Thank you so much and enjoy the sketches!! What is a Scrapbook Layout? A scrapbooking layout (or sketch) is an outline or plan that allows you to map out your design, materials and embellishments for your scrapbook page. Having a plan before you sit down will help you save time and avoid the dreaded scrappers block. You will find this invaluable as you’ll have more time for your family and yourself as you complete your pages faster. You will be more likely now to take a favourite photo and start a scrapbook page as soon as I have a few moments to yourself. You will now have the confidence make a start on a favourite photo and quickly let your creativity blossom. Having pre-prepared layouts removes one of the many hurdles we face in getting our scrapbooking finished. The layouts are still flexible enough however for you personalise and add your own special touch. Check out this sketch below using one of my layouts. You can tell the layout was used as inspiration, but it has been changed a little to suit the photo and personalise the end result. How to use the layouts in your Scrapbooking Spark Kit Each of your 404 layouts has a series of shapes, patterns and embellishments added in sequence. Let’s break down this layout and see how we would sit down and start scrapping when you have that precious moment to yourself! Photo Title First start with your square card stock, 12 x 12, 8 x 8 or 6 x 6. Then add in your first element. In this case, another square in on a left leaning angle. Now, add a vertical strip of paper/material. Then place you photo overlapping a little on the previous strip. Photo Now add the 3 boxes of cascading down to the right and your title overlapping your photo. Photo Title And last but not least put in your circular embellishments to finish your page off. All done! Photo Title Personalizing your Scrapbooking Spark Layouts. You can use the layouts more than once, with a little imagination and tweaking each layout can inspire many new pages. Let’s use the sketch we just created and turn it into something different. Let’s add an element: an extra strip along the bottom. Photo Title Or we can change the some elements completely. Photo Title Or flip it over! Photo As you can see the potential for each layout is huge. Double page layouts You can use all the layouts in your kit for double page layouts also. Here’s some tips to make your sure you have great combinations. Extending borders, embellishments or creative themes from page 1 to page 2 will combine and integrate your pages. Look to mirror your pages. For example if page 1 has a photo bottom left corner look to put a similar photo on page 2 in the top right corner. Choosing your Scrapbooking Spark Layout. You’ll find 404 scrapbooking layouts, to make it easy to find just the right layout for your page I’ve laid them out into 1 photo, 2 photo, 3 photo and 4 photo + categories. You can of course adapt any of these to as many photos as you like and as you gain confidence these categories won’t matter as much to you. A great question to ask yourself as you sit down to scrap: “What are the elements in my photo I would like to accentuate or use as my theme?” Focusing on curves, vertical lines, colours, shapes can really make your photo project. But……remember there is no wrong layout choice. I always thought I was alone in this problem, but after talking to my fellow scrapbook sisters, they have all expressed the same problem at one time or another. I finally came up with some other ideas to help me with my crafting time management…my inspiration followed. I was never one to sit down and plan out my week, let alone my day…but it struck me one day as I walked past my scrapbook table and realized I still had a “page in process” that was 4 months old (true story) that I should start making more time for crafting. I am now a firm believer in planning (as best you can) your day if not your whole week. I actually take out my personal planner on Sunday morning and look at what is coming up for the week. I will now schedule 30-60 minute increments to sit uninterrupted and work on pages or cards for an upcoming craft show etc. As I just mentioned…my second tip to finding time (and inspiration) is working in short spurts. I think I have developed a type of scrapbook ADD, I find the longer I sit at my table with all my stuff pulled out, I start thinking about having to put it away or I am faced with too many choices. I think my attention span is 45 minutes right now. I find that if I set a timer and stick to it, my pages are actually getting done. Instead of a page sitting on my desk for 2 weeks, it might be getting done in 2 days and I believe it is due to working in short increments throughout the day/afternoon or night. Another timesaver, and believe it or not, inspiration aid, is www.pagemaps.com. I love the site because it is a great springboard for inspiration. I think of the site as a roadmap to getting my scrapbooks done. PageMaps website is great for beginners and advanced scrapbook divas alike, beginners get the help they need to create a page and advanced scrapbookers can change the layout to their liking. Looking back when I began creating pages, I looked at every magazine I could get my hands on…and not just paper crafting magazines, I looked at everything…home decorating, food, fashion. Inspiration is all around us…it is just taking the time to recognize it. I find color schemes in fashion magazines that I use on cards or an ad layout on a scrapbook page. Next time you pick up a magazine, tag a few pages that catch your eye and create a page that inspires you. Footnote: I am not affiliated with PageMaps on any level…I just love the website.
