About the Quarryland Men’s Chorus
Quarryland Men’s Chorus provides a positive performance-based community for
gay and bisexual men and their allies in South Central Indiana. We foster talent,
fellowship, pride, and understanding through excellence in vocal music.
The Chorus presents two full concerts annually, and has performed and
volunteered throughout the community for events such as church services, PRIDE
Film Festival, Spencer Pride, Indy Pride, 4th Street Festival, Mini University, the
AIDS Quilt Opening Ceremony, and The Laramie Project, thus fulfilling its purposes
of reaching the general public and serving as cultural ambassadors to and for
the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community. As a result, the Chorus
received the 2009-2010 community-member award from the Indiana University
Commission on Multicultural Understanding.
Founded in Summer 2002, the Chorus offers men the opportunity to make music
together. Singing membership is open to men who desire to sing, regardless of
their musical background, and our membership typically ranges from trained
musicians to beginners. The group strives for a fun and supportive environment
while performing music that provides an appropriate challenge to all involved.
The Chorus continually seeks new performers, as well as non-singing members
and volunteers, to assist the organization. Membership is open to all individuals
who support and affirm the mission and purpose of the chorus. We welcome
singers of various ability levels who desire to expand their musical knowledge and
abilities. Rehearsals are held 7:30 pm on Tuesday evenings at First United Church,
generally from August through May. We encourage newcomers to attend any
time.
Non-singing membership is open to anyone who wants to assist the Chorus in the
pursuit of its mission and purpose. We can always use assistance with activities
such as choreography, composition, costuming, stage craft, program planning,
recruiting, publicity, ticket sales, fundraising, audience development, and board
leadership. We appreciate the support and involvement of individuals who may
have other talents to contribute, or who may simply enjoy our company.

FROM QUARRYLAND’S ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Family and friends are the most important part of
any holiday. Singers, volunteers, and donors are all
important in our family. We do this all for you, the
Quarryland community, which attends our concerts
season after season and joins us in our larger mission
of creating a supportive environment for the GLBT
community. Our voices are Stronger Together.
Across our community we celebrate many different
holidays throughout the year. As I survey that landscape
several themes standout for me--none more authentic
than Peace, Hope, Joy. So don’t be too surprised to
hear more than your “traditional holiday” program (by
which most people generally mean Christmas). Rather
we invite you to reflect on how your experiences have
shaped your definition of these words and, equally as
important, what you do and can do in your daily life to bring as your gift to the world
Peace, Hope, Joy.
We hope you enjoy and are enriched by the music on today’s concert. Rather than
placing the pieces in some themed order, they are woven together to create a larger
experience and understanding that these concepts are not isolated ideals but rather
intersecting. The concert includes several selections that come from both sacred and
secular Christmas traditions such as “Hodie Christus Natus Est” and “We Need a Little
Christmas.” While many of us grew up singing “Let there be Peace on Earth,” we’ve
also included beautiful arrangements of “Dona nobis pacem” and “Oseh Shalom.”
“Thankful,” a song made popular by Josh Groban, reminds us that sometimes we forget
to take a step back and see the joys that surround us everyday. There is also some
pure joy in “Boogie Woogie Hanukkah” and a mash-up of Joy to the World. Finally,
we are reminded that peace, hope, and joy have fuller meaning because we’ve also
experience pain, sorry, and failure. “All this Joy” and “Umi Sono Ai” help us to explore
this relationship.
I wish you peace: moments of peace from everyday hassles; peace of mind knowing
that your presence and action has and can make a difference in the world; and peace
from those who see you as the object for their hate and pain.
I wish you hope: the eternal hope that tomorrow will be better and hold new promises
for you and the world; hope that someday each of us will be equally valued and
supported in our needs.
I wish you joy: that is unmovable; joy that springs from the love we share with another;
joy in seeing visions of peace and hope fulfilled.

Winter, by its very nature, is a cold and dark time of year. To make it through these
dreary months, we must fill our lives with peace, hope and joy – be it a cup of hot
chocolate, a gift for a loved one, or a gathering of friends and family. This is the time
of year that we reflect upon what is most meaningful to us, cherish what we have, and
dream of what can be.
Many in the Quarryland community know just how important it can be to find peace,
hope, and joy at times when we feel we have none. Tonight, let our music lift your
spirits and carry you through these wintery days.
Hodie Christus Natus Est is a Gregorian antiphon to the Magnificat, sung at the
second vespers of Christmas. It tells of the birth of Christ and the celebration of both
angels and mankind. The music was written by composer, conductor, and music
professor Gordon H. Lamb.
Thankful It is easy to become overwhelmed by the political and social struggles that
we face in this modern day. Thankful begs us to remember the things that we already
have, and from that strength, to hope for a brighter future. The song was popularized
by Josh Groban and arranged for chorus by professor and conductor Rollo Dilworth.
Dona Nobis Pacem To tremendous effect, the sole lyric, dona nobis pacem, “grant us
peace,” is repeated over and over throughout the piece. As the song evolves, listen
to how those same words can ask, beg, demand and plead for peace. Composer and
conductor Joseph Gregorio submitted Dona Nobis Pacem to the 2001 international
competition “Waging Peace through Singing.” The song was one of more than sevenhundred entries in the competition and it won Top Honors in the category of Men’s
Chorus.
This Holiday is a direct call to forget our differences and to embrace the holiday spirit
through peace and joy. Composer Steve Milloy is a versatile performer, conductor,
teacher, composer and arranger. Before moving to Cincinnati, Milloy was the
accompanist and composer-in-residence for the Indianapolis Men’s Chorus.
It Takes a Village Drawing from the West African saying, “it takes a whole village to
raise a child,” composer Joan Szymko designed this song to illustrate the coming
together of a community. Listen to the song’s evolution between unison, harmony,
and moments of clashing rhythms. Arranged for TTBB at Quarryland’s request, we will
be among the first men’s choruses to perform this piece.
Let There Be Peace on Earth Written in 1955 by Sy Miller and Jill Jackson, this call
for peace was first sung at a summer workshop for teenagers in California. As those
teens returned home, the music spread around the country. Since then, it has been
performed at concerts, celebrations and ceremonies around the country and the
world. Please join us in asking for peace this holiday season by singing along!
Boogie Woogie Hanukkah Not only does this piece capture the joy of the holiday
spirit, but it embodies the playful spirit of Quarryland. Composer Eric Lane Barnes
is the author of the critically acclaimed Fairy Tales and has written many scores and
scripts for Chicago’s Lifeline Theatre. Boogie Woogie Hanukkah is one of many of his
songs that Quarryland has performed over the years.
Oseh Shalom was commissioned by the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC for their
2003 winter concert. Requested to be written in Hebrew and on the cusp of the Iraq
war, composer Paul Leavitt took text from Job 25:2 to create this powerful prayer for
peace.
All This Joy This popular song by Jon Denver is a reminder that life will always contain
both joy and promise as well as sorrow and pain. The piece was arranged by Heartland
Men’s Chorus’s Artistic Director Joe Nadeau (currently with the Los Angeles Gay Men’s
Chorus) and accompanist Lamar Sims.
The Great Peace March illustrates an unwavering belief that our steady march toward
our hopes and dreams cannot be stopped. It is a great reflection of songwriter Holly
Near’s decades-long activism for women’s rights and the LGBTQ community. The song
was arranged by Dennis Coleman, who has been the artistic director of the Seattle
Men’s Chorus for 32 years. It was last performed by Quarryland in its 2005 concert
“Parade of American Music.”
Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day is a traditional English carol that celebrates the
coming of Jesus Christ. The lyrics are from the perspective of Jesus himself, depicting
his life as a dance. This version was arranged by composer and pianist Howard Helvey.
Umi Sono Ai Written by the famous Japanese musician and film star Kousaku Dan,
Umi Sono Ai, “The Ocean’s Love” is symbolic of the adventure of life – both the hardships
and the opportunities that one faces. In Japan, this song is recognized as a symbol of
the country’s spirit and the hope of a life fulfilled.
We Need a Little Christmas comes from the Broadway musical Mame by Jerry
Herman, who also wrote the music for Holly, Dolly! and La Cage aux Folles. In his 1996
memoir Showtune, Herman sought to “tell the story of a gay man in America who was
comfortable with that persuasion.” The song’s quick pace and bright tune reflect a
desire to get wrapped up in the holiday spirit.
Joy to the World is a mash-up of the traditional carol and the piece of the same name
by Hoyt Axton and made famous by Three Dog Night in 1970. The arrangement of
the traditional carol was done by Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff for Carey’s 2006
album “Merry Christmas.”
