Hannover just for you
Shall we meet under the tail? And later go on to the “Glocke” (the
“Bell”), where we can have a good time? - People visiting Hannover may
be puzzled by some of the odd expressions used here. But don’t worry:
it’s all quite harmless. When people say “under the tail”, they mean by
the statue of King Ernest Augustus on his horse right outside the Central Station, which is one of Hannover’s most popular meeting points.
And if they say they’re going to the “Glocke”, they mean the Café Glocksee in the Linden district of the city. Close by in the same district you will
also find lively Limmerstrasse, a marvellous street to stroll down if you
want to see and be seen. Relaxed, tolerant, never getting worked up
about things: these are perhaps the best terms to describe what life is
like in this city, and how it feels to live here. It’s an attractive place,
where life is well worth living.
The City of Hannover embraces 51 districts – and every one of them has
a “scene” with a charm of its own and its own particular highlights and
plus points. Every visitor would therefore be well advised to go and
discover List, Linden, Nordstadt and the other districts.

Right in the middle of things!
If you want to go shopping in Hannover, you can start as soon as
you come out of the Central Station onto Ernst August Platz. On
the right is the Ernst August Galerie; down the steps, one floor
below ground level, is the Niki de Saint Phalle Promenade with
Bahnhofstrasse above it - all inviting places for the shopper, the
stroller and the gourmet. And if you go on straight ahead, you
will come to Kröpcke.
A little tip: if you want to meet someone here at the heart of
Hannover, arrange to do so at the Kröpcke Clock; then you will
be sure not to miss them, however full the square may be. The
most important shopping streets meet here, you can stroll down
Georgstrasse to Steintor. Time for a coffee break? In the little
streets of the Old Town you will find not only some delightful
boutiques, but also lots of cafés and cosy pubs.
Under the tail
What would Ernest Augustus, King
of Hannover, have said if he had
been able to foresee this? It is not
the image of his royal personage
but his horse that provides a popular meeting point in Hannover
today. If someone says “under the
tail”, they are proposing to meet at
the equestrian statue directly
outside the Central Station.
Market Hall
The Market Hall, known as the
“Belly of Hannover”, is popular
above all for its vast diversity of
fresh food and exclusive interna­
tional delicacies; but it is also a
place that takes such a hold on
its visitors that they spend long­er
there than they had meant to,
enjoying a coffee or a prosecco.
A place to see and be seen.
Old Town Flea Market
“Pre-owned” objects, junk, art
and kitsch! Every Saturday, the
bargain-hunters and golddiggers descend on Germany’s
oldest flea market, located on
the “Hohen Ufer”, the High Bank
of the River Leine between
Schlossstrasse and Goethestrasse.
A traditional atmosphere is cultivated; you will look in vain for
mass produced goods.

No, it’s not a district of Hannover ...
… on the contrary, Hannover is an appendage of Linden, everybody in Linden knows that. To the right and left of Limmerstrasse
and around the Market Place there is an abundance of teeming,
colourful life. Students, university lecturers, eccentrics, people
for whom life is an art form, they all practically live on the
streets. This is a district to go out and to party in! Pubs, cafés,
kiosks and restaurants are to be found on every corner; the
extent of the party triangle is marked by the venues Béi Chéz
Heinz, Café Glocksee and the Faust Culture Centre.
And Linden is a real insider’s tip for shoppers: there are lots of
little boutiques and shops offering trendy styles and accessories
such as are only to be found in such a laid-back “scene” area.

Lindener Marktplatz
This is the place to meet on
Sat­urdays: no-one in Linden
would think of giving the weekly
market a miss. All around the
Night Watchman Fountain you
will find strollers deep in philosophical conversation – which is
not to be wondered at, since the
philo­sopher Hannah Arendt was
born at No. 2 Lindener Marktplatz.

Apollo Cinema
This was one of Germany’s first
art cinemas. Even today, the
“Studio for Kinematic Art” at No.
50 Limmerstrasse can boast a
loyal following for its thrilling
mix of recent, classic and quality
films. In addition, Hannover
entertainer Desimo regularly
presents live programmes of
great acts by artistes.

Lindener Berg
Linden’s “mountain” may rise a
mere 35 metres above the “Linden baseline”; but as everybody
knows, size is not everything, and
it’s well worth climbing up to the
top. There you can relax in the
beer garden, stroll through the
old cemetery or the allotments,
and enjoy a breathtaking view
from the Observatory or a concert
in the legendary Jazz Club.

Heesestr. 1, open daily from
5 p.m., food until 11 p.m. The Big
Bad Wolf is noisy and full of
cigarette smoke and rock music,
and it’s a very special place. The
motto is “live and let live”. A
billiard table, Hannover 96 play­
ing football on TV, plenty of
Linden eccentrics and possibly
the best Thai cuisine in Hannover.

Kulturzentrum Faust (Faust Culture Centre)
Zur Bettfedernfabrik 3, opening times depending on the programme,
generally open-ended. Live concerts, parties, readings, exhibitions
and much more besides take place at various locations on a single site.
The “Faust” offers thrills of a different kind every day. In summer the
“Gretchen” beer garden is a great attraction; the pizza is sensational.

Café Glocksee
Glockseestr. 35, opening times

all played here at some time or
other! Live music, still more live
music, with “in” DJ sets and gin
and tonic until the small hours.
If you arrive late, you just stay
longer. The Glocksee is known
throughout Hannover as a cult
venue.

legendary dive in the basement
under the swimming baths is a
must in Linden’s nightlife. Wild
parties, live music with many
thrilling bands and moderate

One of Linden’s oldest restaurants,
formerly called “Zum Holländer”,
nowadays simply “Centre”, which
says it all. This is where people
from the scene meet and stay all
night. Thursday is always the
Centrum’s “day on”. What’s that?

The district for individualists
The 16,000 or more inhabitants
of the Nordstadt, the area of
Hannover to the north of the city
centre, are a colourful mixture of
students, young families, old
inhabitants who have become
local institutions, former house
occupiers, migrants and numerous eccentrics. Life in the area of
the city with Hannover’s Leibniz
University right next door is
relaxed, tolerant and peaceful.
Here, the punk will carry the old
granny’s shopping home for her,
while people meet in the cafés on
Engelbosteler Damm or around
the Luther Church to chat about
world peace, or simply on a meadow in the Guelph Garden for a
picnic. In the evening you can go
to an award-winning cinema or
to one of the many “in” pubs.
Even a shopping expedition can
turn out to be a thrilling activity
in the Nordstadt, since the shops
are as individual as the people:
cool, trendy, off-beat, simply
different.

Yes, it’s a church. But no, it’s not

workshops – this church may
look old, but it is young at heart.

The Nordstadt is renowned for its density of pubs. People of every taste
will find a place that suits them in the warren of side-streets; students,
night owls and the people from next door quickly get into conversation
with each other. And then they go on to the nearest music venue just
round the corner. Even in the Luther Church, there are concerts all the
time.

youth centre, one of the oldest in

Charming and family-friendly
Lister Meile and Podbielskistrasse are the two main arteries of
the List district. Many families value highly the quieter, more
middle-class atmosphere and the numerous shopping opportunities to be found both on the main streets and in the side
streets. People meet for a glass of good wine, go to the theatre
(Theater in der List e.V.), or attend a reading or a concert in the
Pavillon. Shopping is the main topic in the List, whether on Lister
Meile or around Wedekindplatz; everywhere you go you will see
people with shopping bags full to bursting. And because shopping can be very tiring, people in this part of the city have to
keep themselves fit; many going jogging in the Eilenriede in the
early morning.
Eilenriede

Europe‘s biggest urban forest is
to be found at the heart of Hannover. On Sundays, half the city
goes looking for recreation in this
green oasis. Whether it’s jogging,
in-line skating or simply walking,
there is plenty of room in the
1,600 acres of the Eilenriede. And
if you’re lucky, you may see deer,
foxes or bats.

Lister Meile
This is one of the most popular
boulevards, with lots of shops
and cafés. You can relax and
enjoy yourself in one of the ice
cream parlours or in an Italian
bistro, surrounded by the
district’s wonderful art nouveau
façades. The Lister Meile Fest
and the Christmas Market are
particular annual highlights.
Jugendstil (art nouveau)
The charming, well-preserved
façades of the older buildings, for
example around Wedekindplatz,

… those are the things that make the Südstadt, the area of Hannover to
the south of the city centre, such a great place to live. The Eilenriede
city forest and the Maschsee Lake are wonderful recreational areas, yet
it only takes five minutes to reach the city centre via Marienstrasse or
Hildesheimer Strasse. It is rumoured that single people in particular
prefer this part of the city, perhaps because jogging round the Maschsee Lake provides such marvellous opportunities for flirting…
More and more students have settled in the Südstadt in recent times,
even though it is a comparatively quiet part of the city. And what else is
there to say about it? The Eisfabrik (“Ice Factory”) offers drama, art and
culture, and Hannover’s biggest weekly market takes place on Stephansplatz every Friday.

The Kunstverein (Arts Association) presents the latest developments in contemporary art in

The buses and trams of the Hannover transport undertaking üstra will
get you from A to B quickly and in an environmentally friendly manner.
If you simply want to get from one part of Hannover to another as
easily as possible, the üstra services will enable you to do so reliably at
intervals of just a few minutes.

This is the best way of getting
around the town by car easily,
simply and economically. Register via the internet, and then
simply go to the nearest Quicar
shop with your driving licence
and identity document, book the
type of car you need, and you’re
off. There are already more than
50 stations in Hannover, with 250
vehicles available.
Tricycle taxi
If you want to go sightseeing in a
particularly relaxed manner, the
best way is by tricycle taxi. In the
summer you will find them standing outside the train station,
waiting to pick you up – and the
driver will be thoroughly well
informed about all the highlights
to the left and to the right of your
route.
Segway
Go on a thoroughly relaxed tour
of discovery through the city at
speeds of up to 20 kph: you can,
for example, explore the “Red
Thread” or the Old Town with a
Steward of the Marksmen’s Fair
acting as a guide, who will tell
you some absorbing tales about
Hannover. Operating a Segway is
child’s play.
Bicycle hire
Don‘t worry: Hannover has hardly
any hills, so it’s certainly a great
idea to explore the city by bike.

The Deister Hills
Go cycling or rambling; relax and
discover new things. Only about
30 km to the south-west of
Hannover there is a green paradise waiting to be discovered: the
Deister Hills. Old manor houses,
country estates, village churches,

everywhere!
Blauer See
Clear, clean water and a wonderful sandy beach, a water ski
cableway and a 65-metre-long
giant slide – the Blauer See
(“Blue Lake”) in Garbsen is the

sports enthusiasts in the summer. The beginners’ and advanced wakeboard courses are absolute hits!
Lake Steinhude, kitesurfing
This is north-western Germany’s biggest lake, with the island
fortress of Wilhelmstein and Steinhude bathing island, as well
as a marvellous sandy beach. And it is, of course, the leading
address for water sport in Hannover Region. Swimming, sailing,
surfing, rowing, canoeing, pedalo boating and above all kiteboarding. Over the last few years Lake Steinhude has developed
into a centre for all kitesurfing fans. And if you feel you need a
break, you can slope off to the Insect Museum or the Lake Steinhude Nature Park Centre, or enjoy the abundance of delicious
things to eat all around the lake.
