Focus on AVANTGARDEN—The Art Gallery by Christine Terrisse and Matt Olson A Winter’s Sale F OR THE LAST Art Walk of 2014 , the featured artist was long-time resident artist Jacquemo, who is respected for his visionary abstract art and high-quality documentary-style photography of the Art Walks. From Jacquemo’s bio: “The principle success of the artist’s expression is the invocation of strong emotion for the viewer. To that end, Jacquemo’s art reflects an open communication with the creative force of life.” The Holiday Sale, which consisted of vendors selling small and inexpensive works of art as stocking stuffers, returned to Avantgarden in December and was a success. In December, the gallery also hosted the Give Art with Your Heart art supply drive for the Orange County Educational Arts Academy. Led and organized by Avantgarden resident artists Yenny Bernal and Jessica Shy, who also work together at OC Art Studios, the drive took place at both the December and January Art Walks in Avantgarden, as well as other local venues and was successful in collecting art supplies for local classrooms in need. His upcycled work proved popular — with four works sold. In January, a different sort of featured artist was chosen. Martin Euchler, who passed away two years ago, was remembered by friends who loaned their paintings to the gallery, including Theo Hirsch and resident artists Matthew Southgate and Yenny Bernal. In years prior, Euchler had shown in Southgate’s Studio del Sotano, which was a neighbor of Avantgarden for many years in the Santora Building basement. About Euchler’s work, Southgate said, “Martin specialized in acrylic Expressionistic Realism with a focus on historic irony. Themes such as gender confusion, celebrity worship and artistic fame were subjects that he played with creatively.” In January, Avantgarden welcomed new artists Carlos Echegoyen and Sarah Torstvet. Torstvet’s colorful, imaginative paintings were a hit, with four sales at the Art Walk. I also design and construct the frames of solid hard woods and metal accents. My art represents four ancient and primary building materials: stone, wood, metal and glass. As far back as I can remember I liked drawing and painting. Creativity has always been important to me and I enjoy working with my hands. Throughout my formal education I majored in fine art and commercial art. A native of Southern California, I was raised in Pasadena and moved to La Jolla in 1969 where I owned and operated an art and gift store. It was during those years that I traveled the world. I moved to Hawaii in 1979 and lived there through the eighties, until I returned to California in 1991. While in Hawaii, I released a series of original acrylic paintings on canvas and hand-pulled limited edition serigraphs. These images were exhibited in several one man shows in Honolulu. In 1992 I attended Platt College in Orange County and received a degree in computer graphics and web design in 2000. I have worked in all phases of the commercial creative process, developing advertising and marketing tools for in-house marketing departments, design studios, individual clients and advertising agencies in Hawaii and California. In 2002 and 2003 I attended Mission Renaissance Fine Art Academy where I studied sketching, composition, color theory and different techniques of representational painting with oils on canvas. I’ve been painting ever since. 2014 membership show reception Annette Globits Photographer Ed Perez and wife Jila Hakimi and Russell McCall NEXT MEETING: February 19 OCFA General Meetings will be held quarterly and consist of organizational information, refreshments and club art competitions.
