• We have hired a pre-construction manager to assist
our architect in developing the facility, look at infrastructure alternatives and determine project costs.
• We have been focusing with our architects and
consultants on making final decisions on the needs
of each programmatic space including site security,
audio visual requirements, fitness center equipment,
auditorium seating, kitchen equipment, etc.
• Our construction drawings are 80% complete and
once they are 100% complete and vetted, we will
submit them to the Tarrytown Building Department
for approval to break ground. Simultaneously, the
project will go out to bid.
3
• We are having positive discussions with several
potential funding sources for project financing.
Although our capital campaign is about $6 million,
as in any major construction, there is a need to
finance a portion of the project.
We will keep you fully informed as the project progresses
in 2014.

During the past 20 years, our Early
Childhood Program has welcomed
thousands of kids, readying them for
kindergarten. Our philosophy emphasizes
an emergent curriculum and childcentered classes concentrating on
hands-on experiences, experimentation,
and creative expression. Children learn
through play at in-classroom learning
centers and enjoy supplemental learning
on local field trips. We teach social
responsibility through social action, and
Jewish values, culture and holidays are an
integral part of our program. Our sites are
at two convenient Tarrytown locations, on
South Broadway and on LeRoy Avenue at
Temple Beth Abraham. The Early Childhood Program is licensed by the New
York State Office for Children and Family
Services. Call for more information or to
schedule a tour.

Teens
Colleen Malone, Director Youth Programming
Westchester Jewish Teen Learning Initiative/
Jewish Education Project
Innovative Jewish experiences that fit teens’ interests, personalities, and schedules. Programs are open to all Jewish teens
in grades eight through twelve throughout Westchester, across the range of Jewish practice and educational backgrounds
with classes and experiential learning in dozens of locations. Take a single class or create a schedule with several weekly or
monthly experiences. Synagogue JCC membership is not a requirement to participate—only an interest and enthusiasm for
Jewish learning. Our Madrich (youth guide), Rabbi Lisa Izes, is available to explore your choices and help create a schedule
that fits your individual path towards Jewish learning.
WJTL is coordinated by the Jewish Education Project with generous funding from UJA-Federation of New York
and Neshamot.
Rabbi Lisa Izes as “madricha” (guide) is available to connect individually with our teens in order to help support them in
their Jewish journeys and be a friendly listener and source of information. Contact her at the JCC to schedule a time to
meet (maybe over hot chocolate?).

The JCC on the Hudson is a beneficiary agency
of UJA-Federation of New York. It is an affiliate of the JCC
Association and a participating member
of the United Way of Westchester.
In the spirit of giving this holiday season, members of the
JCC community, The New NY Bridge project, and Stop
& Shop Supermarkets donated food, and pajamas, that
found their way to UJA-Federation’s Families Feeding
Families and the Pajama Program, both of which serve
needy families and youngsters in our area. Before distributing
the goods, the Bridge team provided their architectural
expertise to help us build a replica of the new TZ Bridge
out of canned, boxed, and bottled food, and our Early
Childhood Program youngsters stuffed our school bus
with PJs and food.
