Do you know Unaffiliated Jews in
Chester County, Montgomery County
and Delaware County?
Do you have Jewish friends or acquaintances
who live in Chester County, Montgomery County
and Delaware County who are not
already members of a synagogue? If you do,
why not invite them to one of the upcoming
events at Or Shalom, for example our next
Friday night dinner? They may have a good time
and decide to come back. They may have such
a good time that they decide to become
members themselves. According to a recent
survey by the Jewish Federation, there are
many, many unaffiliated Jews in Chester county.
We’d love to contact them, but don’t know who
they are. You can help.
Todah rabah!
Celebrate with an Oneg
Or Shalom Sisterhood is delighted to announce that you can sponsor
an Oneg for any celebration you wish! Friday night and/or Saturday
morning. The Sisterhood will be happy to purchase it
and set it up, we only want you to join us and
celebrate! Call Julie Miller at (267) 886-9171 or email
Julie at [email protected]

From your
newsletter editors
Do we have your correct email
address? If you have not been
receiving the weekly update,
we probably don’t have a correct
address. Please email the office
with your correct address

Do we have a complete list of
your Yahrzeits? We send out a
reminder letter each month. If
you don’t get one, we don’t have
your Yahrzeit records up to date.
Email the office with the name,
relationship to member, and civil date
including year and we will add it
to our records.

Dear Congregants,
While we usually have a
minyan during Sabbath services,
there are times we miss.
It is especially disheartening
when we miss and someone is
here to say kaddish.
If you intend to
celebrate a Yahrzeit, please
inform Rabbi Jacob and he will
make telephone calls to ensure
there. It would also be helpful if
you could bring members of your
family or friends.
Thank you
Rabbi Jacob

The President’s Column
New Leadership at Or Shalom
I am very pleased to announce a new slate of officers and board members
at Congregation Or Shalom for the coming year. My name is Alan Messing
and I will be President. I have been a member of Or Shalom for the past six
years and have had involvement with several synagogues over my adult life.
There is truly no business like shul business. I am new to the Or Shalom
board so I will be learning from my friends here about what is working well
and the issues and challenges we face. I also want to hear from you as to
how we can make Or Shalom a better center of your spiritual life.
I want to give a special Thank You to Stuart D. Lurie who has been an
outstanding President for the past three years. He has given so much of
himself and his expertise to making Or Shalom an intimate, welcoming
home where we can worship, learn and have some fun. Stuart will continue
to be active on the Board of Directors. We are looking forward to an
exciting 5777. One big change at Or Shalom will be the combining of our
Hebrew School with Congregation Beth El – Ner Tamid in Broomall, PA
(CBENT). This partnership will give both synagogues a larger student body
to work with and give our children a broader and more in depth Jewish education. By the time you read this the details of the coming school year
should be available to everyone.
Keeping our Congregation moving forward and growing requires dedication
and strong efforts from our members. We have a great nucleus of active
participants but we can always use anyone willing to lend a hand. We all
have busy lives but if we can each spend a little time working on a
committee or coming to services we will have a more robust congregation
and the personal fulfillment and satisfaction of performing a mitzvah. Please
join me to help make coming to Or Shalom an even greater experience and
please welcome our new officers and board members for the fiscal year July
1, 2016 – June 30, 2017.

Mitzvah of the Month
Rabbi Jacob Rosner
The combining of our Sunday school with that of CBENT brings
a sense of excitement and renewal to our education program.
No longer will our kids sit in classrooms with 2 or three kids.
They will now have 2 education directors, 2 rabbis and the
school boards of 2 synagogues sharing their expertise, learning
and experience to create the best possible learning
experience for our youngsters. We will continue to be
independent on Tuesday assuring that we will maintain our
identity as a synagogue, and that our youngsters and their
parents will maintain their loyalty for Or Shalom. At the same
time it is always a positive when our children are exposed to
more Jewish children their own age. Hopefully many friendships
will result.
Many thanks are due to the synagogue presidents, the board
members and others who worked many hours
during numerous meetings to iron out the many issues that
arose during the negotiations for the merger. The goal of
creating 2 totally equal partners was met.
Traditional Jews recite the shema twice daily. Each day we are
reminded to teach the words of Torah to our children. I pray that
the decision made will strengthen our commitment to that
mitzvah.

From the Education Director
Na’ama Yarden
A new school year is starting soon and this time we have a big change to share with you. Here is the press release
to the local newspaper:
Congregation Beth El – Ner Tamid and Congregation Or Shalom to Blend Sunday Religious School Programs
After months of collaboration, Congregation Or Shalom in Berwyn and Congregation Beth El – Ner Tamid in
Broomall are pleased to announce they have created a partnership on Sunday mornings, enabling their religious
school students to learn together.
This exciting new collaboration between the William Sampson Religious School at Congregation Beth El – Ner
Tamid and the Or Shalom Religious School will be called, “Or Tamid” – The Eternal Light.
The two synagogues believe this is a wonderful opportunity to create a more enriched learning environment for
the students. The blending of the Sunday programs will result in larger class sizes and additional social opportunities for the students. Midweek programs will remain at the respective synagogues, operating under their existing
names, in order to keep students connected to their home communities.
The community is invited to the opening day of religious school on Sunday, September 11 th from 9am to 12 noon
at Congregation Beth El – Ner Tamid, immediately followed by a barbecue for the entire family, complete with a
moon bounce.
To enroll your children or for more information, please contact Education Directors – Na’ama Yarden at
[email protected] or Ellen Glassman at [email protected]
Both communities are looking forward to strengthening their educational programs together and
invite you to join them.
“Two Are Better Than One, Because They Have A Good Reward For Their Toil” Kohelet – Ecclesiates 4:9-12
What does it mean for us?
* On Tuesdays (or other midweek days) we will still have Religious school at Or shalom just for our students.
* On the weekends (Saturday or Sunday) we will rotate the schools between the two congregations, every two
months, starting at CBENT.
* This new initiative is a trial for this year and as the year goes, we will decide if we would like to continue it
after this year.
* On the weekends when we have the whole joint school at Or Shalom, we will need all the rooms in the building,
including the library and the Social Hall. I am asking our community to be patient and to welcome CBENT school
community to our building.
* As any new change, we will be working hard through out the year to make all needed adjustments. Please feel
free to address us with any concern, question or idea.
* If you know of any family, who is looking for a school for their kids, please let us know. Although the numbers
this year will grow, thanks to the joint program, we still would love to increase our student body.
I wish everyone a wonderful new school year with a successful transition to our new joint program with CBENT.

Sisterhood news
Hello,
I hope you all had a wonderful summer!
I was lucky enough to take separate trips with each of my three children,
plus an awesome family trip, so it was a very nice summer for me.
I have a wonderful Sisterhood announcement-Laurie Katz is going to be our new Sisterhood President!! Not only
does she read Torah and chant Haftorah beautifully, you can often see
her preparing kiddush lunch in the kitchen. I am so lucky to have such
a capable, remarkable and lovely person taking over. We will be
co-presidents until the spring when she will become the president.
We have a calendar of events for the year (next page). Please take a
look and write the dates on your calendar. If you have a conflict for an
event you would really like to attend, let me or Laurie know. If others
have a conflict as well, we will do our best to change the date when possible. Don't forget our opening dinner on September 21. Due to popular
demand, it will be held at Margaret Kuo's in Wayne, where it was last
year.
Thank you to David and Caryl Keet for hosting our August Happy Hour!
It was a fun evening!
Thank you, and hope to see you soon.
