2014 - Kitsap Humane Society
2014 Annual Report A Record-Breaking Year for From our Executive Director Dear Friends, If you were to spend just a little time around our shelter, you would begin to “get it” about how deeply our staff and volunteers care about every single pet that comes through our doors. The feeling is palpable. For many of the animals that come here, the transition from being homeless to finding a loving home may happen within just a few days. But many of our pets require a lot of extra effort, skill and patience. Some require intensive medical treatment, which can include surgery and recovery. Some require weeks of special handling, behavior training and individual socialization. Some need to be sent out to skilled foster homes for a greater level of individual attention. If we see a path to adoption, our team puts together a “treatment plan” and we then do everything within our means to help that pet succeed. A particular moving moment at our shelter is when a pet that’s been with us for a couple of months finally finds the right adoptive home. It is not unusual for staff at the front desk to get on the PA system and announce that “Tonker” or “Clara” is finally going home. At that moment, everyone around the shelter pauses, smiles and cheers for that hard-earned success. Last year we had close to a 95 percent success rate when it came to saving the lives of the pets that came through our doors. And more volunteers and donors supported Kitsap Humane Society than ever before. These too are things we cheer about. Thank you for accompanying us on this incredible journey of love and life-saving care. Sincerely, Eric Stevens Executive Director Pictured here with his dog, Mork, a KHS rescue. 2014 – 2015 Board of Directors (As of April 1, 2015) J. All were cared for with compassion and respect for their individuality. To us, each animal has its own unique story – from the very young kitten that fits in the palm of a hand to the older dog whose long-time owner can no longer care for him. Some of the pets we sheltered were strays that had been lost or abandoned, while others were surrendered by families unable to keep them. Many were rescued from overcrowded shelters where they were at risk of being euthanized. All of us at Kitsap Humane Society share a common vision – that every adoptable companion animal deserves a home. And we’re willing to do whatever it takes for that to happen. Our Veterinary Services staff provides life-saving medical treatment and surgery for pets that arrive at our doors in desperate need. Our Behavior and Training Department coordinates enrichment, socialization and training for dogs by partnering with staff, volunteers and adopters. It’s not unusual to find a particularly shy or anxious animal unwinding with staff in our administrative offices. In 2014, those efforts paid off. A total of 5,192 animals were rehomed (including 4,515 adoptions) – a new record for the 106-year-old Kitsap Humane Society. We also continued efforts to reduce the number of unwanted animals in the county by performing more spay/neuter surgeries (4,684) than ever before. Additionally, the quality of care shelter animals receive went up another notch as we expanded our foster care and volunteer programs. These are results to be proud of, for sure, but we’re not about to rest on our laurels. Thanks to the support of donors like you, we’re well on our way to saving even more animals in 2015. Maggie’s Story Success!!! Maggie exemplifies KHS’ dedication to giving every animal a second chance at life. Surrendered to us in June when her former family felt they couldn’t manage her and their other pets, Maggie had never before been in a kennel environment. Scared and nervous, she hid in the back of her kennel and avoided interacting with staff and visitors. Behind that stressed exterior, Maggie was a loving family dog who just needed to be understood. Maggie began working with the Behavior and Training Department staff and dedicated volunteers, and overcame her fear and stress inside the loud kennel environment. Maggie also got special enrichment on outings away from the shelter and learned important life skills like recall when offleash, and how to relax when left alone. After months of behavioral support, heavy promotion and lots of love from staff and volunteers, lucky Maggie found her new home. Maggie now lives in Poulsbo, where she is showered with toys and adorable sweaters. Thanks to for generously donating the design and printing of this report. 2 Kitsap Humane Society 2014 Annual Report Rescue KHS’ New Rescue Me Program Saving the lives of 1,221 animals Kitsap Humane Society is in the business of saving lives, and through our new Rescue Me Program, hundreds of animals at risk of euthanasia at shelters across the region are being transported to KHS for adoption. When KHS began transferring in at-risk dogs in 2013, support from the community was overwhelming. In 2014 we expanded our reach, saving even more lives through the Rescue Me Program. What started as a partnership with a handful of shelters has blossomed into a life-saving network of more than a dozen shelters across Washington state and a number in Southern California. We had to increase the role of our Transfer Coordinator to accommodate weekly (and more frequent) transports and build relationships with our partner shelters. Dedicated KHS volunteers help transport at-risk animals to our shelter through all types of weather and at all hours of the day – even overnight. Through a generous gift, KHS purchased a new, larger, more efficient transport van that holds up to 30 animals. The Rescue Me Program saved 1,221 dogs, puppies, cats and kittens from partner shelters in 2014. Some of the shelters we partner with have no veterinarian on staff, or only a handful of kennels. As a result many of the animals that came to us from these shelters were in danger of being euthanized. Now these animals are in loving homes across the Puget Sound region. Lucille’s Story In the Nick of Time When Kitsap Humane Society was contacted by a small, underresourced shelter in the south Sound region about a Shepherd-mix puppy in urgent need of rescue, we had to help. The shelter had no veterinarian on staff but knew that KHS had a phenomenal Veterinary Services department and that we loved to help needy cases whenever possible. On the day that 9-month-old Lucille was scheduled to be euthanized due to constant and severe seizures, a KHS volunteer rushed to the shelter and transported her back to KHS. We rescued her just in time. Our Veterinary Services team quickly got her epilepsy under control with medication, but as the seizures subsided it became clear that a puppyhood of neglect had left Lucille with few manners and skills a puppy her age should have. Behavior and Training Department staff and volunteers worked with Lucille to adjust to her seizure-free life, and just a few short weeks later, she was adopted! Now named Kyna, she is loving life with her new owner and doggie siblings. 3 Kitsap Humane Society 2014 Annual Report Animal Control Keeping Animals and Communities Safe Kitsap Humane Society’s Animal Control Officers investigated 2,201 animal-related complaints in 2014, close to 350 of which were cruelty complaints. In addition to recovering strays and abandoned animals, Animal Control Officers investigate cruelty, aggressive animal and nuisance reports throughout all Kitsap County municipalities. KHS’s Officers are also on call to assist local law enforcement agencies. From livestock to injured companion animals, and everything in between, Animal Control Officers face challenging cases every day. Once back at the shelter, Animal Control Officers work with shelter staff to triage cases, locate owners whenever possible, and bring forward more serious cases for prosecution. Chelsea’s Story Revival When Animal Control Officers received a call through 911 for a sick and injured cat one morning in April, they weren’t sure what they would find when they arrived on scene on a country road in Seabeck. Emaciated, dehydrated and lethargic, the orange female cat was stable but in need of immediate medical attention. The Animal Control Officer rushed her back to the shelter for care and the Veterinary Services department got to work. Named Chelsea by shelter staff, this sad cat was hooked up to IV fluids and started on a feeding schedule to bring her safely up to weight. Chelsea thrived with the love and care she received from shelter staff and volunteers, and within two short weeks she was healthy, happy and adopted! 4 Kitsap Humane Society 2014 Annual Report Rehabilitate Rehabilitation Enhances Adoptability Kitsap Humane Society staff, volunteers and community partners work together every single day to provide above and beyond care and rehabilitation for shelter pets in need – helping to increase the likelihood of adoption. Veterinary Care Thousands of shelter pets a year receive basic veterinary treatment, including vaccinations, microchips and spay/ neuter surgery when they arrive at KHS. KHS’ Veterinary Services also provides advanced and specialty care for sick and injured pets. Through partnerships with local veterinary clinics, KHS is able to rehabilitate and save pets that would otherwise have faced euthanasia or perished due to a lack of diagnostics and treatment. Behavior and Training Kitsap Humane Society’s Behavior and Training Department works closely with the Adoption, Volunteer and Foster Care departments to provide behavior support for shelter pets in need. Our goal is to decrease an animal’s stress in the shelter and get them into a loving home quickly. When pets arrive with challenging behavior, or become stressed in the shelter environment, staff and volunteers perform assessments and offer enrichment and socialization. Once pets are adopted, we offer follow-up behavior and training support to help new adopters with any issues that may arise. Foster Care KHS’s Foster Care Program provides home environments for animals too young, sick or stressed to be in a kennel environment. In 2014, over 80 foster parents provided temporary homes for over 800 animals – over 200 more animals than the year before. Aria’s Story Foster Care & Vet Services Tandem on Recovery Aria came to KHS as an orphaned stray and went directly into a foster home when she was 1 week old. When Aria’s foster parent noticed she had trouble swallowing food, our Vet Services team discovered, after many checkups and modifications to her diet, that Aria had a condition that restricted her esophagus and made it impossible for her to swallow food properly. Our veterinarians were willing to try a risky corrective surgery, but since Aria had so much trouble eating, she was very small for her age and not yet strong enough for surgery. Her foster parent bottle fed her around the clock until she was 10 weeks old to get her healthy enough to undergo the procedure. The surgery was a success and after a few weeks of recovery in her foster home, Aria was adopted! 5 Kitsap Humane Society 2014 Annual Report Rehome Adoptions Soar 4,515 animals adopted - up 1,018 In 2014, Kitsap Humane Society found homes for 5,192 animals – 991 more than the previous year! Some were reclaimed by owners, but most – 4,515 animals in total – were adopted. That’s a whopping 1,018 more adoptions than in 2013! KHS is proud of its proactive, progressive adoption program. We practice aggressive adoption outreach, holding adoption events every weekend, either at the shelter or with our off-site adoption partners all over the Puget Sound region. In 2014, we expanded the number of locations where we house and adopt out kittens and cats during our busiest summer months. Our adoptable pets are also promoted online through a variety of channels to give them as much exposure to potential adopters as possible. Staff and trained volunteers counsel adopters oneon-one to help them find the best match possible, and we provide adoption follow-up to make sure the new pet is adjusting well. As a result of our efforts, KHS has one of the lowest euthanasia rates among large shelters in the country – less than 5 percent. Babe’s Story Happy Ending Little Babe the Chihuahua was brought to the shelter as a stray in April wearing a collar with tags and a tiny sweater. Unfortunately all of his tags were a dead end. A small, scared dog, he had a difficult time trusting staff and volunteers and could barely be handled for the first few days. Luckily, Babe was able to move out of the kennels and into offices so that he could be socialized and shown the world wasn’t such a scary place. Babe discovered that he loved to play fetch and would spend hours throwing his own toy and then chasing after it. After making much progress in the office setting, Babe went into short-term foster care to learn all about living in a home. In July, he was finally adopted and quickly became a beloved family member in his new home in Gig Harbor! 6 Kitsap Humane Society 2014 Annual Report Community Services Preventing Homeless Pets Licensing Kitsap Humane Society is now the pet licensing agent for Bremerton, the City of Poulsbo and Unincorporated Kitsap County. In addition to cat and dog licenses, KHS even issues chicken licenses for the city of Bremerton. Licenses get lost pets home faster, and licensing fees support our life-saving work. Microchip and Vaccination Clinics Kitsap Humane Society holds low-cost microchip and vaccination clinics for Kitsap County low-income pet owners every month. Hundreds of pets and their owners benefited from this service in 2014. Spay-Neuter Programs In 2014, Kitsap Humane Society intensified efforts to reduce the number of unwanted and homeless animals in the county. On the front line of that endeavor, our Veterinary Services Department performed 4,684 spay/ neuter surgeries – 277 more than the previous year! In addition to ensuring all cats and dogs are spayed or neutered before adoption, KHS provides a low-cost spay/neuter program for about 2,000 low-income pet owners. Through our Litter Abatement Program, we provide free spay surgery for any female dog or cat whose offspring is surrendered to the shelter’s adoption program. KHS supports Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) efforts in Kitsap County by offering free - and low-cost spay/neuter surgery for outdoor and feral “community cats.” 7 Kitsap Humane Society 2014 Annual Report KHS By The Numbers 2014: 4,515 (up 1,018) 2014: 1,221 (up 675) 2013: 3,497 2013: 546 2014: 815 (up 212) 2014: 5,192 (up 991) 2013: 603 2013: 4,201 2014: 4,684 (up 277) 2014: 565 volunteers worked 33,815 hours (up 6,434 hours) 2013: 4,407 2013: 468 volunteers worked 27,381 hours 8 Kitsap Humane Society 2014 Annual Report Financial Statement 2014 Operating Support and Revenues Bequests and Planned Giving Public Support (Donations) Government Contracts (Animal Control) Earned Revenues and Fees Other income Total Operating Support & Revenue $90,191 669,901 726,551 850,404 2,180 4% 29% 31% 36% 0% $2,339,227 100% Income Bequests and Planning Gifts Donations and Grants Government Contract Revenue Earned Revenues and Fess Other Income 2014 Operating Expenses Animal Control Contract Expenses* Shelter Expenses Veterinary Services Expenses Total Program Expenses Administration Development Total Operating Expenses $778,301 767,299 407,820 33% 33% 17% $1,953,420 83% $222,346 185,986 9% 8% $2,361,752 100% Net Operating Income $(22,525) 2014 Restricted (Non-Operating) Gifts $320,490 Expenses Animal Control Shelter Veterinary Services Administration Development *Animal Control Contract Expenses include a portion of Shelter and Veterinary expenses associated with care for stray and impounded animals. Fiesta’s Story It Took a Village When Fiesta arrived at KHS in July, we knew we had to do what we could to save her. Only a few months old, Fiesta was a sweet black lab-chow mix puppy who had been hit by a car and suffered a very severe injury to her front left leg. Unable to walk and in pain, Fiesta still managed to give a tail wag and kisses to our medical staff. Fiesta’s leg was completely degloved in the accident, and required intensive daily care, including frequent bandage changes, as well as corrective surgery and physical therapy. As a shelter with a tight budget, this level of medical care puts a strain on our already limited resources. We put the word out about Fiesta’s situation, and she was even featured in the Central Kitsap Reporter. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the needed funds were raised in record time so that we could provide Fiesta with the care she needed. Fiesta went through weeks of treatment and was fully rehabilitated. As soon as she became available, lucky Fiesta was adopted by a loving family on Bainbridge Island. 9 Kitsap Humane Society 2014 Annual Report Gifts of Compassion Every donation helps us save more animals’ lives. In an effort to improve the adoption experience for cats AND adopters, KHS decided to build its first ever cage-free, free-roam room, where cats could live stressfree, happy and healthy until they find their new home! We launched our first ever online crowd funding campaign in July to make our dream a reality. Over 60 donors helped us raise the needed funds in less than three weeks. Volunteers from the Teen Center of the Boys and Girls Club of South Puget Sound helped us strip and clean a former office space, and a talented, dedicated volunteer helped transform the room into an amazing Kitty Lounge. The Kitty Lounge has its own ventilation system, is able to be fully disinfected, and has climbing shelves, a cat tree and other furniture for the cats and visitors to enjoy.
