trio kaliya - Kai Schumacher
TRIO KALIYA
Yana Dukanova | Violin
Elif Dimli | Violoncello
Kai Schumacher | Piano
Since the foundation of the Trio in 2007 – at that time
still known as Trio Kayana – have the three young
musicians always been considerate of presenting
their audience with an exiting and extraordinary
mixture of classical pieces of the Trio Literature as
well as unknown works of the present and the past.
The concerts of the three young musicians are neither
holy classical temple nor crossover-supermarket. In
fact, they are moving beyond all stylistic categories –
and they do it well. The collaboration with musicians
like Troels Svane, Wolf Harden (Trio Fontenay) and
Dirk Mommertz (Fauré-Quartet) are for the Trio
equally inspiring as projects with the German
producer and turntable artist DJ Illvibe (Seeed, Peter
Fox). Pieces of the Swiss jazz composer Daniel
Schnyder are neatly mixed in the Trio’s concert
repertoire with the great piano trios of Schubert:
regardless playing on the stage of Essen
Philharmonics or in a vibrant alternative culture
scene.
During their studies in the chamber music class
of Prof. Andreas Reiner (Rosamunde-Quartett) at
the Folkwang University in Essen, Germany, the
Trio received the advancement award of the
Köhler-Osbahr- Stiftung. Additionally, they were
granted a scholarship at the Villa Musica in
September 2009. When in 2010 Elif Dimili joined
the Trio as new cellist the Trios name was
changed to TRIO KALIYA. One of the upcoming
projects of the trio is the performance of the
Triple concertos by Ludwig van Beethoven and
Daniel Schnyder (first performance in Germany)
in March 2012.
Born into an artistic family, Yana Dukanova started her violin studies at the National
School of Arts in Ruse, Bulgaria. She furthered her music education at the National
Music Academy of Sofia, developing at the same time under the musical guidance of
professors such as Ifrah Neaman, Viktor Tretiakov, Petru Munteanu, Serjio Shwarz,
Mincho Minchev and Michael Frischenschlager. Yana was the recipient of many
prizes of national and international competitions including First Prize in the National
Competition “Svetoslav Obretenov” and Second Prize in the International
Competition “Hopes, Talents, Masters”. She also performed regularly as a soloist in
Bulgaria, Romania, Greece and Germany.
In 2001 Yana was invited to take a part in the ‘International Orchestra Institut
Attergau’, Austria, where she worked with members of the Vienna Philharmonic
under the baton of Valery Gergiev.
Yana recorded the Glazunov and Mozart concertos with the label ‘Music Minus One’
and also has recordings with the WDR, Bulgarian National Radio and national
television.
She has also TV appearances in live shows in Germany performing among others
with Joe Cocker, The Corrs, Westlife.
Yana continued her studies in Germany where she was a student at the Music
Hochschule Cologne in the class of Emilian Piedicuta (Orpheus-Quartett).
She then specialized in chamber music in the class of Prof. Andreas Reiner at the
Folkwang University of Arts, Essen, receiving her diploma with High Distinction.
YANA DUKANOVA
Yana gained her extensive orchestral experience as a member of the
Düsseldorf Symphoniker, Deutsche Kammerakademie-Neuss am Rhein
and Theater Krefeld und Mönchengladbach. Since 2007 she has a
permanent position with the National Orchestra of Belguim. With these
ensembles, Yana has performed in many famous concert halls around the
world.
Her true passion, however, remains chamber music.
YANA DUKANOVA
In 2007 she helped found the Trio Kayana, which then became Trio Kaliya
after the arrival of the current cellist. In their performances, the young
musicians are united by their desire to break the listeners bounderies,
presenting refreshing interpretations of classical repertoire as well as
exciting and often unknown modern pieces. Their work is inspired in equal
parts by the influence of musical personalities from the classical scene
such as Troels Svane, Wolf Harden (Fontenay-Trio) and Dirk Mommertz
(Fauré-Quartett) and by their projects with the producer and turntable artist
DJ Illvibe and the Swiss jazz composer Daniel Schnyder. Their concert
programs reflect this vibrant mix and have been recently publicly acclaimed
in their performances at the Philharmonie Essen and at the International
Festival ‘March Music Days’ in Bulgaria. In 2008 during their chamber
music studies in the class of Prof. Andreas Reiner (Rosamunde-Quartett) at
the Folkwang University of Arts, Essen, the young musicians were awarded
the Köhler-Osbahr-Stiftung Prize. In 2009 they were granted a scholarship
from the Villa Musica in September 2009 which included concerts all over
Germany.
One of the upcoming projects of the trio is the performance of the Triple
concertos by Ludwig van Beethoven and Daniel Schnyder (first
performance in Germany) in March 2012.
Elif Dimli was born in 1987 in Ankara. She began to play the piano at the age of 5
and cello at the age of 8. Her first success was when she was 9 and playing the
cello since only 7 months. She won the 2nd price in “Rotary Young Tallent of the
Year” competition in Ankara. Her first solo concert at the age of 10 was with Bilkent
Youth Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mahir Cakar. In 2000, she won the 1 st
price in “Rotary Young Musician of the Year” in Edirne, in 2002 she won 2nd price in
“4eme Concours des Jeunes Interprets” in France. The young cellist has given many
recitals in Turkey and Europe and played as soloist with many orchestras such as:
Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, Perpignan Chamber Orchestra, Istanbul Symphony
Orchestra. In 2008 she was invited with scholarship to the “Montecito Music
Festival” in Santa Barbara and gave the opening concert of the Festival.. Since 2009
she is a scholarship holder from the association “Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now”
which has the aim to bring classical music to the people who can not go to concerts.
In this context she is playing in places such as hospitals, prisons, rest homes, daily
care centers, orphanage…
Besides classical repertoire, Elif Dimli has been also working on improvisation. In
2009 improvisations on the theme she composed, “Elegie for cello solo and the one”
was performed in Wuppertal and in Essen. In 2010 she gave an improvisation
concert together with famous jazz contrabass player and composer Barry Guy and
violinist Maja Homburger in Essen. This year in April, she performed a live recital at
the national radio, Radio3 of TRT (Turkish Radio and Television) with pianist Kai
Schumacher who is also a member of Trio Kaliya as herself.
Elif Dimli has worked with many famous cellists such as Raphael Wallfisch, Arto
Noras, Alexander Rudin. Since 2005 she is studying in Folkwang University of Arts
in Essen, with Professor Young Chang Cho.
ELIF DIMLI
Kai Schumacher received his first piano lessons at the age of five, his first public
performance was at the age of seven, and his orchestral debut (with Shostakovich's
Second Piano Concerto) took place when he was 15. At first glance, the classic story
of a young prodigy. But the piano was for him in the true sense of the word a
plaything and not some piece of sports equipment; music was a passion and not a
discipline. After receiving his school diploma, Schumacher was accepted at the
Folkwang Hochschule in Essen (Germany) - even though at that point he had
attended more punkrock events than symphony concerts. He was awarded the
Folkwang piano prize and was given a prize by the Köhler-Osbahr Foundation;
Schumacher played his concert examination in 2009, which received the citation
"outstanding". In addition to his studies with Till Engel, he worked with the American
pianist Guy Livingston in Amsterdam, and studied chamber music with Andreas
Reiner.

As a result, Kai Schumacher's repertory places special emphasis on contemporary
American music for the piano. In addition to numerous European premiere
performances, he works closely with composers of the younger generation: for
example in his project "Darling, I'm indeed useless to you - 12 Variations without
Amanda Palmer" (premiere January 2009) for which 12 composers, ranging from
jazz to avantgarde, wrote one variation each based on a theme composed by Kai
Schumacher. In cooperation with the Duisburg Philharmonic, he is developing new
forms for concert presentation, mixing classic and contemporary piano music with
rockmusic and electronic sounds, also using light and video installations to form a
collage that attracts younger audiences and older critics as well. Crossover as a
well- considered experiment, not merely cheap provocation. But Kai Schumacher is
not only active as a proponent of modern music; he also concertizes regularly as a
soloist, as the pianist of the Trio Kaliya, and as a keyboard player with the indie/folk
band Mobilée. Besides Germany, he played concerts in Poland, Bulgaria, Turkey,
United Kingdom, Belgium, The Netherlands, Lithuania and South-Korea.
For his CD debut, Kai Schumacher dared to chose a masterpiece of
contemporary piano music: „The people united will never be defeated“
by Frederic Rzewski, a feature-length set of variations on the Chilean
revolution song „El pueblo unido jamas sera vencido“ - and he received
inspiring reviews:
"A pianistic sensation"
(Fonoforum 01/2010 // CD of the month)
"With this interpretation, the young pianist set himself a monument - one
which shows that the musical ideology from past centuries are still
relevant today - if one understands to represent them as intensely and
direct as Schumacher does. This cd is a must!" (Pianonews, January/
February 2010)
