About Leadership Jacksonville
Mission Statement
Leadership Jacksonville develops youth and adult leaders to assume
greater responsibility as community trustees who improve the
quality of life for self, family and community.
What is Leadership Jacksonville, Inc.?
Leadership Jacksonville was established in 1976 as a vehicle to
stimulate the growth of leadership in our community. Currently
Leadership Jacksonville has four major programs:
Leadership Jacksonville Program
Leadership Jacksonville (LJ) is a year-long program that explores the dynamics of an urban
society, analyzes major areas of community concern, facilitates the development of leadership
capacities and promotes a network of community trustees. The program is developed and
created by teams of Leadership Jacksonville alumni and staff.
The LJ program actively solicits applications for this program from all sectors of the
community. Selection for each year’s class is highly competitive. Criteria for selection include
demonstrated or emerging leadership skills, active involvement in the community and a
willingness to invest the time and energy required by the program.
New Leadership Summit
The New Leadership Summit is a unique program targeted for CEOs and senior level
executives who are new or relatively new to the community. During this two-day orientation
program, participants hear from and interact with key leaders of the community to learn
about the assets, issues, institutions, and leadership of the region. Group size is limited to 20
to allow for meaningful interaction.
Youth Leadership Jacksonville Program
Youth Leadership Jacksonville (YLJ) is a program for youth that was founded in 1989. This
year-long program is designed to identify a diverse group of high school juniors from the
First Coast who have demonstrated leadership ability, and prepare them to become ethical
leaders committed to active community involvement. The approximately 56 participants
represent 32 schools in four counties - Duval, Clay, Baker and St. Johns.
Collegiate Leadership Experience
June 2005 marked the beginning of an in-depth community trusteeship program for
college leaders who live in or attend colleges in Northeast Florida. The program, Collegiate
Leadership Experience (CLE), includes an Opening and Closing Retreat and three additional
day-long programs. This is a truly collaborative program receiving generous support from the
University of North Florida, Florida State College at Jacksonville, Jacksonville University, and
Edward Waters College.

TATIANA SALVADOR
Adult Program Chair
BARBARA MOULDING

The Leadership Jacksonville program consists of
two weekend retreats, one in August and one in
May, and nine day-long programs. The Opening
Retreat provides structured exercises that explore
the dynamics of the urban society, leadership
styles, and decision-making through group process.
The program days provide information about the
community, analyze critical program areas and
issues, and provide opportunities for networking
and leadership development. The Closing Retreat
brings it all together with focus on developing a
vision and a personal trusteeship commitment.
Under the leadership of Tatiana Salvador, Adult
Program Chair, the overall program is guided by the
Leadership Development Team. The Leadership
Development Team is a group of LJ alumni with
experience in adult development and/or group
facilitation. Components of the program days are
planned by groups of LJ alumni. Barbara Moulding,
the LJ Program Coordinator, participates in the
planning and provides the staff support for the yearlong program.

•
GOALS FOR PARTICIPANTS
•
•
•
•
•
MEG FOLDS
Youth Programs Director
•
•
To meet students from all areas of the First
Coast Community and to develop mutual
trust and respect for each other.
To have an increased awareness of our
community needs, opportunities, problems
and resources.
To gain a greater understanding of
contemporary issues through interaction and
problem solving with peers, adult leaders, and
decision makers from all segments of
the community.
To develop effective styles of leadership,
communication and decision making skills.
To become a responsible, ethical leader
committed to active community involvement.
SELECTION OF PARTICIPANTS:
Youth Leadership Jacksonville consists of high
school students who excel in student government,
academics, athletics, the arts and community
youth organizations. The participants represent
a cross section of the community in many ways,
including gender, race, culture and neighborhoods.
YOUTH PROGRAMS COMMITTEE 2012-2013
•
•
•
•
Attend a participating high school in Baker,
Clay, Duval, or St. Johns counties accredited
by SACS (Southern Association of Colleges
and Schools).
Be a current sophomore to apply for the
program that takes place in your junior year.
Be approved by the high school principal.
Demonstrate proven leadership in school
and/or community activities.
Have an interest in addressing the issues
confronting your community.
Commit to 100% attendance.
Be academically sound. An average of “B”
or better is recommended. The program will
require students to miss seven days of class
during the academic year.
Approximately 56 participants are selected each
year from the 32 participating schools in the fourcounty region – Baker, Clay, Duval and St. Johns.
Program Days deal with specific facets of the
community such as government, criminal justice,
human services, diversity and business. Each day
combines a behind-the-scenes experience with
a great deal of interaction with the appropriate
community leaders. Students learn methods
and skills to address the issues as they unfold,
becoming ethical trustees committed to active
community involvement.
