had been the one to keep them alive, to lead them
forward after loss. But this time he won’t be there.
So he offers the people guidance for the future.
Moses says, there is always a way back. “From
there, [once you have gone into Exile], you will seek
Adonai your God, and you will find him; if you search
for him with all your heart and all your soul.” Moses
knows the human condition. We never always get
everything right. We sin, we abandon God, we harm
one another, and we experience Exile, distance,
alienation, loss. But just as there is exile, there is
also return.
RABBI’S MESSAGE
We are now in the seven weeks of consolation
between Tisha b’Av and Rosh haShannah. The big
idea of Tisha b’Av is loss, loss of the Temple, the
intimate place where we met with God. At the same
time, we are reading Devarim where one of the
major subtexts is Moses’ deep sense of loss. The
loss of his mission to enter the land together with the
people. Loss is so hard that it is often a topic that we
all struggle to discuss, parents with children,
partners with one another. And yet, it is an ever
present part of human existence. How do we handle
loss? How do we return to joyful life after loss? How
do we find home again?
Many of us think that repentance, or return is not
possible. But return is possible. Many of us think that
the return depends on us getting our act together,
and holding it together. That’s not true. We don’t
have to get to a better place in order to become
worthy of returning to God. “From there,” the Torah
says, “you will seek God, and you will find him,” i.e.
from that place to which we have fallen. That place
where we find ourselves, “There” is precisely the
place from which to rise and return to God. As the
Chassidic authors loved to emphasize: ‫לית אתר פנוי‬
‫מינה‬, “There is no place devoid of him.” In each place
where we may find ourselves, God is there.
With the loss of the Temple we lost God’s permanent
address. God’s home was broken into, its
sacredness violated, and burned to the ground. In
the Torah, Moses loses his dream. When Moses
pleads to enter the land, God responds, Rav Lekha,
“its too much for you” as if he’s saying, ‘its too much
for you to lead the people on these marches into the
Promised Land.’ Moses, old in body, cannot sustain
that journey. So Moses mourns his inability to fulfill
God’s plan.
Some Chassidc authors base this teaching of God’s
all embracing presence on a verse in
parashat VaEtchanan, ‫כי השם הוא האלהים אין עוד‬
‫“ מלבדו‬for Adonai he is God, and there is nothing
other than him.” They hear in this verse the idea that
there is literally, nothing outside of God. Wherever
someone is, is a place in direct contact with God.
That is one of the deepest insights of Chasidic
Judaism, and one with which the Psalms brim as
well, all of life can be lived in the presence of God.
Even the tzurus, the pain, the narrow places, the
distressing and terrible things we see and do, they
do not make it impossible to return to God.
How does Moses respond? He speaks to the people
about what he has seen, what he has learned over
the years as their leader. He is worried about them,
worried they won’t remember what to do when they
get off track in the future. He tells them, ‘I know you.
You are not going to manage life in the future without
straying from God, without following after your lusts,
and straying from God’s ways. You have habits that
I’ve seen and you haven’t broken them yet.’ He
foretells, “when you have children and grandchildren
in the land, you will grow corrupt and make a carved
image, and you will do evil in the eyes of the Lord
your God to anger him.” But he doesn’t just warn, he
also tries again to guide, to lead. After each sin, after
each time that the people gave up on God, Moses
had been the one to lead them back, to lead them in
repentance, to restore the relationship with God, to
remind the people of God’s loving character. Moses

seven weeks of preparation for the High Holidays
speaks these words of comfort. ‫נחמו נחמו עמי‬,
Nachamu, nachamu Ami, “Be consoled my people.”

part in the ongoing 5000 year conversation that is

made our phone calls to apologize to the people we
have hurt, before we have looked at our lives and
committed ourselves to struggle again against the
habits that enslave us, before we have come to
terms with the losses that destroy all our defenses
and knock us flat to the ground, God is already right
there offering comfort. Does that surprise you? It is
not primarily through our own effort that we return to
God.

24 for a spirited Havdalah and Selichot service.
We will be posting some of the music for this event
on the Synagogue Facebook page so you can
familiarize yourself with it. More active voices
makes for more Ruach when it comes to Jewish
prayer.
When we experience loss, we need to remember the
words Nachamu. When we experience loss, God
wants to offer us rest and grace to escort us on our
return home. And we need to remember the teaching
of Moses, “from there…” From where you are right
now, from there you can find God, you can turn and
be comforted.

has been ill or shut in. Please also let Laurie in the
office or Ellen Katz, chair of our joint SynagogueTemple Caring Committee, know of anyone who
needs a call or visit so we can make sure no one
“falls through the cracks.”
May these weeks ahead of Rosh haShannah be a
time of rest and grace, drawing us back home, back
to the presence of God.

Cher and I are about to embark on a 10 day selfdirected bicycle trip from Buffalo to Albany on the
Erie Canal. Now that I have announced this to
everyone, we can't back out. Actually, we can back
out. But it would be so much more fun and
adventuresome if we go ahead with our plans.

Sunday, October 16, 2016 with Ma’ariv
services beginning at 6:30 PM.

At Sha-cha-rit services on Monday and Tuesday
mornings, beginning at 9:30 AM, we shall wave
the Lulav & Etrog just before and during Hallel
and during a procession around the synagogue
(Ha-ka-fah).
I urge everyone who would like to purchase a
Lulav & Etrog set to contact Laurie at the
synagogue office (792-4945) by Thursday
September 29, 2016.The cost of a Lulav & Etrog
set is $45.00.
Please do not walk or stand on graves. There
are two good reasons: A) By Jewish tradition
you should respect the dead by not walking on
the graves, B) The caskets are made of pinethat deteriorates over the years. The result is a
large empty space about four feet below the
surface. The weight of standing on a grave may
cause it to cave in & you could be injured.

Catskills, cheerfully offering you "Catskills on
Broadway."
Let Freddie Roman, Mal Z. Lawrence, Dick
Capri, and Louise Duart work their comedic
magic: howl, weep, and then feel great -laughter is the best medicine wise men say.
OK, these old-time, all-time greats of the
Borscht Belt are not here in person, but the
wonders of cinematic technology provide us
with front-row seats.

With the assistance of Jewish Federation’s
partner organization JAFI, musicians Luba
Agranovsky and Dmitri Kasuk moved from
Moscow to Jerusalem in 1990. Seven years
later they moved to the USA, where Luba and
Dmitri continued their education and musical
careers. Interwoven with their beautiful
music, they will tell their poignant and
touching story of rescue.
Winner of numerous piano and flute
competitions, their music has been recorded for
Israeli radio and television. During the last ten
years, they have performed regularly throughout
the world, including: Canada, England,
Germany, Israel, Italy, Russia, Scotland, and
the USA.

Shaaray Tefila, The Center for Jewish Life is your multigenerational
community where we strive to connect and create an atmosphere for the
enjoyment of Jewish life and opportunities for spiritual growth.
