Report. In this issue you’ll find donor
highlight stories, a summary of our
2013 Golf Outing, a highlight of
our recently launched $5 million
capital campaign and a listing of our
generous donors from July 1, 2012 –
Sept. 30, 2013.
As we enter the holiday season, many
of us are making plans to spend time
with family, friends and loved ones.
At On With Life, we’re reminded
every day of the importance of these
connections – grandchildren visiting a
grandfather who recently experienced
a stroke, a husband who has barely
left his wife’s side since she arrived
following a car accident, or a team of
work colleagues who surprise their
loved co-worker with a celebratory
send-off when he/she “graduates”
from On With Life.
The common themes here are love
and generosity, and they are also why

A Garden for the Senses
The vision for a sensory stimulation
garden at On With Life’s Long-Term
Skilled Care Program began nearly two
years ago with student volunteers and
recreational therapy staff. Now known
as the OWL’s Nest, a once overgrown,
weed-filled outdoor space has been
transformed into a healing garden that
rivals some of the best therapeutic
gardens in the country.
After securing an unused outdoor space
from the Glenwood Resource Center
in 2012, a grassroots effort began to
gather the resources needed to renovate
the space and convert it into an area
that could be used by persons served,
families and staff. Then, after applying
for and receiving a $6,000 grant from
Home Depot, the OWL’s Nest started to
become a reality.
Today, the roughly 6,000 square foot
area includes a gazebo with a wheelchair
accessible ramp, a wheelchair swing, an
outdoor grill with seating for an entire
family and a memorial garden. A variety
of unique features stimulate the senses
including bird baths, wind chimes, solar
lights, kinetic spinners and sand.
“The transformation so far has been
amazing,” says Dick Achenbach,
administrator of the Long-Term Skilled
Care Program. “But we still have
more work to do to achieve our vision,
including an idea to create an outdoor
movie area. We’ve had so many people
come together to make this outdoor
garden a wonderful space for our
persons served and families, it truly has
been a team effort.”
The Benefits
Sensory gardens are designed with
the intention of providing experiences
for seeing, smelling, hearing, touching,
and tasting, and while they can benefit
people of all ages, individuals with
a disability may find it even more
enjoyable.
“It is common in people who have an
impairment of one of their five senses,
which is often the case in brain injury
survivors, to have enhanced awareness
of their other senses,” explains Jeni
Durfey, theraputic recreation coordinator
in the Long-Term Skilled Care Program.
“The benefits of participating in outdoor
activities are endless for the people we
serve. Feeling the sun on their face,
the wind in their hair or the snowflakes
on their tongue – they all stimulate
memories and heighten the senses.”

The Lynk Family
It was a physician’s recommendation
that brought Katy Lynk to On With Life
in January, 2009. A weather related car
accident the month prior had left Katy with
a severe traumatic brain injury and her
parents, Gary and Dee Lynk, didn’t know
where to turn.
“We weren’t sure where we’d go
once Katy was discharged from
the hospital,” said Dee. “We
were preparing to travel
out-of-state when Katy’s
physician in Waterloo, Dr.
Joseph Nora, told us that
if it was his daughter,
he’d go to On With Life.
That was exactly what we
needed to hear.”
Katy spent nearly
six months receiving
rehabilitation at On With Life
and the Lynks quickly realized
they had made the right decision,
calling On With Life one of Iowa’s
“best kept secrets.” One of the
areas that impressed the family was the
therapists’ willingness to try new things and
think outside of the box.
“It was amazing to see the different types
of therapy that were utilized during Katy’s
rehabilitation,” recalls Gary. “I remember
being skeptical when the therapists wanted

to take Katy, who was still in a minimally
responsive state, to the bowling alley.”
Gary attended the outing with Katy and
realized that the everyday things we take for
granted were actually forms of therapy for
Katy.
“The sensation of different temperatures
and intensities of light when you go outside,
the feeling of motion as you travel in a
vehicle, or the sounds of the bowling alley –
pins being knocked over, voices and arcade
machines – these were all forms of therapy
for Katy,” explains Gary. “It was an amazing
thing to see and experience.”
It was also the little things the staff did that
made On With Life a special place for the
Lynk family.
“I remember the flood of emotions I felt
when I received an email from the staff
with a video of Katy’s first steps after her
accident and the subject line ‘Here I come
Mom’,” says Dee. “These are the things
that set On With Life apart and the reason
we choose to give to the On With Life
Foundation. We want this facility to be here
for others who find themselves in a similar
situation.”
Today, Katy and family are keeping very
busy, with Katy not only continuing therapy
of her own, but volunteering her time to
help others make their own strides.
The Ose Family
It was 5:30 a.m. on a rainy, November
morning, when Judy and Carroll Ose received
a call every parent fears. Their daughter
Lindsey, 20, had been hit head-on by another
vehicle. At the time, Lindsey was a nursing
student at the University of Iowa and was
traveling with a friend to Muscatine, Iowa, for
a nursing practicum. The Oses were informed
Lindsey had sustained a severe traumatic brain
injury, a ruptured spleen, several broken bones
and was admitted to the University of Iowa
Hospital in a coma.
When the Oses arrived at the hospital, doctors
told them they weren’t sure Lindsey would
live. Four weeks after her accident, Lindsey
was admitted to On With Life where she
participated in intensive therapy as she began
to regain consciousness. Staff helped her
relearn how to walk, speak and swallow as
she worked to get her life back.
“On With Life was an amazing place for us
during a very difficult time,” says Carroll.
“They provided support, humor, patience – we
couldn’t have asked for a better experience.”
For a family deep-rooted in Iowa values,
giving back has always been a priority. Ten
years after an accident that
changed their lives, the
Oses continue to donate
to On With Life.
“We are grateful to be
able to give back and
are happy to support
an organization that
truly helps families
when they need it
most,” explains Carroll.
“We would’ve never
expected something like
this to happen to our family,
but it’s important that a place
like On With Life exists for
those times when the unexpected
does happen.”
Lindsey continues to be an inspiration to
others with her progress and recovery. In
December of 2008 she graduated from
the University of Iowa with a degree in
communications. Lindsey is now happily
married in Marion, Iowa, with her husband,
Jonathan, and they are looking forward to
starting a family.
Dave Reedy
When Dave Reedy began working at On
With life 11 years ago as a member of the
Environmental Services team he immediately
saw the importance in supporting the
organization. For Dave, giving back is second
nature, something that just seems like the
right thing to do.
“It’s important to me that I support the
mission of On With Life,” says Dave. “How
can we ask other people to give if we don’t
support our own cause?”
“Our mission is important because
we help a group of people and
their families get their life
back,” said Dave. “There
is no better feeling than
knowing my support
is directly helping the
people we serve and
providing the services
and equipment necessary
to help improve their
life.”
Over the years, Dave has found that simple
philanthropy was not enough; he needed
to get directly involved. Dave began putting
his time and energy, as well as money, into
supporting brain injury survivors and their
families. Dave has continually donated to On
With Life through a regular payroll deduction,
participated in the annual On With Life golf
outing and regularly volunteers at events.

his father, who also placed
great importance in giving and
was always willing to help others.
Donors are the heart of the On With
Life Foundation, and with the generosity
from people like Dave, we are able to
improve the lives of others.

On With Life has served individuals with
brain injuries and their families for more
than 22 years, growing from a Post-Acute
Inpatient Rehabilitation program in Ankeny,
Iowa with less than two-dozen beds, to
nearly 60 beds spread across two campuses.
On With Life now offers a continuum of
services including Long-Term Skilled
Care, Outpatient Neuro Rehabilitation,
a capital campaign
On With Life can credit a good deal of its success in
helping others, and its ability to expand its services, to
the generosity of the thousands of individuals who have
supported On With Life with their time and financial gifts
over the years. On With Life is excited to launch “Life
Forward,” a new capital campaign project kicking off in late
2013 for major program and property enhancements.
“While we’ve been fortunate over the years to have the
financial support of the city of Ankeny, the state of Iowa,
our donors, funders, vendors, and individuals whom we’ve
served and their families, this is the first time we’ve ever
formally asked the community to help us expand,” says
Julie Fidler Dixon, executive director of On With Life.
On With Life is constantly striving to improve services
and meet the needs of persons served, but have reached
a pinnacle in terms of what can be done with the current
facility and properties.

“Our Inpatient Rehabilitation program runs full or nearly full
with a consistent waiting list, and there are services, such
as aquatic therapy, which we just can’t provide at the level
that the individuals we serve really need,” says Dixon.
“Many of the people we serve could benefit from aquatic
therapy every day. However, with the necessity of traveling
to an off-site pool, we are very limited in what we can do.
An on-site aquatic therapy pool would mean the world to the
individuals we serve and their families.”
An on-site aquatic therapy pool is among the most
frequently requested amenities that families inquire about.
Families and community members have even been
donating to a “pool fund” for many years, hoping to bring
On With Life closer to being able to begin the more than $1
million project.
“Having a pool at On With Life would give us a vital tool
in being able to get our bodies back to whole again,” says
Jane Foust, a person served who has seen
first-hand the benefits of aquatic therapy. “With
an on-site pool, we wouldn’t have to travel or
wait, and we could have aquatic therapy more
often than once every few weeks. When in
the pool I feel like I’m whole again. I feel like I
can stand and walk perfectly, as if my right side
isn’t paralyzed.”

The On With Life Foundation
successfully raised more than $56,000
to benefit those living with a brain
injury during its 7th Annual Golf Outing
and Silent Auction. Held at Otter Creek
Golf Course, the nearly 125 golfers,
as well as 50 additional attendees
who joined us for dinner, enjoyed a
wonderful golfing day and evening
program that included a silent auction
and presentation from honorary event
co-chairs, Barb and Lizz Cassler. Lizz
received rehabilitation at On With
Life in 2009 after sustaining a severe
traumatic brain injury following a car
crash in December, 2008. Lizz and
Barb shared an inspiring message of
hope and determination and spoke to
what it meant to have an organization
like On With Life available to them.
Proceeds from the event, which have
totaled close to $300,000 in the last
seven years, go
directly to those we
serve by providing
them with the equipment needed to
assist in their rehabilitation. This year’s
event allowed us to purchase multiple
items, including:
• Infrared goggles that will allow for
observation and video recording
while performing vestibular
rehabilitation therapy. The
lightweight goggles can produce a
completely dark environment.
• Treatment supplies for lymphedema
management, a common condition
in traumatic injuries caused by a
blockage in the lymphatic system.
• Airloss mattresses that promote
comfort and reduce the risk of
pressure ulcer development.
• New Vander Lifts for assisting in the
safe transfer of patients.
• Elevating therapy tables that will
assist in speech, language and
cognitive interventions.
• Standing rocker boards that are ideal
for addressing high-level balance
deficits.
Nearly 45 organizations and families
supported the 7th annual event
through various forms of sponsorship.
Platinum sponsors included American

Volunteers are the only human
beings on the face of the
earth who reflect this nation’s
compassion, unselfish caring,
patience, and just plain loving
one another.

Sometimes the greatest things happen just
by chance, and in the case of Janelle Conley,
it happened shortly after a 2011 newspaper
article about volunteering at On With Life.
“I was looking for a way to volunteer my
time and when I came across the On With
Life volunteer opportunity, I thought it
sounded like something I’d enjoy,” explains
Janelle. “The first time I volunteered I was
hooked! I couldn’t wait to go back and I still
feel that way today.”
Janelle started volunteering in June of 2011,
soon after retiring from Odebolt –Arthur,
Battle Creek-Ida Grove School, where she
taught K-8 Vocal Music. Janelle spends her
time at On With Life helping with the music
therapy program, visiting with persons
served, assisting at special events and
performing a variety of clerical tasks. Two
years into volunteering, Janelle realizes
that she has gotten so much more out of
volunteering than she initially anticipated.

“The positive energy at On With Life radiates
from every person,” said Janelle. “Observing
the interaction between all staff members
and the person served, and noting the
progress they make every week is definitely
a highlight and an amazing thing to be a
part of.”
With a nonprofit organization of this size,
every volunteer and their contributions are
truly invaluable.
“Volunteers like Janelle continually humble
staff and honor persons served by their
willingness to donate their time to go above
and beyond to serve those with a brain injury,
and for that we are extremely thankful,” says
Ann Lenaghan, volunteer coordinator at On
With Life.
