Formed from three of Australia’s leading young musicians, the Streeton Trio is based in Geneva, Switzerland.
The trio was formed in 2008 and is one of the ensembles in residence of the prestigious European Chamber
Music Academy. The trio has benefited from tutorials with world-renowned musicians Gabor TakacsNágy, Hatto Beyerle, Avedis Kouyoumdjian, Johannes Meissl, Christoph Richter, Peter Cropper, Miguel Da
Silva, Gary Hoffman, Sergey Ostrovsky, Philippe Graffin, Pascal Devoyon and Mihaela Martin.
Named after the Australian Impressionist painter, Sir Arthur Streeton, the trio has received great acclaim for its
recent performances in Australia, Holland, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Norway, and the UK. The
trio has performed in venues such as Wigmore Hall (London), Het Loo Royal Palace (Holland) and the
Melbourne Recital Centre. Following highly commended performances in the Apeldoorn Festival, Holland, the
trio was invited to give repeat performances of piano quartets with renowned violist Ásdís Valdimarsdóttir.
Winner of the 2011 Sydney Eisteddfod Musica Viva Chamber Music Award, the Streeton Trio has been
selected for several prestigious competitions and festivals, including the 2011 Melbourne International Chamber
Music Competition (one of 8 trios selected worldwide) and the 2011 Trondheim International Chamber Music
Competition (one of 9 trios selected worldwide). The trio has also been awarded the 2011 Arts Victoria Touring
Grant, the 2010 Skills and Arts Development grant from the Australia Council for the Arts, and the 2010 Ian
Potter Cultural Trust Grant. The trio's debut CD, released in May 2011, has received rave reviews, and has
been broadcast extensively across Australia on ABC FM, 3MBS FM, 2MBS FM, 4MBS FM, and 774 3LO
radio stations, and in Switzerland on Radio Classic Swiss.
As members of the European Chamber Music Academy, the trio receives intensive monthly masterclasses with
the world's leading chamber musicians and regular performances at festivals across Europe.

Benjamin Kopp, piano
Pianist Benjamin Kopp has performed as soloist with the Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide
and Western Australian Symphony Orchestras, and Orchestra Victoria, and has
collaborated with conductors Vladimir Verbitsky, Brett Kelly, Marco Zuccarini, John
Harding Nicholas Braithwaite and James Judd. Benjamin is currently based in Geneva,
Switzerland and has recently completed his postgraduate studies with Pascal Devoyon
at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Geneve. During his time in Switzerland, Benjamin
has performed as soloist with several orchestras, including Ensemble Contrechamps,
l'Orchestre du HEM Geneve and Ensemble Namascae. In 2007, Benjamin was the
winner of the ABC Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year in the keyboard
category. From 2004-2006 Benjamin was a full-scholarship holder at the Australian National Academy of
Music, with teacher Rita Reichmann. During his time there, Benjamin won the ANAM Concerto Competition.
Benjamin completed his Bachelor of Music at the Sydney Conservatorium, with teacher Daniel Herscovitch,
and previously studied with Jennifer Hammond. He has also performed in recitals with Mats Lindstrom and
Alexander Baillie. Benjamin’s solo and chamber music performances are regularly broadcast on Radio Suisse
Romande, ABC Classic FM, 2MBS FM and 3MBS FM.
Emma Jardine, violin

Australian violinist Emma Jardine has performed concertos and recitals throughout
Australia, Scandanavia, Italy and Switzerland. Emma’s solo performances have been
broadcast live on major Australian radio stations ABC FM and 3MBS FM, and her
recordings have been featured on SBS TV, Channel 10 and Channel 9 Networks, and
she also featured in the Melbourne International Arts Festival.
Emma has recently completed a Masters degree at the Haute Ecole de Musique de
Geneve in the class of Mihaela Martin. In 2010 she was a student at the International
Menuhin Music Academy (Switzerland). Previous teachers include Pierre Amoyal,
Gyulla Stuller, Nelli Scholnikova, Igor Osim, Miwako Abe and Alice Waten. Emma
has been winner of numerous competitions and scholarships, including awards from the Australia Council, Ian
Potter Foundation, IMS Prussia Cove, Siena Accademia Musicale Chigiana, Salzburg Mozarteum and
Victorian College of the Arts.
Emma currently performs with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and in 2010 performed as soloist with the
Camerata Menuhin (Switzerland). She has been engaged as Guest Principal of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra
and has performed with the Melbourne, Sydney and West Australian Symphony Orchestras. From 2004-2005,
Emma Jardine was an Academy Musician at the Australian National Academy of Music and was selected to
represent the Academy as soloist with orchestra in their “Best Concertos of 2004” Concert. Emma also holds a
Bachelor of Music Performance from the Victorian College of the Arts.
Martin Smith, cello
Australian cellist Martin Smith began Cello at the age of 8, studying with Uzi Wiesel in
Sydney and is currently studying with Natalia Gutman in Florence, Italy.
Martin has appeared as orchestral soloist and recitalist throughout Australia, Europe and
North America with recent performances including appearances with the Plymouth
Symphony, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lyon, and a tour of Denmark with the Esbjerg
Ensemble. He has appeared in concert with such artists as Leon Fleisher and Kolja
Blacher and has given broadcasts for BBC3, Danish Radio, Deutsche Rundfunk Koln and
ABC-FM.
Recently, Martin performed recitals in Holland and Germany, including the Concertgebouw [Amsterdam] and
Konzerthaus [Berlin], a tour of Japan and China as soloist with the Orchestre de Chambre de Lyon as part of
the Olympic Arts Festival, a recording for MDR Radio [Leipzig] of works by Giacinto Scelsci, and a tour of
Japan and Indonesia performing chamber music with Midori, as part of the International Community
Engagement Program.

REVIEW: STREETON TRIO — Ravel & Brahms Piano Trios

It is a mark of the seriousness of purpose of this new trio of Australian Musicians that on their début CD they
have tackled two of the most substantial works in the genre, Ravel’s single Piano Trio, and Brahms’ first, in its
tautened 1891 version. The choice of repertoire is interesting—the two works have both a formal and textural
similarity, albeit superficial. The first movement of the Ravel is particularly tricky, with an exquisite main
theme full of rhythmic pitfalls, and the Streetons negotiate these with real poetry, picking an absolutely
convincing tempo, neither leisurely nor urgent but underlining the nostalgic melancholy of the movement.
Again, in the mercurial second movement, Pantoum, the tempo is close to ideal and the playing has great
vivacity. They take the grand Passacaille that comes next at a markedly slow tempo and much to their credit it
is entirely successful, reminding us of the 17th century origins of this distinctive musical form; their performance
has a melancholy solemnity without losing the characteristic Ravel sophistication. The Finale draws all the
preceding threads together, and the Streeton’s reading gives this last movement a fiery, culminatory power.
The Brahms First Trio, by contrast, begins almost amiably, insinuating us into his genial soundworld without
fuss, and the measured way the Streeton Trio build tension in the first movement has a beautifully idiomatic
expansiveness. They manage to sustain a plateau of intensity that gripped me throughout this mellow work. The
second movement alternates delicacy, in the horncall-like first theme, with an exemplary lyricism in the
sweeping Trio section, and while the ensuing slow movement is perhaps less full-blooded than would be ideal, it
is certainly charged with the sense of resignation that makes Brahms’ Adagios so poignant. The concise Finale
is strongly turbulent with an anxious energy that drives the music towards a powerful climax.
The recorded sound, perhaps a little better in the Ravel than the Brahms, has a pleasing naturalness and
intimacy; although a self-issued CD the production values are excellent. It is quite clear that these young players
have entirely identified with this repertoire—their unerring exactitude of tempo and mood is almost psychic. I
look forward to seeing how they develop. But in the meantime, you could support them by buying this excellent
CD…

Nous avons beaucoup apprécié le nouveau cd du Trio Streeton Ravel/Brahms. C'est un beau programme que le Trio Streeton joue

soigné. Mais c'est la musique qui prime et elle est bien là sur celui-ci...
