CHURCH OF THE INCARNATION
December 2, 2012
In gratitude for the gifts we have received from God,
parishioners and visitors made a joyful return to the
Lord through their donations last weekend:
A Word from Father Bernie
Offertory Collection
11/11/12 Total Contributions: $19,856.00
11/18/12 Total Contribution: $19,858.00

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
This weekend, we begin the beautiful Season of Advent, a
time of joyful anticipation of the celebration of Jesus Christ’s
birth two thousand years ago and also a time to prepare spiritually for His Second Coming at the end of time. The first part
of Advent focuses on Jesus’ Second Coming, and the time from
December 17th until Christmas focuses on our preparation for
the celebration of His Incarnation into our world in the flesh.
Average weekly expenses in
October, 2012:
$22,087.00
Because of all the consumerism surrounding Christmas, the
Season of Advent seems so often to get lost in the shuffle. We
hear Christmas Carols and see Christmas decorations long before Thanksgiving, and most of the secular world acts as if it’s
all over with on December 26th. Actually, the Season of Christmas begins on Christmas Eve and lasts until the celebration of
the Baptism of our Lord.
It’s so easy for us to get caught up in all of the “hoopla”
that we forget what this time of the year teaches us. During
this Holy Season of Advent, we all need to spend some quiet
time regularly in preparing for Christmas. As a child, I remember one nun telling us that we should try to perform as many
good deeds as possible during this Season, each good deed
adding another piece of hay to the manger so that the Infant
Jesus would be comfortable as He lay down His head. That’s a
good practice for all of us, including adults, to follow during
this Season. Lighting candles on an Advent Wreath, not only
the one in church but also at home, is another excellent way to
prepare for Christmas. We remember then how Jesus came to
bring His light into our world.
2012 Catholic Faith Appeal Goal $269,000.00
Amount collected or pledged as of: 11/15/12
$225,223.00 — 84% of our goal
50/50 Raffle
Congratulations to
Barbara Nelson-11/20/12-$122.50
Mary Ann O’Neill-11/27/12-$127.50
THE RECENT WINNERSS!
50/50 Envelopes are available in the foyer of the church. The
drawing will take place on Wednesday morning, at 10:00 AM in
the Parish Office. To participate, place $5.00 CASH in the envelope, complete name and phone and drop it in the collection
basket or bring it into the office Monday afternoon by
3 PM. Winners will receive 50% of the proceeds, and the other
50% will go toward meeting our goal for the Catholic Faith Appeal.
Another practice I have followed for a long time is to meditate regularly during Advent on the various people in the
Christmas story. What if I were one of those shepherds in
Bethlehem or one of the Magi? What would I have done if I
were an innkeeper in Bethlehem on that first Christmas Eve,
and Mary and Joseph came to my inn? Would I have found
room for them? What if I were a servant of Mary and Joseph
and were helping them with all that needed to be done with
the birth of their little Child?
*ONLINE GIVING*
Advent is a wonderful time for meditation and quiet prayer.
Sadly, most of us are so busy with all of the material preparations for Christmas that we put the really important things on
the back burner. Let’s try seriously to make this Advent the
best one ever. May all of us become at least a little holier and,
thus, a little more like Jesus at this time of year. Let’s pay
more attention to the members of our family and their needs
rather than thinking about ourselves first. And when Christmas
comes, let’s celebrate the Birth of Jesus as He would want us
to celebrate it---by radiating His love and peace in our corner
of the world!
is a fast, easy and secure way of making contributions to our
church. Thanks to all the parishioners and visitors who have
signed up and are enjoying the comfort of not having to remember
your envelope every Sunday. Those who may be thinking about
it... you no longer have to fill out a form to create an online giving
account. Just go to:
www.incarnationchurch.org “Online Donations”
Once your account is validated, you will be able to:
• manage your family information
• view your giving history and print your giving statement
For parishioners and visitors who would like to create an account
but are not good with computers, please call Janet Flagg at 941921-6631 ext. 234 for assistance. This is a huge step for our
church to comply with “going green” and helps to cut operating
costs. Thank you.
A Blessed, Peaceful, and Happy Advent to you all!
In the Love and Peace of Jesus,
Father Bernie

Here we go again. We are entering a new liturgical
cycle with the start of Advent, cycle C.
The church gives us Advent as a time to reflect and prepare for Christmas, the birth of our savior Jesus Christ, a time to use these four
weeks to get ready. Just as we get our homes and church ready for
Christmas with lights and poinsettias, we should take this time to get
our spiritual homes ready too.

I remember that my mom wouldn’t let us decorate until just before
Christmas. I would look at all the other houses decorated and wonder
why we had to wait. She’d even keep the Thanksgiving decorations
up. I think that was her way of appeasing me. She’d say “See, the
house is decorated. Wait, be patient.”

Then as Christmas week got here we’d go “tree” shopping and you
guessed it. She waited so long that our pickin’ was pretty slim. We
always seemed to end up with a Charlie Brown shaped tree. As soon
as you put an ornament on it the branch would almost reach the floor!
As we continued to decorate it with lights and ornaments and tinsel
and a little TLC, it took shape and even looked good. Christmas was
very special to us and the neighborhood, too. You would walk around
and wish everyone “Merry Christmas” and they would wish it back to
you. Christmas Trees were called Christmas Trees; parades were
Christmas parades and no one was offended. It seems that’s society
is trying to change that. We can’t say “Merry Christmas,” can’t call it a
Christmas Tree and what ever you do “Keep Christ out of Christmas.”
What a terrible shame but we don’t have to fear. We CAN say Merry
Christmas, put up a manger, play Christmas Carols and celebrate the
birth of Jesus. Don’t let society dictate how we celebrate that birthday. You wouldn’t like someone to tell you you can’t celebrate your or
your family members’ birthday or take those balloons off your mail
box while you’re at it, I don’t believe in birthdays!

The church in her wisdom gives us Advent to prepare for that birthday
of all birthdays. We don’t decorate too soon. we cut back on the flowers in church, the music and instruments are toned down, the Advent
Wreath is up and the priests wear purple. We appear to others to be
out of step, but we know the real celebration takes place on December
25th when God gives us the best gift of all, His Son.
Sunday, December 9
So, try to avoid the trap of getting too busy with the shopping and
hustle and bustle of the season. Take it easy and pace yourself and
don’t take your decorations down too soon either. The retailers start
before Thanksgiving and then take it all away the day after Christmas.
Not at church. We keep singing those beloved Christmas Carols and
keep the decorations up for a couple of weeks. We may look strange
to the “outside world” but we know better. Let Advent be a time for
you to get ready and to return and share that gift of love that we are
lucky to be given at Christmas, the Word made flesh…

Background on the Gospel Reading
Blessing the Family Christmas Tree
“To you, O Lord, I lift my soul”
Today is the first Sunday of Advent, which is also the first
Sunday of the new liturgical year. The Advent season includes the four Sundays that precede Christmas. Advent
is a time of preparation for the coming of the Lord. In this
season, we recall two central elements of our faith: the
final coming of the Lord in glory and the incarnation of the
Lord in the birth of Jesus. The key themes of the Advent
season are watchful waiting, preparation, and justice.
In this new liturgical year, the Gospel of Luke will be the
primary Gospel proclaimed (Lectionary Cycle C). Today's
Gospel is taken from the last chapter before the passion
narrative in which Jesus is teaching in the Temple. We
hear Jesus speak to His disciples about the need for vigilance and prayer as they wait for the coming of the Son of
Man in glory. This passage marks the conclusion of a
lengthy dialogue in which Jesus predicts the destruction of
the Temple in Jerusalem, warns about the persecution
and tribulations to follow, and identifies the signs that will
signal the coming of the Son of Man in glory.
You will need water or holy water (if available) to celebrate
this blessing.
Blessing the Christmas tree is
a fun way to begin the Christmas season. You may bless
the tree as soon as you put it
up, or you can wait until after
you have decorated it. When
you are ready to do the blessing, gather everyone
around the tree and designate someone to lead the
following prayer.
Leader: Loving God, we stand before you once
again. We stand here ready to celebrate the birth of
your son, Jesus.
(Have everyone extend a hand in a gesture of blessing. Sprinkle water or holy water on the tree while
praying the following prayer.)
The community for whom Luke wrote his Gospel may
have believed that they were already experiencing some
of the events Jesus described. Most scholars believe that
Luke's Gospel was written after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 A.D. At the time, many Christians interpreted this event as an indication that Jesus'
second coming was near.
Leader: Bless this tree, this sign of life and freshness and perseverance in our midst. It stands as a
reminder that you are born anew in us each day.
Bless our family and friends as we celebrate this joyous season. Keep us safe in our travels, kind in our
conversations, and gracious in our giving and receiving. We ask you this in confidence, because we
know you love us.
Though Jesus predicts a time of destruction and fear, Jesus indicates that others will be frightened; Jesus' disciples are not to fear, but are to stand tall. Yet Jesus does
not promise deliverance from anxiety or tribulations. He
encourages His disciples to pray for strength. The early
Christian communities did not find consolation in the promise of a utopia, nor should we. Instead, we find in our
Christian faith the means by which we witness to God's
unfailing love for us in all circumstances.
All: Amen.
(Join in singing a favorite Christmas carol, such as
“O Christmas Tree” or “Joy to the World.”)

Jesus' predictions about the end times may sound dire,
but in the next paragraph Luke tells us that people woke
early to listen to Jesus' teaching in the Temple area. In His
person and in His message, those who heard Jesus found
strength and consolation. Like the first Christians, we may
encounter events and circumstances that could lead us to
despair. Through prayer, however, we find strength and
consolation in Jesus' words and in His continuing presence with us to endure all things and to witness to the action of God in our world.
There is a Children’s Liturgy meeting this Sunday,
Dec. 2, following the 9
a.m. Mass in the Parish
Center Conference Room. Team Members
and all individuals interested in helping out
with this important ministry are encouraged
to attend.

RAFFLE OF A BAS-RELIEF OF THE HOLY
FAMILY TO BENEFIT PARISH ORGAN FUND
Incarnation Women’s Club
Dates to remember:
In order to raise funds for the purchase of a badly needed new
church organ, we are holding four
raffles of beautiful religiousthemed bas-reliefs. The first basrelief is of the Holy Family and
was designed by the Italian artist,
Paolo Schiraldi. It is marble dust
coated and galvanized in silver,
with a solid wood frame. The sale
of raffle tickets will begin this
weekend. Cost is five dollars
($5.00) or three for ten dollars ($10.00). The drawing will
be at the Parish Christmas Party on Sunday, December
16th. The winner does not need to be present. The other
three raffles will be held in the New Year. The other basreliefs are of the Divine Mercy, Madonna and Child, and
Blessed John Paul II. Raffle tickets can be purchased after
all Masses on the weekend or at the Parish Office. The bas
-relief will be on display in the foyer of the church. Please
support this worthy cause!
December 7th - First Friday Mass at 11:00.
There will be no luncheon after Mass this
month
December 11, 2012 is our next Eucharistic

The Saturday 4:30 choir is always looking for people
who have sung previously in a choral group. We rehearse at 3:00 PM on Saturday afternoon, and then
we sing at the 4:30 Mass. If you are a snow bird, all
we ask is that you will be here for at least a month.
Please come up and speak to someone in the choir
after the 4:30 Mass, or talk to Jody Wolters, the director of the choir, after any Mass. He is usually at the
piano or the organ.
He place in our heart a true appreciation of life from conception to natural death. Amen

CHURCH OF THE INCARNATION
December 2, 2012
Religious Education
Dear Families of Incarnation,
How wise can a church be to create a season to prepare for
Christmas? How fortunate that a whole month of
anticipation makes us all feel happy that such a holy day
exists. Some say it is too much work and time to prepare.
But if done prayerfully, it will be peaceful and joyful.
Whether baking cookies or making decorations, have
traditional Christmas Carols playing in the background.
Find the words online and teach the children those holy
carols. Make an Advent wreath or purchase one for the
dining room table and light it each night before dinner.
Use an Advent prayer guide for the prayer of the day.
Make a donation of a toy for our migrant children in
Wauchula. Come to a penance service. Have the children
write up a Christmas card for a soldier in Afghanistan.
Make cookies for an elderly neighbor.
These simple measures teach our children generosity and
charity. These are lessons for a life time. Our Church
helps us prepare. So even in the midst of all the
commercialism, we can make time for prayer, family and
service. And we can sing along in the tradition of Andy
Williams, that it is “The most wonderful time of the year!”
May the Baby Jesus bless you and keep you close to his
heart.. John Garisto, DRE
Please share your faith with
the children of Incarnation.

Christmas Holiday
Dec. 17th – Jan. 7th
It’s that time of year again, and we are asking for your help.
Incarnation Church is bringing Christmas to the children
of migrant workers at St. Michael’s, our sister church in Wauchula.
Please help us accomplish our goal by bringing in new, unwrapped toys
for children from Pre-K to High School.
You may drop your donation in the toy boxes at Sunday Mass
or to the Religious Ed. Office by Dec. 16th.
Thank you for sharing your
Christmas spirit with the children.
