Tiana Kaye Johnson (Lily) is
currently an MFA candidate for Acting
at Southern Methodist University.
Recent SMU: Look Homeward, Angel
(Eliza Gant). She received her BA
in Theater from Prairie View A&M
University where she was seen in Once
on This Island (Madame Armand/Andrea/Storyteller), To Be
Young Gifted and Black (Lorraine Hansberry), and Jelly’s
Last Jam (Anita). Tiana is a proud company member of
The Ensemble Progress Theatre, based in Houston, TX.
She holds the title of Miss South Dallas, enjoys serving the
community and inspiring social change through the arts.
Brandon PoTTer (Alex) is the
newest member of DTC's Brierley
Resident Acting Company, where his
credits include A Christmas Carol and
King Lear. He has appeared onstage in
Dallas/Ft. Worth, Austin, San Francisco
and New York. Brandon’s voice has
been heard internationally in cartoons, video games,
television and radio commercials, and numerous online
outlets. He holds an MFA in acting from SMU.
sarah ruTan (Jen) spent seven
seasons as a member of the acting
company at the Oregon Shakespeare
Festival, where her work included:
Othello; The Taming of the Shrew;
The Diary of Anne Frank; Coriolanus;
Love’s Labours Lost; Much Ado About
Nothing; As You Like It and many others. Other regional
theaters include: Milwaukee Repertory Theater (Pride and
Prejudice) Shakespeare in the Park - Bend (A Midsummer
Night’s Dream) and Pasadena Playhouse (A Footnote to the
Iliad.) She is currently an MFA candidate for Acting at SMU.

and the adaptation of Helen Thorpe's nonfiction book
Just Like Us. Her TYA musicals with composer Deborah

Roberto Clemente; Jane of the Jungle; Cinderella Eats Rice
and Beans; Ferdinand the Bull; and Frida Libre. Her plays

the Performing Arts, Alliance Theatre, Imagination Stage,

Brian mcdonald (Sound Designer) is currently the
Sound Supervisor at the DTC. He previously served as the
production manager and technical director for Shakespeare
Dallas and Technical Director for The University of North

Project X Theatre, and The Festival Ballet of North Central
Texas. Brian spent several years working in higher
education, holding positions at the University of North
Texas and Texas Woman’s University. He also works as
a recording engineer and producer with releases on Idol
Records, GIA, Vandan Records, Elba Records, Drop6 Media,
Equilibrium and more.
BarB hicKs (Production Manager) served as the Costume
Shop Manager at Dallas Theater Center for many years prior
to, most recently, leading the Costume Department at the
Alabama Shakespeare Festival. She is enjoying her second
season back at DTC, leading the Production Department
through this exciting, thrilling adventure of a season.

House Theatre, Blake Robison, Artistic Director, in JanuaryFebruary 2008. The Book Club Play was presented at
Berkshire Theatre Festival, Stockbridge, Massachusettes,
Kate Maquire, Artistic Director, July 13-20, 2008. The Book
Club Play was presented at Arena Stage,Washington, D.C.,
Molly Smith, Artistic Director, October 9-November 6, 2011.

Kevin MOriArty is the
artistic director of Dallas Theater
Center, where his work as a
director includes: It's a Bird... It's
a Plane... It's Superman; The Who's
Tommy; The Wiz; A Midsummer
Night’s Dream; Henry IV; The
Tempest; Fat Pig; Next Fall; his
original adaptation of A Christmas
Carol; Oedipus el Rey; and most
recently, Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure. Since 2007
he has led DTC through many new initiatives, including the
move into the Wyly Theatre; the creation of the Brierley
Resident Acting Company; an extensive series of new play
productions; community collaborations with North Texas
Food Bank, Dallas Holocaust Museum, Dallas Museum of Art,
and most of the region's theater companies; and multi-year
partnerships with Booker T. Washington High School for the
Visual and Performing Arts and SMU Meadows School of the
Arts. Before joining DTC, Kevin served as the artistic director
of the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca, NY, for seven years. From
2002-2007 Kevin was the Head of Directing for the Brown
University/Trinity Rep MFA Program in Providence, RI, and he
was an Associate Artist at Trinity Rep Company. He made his
operatic directing debut with The Lighthouse for The Dallas
Opera in 2012, and is directing The Marriage of Figaro in their
2014-2015 season. Kevin has served as a public school music
teacher at La Crescent High School in La Crescent, MN, and
as an Associate Professor at Brown University. Kevin is the
Vice-Chair of the Dallas Arts District; a member of the Boards
of Trustees for the Booker T. Washington Advisory Board,
Theatre Communications Group, and the National Alliance
for Musical Theatre; a member of the Dallas Assembly; a
recipient of a Drama League directing fellowship; and a
graduate of the University of Wisconsin.
HeAtHer M. KitCHen
joined Dallas Theater Center
as managing director in 2011.
She is now beginning her 41st
season of professional theater.
Before joining DTC she served
as executive director of American
Conservatory Theater in San
Francisco for 14 seasons where
she oversaw the growth of the
budget from $11 million to more than $19 million. Heather
led A.C.T.’s first endowment campaign, which surpassed
its $25 million goal by more than $6 million. She served
as general manager of The Citadel Theatre in Alberta,
Canada, production manager at Theatre New Brunswick,
and worked as a stage manager and / or a production stage
manager at many major theaters across Canada including
The Stratford Shakespearean Festival, The Citadel
Theatre, The Neptune Theatre, Theatre Plus, The New Play
Centre and Canadian Stage Company. Heather has guest
lectured about stage and general management extensively
throughout her career at more than a dozen universities
including Stanford University, UC Berkeley, SMU, and the
Universities of, Waterloo, Western Ontario and Guelph. Her
consulting career has centered on education accreditation
and theatre management. Clients have included Presidio
Graduate School and Bay Area TheatreSports, and The
University of Western Ontario. Heather holds an Honours
Bachelor of Arts from the University of Waterloo and a
Masters of Business Administration from The University
of Western Ontario’s renowned Richard Ivey School of
Business. Heather is also an avid amateur musician who
plays piano, flute and classical guitar.

Drama and mayhem:
the Book Club ecosystem
director MEREdITH McdonouGH joins us at dTC to
direct our first show of 2015, The Book Club Play,
playwright Karen Zacarías' smart comedy about
books and the people who love them. Before
rehearsals began, Meredith took a moment to
share a bit about what the play means for her.
I’ve never been in a book club. Reading has always
been a private activity for me—journeying alone
into new lands, meeting new people through
someone else’s eyes. I love the fantasy and the
endless personal imagination of it all. So when I
first encountered The Book Club Play, I was intrigued by the window that Karen
gave me into this unknown world. Even with all of the drama and mayhem
that these characters encounter and make for themselves, I have to say, now I’m
jealous. Of the community these groups create. They are their own ecosystem,
and in many ways, their own family. Each of the characters we meet in this play
is trying to figure out their own path, and each are fighting their own loneliness
in this public way. I’m fascinated by the juxtaposition the play presents as the
character’s innermost interpretations are displayed through the public eye of this
documentary filmmaker. How suddenly the act of “performing” ones thoughts
changes them. I certainly understand the desire to somehow find intimacy in
such clinical and observed situations, and find the plight of these characters truly
funny in their base humanity. I think we might all behave just as badly under the
manipulative microscope of Lars Knudsen…
I hope you can find a bit (or maybe more than a bit) of yourself in this world.
I’m sure you’ll recognize your own book club’s politics at play (or if you’re like
me, and book club-less, just substitute your favorite group of friends). We come
together in the theater to laugh together, to celebrate the live-ness of sharing
someone else’s struggles and victories. Take a bit of this book club into the
community that you’ve created and bring it a bit of new life!

The Clan of
the Book Club
A Conversation with the Playwright
no ordinary playwright could come up with the book-club-within-a-documentary-within-a-play
that is The Book Club Play, and Karen Zacarías is certainly anything but ordinary. dTc’s own
Travis Ballenger sat down with Karen to learn more about this very unique piece of theater.
TB: What led you to writing The Book Club Play?
KZ: I’m in a book club—in fact, I’m going to it tonight! And there was a period of time in our lives when
we first started book club in our twenties… it was after college, and we were missing talking about
great works and hanging out with friends, and it was so great drinking wine and debating the mystery
of life. Then my husband was getting his hair cut by a former FBI agent who had been in a book club for
thirty years, and he said, “You think it all is great now, but there will come a time when you’ll have to be
ruthless—absolutely ruthless—if you want to protect your book club.”
TB: Oh wow.

KZ: And we thought that was the weirdest thing we’d ever heard. And sure enough, about a month or
so later, somebody brought someone to our book club who was so annoying. (Laughs.) It brought out so
many funny, strong emotions. It was like we had become a clan, and this strange person had come in,
and he didn’t read the books, and he made fun of us… He was a lovely person, he really was, but, you
know, people stopped going, and the book club split in two and people got into fights. It was like high
school, it was completely like high school. And then I found out that this is not unique to our book club.
That any club that’s together for a long time gets tested. I would tell people on the metro or on the plane,
“Oh, I’m in a book club and I’m writing a play about book clubs.” And people would say, “Oh! My mother
was in a book club, and they decided that they could no longer serve wine and everything went to hell
in a handbasket.” Everybody had a story about their own book club. The other interesting thing is that
many more people are in book clubs than you suspect. It’s actually one of the biggest social constructs
of modern times—a way of people getting together, it’s like a salon. If you ask around your theater,
around your office, you’d be surprised how many people are a member of a book club
TB: I just started one!
KZ: There you go! I was also interested in why, in this day and age, how the antiquated art of reading
is becoming such an important way to building community.
TB: All of the characters in Book Club Play are so very diverse. They’re very different characters. You
seem to write diversity into your plays—that seems to be something that is important to you. Let me
know if I’m speaking out of turn.
KZ: Oh no, you’re totally correct.
