The Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) of the IQAC Name of the Institution : Year of Report : Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts, Tiruchirappalli 2011 – 2012 Accreditation by the NAAC Team : ‘A’. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------PART-A The IQAC of Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts which has been established as a post accreditation quality sustenance measure meets every year in the college campus to initiate mechanisms for the quality enhancement of the institution. On 13-07-2011, the IQAC members met to initiate more decisions to promote best practices in the institution. • Members of the IQAC appreciated the management for successfully procuring permanent affiliation for the entire UG Programme with the Bharathidasan University and encouraged the management to further apply for 12(b) 2f of UGC act approval for the college. • A proposal for NAAC reaccreditation to be submitted in this year 2011. • Suggestions were given that basic knowledge of need based fine arts courses other than Carnatic and classic dance based on the request made in the feed backs of the students should be given as certificate courses. • Improvising on creative composition of music and dance. • To train students for creative writing. • Inter-Collegiate and Intra-Collegiate competitions to be conducted. • To conduct programmes on including yoga programmes. personality development skills 2 • Members suggested the need for the staff to attend the Orientation Programme conducted by the Academic Staff College. Bharathidasan University has not offered refresher courses in fine arts and hence the IQAC, resolved to request the Academic Staff College of Bharathidasan University to make necessary arrangement for the same. • Members suggested that it is necessary for the students to attend in the beginning of the year bridge courses in English and Yoga and other personality development courses. • And they also said that the Department of Dance and Music can organise programmes to teach some rare compositions in music and dance other than prescribed in syllabi in the beginning of the year for seniors. • They proposed that to improve the creativity of the students a workshop should be conducted for lyric writing by inviting eminent writers. • To conduct programmes professionals in the field. • They insisted that special health programmes for the female students should be conducted separately inviting lady doctors in the city. • It was seen necessary that a lecture demonstration should be arranged to make the students aware of how to balance emotional intelligence. • More social awareness programmes with the social themes should be choreographed by the students of Fine Arts and performed in the public places. • They reminded the management that a letter of intent should be send to NAAC for reaccreditation. • With the applause for the success of the classic fe(a)st 2010, an inter-collegiate competition, the members suggested it should also be continued this year which will surely spread the name and fame of the college among the colleges in the state. • A new proposal was given to inaugurate Classic Fe(a)st -2011 an inter-school programme which will create an awareness among the school students about the fine arts degree programmes in the college. on health and hygiene inviting 3 • The art festival ‘Kalaiyurum Kaviri’ which is conducted by the college every year during the season of concerts should be continued this year and many artists with rare talents should be given opportunity. • They insisted that the management should try and fill up the vacancies in the government approved post both in the teaching and non-teaching posts. Outcome and Achievements in the Academic year 2011-2012 • 8 of our faculty members attended the Orientation Programme conducted by the Academic Staff College in Bharathidasan University in the month of November 2011. • Management has applied for the University Grant Commission approval of the 2f and 12(b) for the College. • An intent letter for the re-accreditation of the College was submitted to the NAAC in the month of August 2011. • Students were given opportunities to compose many new compositions in music and dance and perform it on different stage programmes. • Many creative writing competitions, elocutions, debates were conducted by the department of language on 18.08.2011. • Inter Collegiate competition Classic Fe(a)st -2011 was conducted on 22,23.09.2011 in which 17 colleges from Tamilnadu participated. Srimad Andavar Arts and Science College bagged the Rolling Shield for this year. • An Intra College competition was conducted among the students of department of music and department of dance of our college on 22.12.2011. • Personality Development programmes like yoga, lecture demonstration on balancing emotional intelligence, gender studies and on maintenance of personal health and hygiene were given in this academic year. • 3 Assistant Professors from the department of dance, 3 from the department of language, 2 from the department of music attended the University Grants Commission sponsored Orientation programme conducted by Academic Staff College of Bharathidasan university. 4 • Owing to the special initiation taken by our principal, refresher programmes for fine arts sponsored by University Grants Commission were conducted by the Academic staff college in April 2011 and 4 Assistant Professors from the Department of Music and 4 from the department of dance attended the programme and our principal Dr.Sr. Margaret Bastin was the Co-ordinator of the programme. • Bridge course on Spoken English was conducted from June 15th to July 1st 2011 for all the students. Tests were conducted at the end of the course and prizes were given. Teaching staff also attended the Course. • Yoga training programme was conducted by Mr. Pargunam for all the students and staff from June 15th and July 1st. • ‘Rare composition in music’ was taught to students for 15 days by the Assistant Professors of the Department of Music and ‘New ways in classical dance’ was taught to the students of the department of dance by their teachers from June 15th to July 1st which were compositions other than prescribed in their syllabi. • Dr. Sherin, a Psychiatrist was invited to give lecture demonstration on emotional intelligence on 22nd July’2011. • Dr. Mrs. Hemalatha was invited to give special counsel on health and hygiene to the girl students. • Dance troupes and Music troupes composed many folk dances and songs to create social awareness with themes and topics of social importance and performed in many public programmes. • Intent letter was submitted to NAAC in the month of August 2011 and self-study report was submitted in the month of January 2012. • Classic Fe(a)st 2011 was conducted for schools in and around Tiruchirappalli. Fine arts competitions were conducted on 10.09.2011. Methodist Higher Secondary School, Tiruchirappalli bagged the Rolling shield with 17 points. • ‘Kalaiyurum Kaviri’-2012 a ‘Tamil Isai Vizha’ was conducted from 6th Jan 2012 to 8th Jan 2012, inviting many rare artists for performance, whose rendition was a rare sight and good inspiration to students. 5 • As part of training programme the final year students of Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts were given opportunity to render concerts individually every week. • Two days workshop was conducted on glass paintings and Nib paintings by Mrs.Pitchaiyammal for the students on 3rd & 4.12.2012 . 28 students participated and learnt glass and Nib painting. PART B 01. Activities reflecting the goals and objectivities of the institutions:Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts was started in eagerness to promote the traditional arts through systematic training and to reach the common people, preserve, promote, popularize the cultural treasures of our land among all people of all creeds and communities through its goal ‘A mission through Fine Arts to promote human values’. The institution trains the younger generation particularly socially backward, backward classes and scheduled castes in the divine arts of Dance and Music to make them full fledged professionals with creativity and leadership talents. On completion of the courses many have been appointed as teachers of fine arts in educational institutions or to run their own institutions for Dance and Music. Kalai Kaviri College is the first Christian Institution in the entire nation to offer Post – graduate Degree courses in Dance and Music, while it is the only college to offer research facilities in Dance and Music. The College also offers the first ever opportunity in the world the performing art Bharathanatyam, the Indian Classical Dance, through Off-campus Degree programme in collaboration with Bharathidasan University. As Fine Arts had been the best form to reach human hearts increasing the positive opinion of life values, Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts does not only promote the traditional arts of India nationally but also internationally through offering Distance mode of education. 02. New academic programmes initiated In collaboration with the college CDE, BDU the following academic programmes are initiated: 1. Bachelor of Fine Arts in South Indian Classical Music 2. Master of Fine arts in South Indian Classical Music 3. Diploma in South Indian Classical Music 6 03. Innovation in curricular design and transaction Faculty in the Department of Music of Kalai Kaviri College designed the curriculam for Bachelor of Fine Arts in South Indian Classical Music, Master of Fine arts in South Indian Classical Music, Diploma in South Indian Classical Music for the Distance Education. 04. Inter disciplinary programmes started 1. One year Course on Kuchipudi 2. Four Months Course on Folk Dance 3. Three Months Course on Natya Sastra 05. Examinations reforms implementedCollege is affiliated to Bharathidasan University. Hence the college adheres strictly to all the rules as regulated by the University. Continuous Internal Assessment system as directed by the University is made compulsory as part of CBCS pattern to all UG and PG Courses. Weekly cycle tests are conducted to evaluate the academic performance of the students. As the courses in our college are about “performing arts” students are given vigorous training for many hours daily so as to prepare them for the future challenge of stage performances. Students are given assignments, seminars, and model exams every semester to gauge the academic standard of the students. The final year students of UG and PG courses are given opportunity to present concerts on college stage before all the students and then an analyses and comments are given by the Principal, faculty and students to the development of the particular individual. Our college is represented in the board of studies; so all the suggestions regarding reformation in the examination system is recommended and implemented by the chairman of the board of studies who is our principal. 06. Candidates Qualified: NET / SLET / GATE S. Harish of IBFA appeared and qualified to join Oxford Trinity College, London, through IELTS 7 07. Initiative towards Faculty Development programme:Faculty of the Departments of Dance and Music were given opportunity to present concerts. 8 teachers have participated in Orientation Programme in the month of November 2011 conducted by the Academic Staff College of Bharathidasan University. 8 teachers have participated in the Refresher Course for fine arts conducted by Academic Staff College of Bharathidasan University. 08. Total number of concerts / Seminars / Workshops conducted: 1) 5 concerts, 2) 4 seminars, 3) 1 workshop 09. Research Projects: a) Newly implemented, b) completed As the College is waiting to be recognized under 2(f) 12(b) of University Grants Commission Act, its yet to commit itself for the projects. 10. Patents generated if any: The Administration of Distance Education is in the process of patenting the CDs which are sent as material for the Degree Programme in Bharathanatyam. 11. New collaborative research programmes: Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts is in the process of collaborating with National College, Tiruchirappalli, regarding exchange programme through “Obama Singh 21st Century Knowledge Initiative (OSI)- Inter National Project”. 12. Details of Research Scholars: • 13 students of Master of Fine Arts have submitted projects on various topics of music and dance. • 6 M.Phil scholars are doing research • Five Scholars are doing Ph.D. programme in Dance and nine scholars in Music. Two research scholars in belonging to our department of Music have submitted their thesis to Bharathidasan University. • 39 students of Master of Fine Arts in Distance Education Programme have also submitted their Dissertations. 14. Citation Index of faculty members and impact factor: NIL 15. Honours / Awards to the Faculty: • In appreciation of the songs of Vallalar sung by our Principal she was awarded by ‘Samarasa Sutha Sanmarga Sathya Sangam’ as ‘Arutkalai Kavalar’. • Department of Art and Culture in collaboration with Ruthra Santhi Yogalayam awarded our Secretary Fr. Anthuvan ‘Sevai Semmal’ in appreciation of his work and the Lions Club of Tiruchirappalli Rock City awarded him ‘Sevai Rathna’ and Anbalayam in Salem awarded him ‘Mummatha Sangamar’. 16. Details of department getting SAP, COSTST (ASSIST) / DST F.IST, etc… assistance / recognition: NIL 18. Community Services: Community services are conducted through NSS, RRS, YRC units and club. Summer courses and part-time school conducted by our management are also need based community services as the objective of it is to teach traditional fine arts like dance, music, painting to children in the neighborhood as well as in and around, Tiruchirappalli. • NSS camp was conducted from 11.09.2011 to 17.09.2011. In this camp many awareness programmes were given like personality development, health and hygiene, saving rain water, having pollution free environment, emphasis on girl’s education, abolition of child labor and as our students were from performing arts, they gave cultural programmes as part of entertainment for the people in the neighborhood with themes of social awareness. • On 17.12.2011 an eye-checkup-camp was conducted by Joseph Eye Hospital in the college campus. 140 people benefited from this camp. • NSS, YRC, RRC celebrated the Women’s Day celebration in the college. They invited Prof. Dr. Mrs. Manimegalai to preside over the function. 19. Teacher and officers newly recruited: • Mrs. Namagiri was appointed as Assistant Professor of Veena by the Management. • Ms.Aparna was appointed as Assistant Professor of Dance by the Management. 20. Teaching – Non-Teaching staff ratio: 1: 1 10 21. Improvement in the Library Services: Automation is in the process. Students are given opportunity and training to use the internet facility for preparing their assignments. The hostel students use the computer facility to download the programmes and events as and whenever they need to present seminars. Faculty uses the internet facility to search for e-books and prepare for smart classes. Many rare books of music and dance in the library help the research scholars who visit library from various places. 22. New books / Journal subscribed and their value: 2011-2012 - Rs.16,154/Books - Rs.6,779/- Journals - Rs.9,375/- 23. Courses in which student assessment of teachers is introduced action taken on student feedback: Student assessment of teachers is introduced for all the courses in the College. Students are asked to fill up the NAAC format and a database of such feedback is created and submitted to the principal. Our principal analyses, consolidates a report and necessary actions are taken and facilitates improvement on those areas. 24. Unit cost of education: Rs.30, 405 per student / per year 25. Computerization of administrative proceedings, the process of admission, examination results and issue of certificates: • Most of the Administration activities are done through computers. • The Department works are mostly computerized. • As the college is affiliated to Bharathidasan University, the results and issue of mark statements are not under our purview. • The college permits the students to browse the results as Bharathidasan University through internet. publishes the examination results 11 26. Increase in the infrastructural facilities, semester’s Medical Centre, Computers, LCD, interactive boards: Genset was purchased – 4 lakhs. 27. Technology up gradation: The faculty uses internet facility to screen famous musician’s concerts, important Natyanjali programmes which inspire students to use the Internet – learning mode. 28. Computer and Internet access and Training to teachers and students: Broadband connection at concessional rate availed under the National mission for education sponsored by the Ministry of HRD, Delhi through BSNL, Tiruchirappalli. 5 Broadband connections were availed. 29. Financial aid to students: • College has distributed Rs.5000 each to 5 needy students in the academic year 2011-2012. • Concessions are given by the Management for the needy students. • The total amount of scholarship distributed to the students of SC/ST/BC/MBC/DNC and the number of beneficiaries are given below. Activities and support from Alumni Association: Through Alumni Association, 6 students from the department of Dance and 5 students from the department of Music were given job opportunities. 31. Activities and support from the Parents – Teachers Association: The part-time Kalai Kaviri school of Fine Arts has Parent – Teacher Association which offers moral support for all the programmes conducted in the college and school. 32. Health Services: • Management has taken special efforts to provide a resident doctor Mrs. Hemalatha John who visits our college and hostel twice a week giving health counsel for the students and also whenever necessary. • On July 22, 2011 Dr. Sherine a famous psychologist was invited to give lecture on emotional intelligence and to clear psychology oriented doubts of the students. The interaction followed was very successful. • Yoga is practised everyday morning by students guided by the concern Professor before their classes could begin. 33. Margaret Divya (Individual) BFA-I – Dance 4th Prize Special Feature of this year BARDFEST is our student Mohanapriyan had won the over all shield which was introduced this year. • Our M.Phil student Janani Ganesan Participated in the instrumental music (Veena) competition choosing to play Veena conducted by Karpaga Vinayagar Sath Sangam in Srirangam (Trichy) and won I prize. 36. Activities of the guidance and counseling unit: • Gender Club was started in 2011 by the Department of Women Studies which gave awareness about the male chauvinistic society to the girl students and how to overcome such problems. • Faculty of both the departments guide and counsel the students through Tutor-ward system. • They also guide and give practice to the students to face the challenges of the cultural programme in which the students participate. 15 • Research Advisors for Ph.D. Programme often visit the college and offer valuable guidance to the Ph.D. students. • Grievance Redress Cell in the college redresses the grievance of the students, teaching and non teaching staff particularly with their valuable advice. • Disciplinary Committee often corrects and counsels the students to behave well during events and programmes conducted in the campus and in other places as well as during regular college working days. 37. Placement services provided to students: The institution facilitates the placement of its outgoing students • When schools and colleges from all over India contact our college Principal for qualified dance and music teachers immediately the Job opportunity cell of alumni association selects students with requested talents and are sent to those places for appointment. • When some students start their own schools of music and dance in their places, our college obliges them by giving moral support. • Some are helped to be employed in Media. (FM, TV Channels) 38. Development programmes for Non-Teaching staff: Mr. Rajasekar, Retd. Superintendent of collegiate education from Chennai was invited to give Orientation for the Non-Teaching staff in the Administration regarding official representation and communication to Joint Director’s office (Tiruchirappalli Region). 39. Healthy practices of the institution: • The Dance Troupe of Kalai Kaviri which was started in 1978 has established individuality in the field of entertainment. It has performed 1634 programmes until now nationally and internationally and this academic year 40 programmes have been performed nation wide. Kalai Kaviri College students are the performers and they concentrate their performance on themes of social awareness. Students are trained even during their courses for stage performance so they will overcome stage fear and be ready for the future competitive world. • Off-campus programme offers now part-time off campus in Dance courses for school children in Srilanka and they are affiliated to Kalai Kaviri School of Fine Arts. 16 • Nirmalanjali Bharathanatyam College, Colombo has on roll 20 students. • Navarasa Niruthya Narthanalaya, Hatton has on roll 30 students. • Vavuniya Niruthya Nikethana Fine Arts and Thirukkoneswara Natyakalamandram, Vavuniya have on roll 47 students. • Part-Time Off-campus Dance Courses conducted by the following schools and dance academics in Tamilnadu were affiliated to Kalai Kaviri School of Fine Arts during July, August 2011. • Velammal International School, Panchetti, Chennai having school children from all over the world has 30 students being trained by Ms. Vijaya Prasad, who is an alumnus of our Kalai Kaviri Offcampus Degree Programme. • Kavithalaya, Nagercoil, run by Ms. Nisha an Alumni of Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts and Kalai Kaviri Off-campus Degree Programme has 16 students. • Alpha Group of Institution, Kaviri Nagar, Tiruchirappalli, has enrolled 251 students in the first year of the course. 40. Linkages development with National / International / Academic / Research bodies: NIL 41. Any other relevant information the institution wishes to add: • Students were taken on educational tour to places where stone manuscripts, sculptures would be an inspiration to students of fine arts. The places visited are Kudumian Malai, Cithanna Vasal, Thirumayam, Devipattinam, Karaikudi, Rameswaram and competitions were Dhanushkodi. • This academic year intra college conducted on 21.12.2011 among the students of music and dance. On the same day games were conducted. 17 Alumni Association The office bearers of the association met four times in this academic year and discussed about: 1. To place a request for the Alumni’s to present cultural programmes in the college. 2. Decision was taken to celebrate every second Saturday of October every year as Kalai Kaviri College Alumni Association Day. Programmes Presented by Alumni of Kalai Kaviri College • A workshop was conducted by Mr. Venkatesh on ‘Mirudangam’s Thalam and Laya’ on 26.08.2011 in the Msgr.S.M.George Auditorium for the present batch of students which was an inspiration to all the students. • Mr. Sibi and Mr. Jayachandran of Kalakshetra’s Department of Dance rendered a dance concert explaining the Bharathanatya’s ‘Sivanjali’ on behalf of the Alumni Association on 16.12.2011 in our College campus. • Alumni of Distance Education programme were invited to share their experience in the Alumni Association of Kalai Kaviri College on 30.01.2012. Events of the Department of Dance From June 15th 2011 to July 1st 2011 the department of Dance conducted classes to coach specially on the “New ways to be followed in ‘Choreography’ and ‘Natya Varna’. • Mr. Madan Kumar, the Assistant Professor of the Department of Dance gave a lecture demonstration on ‘Natya Sastra’ • Post graduate students of Department of Dance performed a dance drama of History of ‘Nandanar’ • Srimathi Suryakala Chandrika, the Director of Srirama Srishti Dance School, Colombo in Srilanka presented a Bharathanatya Programme with her group in Msgr. George Auditorium. 18 Dance Association During this Academic year Dance Association Day was celebrated on August 30th 2011 and Dr. Boominathan of Bishop Heber College presided over the function. The special feature of the programme was that the programmes presented were choreographed by our students based on the theme of the year ‘Indra Haram’. The chief guest appreciated the hard work done by the students and the management for bringing out the creativity of the students. Events of the Music department • The Department of Music trained the students from June 15th to July 1st on rare composition of musicians other than prescribed by the University. • Aandan temple Mr. A.V.S. Sundarrajan rendered a vocal concert on 04.08.2011 in the Msgr. George Auditorium. • Karaikudi Mrs. Kamala Pasupathi rendered a veena concert for the students on 10.10.2011. • On 01.02.2012 the Assistant Professor of Veena Mrs. Namagiri of our college, rendered a Veena Concert. • A documentary film on ‘Thorpavai Koothu’ was filmed for the students by Melur Mr. Harikrishnan on 18.01.2012. • Mr. B. Ramachandra Goswamy from Tanjore gave a lecture demonstration and power point presentation of ‘Harikathai’ on 08.02.2012. • Students of the Department of Music celebrated the birthday of Papanasam Sivan by rendering concert on ‘Keerthananjali’ on 26.09.2011. • The students of II MFA participated in the celebration of Thyaga Birumma Aradhanai celebrated in Thiruvarur in Tanjore. 19 Music Association • The Music Association was celebrated on 24.10.11 on the theme ‘Tamilar Thiruvizhakalil Isai’. Students from each class rendered songs pertaining to each festival celebrated by the people of Tamilnadu. The chief guest was Srimathi Rajeswari Ramakrishnan a Veena Artist. Events of the Department of Languages • A 15 day Bridge Course in English was conducted by Dr. Beula Esther Assistant Professor of the English Department of our College to improve the proficiency of English Language for the students. • Students from the Department of Sanskrit participated in the competition held by Srimad Andavar Arts and Science College on the ‘Samaskirutham Surabharathi’ and won many prizes. • With the higher aim of giving the students an awareness of the availability of literture, Department of Tamil inaugurates a ‘Veeramamunivar Ilakkia Peravai’ on 30.01.2012. The author and editor of ‘Uyirezhuthu’ magazine Mr.Sudhir presided over the function. In his inaugural messege Kalai Mamani Dr. S. Arimalam Padmanaban critically reviewed the musical notes in the dramas of Sankaradas Swamy. • On 26.03.12 Mrs. P. Kalaivani a research scholar from Madras University presented a critical review ‘on the medicinal values found in reciting Devaram.’ 20 Language Association Language Association Day was celebrated on 18.12.2011. All the first year and second year students presented various literary features on stage and writer Edwin presided over the function. He appreciated the college for preserving the traditional arts through Literature. Achievement of our Faculty • Mrs. V. Kalaiyurum Kaviri – 2012 – Isai Vizha In the season of concerts Kalai Kaviri College celebrated this cultural festival called ‘Kalaiyurum Kaviri’ on January 6th, 7th, 8th 2012 for the art Lovers of Tiruchirappalli. Famous Artistes from various vocal, instrumental and dance fields were invited and it was a great success.
