“Classic true story comes to life with charming children and
a heart-tugging ending. Yes Virginia really does make you
believe in Santa Claus. Great for the entire family.”
– Audrey Putnam, Lansing Civic Players, Lansing, Mich.
Yes Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus - Family drama. By Andrew
J. Fenady. Based on the teleplay by Val DeCrowl and Andrew J. Fenady. Cast:
17m., 8w., extras (doubling possible). Inspired by a simple, poignant letter written
over a hundred years ago by 8-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon to the editor of the New
York Sun—and by the timeless editorial response printed on the front page of the Sun.
Virginia wondered and wrote: “Dear Editor, I am eight years old. Some of my little
friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says if you see it in the Sun, it’s so. Please tell
me the truth. Is there a Santa Claus?” Ed Mitchell, the Sun’s editor, gives the assignment of answering Virginia’s letter to Frank Church, who, until his wife and baby died
last Christmas Eve, was the Sun’s best and most dependable reporter. Yes Virginia,
There Is a Santa Claus is a play for young and old, magically reaffirming life’s highest beauty and joy— “the eternal light with which childhood fills the world.” Area

Black Nativity - The Christmas story in dialogue, narrative, pantomime, gospel song
and folk spirituals—the unique creation of the poet and playwright Langston Hughes. Cast:
variable. “His tone has that intimate, elusive, near-tragic, near-comic sound of the Negro blues,
and is equally defiant of analysis” is how a critic described this work by Langston Hughes, who
mentions Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Carl Sandburg and Walt Whitman as his main literary influences. As a young man, Hughes participated enthusiastically in the activities of the Karamu Players
in Cleveland, and later he was to found Negro theatres in Harlem, Los Angeles and Chicago. He
wrote a number of plays and musicals and then came to his own special creation which he calls
“the Gospel Song-Play”... which is Black Nativity. First performed at the York Theatre and then
at President Kennedy’s International Jazz Festival, it went on to cause a sensation at the Festival
of Two Worlds at Spoleto, Italy. A New York Times critic reporting from Spoleto wrote, “Sophisticated Italian audiences greeted Black Nativity with enthusiasm, taking part in the singing
and hand clapping and insisting on curtain call after curtain call.” The staid Rome newspaper II
Tempo wrote, “The elegant festival public appeared to have forgotten itself, lost in this rhythmic
wave that overwhelmed it, an integral part itself that bound stage and auditorium in a mystical
fusion.” In London, Oslo, Brussels, Copenhagen and Rotterdam, Black Nativity triumphed before
its return to New York and the then-new Lincoln Center. Black Nativity is designed for you to add
the music of your choice (from spirituals to traditional carols or your original compositions) and
dance. This thrilling holiday piece will have your audiences on their feet! Simple set. Royalty:

They Sing Christmas Up in Harlem: A Lenox Avenue Christmas Carol - A play with improvised music. By Eric
LeRoy Wilson. Cast: 6m., 6w. (may be expanded to 5 more actors,
either gender). In Harlem, in the late 1920s, there lived a numbersrunning gangster by the name of Ebenezer Scrooge who’s very name
strikes terror into the heart of the Harlem community. But now, on
a crisp Christmas Eve, it is Scrooge’s turn to be frightened. Ancestral ghosts arrive, attempting to save Scrooge (and Harlem) from
hate. Swinging through the past, present and future, this modern-

the Harlem Renaissance. Narrated by a bass player named Charlie,
gospel-moaning ghosts, cutthroat gangsters, struggling citizens and

Comfort and Joy - Comedy. By Jack Heifner. Cast: 4m., 2w.
Comfort and Joy takes
place during the Christmas season in a house in the Hollywood Hills. Scott and Tony are a happily married couple in the middle of a holiday disaster. Scott’s recently widowed, demanding
mother arrives from Texas convinced that her son is really straight. Tony’s brother (who has
been thrown out of his own house by his wife) is camped out on the sofa threatening suicide.
Finally, Tony’s sister unexpectedly arrives from South America in a very pregnant condition.
Chaos is the order of the day. Into this holiday whirlwind descends an unusual fairy who
teaches the families about love, hope and forgiveness. The fairy plays with time—sending
the characters into their pasts to face the reasons for their current problems. Inventive and
hilarious, this is a fast-moving, funny, touching play. One int. set. Approximate running time: 2
hours, 15 minutes. Royalty: $65/ performance. Price: $7.50. Code: CA8.

Uh-Oh, Here Comes Christmas - Comedy/Drama/ (optional) Musical. Based on the books by Robert Fulghum. Adapted by Ernest Zulia and David
Caldwell. Music and lyrics by David Caldwell. Cast: 3m., 2w. 1 pianist (may be expanded). Fifteen holiday stories from the international best-selling author of All I Really
Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten have been crafted into an engaging evening
of storytelling and song. Drawn from Fulghum’s five books that have sold over 15 million copies, this charming show takes a funny, heartwarming and often poignant look
at the struggle to find the spirit of the holidays amid the avalanche of commercialism,
stress and chaos that seems to come crashing down every December. Among the many
delightful stories is one about a small immigrant child who comes trick-or-treating in a
cheap Santa mask a few days before Christmas, inadvertently delivering the true meaning of the season to a grownup with a serious case of “Scroogitis”; hilarious musings
about a love/hate relationship with the vibrant poinsettia that arrives in most homes
every December and hangs on and on and on, long after the holidays have ended; and
a beautiful, deeply moving tribute to the winter solstice, celebrating nature’s precious
annual gift of rebirth. Uh-Oh, Here Comes Christmas is a refreshing alternative to A
Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker and is a wonderful sequel to the stage version of
All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten (possibly featuring the same cast).
The four original songs and the many favorite holiday tunes can be performed with solo
piano accompaniment or four-piece orchestration. Easy to stage, this charming event
will rekindle the true spirit of the holidays in your adult and family audiences. Various
music packages are available. Simple unit set. Royalty: $65/ performance, plus optional
music rental. Price: $7.50. Code: U25.
James F. Engelhardt Carol Weiss
The Fir Tree - Musical. Book by James F. Engelhardt. Music and lyrics by Carol Weiss. Based on the story by Hans Christian
Andersen. Cast: 3m., 2w. (may be expanded). Hans Christian Andersen
transforms a tiny fir tree and an unhappy boy into a finely woven tale of
happiness and sharing. In a world of joy and plenty, young Eric and the
little fir tree are frustrated to be so small. The tree is so eager to be grown
that it misses the beauty around it: warm sun, gentle breezes, the singing
stream. For Eric and the fir tree, happiness will come when they are tall,
Hans Christian Andersen
until...one rapturous day Eric chooses the little fir to be his Christmas tree.
Too soon the holiday passes. Eric keeps wishing he were big. The little
tree finds itself dry and lonely in the attic. But all is not lost; our fir tree
discovers its happiness in sharing its stories with the resident house mice.
In a final act of giving, the little tree transmits its wisdom to Eric through
a dream. Carol Weiss’ songs and exuberant score add luster to this Christmas gem! One int., one exterior set. Promotional CD available. Royalty
on application, plus music rental. Price: $8.50. Code: F46.
A wonderful addition to the Christmas holiday repertoire.
Easily staged, manageable casting, good songs.
Our audience loved it and asked that we
consider bringing it back in future years.

The Last Christmas Carol - Musical. Book and lyrics by David Meyers.
Music by Scott Michal. Inspired by Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Cast: 22 to 40
or more (approximately half m.), extras, chorus. Doubling possible. The holidays are here
again! But is that any reason for another production of A Christmas Carol? Brodwyn Branson, the Scrooge-like director of a local children’s theatre, certainly doesn’t think so. But
without the green it brings in, his little drama company would be in the red! Still, Branson
can barely conceal his contempt for the whole affair. But just as Branson’s humbug-ish attitude is beginning to rub off on his young actors and threatens to ruin the show, he is visited
by a series of Christmas spirits, including his former agent, an acid-tongued drama critic,
and an Elvis impersonator whose specialty is smelling like The King. Subjected to an eyeopening tour of his own life, Branson comes to understand that the message of the classic
Dickens tale is every bit as relevant today as it ever was. And, miraculously, the kids pull
the show together in the nick of time. A witty script, delightful characters, and unforgettable
songs make The Last Christmas Carol the perfect show to put any Scrooge in the holiday
spirit! Bare stage w/props. Approximate running time: 2 hours. Royalty on application, plus
music rental. Price: $8.50. Code: L08.

HOLIDAY PLAYS AND MUSICALS
FRANK CAPRA’S HOLIDAY CLASSIC
“Rodgers’ version is a very faithful adaptation of Capra's classic.
He obviously knows what average American community theatres are looking for.
It's also broken down into very manageable segments, making rehearsals easier.
Crowd appeal was very high and no one minded that our leading man
looked/sounded nothing like Jimmy Stewart!” -Neal Lewing, Port Polson Players Theater, Polson, Mont.
James W. Rodgers
Frank Capra
It’s a Wonderful Life - Drama. Adapted for the stage by James
W. Rodgers. Based on the film by Frank Capra. Cast: 12m., 10w., 2
boys, 2 girls (doubling possible). In our American culture, It’s a Wonderful Life has become almost as familiar as Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
The story is a natural for a stage adaptation: the saga of George Bailey,
the Everyman from the small town of Bedford Falls, whose dreams of
escape and adventure have been quashed by family obligation and civic
duty, whose guardian angel has to descend on Christmas Eve to save
him from despair and to remind him—by showing him what the world
would have been like had he never been born—that his has been, after
all, a wonderful life. This faithful adaptation has all your favorite characters: George and Mary Bailey, Clarence, Uncle Billy, Violet, and, of
course, the Scrooge-like villain, Mr. Potter. This fine dramatization not
only celebrates the faith of the season, but also celebrates the American
philosophy of life: hard work, fair play and the love and support of one’s
family and community will be rewarded. Unit set. Available in the U.S.
only. Royalty: $65/ performance. Price: $7.50. Code: I 51.
James W. Rodgers John Higgins
It’s a Wonderful Life -The Musical. Book and lyrics
by James W. Rodgers. Music by John Higgins. Based on the film by
Frank Capra. Cast: 12m., 10w., 2 boys, 2 girls (doubling possible, additional townspeople as desired). A beautiful and melodic score has been
added to James W. Rodgers’ faithful and popular adaptation. Capturing both the spirit and the period of the original, the musical selections
offer a wide variety of delightful and heartwarming melodies that can
be easily managed by quality actors with natural but untrained voices.
The songs have been carefully interwoven into the fabric of the book
not only to set mood and atmosphere but to heighten action, delineate
characters, and establish underlying themes. Like the play version , the
musical is easily accessible to community and school groups. Staging
has been kept to a minimum requiring only a simple unit set with limited props, costumes and lighting effects. All the great characters are
here: George (“Something Important”), Mary (“Quiet Wishes; Simple
Dreams”), Clarence (“I Want to Fly”), Violet (“I Love to Dance”), Uncle
Billy and Aunt Tilly (“Whoops! Another Year’s Gone By”), and Potter
(“Easy Living”), 22 songs in all. Solos, duets, ensembles and full chorus

Dylan Thomas
A Child’s Christmas in Wales - Musical. Adapted by
Jeremy Brooks and Adrian Mitchell. Based on the classic by Dylan
Thomas. Cast: 13m., 7w., chorus, extras. All your Christmases will
live again in the magic of Dylan Thomas’ poetic language. “I can never
remember whether it snowed for six days and six nights when I was
twelve or twelve days and twelve nights when I was six.” Despite the
fact that this is a Welsh Christmas and the music is also Welsh, Dylan
Thomas has managed to universalize the very essence of Christmas as
any child anywhere might perceive it. If the play has a plot it is the story
of Christmas day itself, from its quiet, magical beginning full of thrilling
expectations to the end when the boy Dylan creeps up to the bed, replete
with the joy of a perfect Christmas. The cast is flexible and the staging
should be kept simple, attempts at realism would undermine the child’seye view. This is Christmas just the way Christmas always should be.

musical based on the book by Earl Hamner Jr. (creator of “The Waltons”

humor, love and family values. The story takes place on Dec. 24, 1933,
in a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia where Olivia and
her children are preparing for Christmas and waiting for Daddy to come
home. They sing as they make “Applesauce Cake” and listen to Grandpa
and Grandma tell about the Depression in “Hard Times.” Clay-Boy tries
to be like his daddy in “My Father, Clay Spencer” and Becky, frustrated
with household chores, sings and dances a flapper number, “When I Grow
Up.” The whole family trims the tree to a rousing polka, “Let’s Have a
Merry Christmas.” Clay-Boy goes looking for his father at the pool hall
(“Pool Hall Blues”); at Mr. Dooly’s church where a Christ-mas pageant
is in progress accompanied by a choir and children singing spirituals; and
at the Staples home where Miss Etta sings a wistful waltz about “Ashley
Longworth” who once kissed her. Clay Spencer arrives home at midnight
with his arms full of gifts and his heart full of love and joy for his family and
friends in “Christmas Ev’ry Day of My Life.” On hearing these songs for
the first time, Earl Hamner said, “I had already fallen in love with the lyrics
and I feel the same way about the melodies. The music is everything I could

Charles Dickens’ story. Cast: 10m., 9w., 4 ghosts, extras. Here’s a

Christmas Future. They bring revelations to Scrooge, mainly about
himself, and he’s shocked into action that centers about the poor but

with a unique dramatic concept: at the opening curtain, Charles Dickens himself is introduced to the
audience, ready to present one of the famed platform readings of his stories that packed auditoriums
in Europe and America. Of course, the story chosen is one which he often performed, A Christmas
Carol (Dickens’ marked-up script still exists!). The story unfolds behind him, and soon Dickens is
weaving in and out of the action, observing, performing small roles, interpolating short passages of
rich narrative never heard in other versions. He handles props and helps Scrooge and others with
costume changes. Originally conceived for Mr. Jakes’ home stage, the Hilton Head Playhouse, the
play is supremely flexible in cast and design. The piece includes “God Bless Us Everyone,” a lovely
new carol by Jakes and Tony-nominated composer Mel Marvin, as well as suggestions for placement
of incidental music. Unit set. Approximate running time: 1 hour, 30 minutes. Accompaniment CD
“God Bless Us Everyone” is available for purchase (Q17 - $15.00). Royalty: $65/ performance.

A Country Christmas Carol is ideal family holiday fare—fresh, engaging, often hilarious, and genuinely moving. It’s a timeless tale of

JOY! - Musical. Book by Ruth Perry. Lyrics by David Rogers.
Music by Diane Leslie. Cast:10m., 4w., a chorus and extras. A thrilling and unusual musical that approaches the subject in a way that’s
especially exciting to young people. This is a Christmas musical with
which they’ll truly involve themselves. It begins almost casually with

clothes. They’ve come to a first rehearsal of a nativity play, but there are
no scripts and no director. For the fun of it, they decide to improvise their
own staging of the nativity and to do it in terms of their own music and

The Gift of the Magi -
Drama. Adapted by Anne Coulter

touching and beautiful story of a young couple unable to afford presents for each other on their first Christmas together. Each sacrifices
a treasure to provide a gift for the other but, in so doing, they work

love and the value of giving. Indeed, the Magi were wise—and their
gifts were wise gifts, however foolish in the eyes of the practical.

O Christmas Three! - A trilogy of one-act comedies with mu-

Turkey, Parker and Penelope Penguin, Vincent the Violet-Nosed Vulture, the Ice Elves, the Short Squat Trolls and, of course, Sandy and
Santa Claus populate this delightful Christmas fairyland. Inspired by the
national best-selling children’s book Father Gander Nursery Rhymes:
The Equal Rhymes Amendment, these comedies bring joy to the holiday world. A goofy, good-natured vulture unwittingly volunteers to be
roasted for Christmas dinner in the interactive Dorcas the Christmas
Duck: A Cautionary Tale. A tall, Ice Elf is ridiculed by the Short Squat
Trolls when the Claus family considers relocating to the South Pole in
The Last Straw: A Christmas Fable, and the Turkey family performs

“The interaction with the audience was a huge success.”

The Snow Queen - Fairy tale. Adapted by Stuart Paterson. Based on the story by Hans
Christian Andersen. With incidental music by Savourna Stevenson. Cast: 4m., 4w., 1 m. or w. with
doubling. One of the most beautiful of all fairy tales, the timeless appeal of The Snow Queen lies in
its persuading us that life is truly magical. Andersen’s wonderful language surfaces in Grandma’s
description of the Snow Queen—“On winter nights when we are asleep she flies silently through
the streets and alleyways. Sometimes she stops to look through a window, and when you get up
the window is covered with flowers of frost for she has breathed on the glass.” The wicked Snow
Queen casts her icy spell on the world, turns young Kay’s heart to ice and takes him away as her
eternal prisoner to her ice palace at the very top of the world. Gerda, Kay’s friend, must journey
forever north and brave many dangers to save Kay and break winter’s grip. She never gives up,
and leads us through terrifying ordeals as well as endless fun and nonsense, encountering talking
ravens, the evil Cobweb Spider, a prince and princess, the wild robber-girl, greedy polar bears and
the brave reindeer who carries Gerda across the arctic, in this wonderful, fast-paced adventure
story. Area staging. Optional underscore CD available. Promotional CD available. Royalty: $65/

The Snow Queen and the Goblin - Fairy tale. Adapted by Martha Bennett
King. Based on the Hans Christian Andersen story. Cast: 3m., 2w., 1 boy, 1 girl, extras.
Can anyone steal happiness? Living in an ice palace of dazzling beauty, the Snow Queen
watches two children, Kay and Gerda, who live in a cozy attic with their loving grandmother.
She orders her goblin, Acha, to steal Kay, whose laughter, songs and games will enliven her
frozen home and bring happiness. A jealous Acha uses his magic mirror to lure him and put
him under a spell. Gerda is terrified but goes searching for Kay, her only weapons; faith and
her grandmother’s song. With these she passes even the ice spears of the Queen’s guards and
finds Kay in the throne room. He works intently with the pieces of a puzzle and does not
recognize Gerda. Heartbroken, Gerda falls to the ground and the goblin instantly encloses her
in a cake of clear ice. A breathless audience waits for Kay to wake up! Two int. sets. Royalty:

True Boardman
The Most Beautiful Star - A small
miracle play. By True Boardman. Cast: 4m.,
1w., 1 boy, 1 girl, extras. A little girl is helping her family decorate the Christmas tree, but
it isn’t easy, and gradually we realize that she’s
blind. The child is thrilled as they describe the
many colors of the decorations, especially the
star for the top of the tree. The top, however, is
out of reach, so they decide to put the star up first
thing tomorrow, Christmas morning. The girl is
so excited about the colorful descriptions of the
tree that she goes to bed praying, once again, for
Jesus to give her back her sight. With tact and
love her family encourages her not to expect too
much. Outside, a man asks some carollers the location of a certain family—he’s been invited. In
a moment he’s beside the girl’s bed, and as she
wakes up something incredible happens—she
sees him! They go to the tree and together they
put the star on top. He encourages her to take a
long, look at the many colors, and that although
it will be some years, she will see again. Christmas morning the family gathers by the tree and
the little girl astounds them with the details of
the decorations, then, to their astonishment,
points to the ornament now shining on top—the
most beautiful star! Area staging. Royalty: $35/

The Toys Take Over Christmas - Drama. By Patricia Clapp.
Cast: 4m., 6w. The hardhearted toymaker refuses to sell any of the dolls
he makes, but his magic has made them almost like real children and they
want to escape the workshop and have fun with other children. The toys
are wonderfully varied. There’s prim Tina, the fashion-plate doll; a tomboy
clown who is so afraid of the toymaker that she agrees with everything he
says; and the rag doll, Sunny, whose legs were badly stuffed so she’s always
on the verge of falling down and has to be helped up by the gallant wooden
soldier. Now the toys are in revolt against the toymaker, and when they find
a jar of hearts, they pin one on him. Zowie—the heart does its stuff! One int.

The Christmas Miser -
Drama. By Sherman L. Sergel.
Cast: 4m., 8w. Arthur is a tight-fisted, grasping old penny-pincher.
He’s also a famous actor playing Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. On stage, Arthur’s friendly warmth has made his audience love
him. Backstage, it’s different. He fires an actor who’s late for rehearsal
when the young man had to arrange for an operation for his wife.
When he is visited by a once-promising actress whom he fired and by
his sister, what they say shakes him. An old cleaning woman appears
and makes Arthur resolve to make amends. Suddenly He realizes that
it’s Christmas and that he strongly resembles another famous old miser! Like Scrooge, he takes steps—joyous steps! Bare stage w/props.

“A Merry Medieval Christmas was a new and different
experience for our cast and our audiences!
Background on the play was printed in the program
and also given in a pre-curtain speech to the audiences–which here are very conservative. The result: they loved it!
A number of people came a second time and brought
friends.” –Dr. Mary H. Ellis, Theatre Plus, Inc., Port Gibson, Miss.
Fantasy. Adapted by June Walker Rogers.
Cast: 10m., 12w., extras. The legend of the Nutcracker lives on in this
captivating play. At a gala Christmas Eve party, Clara’s godfather presents her with an amazing Nutcracker in the form of a wooden soldier.
Too excited to sleep, she suddenly finds the Nutcracker brought to life.
He is a prince, under the wicked enchantment of the Mouse King, and
she joins him in a series of adventures in strange lands as he seeks to
regain his throne. When she wakes, she finds the Nutcracker gone. Was
it a dream or not? Then her godfather returns with his nephew—who
just happens to look exactly like the prince! The Nutcracker may be enhanced with dances to the music of Tchaikovsky. One int. set. Royalty:

Ms. Scrooge -
P.M. Clepper’s all-female adaptation of Dickens’
classic. Cast: 22w., extras. Edna Scrooge has sacrificed love and friendship to be a success. To her, Bobbie is just an impersonal office machine.
Alone on Christmas Eve, the overworked Edna hallucinates—with
ghostly help—about her grim past and grimmer future. We already know
what we’re getting with old Ebenezer—but Ms. Scrooge is a whole new
Christmas experience. Your cast and your audience will love it! One int.

The Spirit of Christmas or The Story of Ernestina Scrooge
- Drama. By Tom Fuller. Cast: 5 principal roles (total variable, 13 to 52).
This adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol was selected by the Playwrights’ Center of Minneapolis. It is well suited to the needs of high schools
and community theatres, since it has an assortment of fine roles for women.

seems he married and had a son, who had a son, who moved to America and
had a daughter, Ernestina, who is the leading lady of this play. Area staging.

A Merry Medieval Christmas! - Comedy. By Thomas
A. Erhard and Evelyn Madrid Erhard. Cast: 6 or more actors. A
different Christmas show, funny yet reverent, that does not demand
a theatre. This is an hour-long modernization of half a dozen English
miracle plays. The originals overflowed with contemporary humor
when first done, yet the underlying faith always shone through. Watch
God create the universe (including your hometown), boo the villain,
Satan, recognize yourselves in Adam and Eve, watch in sadness as
Cain defies God, laugh at the arguments between Noah and his wife as
they embark on their rickety ark, enjoy the slapstick of the shepherds
as they journey from your part of the world to a reverent meeting
in Bethlehem and conclude with joyous cast-and-audience caroling.
Two stepladders and half a dozen stools are all you need for a set. It’s
an evening of warm sharing for all ages. Bare stage w/props. Royalty:

A Laura Ingalls Wilder Christmas - Drama. By Laurie
Brooks. Cast: 2m., 5w. In their poorest winter ever, when the crops
have been devastated by locusts and the family must deal with the
death of baby Freddie, Charles Ingalls backtracks his family to Burr
Oak, Iowa, to take over the running of a hotel. And if things weren’t
bad enough, Ma tells Laura she must be nice to Johnny Steadman,
“the worst boy in Iowa.” When wealthy Mrs. Starr asks for Laura
as a companion to read to her in the afternoons, Laura is overjoyed
to be invited into such a fine house, but when she overhears Mrs.
Starr offer to adopt Laura as her own daughter to ease the burden of
so many children, Laura is certain that Ma and Pa will give her up.
As Christmas morning approaches, Laura is faced with a decision:
Will she choose what she believes is best for the family or will she
find a way to stay with Pa, Ma, Mary and Carrie? This original play
presents the poignant story of the “missing” two years in the life of
the Ingalls family—the only substantial period that Laura chose not to
write about in her Little House books. Told with period songs, humor
and depth of character, A Laura Ingalls Wilder Christmas tells a story
of healing that celebrates the importance of enduring family bonds.

A joyous new musical retelling of the Nativity story.
Angels and All Children - Musical. Book and lyrics by Walter
Wangerin Jr. Music by Randy Courts. Cast: 3m., 2w., and a chorus of infinite
size. Angels and All Children is a musical retelling of the Nativity story that
can be performed with grand elaboration or sweet simplicity. The world lies in
darkness. Time is stuck at midnight, and the children of the world are unable to
awaken from sleep until the morning light returns. Until then, the parents are
sad and lonely. But God loves the world and decides to send a savior. He sends
a baby, born in a manger, to bring light to the world and angels to awaken the
children. There are five individual characters: a narrator, God, Gabriel, Mary
and Joseph, and a chorus of any size. Children may easily participate in the
joyous resolution of the story. This is a fresh, accessible, marvelously emotional
approach to the story of the birth of the child Jesus. The set is infinitely flexible

tells the story of a Jewish brother and sister who journey west on an orphan train in 1905. Arriving
with other homeless youths in a tiny Nebraska town just before the holidays, Benjamin and Rose
are adopted by Wellspring’s only Jewish couple, Abe and Sophie Birnbaum. Devout 12-year-old
Benjamin clashes with Abe, a successful shopkeeper who has abandoned his religion. Meanwhile,
15-year-old Rose falls secretly in love with a fellow orphan, thus upsetting Sophie’s marriage plans
for the girl. Townsfolk are further divided by the fearful banker, Maxwell Ryder, who wants to send
all of the orphans back to New York. As the town prepares for Christmas and Hanukkah approaches,
Benjamin finds himself enlisting the young people—orphans and local kids alike—on a quest to
