St. Joseph & the Animal Health Corridor
Animal Health and Nutrition is a multi-billion dollar industry, and it’s positioned right here in St. Joseph, Mo.
Nearly half of the 10 largest global animal health companies are located in the KC Animal Health Corridor –
including Nestle Purina and Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. – both of which have research headquarters
and major expansions in St. Joseph.
Collaborate with the Best Minds from Four of the 10 Global Animal Health Leaders
With a progressive spirit of collaboration toward the strongest technological advancements and the best learning opportunities in animal health, the top minds in animal health and nutrition live and work in the renowned
KC Animal Health Corridor, which stretches from Columbia, Mo., to Manhattan, Kan., with St. Joseph as its
North Star. These animal health and nutrition companies represent one third of the $19 billion global industry
sales, and account for a total of 70 global or U.S. headquarters for industry companies.
As a demonstration of St. Joseph’s vital role in the KC Animal Health Corridor, Missouri Western State University is home to the Kit Bond Science and Technology Incubator, a dynamic multi-million dollar partnership of
public and private enterprise dedicated to helping new bioscience companies successfully launch. Regionally,
there are a total of eight technology incubators, building an environment of shared animal health and agricultural expertise like nowhere else in the world.
Agri-Based Life Sciences
What does the view from the top look like? Synergy, innovation and progress.
St. Joseph offers agricultural sciences strength, receiving a No. 4 ranking by location quotient for agricultural
sciences industry, as compared to all 324 U.S. metropolitan areas. In regard to both the concentration of agricultural science and life science employment, St. Joseph ranks among the top 10 areas in the country.
Among a four-state region of Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska – the regional market for ag science firms –
St. Joseph dominates in terms of ag science resources and businesses.
In St. Joseph, the largest numbers of workers are employed in the veterinary pharmaceutical preparation
industry, agricultural chemicals and blood derivatives. This contributes to a total of 3,200 employees in the
degreed ag sciences industry and another 3,000 employed in general life sciences.
Recently, academic, government and local business partners have created a Midwestern economic engine centered around advancements in agricultural science, building upon the city’s rich agricultural history and calling
together the region’s best minds.
Regionally, St. Joseph is a close partner with the Kansas City life sciences sector, prompting Bill Duncan, Kansas
City Life Sciences Institute former president, to speak about the collaborative energy between the two closelysituated metropolitan areas. “From a regional perspective, St. Joseph is an important part of our animal and
life science endeavors. We have an ongoing dialogue with St. Joseph leaders,” says Duncan in a CJ Midwest
Special Section report on St. Joseph called “Seeding for Success.”
Ag Processing, Inc. is one of St. Joseph’s many agri-based life sciences companies
based in the Stockyards Industrial Park area.
Skilled Manufacturing in St. Joseph
St. Joseph is rapidly becoming a Midwestern leader in regional and global manufacturing. The city’s manufacturing industry boasts global firms in industries including specialized equipment production, animal health
pharmaceuticals and battery production and distribution – including consistently high national rankings. In
2010, St. Joseph was ranked No.5 in the nation for job growth in all cities by NewGeography.com
Located just 35 minutes north of Kansas City International Airport and at a crossroads for two major thoroughfares, Interstate 29 and U.S. Highway 36, St. Joseph thrives in manufacturing for its leadership, location and
progressive attitude. The city offers a multi-modal port with both rail and barge access plus low-cost utilities.
Back Office & Insurance
Global power toward processes including information
technology and telecommunications is reflected in the
dynamic St. Joseph, Mo., back office business cluster. As
a city in the hub of integrated data center networks, St.
Joseph’s service to the financial, insurance and direct
marketing industries creates site availability with an
ultra-reliable, top-performing infrastructure.
The city’s telecommunications resources are affordable
and robust, essential to business growth. St. Joseph is
serviced by local telephone providers AT&T and Suddenlink. Both AT&T and Suddenlink offer services to both
the public and businesses, including television, Internet,
phone service and security. Major long distance carriers,
such as MCI and AT&T, maintain points of presence in St.
Joseph.
St. Joseph’s electrical utilities are extremely competitive
with other areas of the country. Headquartered in Kansas
City, Mo., KCP&L provides electrical service to St. Joseph
and ranks among the largest wholesale marketers of
electricity and natural gas in North America. KCP&L has
the ability to provide a redundant power source at many St. Joseph locations. In addition, a substation in the
new state-of-the-art Eastowne Business Park allows for dual-feed capability from two separate substations and
a source on site at the business park.
The insurance business cluster is a strong component of the St Joseph economy.
Together with real estate and finance, it represents 7 percent of local employment. Local insurance providers
help businesses offer competitive benefit packages and encourage a strong and vibrant workforce.
American Family Insurance is the nation’s thirdlargest mutual property and casualty insurer, and
St. Joseph is home to the company’s regional
headquarters. The company is the second-largest insurer of home and private passenger cars in
Missouri and Kansas.

possible rate.

Food Processing & Alternative Energy
Forward-Thinking Growth with Legendary Expertise
A Long History of Food Processing Expertise: St. Joseph has a history of experience and success in food
processing, stemming back to the late 1800s when the city’s riverfront location and access to westward
expansion routes made its stockyards area one of the largest cattle processing sites in the nation. Several top
names in food brands, such as Aunt Jemima, have their historical beginnings in St. Joseph. This spirit of quality
and entrepreneurship lend to the top-performance in food processing that is still a strong presence today and
draws food manufacturing leaders.
Outstanding Support Facilities, including Nor-Am Cold Storage Warehouse with Rail Loading: St. Joseph
offers a unique advantage for food processors with its 377,000 square foot cold storage warehouse, Nor-Am.

Infrastructure to Support Food Processing: The Southside Sewer District Pre-Treatment Facility has been
renovated in recent years. This multi-million dollar investment meets the needs for water pollution control and
wastewater from nearby food processors, and other industry in the area, setting a foundation for future industrial growth in one of the city’s manufacturing areas.
Food Processing Corporations in St. Joseph:
Triumph Foods – St. Joseph was selected as the home one
of the top 10 economic development projects in the nation
in 2003, the Triumph Foods corporate headquarters and
processing facility. Today, the food processing plant, together with the bioscience and manufacturing headquarters for
Triumph Foods, employs more than 2,800 talented members of the St. Joseph area workforce.
Tyson Foods, Inc. – Tyson Foods, Inc., is one of the world’s largest producers
of meat and poultry, as well as a leader in hunger and disaster relief. The St.
Joseph meat manufacturing facility employs 600 people and produces Ball Park
Franks and deli meats.
LifeLine Foods: LifeLine Foods is an innovative
company that makes products for both domestic
and international markets. The items produced
originate from two primary business enterprises —
corn-based food ingredients and ethanol. Lifeline’s
business model offers the unique ability to extract
maximum value from the corn kernel and capitalize on both the food and ethanol production. The
38-acre, 750,000 square foot manufacturing facility
employs 145 people, meets AIB standards and is
Kosher certified.
Ventura Foods LLC: Ventura provides quality food
products for food service, food ingredient, retail and export. The company operates multiple manufacturing, packaging and distribution locations throughout the United States, including both a refinery — in partnership with the local Ag Processing, Inc. (AGP) — and
a plant in St. Joseph. The plant is a fully automated facility featuring state-of-the-art equipment used in shortening, oil and margarine manufacturing.
Ag Processing Inc. (AGP): The AGP Refinery works together as a partner with Ventura as a major refiner of soybeans, and together, the two organizations enjoy a long
working relationship with time-demonstrated success. Soybean processing is AGP’s
primary business and is the fourth largest soybean processor in the U.S. It is the largest cooperative soybean processor in the world. In 1985, AGP began refining soybean oil by purchasing equipment for installation in an existing building at the St. Joseph plant. AGP is involved
in alternative energy by producing biodiesel.
Daily’s Premium Meats: Daily’s® Premium Meats, owned jointly by Triumph
Foods and Seaboard Foods, sells a variety of processed pork items from signature honey cured bacon to applewood smoked bacon to naturally smoked hams
to breakfast sausages. The company produces ‘naturally’ wood-smoked bacon
and uses only freshtrimmed pork bellies, supplied by Triumph and Seaboard
Foods, to improve bacon quality and consistency. The plant plans to open in 2016 and eventually employ more
than 200 people.
Chase Candy Company: The Chase Candy Company has been making fine
candies since 1876, including the world-famous Cherry Mash, the thirdoldest candy bar in the country. Chase still uses time-tested recipes and
the finest, freshest ingredients to make candy the old-fashioned way.
Equipment has, of course, been upgraded, and the plant has the ability to
make 72,000 Cherry Mash candy bars in a day.
Northwest BioFuels and Terra Bioenergy also round out the alternative
energy production force in St. Joseph.
St. Joseph: A Place You Want to Live
The spirit of westward expansion that inspired an entrepreneurial attitude in the early 19th century is still
evident today. Known for its pivotal role in the KC Animal Health Corridor, St. Joseph and the surrounding area
is buzzing with research, development and production in industries relating to agricultural services and animal
health and nutrition. In the midst of technological progress, St. Joseph is continually set apart for its “small
town” feel and strong Midwestern work ethic, drawing many employees from the surrounding farming communities.
Come Home to St. Joseph
St Joseph is a community of charming neighborhoods interlaced by a richly-wooded parkway system. Whatever your
style, St. Joseph has a home to suit you. Grand, tree-lined
avenues graced by traditional brick homes are popular spots
with joggers and dog-walkers. A little apart from the business
bustle are family-friendly neighborhoods of new construction. The young, the single and the empty-nesters find the
vibrancy of downtown loft-living the ideal blend of comfort
and convenience. For those with the vision to build, creating a custom home in the nearby country and scenic rural
areas is an affordable dream. Those seeking the convenience
of renting also enjoy a variety of options with complexes,
duplexes and condominiums available across all neighborhoods within the city.
St Joseph Resonates with Cultural Life
Though sandwiched between the larger metropolitan areas of Kansas
City and Omaha, St Joseph residents never need to leave home to
enjoy the arts. Music lovers enjoy St Joseph’s very own professional
symphony orchestra, with performances from October through May.
Audiences attend performances in the richly ornamented surroundings of the historic Missouri Theatre, St Joseph’s art deco treasure, and
one of the nation’s only suspended ceiling theater houses. St. Joseph’s
award-winning Robidoux Resident Theatre showcases rich local talent
with stage performances at a variety of venues, including the historic
Robidoux Landing Playhouse, a dinner theater set alongside St. Joseph’s scenic riverfront. The Robidoux Resident Theater has repeatedly
earned national recognition including first place awards for design and
costuming at American Association of Community Theatre Festivals.
The city celebrates the visual arts year-round at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, and seasonally with
events such as Art in the Park and the annual Trails West!® festival. Festivals such as St. Patrick’s Mexican Fiesta
and the Coleman Hawkins Jazz festival celebrate the city’s cultural diversity and continue to draw crowds from
the Kansas City metropolitan area to St. Joseph.
Shopping and Dining for Every Taste in St. Joseph
Shoppers can delight to the charms of downtown boutiques for unique finds, while finding major name stores
to meet more everyday needs. Dining experiences abound, from the culturally diverse offerings in downtown
(Bad Art Bistro and Boudreaux’s Louisiana Seafood and Steaks) to restaurants with universal name recognition
(Chipotle, Chili’s, Olive Garden) conveniently located to major shopping areas.
St Joseph Provides Year-Round Recreational Opportunities
Sprinkled throughout the city are plenty of ways to enjoy off-time. You can enjoy the quiet of one of five area
golf courses, thrill to the speed of hockey or ice skating at the ice arena, catch a Mustangs wooden-league baseball game or take the family to the city’s large aquatic park. St. Joseph’s “The Ride” city bus system makes numerous
daily routes and custom stops, connecting the four corners of our city with ease and convenience.
St Joseph Stays Green with an Extensive Parkway System
There’s something soothing about stretches of verdant landscape and in St. Joseph it’s always just around the corner
thanks to a remarkable 26-mile Parkway threaded throughout
the city from north to south sides. The Parkway links 48 individual parks and sports complexes, including the Bode Indoor
Ice Arena, with biking and walking trails along the way. The
Parkway provides wonderfully hushed passages for walking
on a snowy winter day, and comes alive in the summer-to- fall
community Parties on the Parkway series, complete with local
music, food and drinks. The city has active bike and running
clubs that take advantage of the lovely parkway system and the beauty of the surrounding countryside.

Amateur and Professional Sports
Sports fans here love summer because that is when the Kansas City Chiefs come to
St Joseph for Summer Training Camp. The three week camp draws 60,000 attendees,
30,000 of which are visitors to the city who come to enjoy watching professional
football training on the campus of MWSU. St Joseph was chosen as the summer
training site over a number of other cities across the Midwest. The university partnered with the Kansas City Chiefs in constructing the new Indoor Sports Complex, which houses a full-size
indoor football field, weight room, offices, locker and meeting rooms. The Training Camp is free to the public
and provides concessions and a Kid Zone for smaller children.
Throughout the year, residents and visitors enjoy a variety of amateur sports opportunities, from ice hockey
leagues at the Bode Ice Arena to classic summer fun
at the Mustangs games, held in the city’s recently
remodeled Phil Welch Stadium along the scenic parkway. The city’s youth soccer association offers a multifield complex with both fall and spring seasons. Tennis
and swim clubs, an aquatic park, several indoor pools
and exercise facilities are also highlights of St. Joseph’s
sports scene. Many families enjoy Griffons’ football
and basketball games at the campus of Missouri Western State University, with remodeled athletic facilities
used by the Kansas City Chiefs.
