Governor Scott Announces Rule Changes to
Bring More Business to Florida Ports
On Thursday, February 14th, the
governor’s office announced a
series of administrative rule
changes by the Florida Department of Transportation in the
hopes of bringing more trade
through Florida ports.
Scott stated in a release: “By
streamlining operations we’ll
better position Florida to capitalize on the increased trade opportunities that the expansion of the
Panama Canal will bring to our
communities.”

Streamlining the permitting
process for applicants.

Providing the same level of
service to both trip and blanket permit applicants by
eliminating the requirement
for trip permit applicants to
submit a height survey letter
prior to obtaining a permit
for vehicles up to 18 feet in
height

Increasing the number of
days for which a trip permit
is valid, from five days to
seven days.
The changes would increase the
amount permitted in a sealed
truck container, putting the load
at the same weight allowed in
neighboring states, according to
the governor’s office.

FDOT Secretary Ananth Prasad
stated the rules would improve
the flow of freight and make
Florida more competitive.
Increasing the maximum
gross vehicle weight allowed for sealed containerized cargo units from 95,000
pounds to 100,000 pounds.

Reducing the number and/or
type of escorts required
when traveling on a limited
access facility.
The administrative rule changes

Self Confidence and Your Job
Starting a new job in a totally
new industry can be daunting.
A lack of self confidence usu-
ally stems from a lack of
experience or knowledge.
Learning more about your
job can boost your self confidence and put you back in
the driver’s seat.
Confidence is a vital aspect
of our day-to-day lives and
is especially important in the
workplace.
Unfortunately, not everyone
was born with "built-in" self
confidence. In fact, many of
us had to work hard to
According to the governor’s office, the changes will not compromise public safety, we’re
supported by Florida Trucking
Association.
The rule changes come as Florida’s congressional delegation
met in Washington, D.C. with
officials from the state’s 15 seaports. The idea of the caucus
meeting was to show politically
unified support for improving
Florida’s 15 seaports, which
support an estimated 550,000
jobs and produce $66 billion in
annual economic activity.
“With the state of Florida leadership already committed to creating jobs and improving freight
movement, the Florida Ports
Council also continues to also
advocate with the same focus on
Capitol Hill,” stated Florida Ports
Council President, Doug
Wheeler.
achieve some semblance of
confidence. People with low
confidence and self-esteem
often feel unappreciated and
find it hard to succeed.
When starting a new job
know your strengths and
weaknesses. You obviously
had the qualifications to get
the job, now you have to
learn not only the job requirements, but possibly a
new industry as well.

Once you have a full understanding of your job, your fear and
hesitation will decrease and you can and will start asserting yourself more.
Here are some tips for becoming more self confident in the workplace:
Prepare for your work and work environment by analyzing the
skills necessary to do your job and to be effective in your place of
business. Identify the skill sets and competencies you’ll need to
get your job done and deal with customers, bosses and co-workers.
Find and ask for training or direction for any skill sets you may
not possess, and commit to developing yourself in any area that
will make your job more manageable.
Identify your strengths when it comes to doing your job and relating
to people within the work environment. List those qualities you
possess that you can apply to your job. Recognize those areas where
you are a superior performer, and how your skills can offer value to
your work environment. Knowing how your character and abilities
can positively affect your work setting will increase your confidence
level.
Set short-term and long-term goals that are reasonable and achievable. Target short-term goals that give you achievable triumphs.
Taking small portions of an overall goal can make getting there
much more manageable. Give yourself a mental pat on the back
when you reach a short-term goal knowing that you’ve accomplished one more step toward success.

Offer yourself constant reminders of your value to the company and to
your customers. After achieving your short-term goal for the day, realize that you’ve helped the people who needed your assistance.
Set realistic goals for yourself and stick to it. Mentally set a time commitment for yourself to complete a new project that has been assigned
to you. . Also, try to set goals that will highlight your strengths and
minimize your weaknesses. Completing one short goal at a time during
the learning curve will keep you from becoming overwhelmed
If you have a repetitive task assigned on a new job, time yourself, and
set a goal to perform it a little bit faster each day.
Celebrate to rejoice in the fact you have worked diligently to bring
your self- confidence to another level. Allow yourself some fun. After
this, stretch yourself a little bit more. Make your goals bigger and challenge yourself more. Take it one step at a time at a pace that's comfortable to you.
Finally, take a step back and take a look at what you have accomplished after three months. You will probably amaze yourself at what
you have learned and what you have achieved. Now set new goals for
the next three months, and so on, and so on, and so on…Voila! Self
Confidence!
