NEIGHBOURHOOD DEVELOPMENT PLANS
A Neighbourhood Development Plan is important as it enables local residents to have
control of the environment and development in the local area. Without an approved
plan there is virtually nothing the community can do to influence the development of
housing, infrastructure, amenities and the environment. However, without the active
involvement and support of local residents it will not be possible to complete the
Plan, obtain approval and ensure that it is embodied in the Cornwall Council Plan as a
legal document that has to be recognised in all future development approvals.
Tintagel Parish Council will be mailing every household in the Parish shortly
explaining the Plan along with a very short response form inviting offers of help. Do
you have Project Management skills, IT skills or are you interested in helping to
gather information to produce the plan? Creating a Neighbourhood Development
Plan is a local community led process by the people for the people. Tintagel Parish
Council cannot proceed with a Neighbourhood Development Plan without a high
level of support and community involvement from the people of the parish.

NEW WEBSITE LAUNCH
The Parish Council’s new website was launched on 19th January. Visit the website at
www.tintagelparishcouncil.gov.uk to find Agendas and Minutes of Meetings, Local News
and Information, Parish Council contacts, Visitor Centre Information and much more. You
can also apply for a parking permit online or apply to be a Volunteer at the Visitor Centre.
The Clerk will shortly be undertaking some training to update the website, in order that
information can be updated on a weekly basis.

PARISH COUNCILLORS AND MEETINGS
As elected and co-opted members from the community it is the duty of all Councillors to
represent the views of every parishioner. They welcome hearing from you so that they can
raise any concerns or questions you have at the regular Council meetings. The routine
agenda for each meeting covers such things as Planning, Highways, Cornwall Council issues
and correspondence, Footpaths, Parish Seats, Street Lighting and many other varied issues.
If you wish to comment on any of these items or have any others you wish to raise you
should contact a Parish Councillor or the Clerk.
HOW TO CONTACT THE COUNCIL
You can express your views in any of the following ways:
 Attending any of the council meetings, which are normally held on the first
Wednesday of every month (except August) when you can speak in the public session
on any item on the Agenda. Meetings are held at the Social Hall, Bossiney Road,
Tintagel commencing at 7.00 p.m. Agendas for ALL Parish Council meetings are
displayed on the Parish Notice Boards situated at Trevena Square, the Medical
Centre, Tintagel Social Hall, Bossiney, Trethevy, Treknow and Trewarmett. Agendas
for the monthly Parish Council meetings are displayed from the Thursday of the week
prior to the meeting.

Tintagel Visitor Centre is manned almost entirely by volunteers from the parish council
and local people. The volunteers work for the satisfaction of building our community,
assisting the thousands of tourists that visit Tintagel and the surrounding area and
helping our beautiful village to thrive.
We are in need of a few more volunteers particularly during periods of sickness and
holidays. So if you’d like to be involved, whether you can offer just 1 or 2 hours a week or
a morning or afternoon shift, we would welcome you to join our team. And although it’s
a worthy activity, it is great fun too!

overleaf or pop into the Centre for a chat. You can now also apply to be a Volunteer at

THE ROTARY CLUB OF CAMELFORD
CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARD
The President of the Rotary Club of Camelford presenting the Citizen of the Year Award and Citation to Gladys Cook
from Tintagel for her services to the community.
Gladys with her team of helpers has raised thousands of pounds over the years for many charities, local and overseas.
The Rotary Club of Camelford honoured a lady of Tintagel recently by choosing her as their
Citizen of the Year for 2013. The Rotary Club make a presentation to someone in their area
who they consider has provided exceptional service to the community.
At their Christmas dinner they presented the award to Gladys Cook. This lady has over the
past years been instrumental in raising many thousands of pounds for numerous charities
in the village, throughout the county and also the country. Gladys has lived in the village
since she married David and moved here from Michaelstow over 50 years ago. It is well
known that if you wish to have an event that requires food in particular, Gladys is the
person you need at the helm. She will always say that nothing could be achieved without
the help of all the helpers but as we all know the ship needs a captain at its head. The
charities that have been helped are too numerous to list but range from the local Chapel to
the Royal British Legion for which she was Poppy Appeal organiser for over 30 years,
Shelterbox, many cancer charities, hospices, etc.
Tintagel is proud to have one of its citizens named as Citizen of the Year. Well done Gladys.

Welcome back to everyone after the Christmas break which all seems so long ago. Our
Christmas Production of “The Magical Christmas Jigsaw” was a great success which
everyone thoroughly enjoyed. The children decided that this year the collection from the
performances and the raffle would go to Shelterbox. With an extra collection on the last
day of term we managed to raise enough to purchase our own Shelterbox which we will be
able to track! A huge thank you to everyone who donated.
Class 3 and 4 went on our annual visit to the pantomime which this year was Cinderella at
the Hall for Cornwall. They also visited Eirenikon for carol singing. On the last day of term
children played party games and discoed in the afternoon as well as receiving a special
visitor to the school…Father Christmas!
Since our return to school in January we have already started our new intense daily
swimming lessons at Camelford Leisure Centre. We would also like to remind you to make
use of the Free Family Primary Swims which are on Mondays 3:45-5pm. These are open to
any family who has a child attending any feeder primary for Sir James Smiths School.
We are also very pleased to welcome Sofie Lowe back to the office after her maternity
leave, congratulations to the Lowe family on their new arrival! Thank you to Susan
Chapman from Delabole Primary School for providing maternity cover.
If you are a girl aged between 7 and 10, and want lots of fun? Want
to make new friends, why not come along to Brownies !
We meet every Wednesday at Treknow Village Hall from 6.00 p.m. to
7.30 p.m.

TINTAGEL CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
On behalf of the Christmas Lights Working Group I would like to thank the
people who turned out on such a nasty night for the switching on of the village
Christmas lights. Once again it was a great success. Thanks go to Joseph and
Mary, Neil Caddy, Pirate FM who once again switched on the lights, Michael
Parsons, Vicar of Tintagel and Rev. Bryan Ede, Tintagel Orpheus Male Voice
Choir, Camelford Town Band, The Cornishman Inn for use of the lounge bar for
refreshments donations by Pengenna Pasties. Donations of trees from Stuart
Cornelius and Mr. Nankivell, Dean and Tawn Dangar for fetching and putting of
the trees, Ted the electrician, Nick for donating sweets, all helpers on the
barbecue, and the judges of the competition. To Tintagel Parish Council who
fund the erection and taking down of the lights and the supply of the cups
which were won by the Cornishman Inn for best dressed pub, Camping and
Leisure, Tintagel for best dressed shop and Marlyn, Danmore Close for best
dressed house and garden. Simon and Julie, Spar Shop, Tintagel for donations
of the bike for the raffle. Unfortunately, due to the inclement weather the
raffle was not drawn. On clearing up at the end of such a very wet evening, it
was found that the boards and draw tickets had been mislaid. The draw will
now take place on the 14th February, so if any person who bought tickets, could
please come forward to any member of the Lights Group, all names will be put in
a draw.

Tintagel Surf Life Saving Club
Pictured are the people who were brave enough to take part in our New Years Day
Dip. There was an excellent turn out this year with Club Members joined by locals and
visitors spurred on by plenty of support from the spectators. Afterwards we warmed up
with Mulled Wine, Hot Chocolate and warm mince pies in the Club House. This was an
excellent start to 2014 when we will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Club.
This year we have had an influx of new members, with an increased Nipper section we
are now able to have 36 members, however we still operate a waiting list for this
group. In you are interested in joining the Club please call our Chairman, Les Freke on
01840 770928 or visit our website or Facebook page for details of our activities. Winter
training sessions are well attended and have included a trip to Florider, weekly
training at the pool, multi-sports sessions and (despite colder temperatures) the Juniors
have continued to train in the sea when possible.
A huge thank you to Sarah Coates and the organisers from the BIG SWIM CORNWALL
(Port Gaverne to Port Isaac - please visit www.thebigswimcornwall.co.uk for details of
this year's swim) who have recently donated £900 to our club, for helping with safety
cover at the 2013 swim.
Future events: The Annual General Meeting and presentation are Awards will be held
on Sunday 26th January at 4pm, The Mill House, Trebarwith and please look out for the
details of events commemorating our 50th Year.

Do You Remember Itma?
I loved ITMA!. On a Thursday evening during the War years and after, in Tintagel, I would
listen every Thursday evening from 8.30pm till 9.00pm, to my favourite radio
programme. I can remember that Sunday evening January 9th 1949, when on the 6
o’clock news on the BBC Home Service, the announcer said ‘The death is announced of
Mr Thomas Handley, the comedian’. I said to my parents that can’t be Tommy Handley
but sadly it was. Tommy was only 56 years, 11 months and 23 days old. He died of a Brain
Haemorrhage.
He had just celebrated the 310th performance of Itma and seemed to be his usual bubbly
self. The show ran from July 1939 to January 6th 1949, with short breaks.
I am sure those who lived through the difficult war years thoroughly enjoyed their
weekly topical radio show and it cheered the country up. It was quick fire comedy with
an array of larger than life comic characters. Those characters included Mr Mopp,
Colonel Chinstrap, Funf, Mona Lott and Fusspot. Amongst the cast were Jack Train,
Deryk Gyler and Maurice Denham (who played the Char Lady, Mrs Lola Tickle).
Catchphrases were a critical part of the show and do you remember ‘Can I Do Yer Now
Sir?’ (Mrs Mopp), ‘I Don’t Mind If I Do’ (Colonel Chinstrap), ‘Ta-ta For Now or TTFN as it
was better known (also Mrs Mopp), ‘It’s Me Noives’ (Lefty), ‘It’s Being So Cheerful That
Keeps Me Going’ (Mona Lott), After You Claude – No, After you Cecil’ and ‘Zis Is Funf
Speaking’ (Jack Train).
Itma’s brilliances was a combination of the star. Tommy Handley, and the writer Ted
Kavanagh. It was he who took the title from a phrase invented by the Daily express in its
headlines about Herr Hitler-‘IT’S THAT MAN AGAIN’
Sir William Haley, then the BBC’s Director General, came to the microphone on the
Thursday following Tom’s death, and made a very simple and moving speech. In it he
finished with the words ‘There will never be anyone quite like That Man again’…he was
so right. In those days the humour was gentle and funny. unlike the majority of so called
comedians today, who think if foul language is not used, they would not be so funny.
How pathetic, and I wonder what Tommy Handley would have thought of them!!

Tintagel Sea Angling Club Newsletter

A happy New Year to you all from everyone at Tintagel Sea
Angling Club.
Sea temperatures have just dipped below double figures at 90C at the
time of writing which is relatively mild for January. The usual winter
species are present and whiting dab, codling, haddock, coalfish and
flounder are all being recorded around our shores.
The Fish of the month winner in November was Iain Mackay with a new
club boat record haddock of 4lb 12 ½ ozs. Nigel Rundle won the flatfish
of the month in December with a flounder of 2lb 2ozs. The end of year
results are now complete and Nigel won boat angler of the year, shore
angler of the year and the overall angler of the year. A full roll of honour
will be posted in the next journal newsletter following the presentation
evening.

Tintagel SAC held their Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 7th January
2014 at the Wootons Hotel, Tintagel. It was extremely well attended and
everyone is looking forward to the new season with an increased number
of boat trips and club weekend matches. We have again affiliated to both
the Angling Trust http://www.anglingtrust.net/
and the Cornish
Federation of Sea Anglers who have a new website at
http://cornishfed.weebly.com/ New members are always welcome.
The efforts of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstal with his “Fish Fight” achieved
over 870,000 signatures and changed Europe’s fishery laws. The
European Parliament has rubber-stamped the new Common Fisheries
Policy which came into force on January 1st. This is a fantastic step taken
towards ending fish discards at sea. Quite a result for people power and

The Cornish Federation of Sea Anglers has also been active in the area of
conservation and fisheries protection during 2013. They have reviewed
the species list and made several changes including raising the minimum
landing size of bass to 3lb. They have also submitting a petition to the
Cornwall Inshore Fisheries Conservation Authority requesting the
prohibition of all entanglement, enmeshing and surround netting in
Cornish waters inside the ten metre depth contour as per Chart Datum.
The petition attracted fantastic support from the public and particular
thanks go to Dave Williams and all the staff at Camping Sport & Leisure
of Tintagel who hosted the petition locally.
The club will be holding there annual presentation evening on Friday 7th
February at the Wootons Hotel, Tintagel from 7.30pm. This is an informal
evening and anyone interested is most welcome to attend. Our guest
speaker this year is the esteemed David Robson (nom de plume).
Forthcoming events include month long specie competitions during
January, February and March.
The big tides in February are on the 1st with the full moon on the 14th. In
March the big tides are on the 2nd the full moon is on the 16th and the
new moon is on the 1st with a black moon on the 30th when sunrise will be
at 6.05am and sunset at 18.49pm.
The next general meeting will be held on Tuesday 4th February at the
Wootons Hotel at 7.30pm.

Tintagel Castle is open every Saturday & Sunday 10 am to 4pm. The cafe is
also open at these times serving hot meals, drinks and snacks. We are open
daily during February half term week 10 am to 4pm with a special Family trail
Tintagel Castle Beach
Due to damage to the beach steps and rock falls from the cliffs caused by the
recent storms, the beach is currently closed for safety reasons. We are working to
get this resolved as quickly as possible in order that the beach can re-open, but

Old Post Office update
Looking forward to a fantastic 2014 season we open the house on 15th February for
the school’s half term and start the season fully on 8th March. We have a very full
events program for the year ahead and look forward to welcoming all our visitors.
Join us on Wednesday 19th February for our first rag rug workshop of 2014. Our
volunteer rag ruggers love to share their craft with visitors and will be on hand to
help you between 11:30am-3pm.
New for 2014 is our Tintagel Old Post Office Facebook page, like us and keep up
with all of our events by searching ‘Tintagel Old Post Office NT’ from your Facebook
home page.
In commemoration of WW1 I am currently researching what life was like here in
Cornwall when war broke out in 1914 ready for our exhibition in September. If you
have any family stories or local knowledge from the time of WW1 you can share with
us please contact me as I am happy for any help.

‘Every six seconds, somebody contacts Samaritans’. An incredible statement that
shows the importance of our organisation.
Cornwall Samaritans was established back in the early 70’s and has gone from
strength to strength, in fact last year nearly 53,000 callers contacted us at our
branch in Treyew Road, Truro. So who are we and what do we do?
All Samaritans operate on the guiding principles of the founder Chad Varah. By
active listening, exploring feelings, options and support, the caller will hopefully find
their distress reduced and have a better understanding of their situation. Samaritans
don’t give advice or impose their personal views all in complete and absolute
confidence. Samaritans are just ordinary people who have undergone intensive
training enabling them to listen actively. It’s not work for everyone but obviously it
can be very rewarding work.
People contact us when things are getting to them and remember you don’t have to
be feeling suicidal to call us. We’re here for everyone, whatever your problems and
you can talk to a volunteer whenever you like. We’re here 24 hours a day every
single day of the year.

TINTAGEL GARDEN CLUB
Our annual cheese, wine and quiz night was held on 6th
December; the questions are now set by last year's
winning team, so we can be in for a 'challenge', and indeed
we were -with many of us, at the end of the evening,
scuttling home to our reference books on all the basic
things we should have known, especially about
Tintagel! The quiz was again ably conducted by John Stratton, and Eve judged the
photo competition, 'My Cornwall', which was won by Diana Mills, with her image of a
great craggy rock and swirling sea off our dramatic coast. The successful evening
ended with a raffle, which included a sumptuous hamper.
Our A G M and dinner was held at The Bossiney House Hotel on 18th January; our
retiring chairperson, Pat Osborne, thanked all those who had helped to make her
time in office enjoyable, and all those who had contributed to a year of interesting
speakers and memorable garden visits.
Finally, when the new committee had been elected, there being no other business,
we then partook of a delicious buffet, for which the hotel management and staff were
rightly applauded. The buzz of conversation grew ever louder as the social side
progressed, until the last guests left getting on for midnight.

As you may be aware the Group is now back and running.
The next order for oil will be on the 28th February 2014 so if you require
oil please place your order by the 26th February to ensure that
negotiations can take place with the oil companies to ensure the best
price is obtained.

WHAT’S GOING ON AT TINTAGEL MEMORIAL PLAYING
FIELDS IN FEBRUARY AND MARCH 2014
CRICKET CLUB
YOUTH CRICKET
In 2013 Tintagel Cricket Club resurrected its Youth Section to progress
children to adult Cricket. We currently have over 30 Under 13 year olds of
mixed gender attending an hour and a half coaching session on a Monday
evening throughout the summer. These sessions are taken by fully qualified
coaches who impart their knowledge and have received a great response
from the kids.
In 2014 we will run winter coaching at Tintagel Community Primary School
(details to follow) and once summer arrives will move back to the Cricket
Club. Sessions are only a pound each plus a club joining fee.
We plan to coach surrounding Primary Schools and have been invited by the
“Chance to shine” National Project to inject extra funding into coaching at
primary schools and the club to improve children’s skills and give them an
introduction to the game.

Tintagel Cricket Club are delighted to announce that they achieved
Clubmark status late in 2013. This gives the club industry standard
accreditation to ensure amongst other qualities, professional coaching, a
secure atmosphere for children, strict disciplinary measures and an
environment for the whole community to enjoy

Tintagel Cricket Club continued its Youth Cricket coaching programme with a
full day of Cricketing games and fun during the summer holiday. 24 girls and
boys aged between 5 &12 attend the club to work with qualified coaches on
their batting and fielding skills. The day followed the success of a recent
schools Cricket afternoon attended by over 60 children from surrounding
Primary Schools. The clubs aim is to get the children to a level where they can
compete in competitions for the 2014 season. Tintagel also holds a coaching
session from 6pm – 7.30pm on Monday evenings in the summer, so bring your

North Cornwall Martial Arts
Sifu Dave Carnell, the head of Impact Martial Arts,
recently travelled to Delabole from Stoke-on-Trent to
grade the adult students and to give a 4-hour seminar.

SEAGULL PROOF SACKS
Ideal to help with the secure and pest-free storage of refuse, especially through the
summer months
Cornwall Council has recently trialled seagull proof sacks in a number of areas. These sacks
are for the containment of domestic household refuse which is not put out in bins.
Household refuse should be bagged as usual and the seagull proof sack can hold up to the
equivalent of 3 black bags of rubbish. Loose rubbish will not be collected. The sacks can
help you protect your rubbish from seagulls and other vermin and will help reduce the
amount of litter on your street. It is easy to store between collections and has proved to be
very effective in seaside areas. Further information can be found at www.cornwall.gov.uk
The sacks are now available to purchase from Tintagel Parish Council at a cost of £3.50
each.
If you are interested in purchasing a sack, or know a neighbour who has a problem with
storage of refuse, please contact the Parish Clerk.
