These six first time WNFR qualifiers were
the most extraordinary group of new comers in quite a while.
Callie duPerier placed in six rounds and
won the average and coveted world title
with 2015 earnings of $303,846 - second
only to Lindsey Sears with 2008 season
earnings of $323,570.
Carley Richardson placed high in the third
round and hung on to a 8th place average
win even after having her first string horse,
Radio go out after a bad slip and coming
back on a back up horse.
Cassidy Kruse placed consistently in six
rounds and won 3rd in the average for huge
WNFR dividends of $126,077 and cruised
out 5th in the year end standings.
Jackie Ganter was diligent in her pursuit of
the Rookie of the Year title. She placed in
four rounds and won second in the average
for earnings of over $85,000 at her first
WNFR along with her Rookie title.
Sarah Rose McDonald entered the WNFR
in third place and kept that place even after
winning more money than any other barrel
racer with $139,827. She placed in seven
rounds and won 6th in the average.
Vickie Carter won $11,000 even. She had
a rocky start after the horse that brought her
to her inaugural NFR, Blaze Man, had colic
surgery just two weeks before the event.
She bravely climbed on different mounts
and finished just out of the average money.
Vickie took a quick plane ride home to
Utah to check on Blaze Man during the
NFR. She is devoted to her equine partner.

ERA Cowboys Can Enter Odessa,
Denver
The PRCA is allowing ERA members to
enter pending the outcome of the Dec. 29
hearing.
The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association is allowing Elite Rodeo Association
members to enter the National Western
Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver, Colo.,
and the Sandhills Stock Show and Rodeo
in Odessa, Texas, pending the ruling midJanuary from a Texas court.
"Those rodeos have a vested interest because of what they're trying to produce for
their fans," 23-time World Champion
Trevor Brazile said. "If the cowboys don't
win in the preliminary injunction, then the
ERA cowboys will be drawn out of the
rodeo. They don't know who is coming
and who's not, even though they're entered. Same way with the cowboys. The
only guys who have anything to lose are
the committees, cowboys and fans."
Brazile said he plans to enter Denver and
Odessa, as does Ryan Motes, another
plaintiff in the suit. The hearing is set for
Dec. 29, with a ruling expected mid-January. Odessa runs Jan. 8 to 16, Denver is
scheduled for Jan. 15 to 24.
Jake Barnes
A webpage dedicated to raising money for
a Jake Barnes relief fund has been started
at www.gofundme.com/56ch4pkk. The
page has raised $126,000 in just 14 days,
and has a goal of reaching $150,000 to
help Barnes and his family. The 56-yearold seven-time world champion team roping header suffered a traumatic brain
injury and a broken ankle Nov. 27 when
his horse fell while practicing at his

*Brazile captured his 23rd overall world
championship by clinching his 13th allaround gold buckle. He became the first
man to cross the $6 million mark in career
earnings and set the record for most
money earned in a season with $518,011.
Brazile now has the nine highest-earning
seasons in PRCA history, with five of
them surpassing $400,000. He also put
his name in the WNFR record books,
clocking two of the seven fastest times in
the event’s history. His 6.5-second run in
Round 8 tied Cody Ohl’s 2003 arena
record, and Brazile’s 6.6 in Round 6 set
the round record and is tied for the thirdfastest run in WNFR history. That round
win also clinched his 10th-straight allaround championship.

•Aside from Brazile in the all-around and
Kimzey in the bull riding, the only other
season earnings records that fell in 2015
were both sides of the team roping. World
Champion Header Aaron Tsinigine’s
$227,672 and World Champion Heeler
Kollin VonAhn’s $231,601 were both tops
in the event’s history.
•Kimzey and barrel racer Callie duPerier
were the only world champions who led

their events heading into the WNFR. As a
result of the shakeup at the top, there were
five first-time world champions in 2015:
Peebles (bareback riding), Tsinigine (team
roping header), Jacobs Crawley (saddle
bronc riding), Caleb Smidt (tie-down roping) and duPerier (barrel racing). This tied
the record for fewest regular-season
champions to claim a gold buckle; there
were also two in 2001.
•Clay O’Brien Cooper out-earned fellow
team roping heeler Rich Skelton by better
than a 2-1 margin at the WNFR and
moved ahead of him to sixth on the alltime earnings list with $2,902,436. Skelton held off bareback rider Bobby Mote to
stand seventh with $2,878,438.
•Despite sharing second place on the final
night, saddle bronc rider Cody DeMoss
finished the year with $1,999,439, so he
will need one more check somewhere to
become the 24th PRCA cowboy to surpass

Welcome Home Celebration for
Cowboy Capital athletes
The Stephenville Chamber of Commerce
and Cowboy Capital of the World Pro
Rodeo Association invited the community
to join them in congratulating their local
cowboys as they returned home from
competing in the Wrangler National Finals
Rodeo in Las Vegas. The official NFR
Welcome Home Celebration was held
Monday, Dec. 21 at the Cowboy Church
of Erath County.
The honorees included: Bareback Rider
Bobby Mote; Team Ropers Luke Brown,
Jake Cooper, Jade Corkill, Paul Eaves,
Travis Graves, Kory Koontz, Jake Long,
Chad Masters, Patrick Smith, Clay Tryan,
Kollin VonAhn and Travis Woodard; Saddle Bronc Riders Jacobs Crawley, Isaac
Diaz, and Cort Scheer; and Tie-Down
Ropers Sterling Smith and Marty Yates.
Guests enjoyed light refreshments and
music as they met and visited with the
NFR contestants. The program included
official remarks by Mayor Kenny Weldon
and interviews with each of the NFR qualifiers.

I’ve enjoyed several state parks over the
years, but this is the first time I was ever
kicked out of one. I was riding in the
Smokey Mts. and headed out with Camo
(my dog) running alongside. After a fairly
long ride, I came to the top of a gorgeous,
several tiered waterfall and headed on
down the road to where I could see it from
the bottom up. Well …. I came upon this
place where the road looped way on
around and down below, you could see the
road looping back. Well heck….why take
the road waaaaay around when you can
simply bail your horse over the side and go
straight down the hill?? Makes perfect
sense to me…..
I DID see a sign saying that wasn’t allowed but, I just figured that was there for
those who can’t ride. So off the hillside
we went and happily that much closer to
the desired destination.

I did happen to hear a man’s voice hollering something, but since I HAD seen the
sign that read “NOT to do”….. I figured it
best to pretend I didn’t hear. You know….
like the men do us women! Well I enjoyed
the ride, the waterfall and all else I could
explore horseback and was walking my
horse down this road when a park ranger
drove up and got out of his truck. He
seemed particularly agitated as he approached me and I could hear a couple
other guys on his radio, saying that they
“couldn’t find the girl”. He first wanted
some I.D. I’m like…. I don’t carry ID on
me when I ride! Then he wanted to know
my license plate #. “Are you kidding?” I
haven’t a CLUE what it is other than Texas
plates. So I politely told him where my
truck was parked… TX plates…. a 2 ton

Freightliner. There’s no other rig like it in
the parking lot. Well…. it seems several
Park Rangers had been scouring all over
the park trying to find me because of all
the rules I broke….. 3 to be exact. (I could
only think of 1…..ok…. 2…..i f you
counted that it was PROBABLY NOT according to their rules that I be carrying a
gun in my boot)
The Park Ranger who had me captured
started off with rule #1….. my dog wasn’t
on a leash. You are KIDDING me! Talk
about a set up for a wreck! But he assured
me the trail riders rode with their dogs on a
leash. I responded that I had dogs that
MINDED. And Camo was perfect proof
of that as I had told her to sit and stay right
beside my horse, which she did. Rule #2
was the “do not ride over the hill” one…..
yep…. got that. As we continued to visit,
I asked “why all the rules”? He answered
my questions and I understood why all this
malarkey had to be done because of the
volume of people coming through the
park. I asked him what the 3rd rule was
that I broke and he said…. “I forgot, you
got me all flustered.” I could see him visibly relaxing as he discovered I wasn’t a
trouble maker…. just a Texas cowgirl used
to riding where there wasn’t all these
ridiculous rules.
Well….even though we had an enjoyable
visit…. I still got kicked out of the park for
that day only. I actually think he was protecting me from getting a ticket from some
other agitated Park Rangers. But I made a
Park Ranger lighten up and laugh…… and
I had the good sense NOT tell him about
the pistol in my boot. Dadgum rules….
they take so much of the fun away.

Marshal a 2015 WPra World Championship

Rare Jet daughter, Rare Class. Purchased and
trained by Annesa Self, Dillon won the 2006
BFA World Championship Derby before
going to his first NFR with Self in 2008. Dillon returned to the NFR in 2011 and 2012
with Carlee Pierce. He set a new NFR arena
record of 13.46 in 2011 and helped Pierce
earn the 2012 WPRA Reserve World Championship.
Callie duPerier was so embarrassed. She’d
only been running barrels a short while
when her dad loaded her beginner barrel
horse in the trailer he used to move his
white tail deer to haul to her first Texas high
school rodeo.

“I was just a little embarrassed about the
deer trailer,” said duPerier, now 22. “It was
so beat up. I felt bad for my horse. Driving
there, it didn’t bother me, but when we got
there, ‘I was like, ‘we are in the wrong
trailer.’ My dad was like, ‘well, this is all we
have.’”
Before he put serious money into his daughter’s barrel racing effort, Trip duPerier
wanted to make darn sure it was something
that she was serious about.
“He didn’t want to go out and buy everything because he didn’t know if I was really
serious about it,” duPerier stated. “We were
kind of toughing it out. We took our Suburban and our deer trailer. It was fun. I was
just excited about getting to go out there and
run. To me, back then, it wasn’t about winning; it was about having a good time and
learning how to run barrels.” duPerier was
“getting my butt kicked” in the process, but
she didn’t quit.
“My dad said, ‘Are you serious about this?
If you are, I’ll get you a nice barrel horse.’ I
told him, ‘Yeah, I really am. I want to try it
for a while.’ He went out and bought a nice
barrel horse,and I started placing in the high
school rodeos. I got completely hooked, so
he went out and bought a couple more
horses. That’s when we started going to
jackpots every weekend and high school
rodeos.”
Ten years later, the duPerier family pulled
into Las Vegas, Nevada, for the Wrangler
National Finals Rodeo. duPerier was No.1
in the world standings and had one of the
sports icons in her trailer – the 15-year-old
gelding Rare Dillion—the only horse to
qualify three different riders for the big
dance in Vegas. Using the same philosophy
that taught her the ropes in the early years—
trust the horse and have fun—duPerier left
Vegas as the 2015 WNFR Champion and
WPRA World Champion.

lady said, ‘let’s do an interview, you won…’
I just started crying. It was really awesome. I
had no idea!”
“It’s an awesome feeling,” she said. “I can’t
believe it actually happened. It was just so
exciting to actually get there. I know how
much it meant to my family. We’ve been
dreaming of this day since we started.”
She said Dillon’s experience was the key to
controlling her nerves throughout the
WNFR.
The Race
To avoid added pressure, duPerier never
asked to know how she was sitting in the
world standings.
“My dad does all the numbers, but I told him
not to tell me because I’d get nervous,” she
said. So, other than knowing she won the average after her 10th run, she hadn’t a clue
how the world title race played out. “My run
in Round 10 wasn’t very good,” she said.
“We slipped a little on the third barrel. I
thought, ‘Oh darn!’ I didn’t know if we had
to place to win the world. When I came out
of the arena, they told me to get on the (victory lap) horse. I knew I had won the average
because I didn’t hit a barrel. I had to get off
the horse to get my average saddle and picture in the arena. As I was walking up the

said. “I trust him so much, knowing that he’s
been there before. At Houston, I was really
nervous and I just thought to myself, ‘He’s
been here before and he’ll take care of me.’ I
ended up doing really well there. I just
thought back to all the big rodeos we had
been to this year, and I knew Dillon would
take care of me. He always takes care of me.
I just leaned on Dillon. I told myself, ‘it’s
just another rodeo. Dillon’s going to take
care of me. Just go have fun.’”
The Horse
duPerier had filled her permit on the same
horses she ran in high school and was
shocked to find Dillon in her barn one day.

Roller, Dillon is by Firecracker Fire, a son of
the legendary Fire Water Flit out of Dashing
Rose, by Dash With Vigor. His dam is the
“I remember Dillon being in the barn when I
got home one day,” she recalled, “and I was
like ‘No way.’ My rookie year was my first
year to actually haul Dillon. We were just
starting to get together that year. This year, I
think we really got our timing figured out
and got everything together.”
duPerier is the first of Dillon’s riders to get
him through 10 clean runs at the Thomas &
Mack.
“After my dad told me that, it was an awesome feeling,” she said. “I’m not going to
lie, when I first got Dillon, I was thinking,
‘Oh my gosh, what are people going think?
What if I can’t ride him? What if we do bad?
People are going to talk all kinds of stuff
about me.’ To get with him and be able to get
around the barrels all 10 times at the NFR, is
just an awesome feeling. “He’s such an awesome horse. To be able to adjust to the different riders, is just crazy. When I first got him
and I’d watch videos of him, I’d think there
is no way I could ride him. We called Annessa and she came down and helped me.
Throughout my rodeo year, I would call Annessa or call Carlee…it was great to have all
of them there for me.”
The Journey
duPerier didn’t start barrel racing until she
was 13.
“We grew up on a ranch and had always had
horses,” she explained. “They were just trail
riding horses for ranch riding. A few of my
friends did the 4H stuff—where they do barrels, poles and straights and all that stuff.
They invited me and my dad to come out and
watch one night. I said to my dad, ‘That’s so
cool. Can I try it?’” Her father bought her a
seasoned horse to show her the ropes.
“It wasn’t super-fast or anything,” she remembered fondly. “It was just teaching me
how to ride and go through the barrels. We
ran the same time, every time—18 seconds
in the barrels and 25 in the poles.”

As it became apparent that her first horse
wouldn’t cut it in high school rodeo,
duPerier got better, and better horses.
“The first horses that I had in high school
came from Robert Jordan in Florida,” she
said. “He helped me a lot with my riding
and getting in tune with my horses.”
Jordan is just one name of many who have
helped duPerier over the years. Whenever
her father purchased a horse, they made it a
point to get in touch with the horse’s trainer
and other previous owners.
“My dad and I are really big on whoever
trained the horse is who you go back to,”
she said. “You’ve got to go back to how
they started. Anytime we’d get a new horse,
we’d call who trained them and ask about
them. We’d even call the people who
owned them previously. We wanted to find
out everything about them.”
After winning the WPRA Junior World
Champion title in 2010, duPerier’s family,
especially her dad and older brother TJ, were
ready for her to hit the road in pursuit of the
NFR. But, she wasn’t so sure.

had a really good chance
at going, and they were a
little upset that I put it off,
but they still supported
me.”
duPerier played volleyball
for three years at
Schreiner University in
Kerrville, Texas, before
hurting her shoulder.
“I called my dad and
asked if I could put off
college and try to make
the NFR,” she said. “My dad was like ‘Alright, let’s go.’”
duPerier said she owes a lot to fellow WNFR
qualifier Jana Bean, whom she hauled with
her rookie year in 2014, and multiple WPRA
“I put it off for a little bit,” she said. “After
World Champion Sherry Cervi, whom she
high school, I was deciding if I wanted to
hauled with this year. She said all of her felcollege and play volleyball, or put college off low competitors have been very helpful
and try to make the NFR. I chose volleyball
throughout her journey, pointing out how

helped her at the Champions Challenge in
Florida this past October.
“Fallon Taylor came up to me and said,
‘make sure you leave early and get a good
start.’ A lot of the girls were getting a late
start and didn’t have enough momentum at
the first barrel. She told me to make sure I
left by a certain point, and I won that rodeo. I
was like ‘Thank you so much Fallon!’ All the
girls help out like that. It’s fun. It’s awesome
to have people who you have always looked
up to, to get to run against them, and they’ll
still help you. It’s really cool,” she said.
duPerier said there are so many people who
have helped her along the way that it would
be impossible to list them all, but God is first
and foremost.
“They say it takes a village,” she said, “and
that’s definitely true- -my dad, my family
and friends, my horses, my vet David Dutton
and farrier Ambrose Gordon. My rookie year,
Dillon had some feet issues and I didn’t get
to run him at all the rodeos I wanted to. This
year, Dillon was the soundest he’s ever been.
My vet and my horse shoer were definitely a
big part of it. Without them I don’t know if
I would have been able to run Dillon as
much as I did.”
The Future
duPerier is scheduled to appear at the Elite
Rodeo Athlete events in 2016 and plans to attend some of the larger rodeos, but she’s has
made no secret of her future plans, which include her marriage to Kaleb Apffel in May.
“I don’t know if I want to haul as hard as I
did the past two seasons,” she said. “After I
get married I want to be able to stay home
with Kaleb and start a family.”
Dillon, however, isn’t going anywhere. His
future jockeys will be duPerier’s children.
Winning the WPRA World Championship
hasn’t really sunk in yet for duPerier, but her
family is reveling in the excitement.
“It’s started to sink in,” she said, “but I still
can’t believe it happened. My family is really
excited. My brother can’t stop talking about
it. I asked my dad if I could have a duplicate
of the buckle made so I can give it to TJ.”

IPRA Top Cowgirls IFR46 Bound

son Ty. The mare turned out to be a natural
barrel horse and within a few months
landed Tracy in the world standings.
The race for the 2015 IPRA world title is
predicted to be one of the best races of
IFR46. The roster includes the 2014 IPRA
World Champion, three rookies, six first
time IFR contenders, two that are making
their second trip, two that are making their
third appearance, and one that is making
her fourteenth IFR qualification. Five of
the ladies hail from Canada.
Carrie Putnam
Charlotte, NC.
IPRA Rookie of
the Year
Leading the standings is 25-year-old Carrie
Putnam of Charlotte, NC. This is Carrie’s
rookie year in the IPRA and she has
clinched the IPRA barrel racing rookie of
the year title. Can she make it a clean
sweep and take the world title as well, four
rounds of IFR action will tell the tale.
Twenty four-year-old Kindyl Scruggs of
Southaven, MS is making her second consecutive trip to the IFR. She is within easy
striking distance of Putman and has a solid
resume of wins during the 2015 season.
She has the advantage of competing at the
IFR previously and will use that to her advantage to try to claim the gold buckle for
herself.
Cindy Cloutier is third in the world standings and is from Mont Laurier, QU. With
only ten rodeos under her belt in the 2015
rodeo season, Cindy made her runs count
and claimed her largest win at St. Tite. The
30-year-old teaches math when not on the
road.
Hamilton, OH’s Gabrielle Oder makes her
third IFR appearance. The 24-year-old
cowgirl has been a member of the IPRA
since 2004. She competed at 30 rodeos in
2015 to get to the 4th spot in the world
standings.
Twenty-one-year-old Jade Dickinson of
Ste-Solienne, QU is another IFR freshman
barrel racer. Jade had a very successful
season at the IPRA’s Canadian rodeos and
earned the 11th seat in the world standings.
Megan Lyerly of Stony Point, NC is also a
member of the IFR freshman roster and is
twelfth in the standings. The twenty-eightyear-old has been training her own barrel
horses since the age of 15. Megan competed at 37 rodeos in 2015. She works as a
home hospice nurse.
The thirteenth lady in the standings is the
2014 IPRA World Champion Barrel Racer,
Natalie Overholt of Burr Oak, MI. This is
Overholt’s ninth trip to the State Fair
Arena. The thirty-six-year-old will be riding her super mare Casey.
Pamela Doucet of Rimouski, QU sits 5th in
the world standings and is the second member of Team Maple Leaf. Doucet had big
wins at St. Tite and Labrecque, QU. Pamela
travels with husband, Ian, and young son
Jesse.

Eighth is rookie Canadian cowgirl Sabrina
Plante of St-Ephraim, QU. The 22 year-old
competed at 14 rodeos and earned the average win at St. Tite.
Newlywed Alicia Pottmeyer Kilgus of Belpre, OH, tied the knot with IFR team roper
Zack Kilgus in December. The 28-year-old
cowgirl secured her sixth seat in the standings with her super horse Nic Of Shine.
Fellow Canadian Jessica Gauthier of
Mirabel, QU returns to her third IFR qualification. The 21 year-old cowgirl comes
from a rodeo family. She has a successful
barrel horse training business as well as her
own boutique.
Thirty-two year old Dawn Powell of Dansville, NY comes into IFR46 seventh in the
world. Powell makes her second consecutive trip to the IFR. She and steer wrestler

Peyton Morrow of Watkinsville, GA. The
eighteen-year-old cowgirl picked up checks
across the country on her way to the IFR.
Peyton is pursuing a degree in nursing.

runs through January 17, 2016 at the State

For six WPRA ladies, it was their first time to
the Super Bowl of rodeo. And for the 20 year
old Wyoming native, she added another first to
her list - her first Wrangler NFR round win.
Cassidy Kruse rode her 14 year old gelding
JKR Assured Win "JJ" to a 13.84 second run to
add over $26,000 to her 2015 earnings.
"I'm ecstatic! I instantly hugged my dad, and it
was really hard to hold my emotions together,"
Kruse said following her victory lap. She was
also quick to credit her horsepower, JJ, "I've
been riding him since I was twelve years old.
That horse deserves more of the fame I get because he's pretty amazing."
Kruse didn't get to ride JJ last year, but this
year - with the support of her family and a
healthy horse- she made it count, "When I got
on JJ this year, we as a family sat down and
made a goal to make the NFR knowing that he
was healthy and ready to go. It's been my
dream since I was about eight years old. I'm
here living my dream and it's awesome."
Kruse and JJ were predicted by many to do
well because of their success throughout the
year and in similar pens such as Omaha, and
they didn't disappoint. "This win tonight just
proves that I can do it," Kruse said with a big
smile.
Defending Wrangler NFR Barrel Racing Average Champion, Lisa Lockhart made her first
run on Louie since winning Cheyenne, to win
second place money with a time of 13.90.
World Champion Barrel Racer, Mary Walker
had also given her great horse Latte a long
break and they came back refreshed with a nice
run of 13.96 seconds to place third. Michele
McLeod was 14.07 seconds for fourth place.
First time Wrangler NFR qualifier Callie
duPerier rode the veteran horse, Dillon, to a
fifth place finish after stopping the clock with a
time of 14.08. And the final money spot went to
WPRA Rookie contender, Jackie Ganter with a
14.09 second run.
Slick run for McLeod gives her the win in
Round 2, Lockhart moved to no. 1 in the
World Standings 12/4/15
A look at the thesaurus and the synonyms for
"slick" include: efficient, smooth, polished, and
sleek which is exactly what Slick By Design
demonstrated in Round 2 of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The 8-year old black stallion and Michele McLeod turned in a time of
13.89 seconds, and according to McLeod, she
just held on for the winning ride, "It was crazy!
He was a little on the hook which he doesn't
usually be. And I was like, he's fixing to run, I
better hold on! And he for sure did it without
me cause I felt like I was falling off."
This is the second time McLeod has taken a
victory lap at the Thomas and Mack Center last year she won Round 5 on Kellies Chick
"Skye". This time though, she wants to wear
the proof. "I won a round buckle last year and
the owners got it, so with this one I'm going to
tell them they need to give it to me cause I deserve the buckle," she said while laughing.
The three time Wrangler NFR qualifier continued to smile as she recalled how much she has
wanted to top the leaderboard, "I wanted to win
a round so bad on Slick. And, I'm so glad it
happened tonight." McLeod was also grateful
that her equine partner is at the top of his game
right now, "He's feeling great. He's running
great. And I'm so excited to be back on him.
And this is just unbelievable."
The $26,000 check helped McLeod to move up
to sixth in the WPRA World Standings while
bringing her Wrangler NFR earnings to over
$47,000. She currently sits second in the Wrangler NFR Top Gun Standings.
Also on the line is the chance to win the Jerry
Ann Taylor Best Dressed Award, and although
the fans probably can't see the small details,
McLeod's earrings were perfect for being at the
Wrangler NFR. "Well Shea and Tyson Durfey
gave those to us this year, all the barrel racers
got them," McLeod explained about the custom-made earrings which are a beautiful replica
of her NFR back number. "I love them. I wore
them tonight, and I might have to wear them
the rest of the week," McLeod said while possibly showing a little superstition.
Lisa Lockhart is now No. 1 in the WPRA
World Standings thanks to her fourth place finish in Round 2. Lockhart and Louie are showcasing the consistently great runs that we've
come to expect from the spectacular duo.
The current WPRA World Champion Barrel
Racer, Fallon Taylor, finished second in the
round with a 13.93. Third place went to Sarah
Rose McDonald and Bling for making a 13.94
second run. Round 1 winner, Cassidy Kruse,
was in the money again after claiming fifth
place for her 14.03 second run. And ironically,
WPRA Rookie Jackie Ganter picked up another
sixth place finish for running a 14.09 - the
exact same time she had in round one.

seconds. 'I'm really excited! I had a good feeling about tonight, and Bo has felt better than
ever," Jacob said with a big smile.
Of course Jacob and Bo hold the arena record
with the 13.37 they set back in 2013, so she
knows what it feels like to be even faster. That
might be why she described remembering
tonight's run like this: 'It was a good run. I didn't think it was phenomenal by any means, but I
knew it was pretty good."
After hitting barrels in the two previous rounds,
making a clean run was also good for Jacob.
She took advantage of the opportunity to get in
the Thomas and Mack this morning on her 10
year old buckskin gelding, which most likely
had an impact on tonight's result. 'I asked him
for a little extra step on the backside of the second because that had cost me good money the
last two nights, so I think it helped," Jacob said
as she talked about the barrel racing practice. 'It
was a tune up and a reminder to go around
them [the barrels]. I didn't do anything much
this morning, I walked and trotted and just kind
of gently reminded him, ‘Hey, you're doing
great, but take just one more step and we'll be
good'."
They also looked good during their run by
wearing gold to support Nancy Hunter's NFR
Glitter Like Gold to help fund research to cure
childhood cancer. 'Nancy emailed us earlier this
month and told us her personal story so we all
got together and really want to support raising
awareness for childhood cancer," Jacob said
knowing that Nancy Hunter's son Colton is a
childhood cancer survivor. Jacob was wearing a
gold embellished shirt, gold earrings, and a
gold feather in her hat. Bo even took part,

but it was definitely gold feathers. We were
both supporting the cause."
Hunter's horse, Fuzz, ran with gold glitter
handprints on his hip for all the children who
are fighting or have fought a battle with cancer.
And Hunter's custom gold hat, along with other
items, will be auctioned to raise money for
childhood cancer research.
Also cashing in on the gold tonight, was Cassidy Kruse with a 13.80 to earn second. She
also sits second in the Ram Top Gun standings
with over $63,000, and first in the Wrangler
NFR Barrel Racing average standings. Current
WPRA World Champion, Fallon Taylor, and
first time Wrangler NFR qualifier, Carley
Richardson, tied for third place with 13.83 second runs. Sarah Rose McDonald picked up fifth
place for a 13.84 time. And the WPRA World
Standings leader, Lisa Lockhart, claimed the
sixth place money after running a 13.94. She
now sits second in the Wrangler NFR Barrel
Racing average standings.
Mcdonald Makes Quick Work of Round 4
It was a fast track in Round 4 of the Wrangler
National Finals Rodeo for Sarah Rose McDonald and Fame Fling N Bling. They ran a 13.71

2015. And just as we've come to expect from
this phenomenal team, Bling didn't take any
extra steps and McDonald demonstrated her
impressive riding ability. "My horse, Bling, I
have to ride her every step of the way, and it's
all or nothing every night." McDonald went on
to say, "She loves to turn very tight. She usually never goes past a barrel so I just have to sit
up there and ride her as hard as I can."

is fourth. It makes for an exciting race, especially since there is still the possibility for any
contestant to win just over $145,000 with the
top money that's up for grabs in three rounds
and the average.
With all the numbers and possibilities, McDonald is taking it one night at a time, "My horse is
working awesome. She feels good. She's running hard every night, and I'm just trying to go
into each night with a clear mind." She has also
gained some inspiration from the nightly contestant devotionals that take place in the warmup tent. "There's a guy in the tent who gives the
prayer sessions every night and he told us, ‘If
you believe you can do it, then you can do it' so
I've been trying to have that attitude."
Because the draw rotates every night, the barrels racers all get their turn at being at the top

all the runs. "Then I'll go back and watch my

can pick up that I did right or maybe something
that I can try to fix for the next round," McDonald said.
She also keeps the same routine every night on
Bling, and said, "She's gotten into the groove.
She's running great, and it's just an amazing experience here."
In a round where number one and two in the
average, Lisa Lockhart and Cassidy Kruse, hit
barrels; Callie DuPerier capitalized on the opportunity to gain some ground. She finished
second with a 13.87 and moved up to number
one in the average. Michele McLeod turned in
a time of 13.95 to pick up third place money.
Jane Bean won her first check of the WNFR for
placing fourth with a 14.01 second run. Jackie
Ganter ran a 14.09 for the third time - rounds 1
and 2 she ran 14.09 which placed sixth each
time. This time it ended up fifth, and Ganter is
now second in the average. Deb Guelly earned
her first check of the WNFR with a 14.17
which was sixth place money.
McLeod makes quick work of Round 8
Everything was on point tonight for Michele
McLeod and Slick by Design. They made a
beautiful run of 13.72 seconds to win Round 8
of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. "Slick
is feeling really good and running really hard.
We're moving back up to the top of the ground
and it couldn't have come at a better time,"
McLeod said after taking her victory lap. She
also talked about the training her 8 year old
black stallion has been getting, "Ron Ralls, a
world champion horse trainer, has been working with Slick and has done a great job with his
feet placement and just his overall attitude. I really give him a lot of credit."
McLeod also won the second round and has
placed in two others. "It's an unbelievable finals; but best of all, I'm having fun. Slick's
happy, he's healthy, and he's loving every night
he comes here. And, I'm enjoying every minute
of it," the Whitesboro, Texas barrel racer said.
McLeod is also enjoying wearing her Montana
Silversmiths buckle from her first ever round
win at the Wrangler NFR, "I've been wearing it
since round 3, so I'm not going to take it off."
Although McLeod shares barrel horses with her
daughters, Katelyn and Lindsey, at one point
during the regular rodeo season, it was decided
that she needed first priority to get qualified for
the Wrangler NFR, "Actually, it was Katelyn
that brought up the idea. She's the one that said
I needed to take him [Slick] so I could make it
here again." McLeod went on to describe her
relationship with her daughters and their love
for barrel racing, "It's unbelievable. It's a feeling I can't describe and it makes me so happy to
have them competing and doing what they absolutely love like I do." When they are home,
they all ride together, but this summer, Michele
and Katelyn were on the road together. McLeod
lit up as she said, "It was a ball. I'm blessed to
have this life."
Another barrel racer who has talked before
about being blessed to do what she loves is current WPRA World Champion Barrel Racer Fallon Taylor who finished second with a time of
13.81. Taylor Jacob continued her winning
ways by clocking a 13.83 to place third. Fourth
was split by Callie duPerier and Nancy Hunter
for a pair of 13.87 times. duPerier continues to
lead the average, and, Jana Bean claimed sixth
for running a 13.88 in what turned out to be a
fast round with nine sub-fourteen second runs.
Lisa Lockhart was last out on the ground and
tipped the first barrel which added five seconds
to her 13.69. That dropped her to seventh in the
average. Sarah Rose McDonald wasn't able to
increase her lead in the WPRA World Standings
however, because her 13.99 run didn't place in
the money. She is currently third in the average
as the race for the 2015 WPRA World Champion Barrel Racer continues.
That support helped Bean throughout the year
as she competed at nearly three times more
rodeos during the regular season than some of
the other WNFR qualifiers. Bean described the
road to get to the Thomas and Mack by saying,
"It is probably one of the hardest things you've
ever done. There are lots of ups, lots of
downs...maybe sometimes more downs than
ups. You just have to remember what your goal
was when you started, and through those hard
times you just have to try to stay strong and
keep your faith."
Fourteen other barrel racers achieved their goal
of qualifying for the WNFR this year; and tomorrow, one will realize a dream come true as
the 2015 WPRA World Champion Barrel Racer
will be decided. The ninth round shook things
up as Sarah Rose McDonald tipped a barrel.

him," Bean said about the 8 year old gelding's

Bean didn't pick up a check until the seventh
round, but since then she has made clean, faster
runs, "I seem to sometimes start slow and finish
strong. I don't really know that I like my pattern," she said laughing. Then Bean said, "But
I'm enjoying it right now. I'm very blessed and
thankful to have this opportunity."
Bean is also grateful to be riding Hammer, who
belongs to Rick and Terry Ford. "I was super
blessed when they called and asked me if I
wanted to ride Hammer. It's just kind of been a
God-thing," Jana said of the partnership that
started the end of May. In addition to a great
horse and his owners who have become true
friends with Bean, she also has her family to
thank, "My family is so supportive and always
behind me. I couldn't ask for anything better."
duPerier Crowned 2015 WPRA World
Champion Round 10 12/12/15
Callie duPerier came into her first Wrangler
National Finals Rodeo leading the WPRA Barrel Racing World Standings and second to only
Trevor Brazile in money won during the regular season. Through 10 nights of the top 15 barrel racers in the world vying for the gold
buckle, duPerier's consistency paid off. She
earned the Wrangler NFR Average Barrel Racing Championship with 140.41 seconds, and
that $67,269 check increased her total earnings
to $303,846 which gave her over an $18,000
lead over Lisa Lockhart.
"My dad always does the numbers, but I told
him not to tell me cause I don't want to know,"
duPerier said following her victory lap and average saddle presentation in the arena. "I
thought I was just taking the victory lap for the
average, which I was super excited about. And
then they told me I won the world and I just
started crying. It is so awesome! I thank God
first, and my dad and Dillon and just everyone
that has been behind me this year," duPerier
said as tried to take in the news that she is the
2015 WPRA World Champion Barrel Racer. "I
can't believe it." Then the Boerne, Texas cowgirl went on to say, "I was so happy to get here

and my mind was set to come here and do the
best I can and if I won, it would be great; but if
I didn't, it would be okay. To have accomplished this is just awesome."
duPerier also talked about the reality of the 10
day competition in Las Vegas, "It was definitely exhausting. I can't imagine how the
horses feel. All the horses are amazing athletes
here to come out here every night and do what
they do." duPerier's horse is the phenomenal 16
year old buckskin, Rare Dillon, who has a list
of accomplishments at the WNFR with previous owners, Annesa Self and Carlee Pierce. If
fact, duPerier joked before the start of the
WNFR that she was just going to close her eyes
and let Dillon do his thing. Laughing, duPerier
confirmed, "I had my eyes open and I just hustled him." She also called Annesa and Carlee
for advice, "When I first started off, I had trouble getting that first barrel down because I was
worried about him getting in the alley. They
just told me, you've got to get his shoulder up
and get on that left side. We finally figured it
out, and it worked out awesome."
Aside from barrel racing, duPerier has some
other plans in the near future, "I'm going to go
back home and do some wedding planning. I
get married in May, and after that I can't wait to
have kids. I want to have five so I have to get
started early."
Now looking at the other results, the fastest run
of the finals happened tonight. Sherry Cervi
was 13.55 on Dash Ta Diamonds "Arson", the 9
year old sorrel gelding that belongs to duPerier.
It was Cervi's first check of the 2015 Wrangler
NFR. Sarah Rose McDonald ran a 13.77 to
place second in the round, sixth in the average,
and third in the world standings. Jackie Ganter
ran a 13.85 to place third in the round and second in the average. She also won WPRA Barrel
Racing Rookie of the Year. Lisa Lockhart made
the crowd erupt when she held up the second
barrel to finish fourth in the round with a 13.88,
second in the world standings, and seventh in
the average. Fallon Taylor was 13.91 for fifth in
the round, and Cassidy Kruse finished off a
great finals by running a 13.92 for sixth in the
round, third in the average, and fifth in the
world standings. Michele McLeod ended up
fourth in the average and fourth in the world
standings. The top 5 barrel racers had final
earnings above $200,000 each for an impressive finish to 2015.
Fallon Taylor took home the 2015 Jerry Ann
Taylor Best Dressed Award followed by Sarah
Rose McDonald and Mary Walker.

Veteran barrel horse trainer Brett Monroe
has competed at the BFA World Championship 28-years. In those 28-years, Monroe has won 7 titles including 2 Futurity
Championships, 2 Derby Championships,
1 Sweepstakes Championship and now
he can add a Super- Stakes Championship to that very impressive list of
prestigious titles.
Monroe jockeyed JK Reckless Lady,
owned by Chad Hart, to the SuperStakes
win when he blazed the cloverleaf pattern
in 15.392-seconds. JK Reckless Lady is a
2012 mare by Docs Getting Reckless
and out of Bashful Dash by Royal Quick
Dash.
“I brought her home from the LG Pro
Classic in Kinder last February. She is a
full sister to World Champion, HM Cornerstone. She is a very sweet natured horse
especially being a mare,” explained Monroe.
While prepping for the BFA, Monroe’s
biggest goal was to have his colts working
the best that they could before making the
trek to Oklahoma City.
“You just never know with horses this
young, what they are going to do at such a
big event. The SuperStakes is always such
a fun and interesting race to watch because
it’s a lot to expect from a 3-year-old and
also because there are always some very
nice colts. This years’ SuperStakes was a
great race with several very nice colts.”

Next on the sale topper’s list was Guysluvprettygirls, a 2-yearold bay mare, by alltime leading living sire Frenchmans Guy
out of Dashing Katye, by all-time leading
sire Dash Ta Fame. Dashing Katye, whose
oldest foal was a 3-year-old, was an EquiStat earner of $2,166. She was consigned
by T Barrel Ranch, acting as agent for
Doug Hughes, and purchased for $30,000
by FC Ranch, Alex, Okla.
A pair of $28,000 purchases rounded out
the top three. Consigned by Jim and Stacy
Warner, Justa French Fling, a 2-year-old
palomino mare by A Streak Of Fling out of
Frenchmans Lingerie, by Frenchmans Guy,
was purchased by Joe Spitz, Lamar, Colo.
Consigned by DHR Whata Boogy Girl, a
2-year-old black mare by Oh Whatta Boy
out of Boogying Martha, by the former
leading barrel horse sire Marthas Six
Moons, was purchased by Gayle Howes,

A Streak Of Scarlett, a yearling colt,
topped the highest-grossing BFA World
Championship Horse Sale of all time. With
107 of the 113 consigned head walking
through the ring, the sale grossed
$1,079,450.
A Streak Of Scarlett, a stunning sorrel,
yearling colt, was consigned by Jim and
Ruth Haislip of Acampo, Calif. The son of
leading sire A Streak Of Fling—who at the
time of the sale had two go-round wins at
the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las
Vegas, thanks to his daughter Fame Fling
N Bling, ridden by Sarah McDonald—was
out of Haislip’s three-time NFR qualifier
Go Royal Scarlett, by Royal Go Go. Go
Royal Scarlett has produced 2015 WNFR
qualifier Royal Star Commander, a former
BFA Derby Champion and arena record
holder, California Circuit Finalist and multiple derby finalist Famous Scarlett and
multiple futurity and derby finalist Royal
And Famous.
The colt was purchased by Jackie Jatzlau,
acting as agent for Suzanne Hill of Kirbyville, Texas, who also purchased last
year’s high-seller Promises To Streak.
