Governor’s Message
Special Message from Governor David Y. Ige
In Recognition of
The 10th Annual Big Island Film Festival
May 21-25, 2015
On behalf of the people of Hawai‘i, I extend a heartfelt aloha to
the filmmakers, sponsors, special guests, and patrons of the
10th Annual Big Island Film Festival.
For the past decade, the Big Island Film Festival has brought
filmmakers and film lovers together to celebrate narrative films
in the Hawaiian “Talk Story” tradition. The festival encourages a
relaxed viewing atmosphere as well as a healthy competition
among entrants for the coveted “Best of the Fest” and “Golden
Honu” honors.
Army Medical Center.
This year, in addition to viewing fine independent films, festival
goers have the opportunity to participate in filmmaker
workshops, attend the “Taste of the Movies” culinary experience,
and bid in the silent auction supporting Fisher House at Tripler
Mahalo, to the organizers for hosting their tenth unique festival. May the Big Island Film
Festival continue to grow and inspire for years to come.
Sincerely,
DAVID Y. IGE
Governor, State of Hawai‘i

Film Commissoner’s Message
‘Ano ‘ai ke aloha!
The Big Island Film Office is proud to welcome you to the 10th annual Big Island Film Festival, the
premiere gathering of filmmakers and film lovers on Hawai‘i Island. These five days at the beautiful
Fairmont Orchid Hawai‘i Resort and The Shops at Mauna Lani will feature 49 independent featurelength and short films, valuable educational workshops, and ample opportunity to get to know each
other and your favorite filmmakers.
It is truly an honor to serve the people of Hawai‘i Island and the film industry as your film
commissioner. It is an exciting time for visual storytellers on Hawai‘i Island, with initiatives like
PBS’s Hiki No statewide student news network and the GVS Transmedia Accelerator empowering
members of our local creative community to express their ideas right here at home. Thirteen of
the films in this year’s festival are from Hawai‘i, and six of those from right here on Hawai‘i Island.
As our island’s film industry grows, we hope to see more and more Hawai‘i Island films on screens
here and around the world.
Hawai‘i Island is truly the island of creativity – even as we gather to celebrate creative minds here at Kalahuipua‘a, Pele’s
creative fires continue to grow our island. I hope that those of you visiting for the festival get a chance to explore the
4,028 square miles of our island, rich not only in natural beauty but also in culture, tradition, and story. Please enjoy and be
inspired by our island.
Congratulations to Leo and Jan Sears on a decade of celebrating our storytellers at the Big Island Film Festival, a testament
to their selfless dedication to our community. Mahalo also to the festival’s dedicated volunteers for the many, many hours
of work that make this event possible. The Big Island Film Office is proud to support your efforts.
Aloha, T. Ilihia Gionson - Hawai‘i Island Film Commissioner
Founder & Executive Director’s Message
Ten years seems so amazing to me since our first Big Island Film Festival May 18-21, 2006. That first
festival had a total of 465 patrons. Since that time, despite a fragile economy we have grown every
year to last year’s attendance of 2442. Since that time we have continued to grow in the quality of
our movies with so many memorable narrative shorts and features from Hawaii, the US and from
around the world.
Over these ten years Jan and I have made so many friends with visiting filmmakers, our celebrities,
Hollywood professionals, press, sponsors and patrons. There are so many people to thank: our
staff and volunteers, our sponsors, our filmmakers and, of course, our patrons. I want to send out
special thanks to our government supporters: the Hawaii County CPEP program, Mayor Kenoi
and his office, Hawaii Tourism Authority, our Hawaii County film commissioners (Gionson and
Mason). I also want to give special thanks to our hosts, The Fairmont Orchid, Hawai’i and The
Shops at Mauna Lani, and their staffs. Without the support from all of these entities Big Island Film
Festival would not exist.
When I created Big Island Film Festival I wanted it to be something special that would carry on the Hawaii Talk Story
tradition and would pass on to our patrons, both resident and visitors, some Hawaiian culture and Hawaiian music. I wanted
a film festival that values filmmakers and spoils them as much as possible. I wanted a film festival that could help foster future
Hawaii filmmakers. I wanted a festival that would be a gift to my community and be a source of pride to the Island of Hawaii,
our local community and to Jan and me. Thanks to all of those I have mentioned before, Big Island Film Festival has become
one of the premiere events and is succeeding in those goals.
Mahalo to all of you involved in this success.
Aloha and Mahalo Nui Loa, Leo Sears - Founder & Executive Director

Mahalo Plenty!
Creating a film festival is like putting a giant puzzle together. In order to have this truly be a Big Island event, lots of
different people and groups come together, each providing what they do best, and becoming an active part of the final
product. As the Big Island Film Festival LLC, it is our job to bring the puzzle pieces together resulting in a truly unique and
memorable event for our residents and visitors to share each year.
It is important to acknowledge the following organizations and groups who have made this film festival possible:
· Anchor Sponsor: The Fairmont Orchid, Hawai’i with support from The Shops at Mauna Lani.
· Hawai’i County Mayor’s Office, Film Office, Department of R & D & Hawai’i Tourism Authority – CPEP grant
· Our supporting sponsors: Redeeming Light Intn’l (fiscal agent), PSAV, Hosts for events, discounted services, in-kind exchange partners, and donors.
· The Big Island Film Festival Ohana – Mahalo to all of the people behind the scenes: idea people, detail people, organizers, judges, graphics, PR, website, and volunteers. You make it happen.
· Our dedicated independent filmmakers who took their stories from concept to the screen to share with all of us this week.
· Our Film Lovers, residents and visitors who support this event each year and bring their friends.
Mahalo for the opportunity to bring you the 2015 Big Island Film Festival at The Fairmont Orchid, Hawai’i!
