From traditional granite houses in charming alpine valleys, to Baroque residences in picturesque villages around the lakes, vineyards, waterfalls, palm trees and glaciers, Ticino presents a variety of landscapes. An ideal setting for the most important day of your life. Ticino is well connected by all means of transport. For Swiss citizens living outside Ticino or foreign citizens with Swiss residency. Step 1: Announce to the Civil Register Office The couple needs to announce to the competent authority (civil register office) of their township (if the couple has different townships, they need to choose one out of the two and announce themselves), that they wish to get married. The civil register office will advise them about the procedures and the papers they need to present. After presenting the required papers, the township will issue a written 3 months authorization permit. Within these 3 months, the couple will be able to marry everywhere in Switzerland. Step 2: Contact the Civil Register Office where you get married Depending on where the couple wishes to get married in Ticino, they need to contact one of the eight district civil register offices in Ticino (Ufficio distrettuale dello stato civile). Please find the list in the following page. Step 3: Choose a Wedding Hall The couple needs to present all the requested papers to the district civil register office, then decide in which wedding hall to get married, contact the competent authority (contact information are given by the district civil register office) and set a date in conjunction with the authority. Step 4: Organize the Wedding The organization of the wedding ceremony and the celebration are at the discretion of the spouses. If necessary, they can contact a local wedding planner. For foreign citizens without Swiss residency. Step 1: Announce to the Embassy The couple needs to announce to the closest Swiss Embassy/Consulate their intention of getting married in Switzerland. The Swiss competent authority will inform them about the procedures and the required preliminary papers. Step 2: Contact the District Civil Register Office Afterwards the Swiss Embassy/Consulate invites the couple to contact one of Ticino’s eight district civil register offices. The bride and groom-to-be will need the help of an interpreter if neither of them speak one of the three Swiss national languages (Italian, German or French). Step 3: Choose a Wedding Hall The couple needs to present all the requested papers to the district civil register office, then decide in which wedding hall to get married, contact the competent authority (contact information are given by the district civil register office) and set a date in conjunction with the authority. From small Romanic churches to gracious sanctuaries that since centuries are pilgrimage sites, in Ticino you can find a multitude of sacred buildings that can give the perfect atmosphere to your religious wedding. Choose a small architectural pearl located in one of the magic valleys, a majestic church in the picturesque city centres of Ticino’s beating hearts, or a peaceful sanctuary from which you can touch the sky with your fingers, enjoying a wonderful view on the region’s beauties. Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Bellinzona This church dates back to the end of the 15th century and first mention is made of it in records of 1480. The interior is divided by a huge transverse wall in the tradition of the Franciscan Order, and is decorated with some magnificent frescoes. On the dividing wall, there is a Renaissance fresco of the Crucifixion surrounded by fifteen scenes depicting the life of Christ. Unfortunately, the painter is unknown but it is most probably the work of an artist from Lombardy, dating from the period between 1495 and 1505. 80199 Sacred Mountain Madonna del Sasso. Locarno The Sacred Mountain Madonna del Sasso in Orselina, is one of the most important religious and historical sites in Ticino. Tradition says that Fra’ Bartolomeo, a Franciscan friar of the convent of Locarno, wanted to build a place of worship on the “rock “ of Locarno as a result of an apparition of the Virgin Mary. Today it consists of the Church of the Annunciation at the foot of the mount, the Via Crucis and the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso. The Sacred Mountain is a wealth of art, history and spirituality. 2693 Church Santa Maria degli Angioli. Lugano The church, which was originally part of a Franciscan monastery, is home to Switzerland’s most famous Renaissance fresco. The “Passion and and Crucifixion of Christ”, which covers the whole wall of the nave, is defined by great expressiveness and vividness of the individual scenes. The church is located on Piazza Bernardino Luini, next to the majestic cultural centre LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura, at the end of Via Nassa, the city’s elegant shopping boulevard. 2682 6| Chapel of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Rivera, Monte Tamaro The chapel of Santa Maria degli Angeli is at 1,567 m above sea level near Alpe Foppa, just two steps from the cable car stop. Set on a belvedere, the chapel looks over the whole plain of Magadino, as far as the entrance to the Mesolcina, Lugano and valleys, and as far as the imposing peaks of the Alps. It was designed by the architect Mario Botta at the request of Egidio Cattaneo, and built between 1992 and 1994. The interior has been decorated by Enzo Cucchi and the completed work was consecrated on the 1st of September 1996. 14909 Church of San Nicolao. Giornico The Church of San Nicolao is one of the most impressive and atmospheric of Ticino’s many Romanesque churches. Its external walls are decorated with Lombardic designs, while inside is a fresco-decorated choir placed above a beautiful triple-apsed half-sunken crypt. The church is located in Giornico, a village on the road to the Gotthard Pass, that has lived through many important historic moments, as can be deduced from the scenic layout of the area; the river flowing through the territory splits into two branches forming an island running through the middle of the town. 2862 Church of San Giovanni Battista. Maggia Valley, Mogno The church of San Giovanni Battista is located in the heart of Mogno. Built between 1992 and 1996, it was designed by Mario Botta and rises on the remains of the original 15th century church, destroyed by an avalanche. The contemporary building stands out among the traditional houses of the village because of its cylindrical shape cut in a diagonal and for the decorative use of stone. The force conveyed by the walls of the church are nicely balanced by the lightness of the glass cover. 14910 Church Collegiata dei Santi Pietro e Stefano. Bellinzona This Renaissance church is located in the town centre of Bellinzona, on the picturesque Piazza Collegiata, that impresses the visitor with its genuine beauty. The church is the work of Master Tomaso Rodari of Maroggia, the sculptor who also designed Como Cathedral. The white stone for the facade came from quarries in Castione; the portal is surmounted by the town’s crest and is flanked by two smaller doors in 15th century style. The indoors of the religious building are decorated by beautiful frescoes. 2841 |7 Church of San Gottardo. Intragna The parish church of San Gottardo in Intragna is one of the most famous sights in Ticino with the highest bell tower of the canton (65 meters). Renovated in 1722, the church has conserved its Baroque high altar and an elegant Rococo balustrade with an impressive illusionistic fresco by G. A. Caldelli in the background. 4762 Church of Santa Croce. Riva San Vitale Overlooking Riva San Vitale from its elevated position on the town’s north side, the church of Santa Croce is one of the most important religious buildings in Switzerland. This central‑plan Catholic church with its three chapels was commissioned by the noble Della Croce family and built in the late 16th century. Inside, you can admire fascinating frescoes of biblical scenes such as the Finding of the True Cross, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the Sermon of Saint Bernardino. 2947 Church of Santi Giacomo e Cristoforo. Bosco Gurin According to recent research, this is the first church of the highest village in Ticino. Dedicated to Saint James and Saint Christopher, the church was consecrated in 1253 and built across from the present-day village, which is also the site of the first settlement of Bosco Gurin. According to existing documents, the church was most probably rebuilt on the promontory where it now stands in the late 15th century, following its destruction by an avalanche. 4746 Church of Santa Maria del Sasso. Morcote On the outskirts of this old town first mentioned in the 10th century, climb the monumental 400 step staircase to enjoy the rewarding panoramic terrace of the parish Church of Santa Maria del Sasso. Although this church probably dates back to the 13th century, it was rebuilt in 1462, and its orientation was also later changed in 1758. Its belfry of late Roman style was built in the 16th century. 2692 8| Special venues for ceremonies and banqueting. In Ticino there are many locations to celebrate your wedding reception, and they’re all fit to organize an unforgettable day. The choice goes from fairytale castles (UNESCO World Heritage Sites), to romantic Romanic churches, to beautiful villas, to an island, to a theater, or even to the top of a Swiss mountain with breathtaking view. Following is a list of singular locations already equipped to celebrate the most wonderful day of your life. Castelgrande. Bellinzona, UNESCO World Heritage Site Castelgrande, also called Castello di San Michele, Uri or Castel Vecchio, dominates the old town of Bellinzona. It’s the most ancient of the three castles and rises on pre-existing foundations, that probably belong to the Roman period. Built in the 13th century, the large fortified wall is divided in three sectors: the court, the western exterior wall and the eastern exterior wall. The peripheral part of the castle has some rather low walls, covered with closed battlements and crossed by a large passageway. 42588 Castle of Morcote. Morcote The Castle of Morcote, a little pearl of the pre-Alps, is situated among bright woods with terraces of vineyards, olive trees and typical Mediterranean flora, and lies between two characteristic villages of the region: Morcote and Carona. This property offers its visitors many opportunities from the simple beauty of the countryside to peaceful walks amidst nature, agriculture and typical villages. Refreshment breaks, lunch and dinner are served in the recently renovated Vicania restaurant (capacity for groups up to 100 people), which has maintained the typical Ticinese charm of a farm. 126861 Centro Dannemann. Brissago The Centro Dannemann of Brissago is a modern and versatile event location in a traditional cigar factory on the shores of Lake Maggiore, in the sunny southern part of Switzerland. Impressive rooms with extraordinary lake views, the romantic Grotto at the old port, modern meeting rooms, a multi-media auditorium and two beautiful palm gardens directly on the lake, make it one of the best locations for weddings in Ticino. 77278 |9 Falconry. Locarno The Falconry of Locarno offers the possibility to celebrate your marriage right in the centre of the beautiful park, with a private flight demonstration of their beautiful birds of prey. The park of the Falconry is also an ideal backdrop for original group photos or romantic wedding albums. It is possible to host weddings in the fascinating and natural surroundings of the Falconry (also in case of rain). The covered area, as well as being very practical, is also comfortable and can seat up to 200 people at a high standard, offering comfort, style and tranquillity. 131579 Brissago Islands. 48939 Tenuta Montalbano. San Pietro di Stabio The Botanical garden of the big Brissago Island, offers several spaces and solutions to spend the most beautiful day of your life. Into the enchanting garden, you can celebrate your wedding. You can reserve the exclusive Roman Bath, a magic place to get married, the Eucalyptus garden, on the heart of the unforgettable park, and, last but not least, you can celebrate inside or on the terrace of “Villa Emden”. Other garden spaces are available upon request. 118105 Villa San Quirico. Minusio This magnificent villa is an isolated dwelling house, of medium size, realized in the early ‘30s in sovereign style, and surrounded by a park of over 2,000 m². The competent cantonal Authority has listed Rivapiana’s Villa San Quirico as an officially recognized building for civil wedding ceremonies. 123088 10 | Wedding ceremonies and banquets in hotels. hotels.ticino.ch | Fabulous locations for ceremonies with accommodation.
